Full Statement The monarch butterfly is a wonder of the modern world. This specimen weighs less than a dime and is one the most beloved species in North America. The migration of the monarch is one of the most magical seasonal movements of any species, made even more impressive by the fact that the 5,000 mile round trip is not completed by a single generation. It takes six generations of monarchs to mate, hatch, transform from caterpillar to butterfly and complete a full migration cycle. Over the last twenty years the monarch’s population has declined by about 90 percent, putting this species incredibly close to extinction. A key factor is loss of milkweed habitat, which is vital for the caterpillar’s diet and life cycle. Milkweed is where monarchs lay their eggs and it’s also the food caterpillars must eat in order to complete their transformation into butterflies. Golf courses are uniquely positioned to contribute to the effort of reversing habitat loss and saving the monarch butterfly. By growing milkweed, golf course superintendents can provide much needed monarch habitat while increasing the beauty and sustainability of their courses. In response, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Audubon international (AI) formed a unique partnership and launched Monarchs In The Rough to assist golf course superintendents and staff across North America as they create monarch habitat in outof-play areas on golf courses. Additionally, the campaign raises awareness and builds the public support needed to stand up for monarch butterflies. Superintendents, golf courses and the members of their communities are taking action to stand up for monarch butterflies before it’s too late.
