ROTALIANA X LED LED technology has created a sort of revolution within the lighting sector. A change that has had an impact on urban, technical, and architectural illumination that has reached the domestic market in the last few years.Compare with other light source such as incandescent, halogen or fluorescent, LED have an advantage of energy efficiency. They also provide the opportunity for new shape because of the small and customable size. The aim is to create a lighting fixture that capable of expressing all these good points of LED, at the same time to discover the new aesthetic form. Also, in collaboration with Rotaliana, a company that specializes in lighting for the domestic market. To make a lighting fixture that only LED light sources and new electronic components can provide.

02

The moon itself does not actually give off any light, it reflect the light from sun.

MIRAGE The main idea is start from solar system. When you look up at night, if the weather is good you’ll see a bright moon hanging on the sky. But actually the moonlight we see is not shine by itself; it is a reflection of sunlight. I want to put this atmosphere into the design, to make a lighting fixture that the user cannot see the light source, only can feel the soft and warm indirect light by reflector. To simulate the solar system movement, the reflector as a lampshade can be turned 180 degree. While user turning the reflector, the light performance differently – to be focus on the object or to be an ambience light in space.

03

academic w o r k

The project is aim to provide a LED lighting fixture that takes advantage of new aesthetics and improved performance that only LED light sources can provide. To achieve this target, I design a floor light, which is combining the reflector and LED source. A well-designed reflector can improve the light fixture’s luminance, make it more efficient; at the same time, a reflected light is more tender and soft than the direct light. In the past time, the traditional lighting fixtures usually have to separate the reflector and the light source because the size of light bulb and the heat problem. Those kinds of lighting fixture usually give people an image of heavy and too industrial shape. In this project, I’m trying to create a light weight reflector with LED coalesce together, to show the new aesthetics of LED floor lamp.

The basic concept is from the reflect light of moon. The shape I want to keep very simple, just use geometry pattern to simulate the planet in the space - Circular, triangle and cone shape. Through sketches and making some paper model, I decided to make a cone shape reflector as a lampshade. It is a circular flat wood veneer with simple one cut to the center, the edge has metal button to clip both side together become a cone. The form is close to traditional Asian umbrella but without the umbrella structures inside. Instead of separate the light to lampshade and light source in different part, I designed an aluminum pipe through the lampshade as the main turning structure also the LED light embedding inside.

The best lighting design is not to show the light, to let people don’t even feel the light. To use the very simple natural phenomenon – reflection, make the light be gentle and soft. In the meanwhile, create a sense between oriental and moder style. I try to bring a new aesthetics language of light, to make this floor lamp not only functional but also decorative.

BLM BLM group has advanced technology. Mainly they work with meal tube and laser cut. They already produced a lot of solution for products. The technology gains the possibility of the materials. They also have special experiences about joint and connection parts, and their solutions are always smart and beautiful. Especially, their technology makes the assembly process simple and less welding. It leads to reduce the working steps and cost. Our idea is to give BLM group a new expression of products by using simple and a new process with their advanced technology.

THE 2013 GREY FOREST Mass Production and Uniqueness The typology of the product is a “side table”. The shape came from natural form, using hard material – metal, to create a soft and flexible atmosphere. Through laser cut with simple and symmetry patterns on the metal tube, it can be bend or extrude easily. Under the controlled processed, each pieces will still have slightly different structure. Thought it is a mass production, we aim to bring some uniqueness to this furniture. Combining high tech and even patterns, the end product can be diversity and have very natural aesthetic feeling inside. In addition, with different angle of light, the effect of shadow will have complex performance.

Playing with the visible and invisible. Giving the user a sense of softness while being a hard surface.

GUFRAM On studying Gufram’s furniture in detail a few conclusions were made. First was that Gufram’s designs are influenced heavily by art. Second, the furniture does not possess the typologies related to common household furniture. Third, the ideas showcased by the furniture are ironic and makes the user experience the concept through a slow process.

16

20 12

VENUS

The surface of the furniture looks soft because of the form made from a hardened fabric.

17

academic w o r k

The inspiration for the furniture came from the painting, Venus at her Mirror by Velazquez Diego in 1647-51. The painting is considered ironic because it shows Venus lying nude but facing away from the viewer. At the same time the viewer is able to get a clear view of her face in the mirror she is looking at. In the painting the figure of the woman is shown lying down on a bed covered by a blue cloth. The artist used this technique to soften the effect of the hard furniture on which the model posed and the cloth would also adapt its shape according to the shape of the model’s posture.

This project located in Taipei Ambassador hotel 2F. It was part of the hotel modernized reconstruction. Canton court served fresh made Dim-Sum, exquisite seafood gourmets-quality Taiwanese tea. The interior design concept was the tea. We use spot light to light up the beautiful tea pot walls, create rich layers and shadows. And we also designed some elegant ceiling fixtures, use the tea color fabric to match the concept.

“The idea is to keep a perfect balance of eastern culture and modern fusion style.” The idea of the custom fixture comes from traditional chinese window patterns. The window patterns ususally found in wealthy family, which represent to bring good luck. The main concept is to transform the pattern to a solid shape. First my sketches are more complicate, then I decided to make a simple symmetrical design. Using polished stainless steel and tea colored fabric. The idea is to keep a perfect balance of eastern culture and modern fusion style.

Located in Danang, Vietnam. Hyatt made this a resort hotel. It has a very beautiful sea view and privet beach. We designed three of the specialty restaurants - green house, beach house and pool house. Three of them has different interior design concept. Hyatt Regency Danang had just complete and had a grand opening in October 2012. It was so excited to see all the restaurants lighting atmosphere and custom light fixtures finished.

Green house is the all day dinning restaurant. The concept of green house is “kitchen which is the spiritual center of home, a place where family and friends gather together and enjoy sharing with each other. To bring the bright and welcom atmosphere but at the same time having strong contrast to present the rich texture of interior design, we use a lot of different angle of lighting fixtures. For dinning area, using simple downlight to focus on table; for bar and open kitchen, uplights and light box give dramatic stage effect. In addition, we designed a polished bronze pendant, inside with traditional embossed pattern of Vietnam. The pendant becomes a symbol of this restaurant and gives another layer to the ceiling.

Beach house is the main restaurant in hotel which has the best view and close to the beach. The concept of interior is from Vietnam history. Beach house restaurant exemplity the marriage between the flair of french elegance and the quiet luster of vietnamese aethetic. To match the calm ambiance, our lighting design use dimmed focus light to create the intimate atmosphere for customers. At the same time, we apply uplight and linear light hidden inside millwork detail to highlight the black lacquer walls, special designed wine cellar and furnitures. Furthermore, we design a decorative casting glass chandelier base on the traditional Vietnam brick pattern. The surrounding feeling of light is soft but highly contrast on the well decorative and local art piece.

The open air restaurant is a welcoming restaurant of relaxation adjacent to the main resort pool. With spectacular views of ocean and a spacious outdoor dining terrace, the design of the pool house is inspired by cabana. To match the leisure and natural atmosphere, we use mostly daylighting and limited spot lights. For out-door area, we designed different size of candle holder, from table oil lamp to latern. Combining the light for landscape, the ambience of Pool house is calm and peaceful. Throught the glare-less light, people can enjoy their time with wonderful view, having the real touch of resort hotel.

This specialty restaurant within the hotel is conceived as an urban forest in the heart of the city. There’s a blur boundary between the interior and the outdoor terrance. through two level height window during the day time, bright and fresh daylight brimming the space, but in the night time, high contrast light focus on the decorations and create a mysterious atmosphere. The hanging tree branch sculpture as a main focus, and the irregular patterns of shadow extend the concept of forest.

To present the two level high ceiling of JP Teres, we aim to design a chandelier which is outstanding but not take away the focus of tree branch sculpture behind. Respond the blur boundary between interior and out-door area, we decided to use casting glass and play with the transparency. Casting glass with multi-angle cutting create a crystal effect, that reflect the light inside to be glamourous but still keep the low profile.

1. Look down from the mezzanine level. 2. With different size of multi-angle cut casting glass, the chandelier gives an impression of mixing the elegant, luxery and modern. The material of structure is black cast iron which keep the shape simple. 3. Private dining room is in the mezzanine level, the atmosphere is more intimate and quiet.

The show was performed in one of the most famous small experiments theatre in Taipei - Guling street avant-garde theatre. It was adapted from Marguerite Duras’s work “Le Ravissement de Lol.V.Stei “. There were only two actors and a live band on stage. The director used clips story, monologue, and modern dance to make a new interpretation of this story. This was rather experimental. The whole stage was wrapped by air bubble film from the wall to the ground, to symbolized a sand beach. My lighting design concept was to visualize the female protagonist’s chaos mind with the use of the rope light hidden under the air bubble film. The audience saw the light either as blood vessel or memory flow like a river. I used 200m rope light which not only constituted a pictorial image but also create a rather interesting lighting effect. Dark blue down light with dimmed warm color rope light gave out strong and emotional feeling. The result was poetic and beautiful. It gained compliments in either the performance and the aesthetics.

The result was quit success, the visual image was strong and focus.

This was my first theatrical lighting design project performed in one of the experimental theatre class room in TNUA. It was part of Sara Kan’s scrip and a poetry from one of Taiwanese contemporary poet. We combined dance, theatrical performance and projection design into the show and remade it an new piece.

This was the first time I tried the skill I learned from the university and I therefore knew more about the relationship between theatrical lighting and projection design. The result was quit satisfactory, the scale was not big, though. And from this performance we received 2004 S-An Cultural Foundation art award.
