TOGETHER RECESS
2023-2024
CURRICULUM
ARE BETTER
ecclesiasties 4:9
two people than one. they can help each other in everything they do.
a note from
rEcess Directors,
Our theme for the 2023-2024 year is Better Together! Life is better together because we know that all people were created with an innate desire and need for real community. However, the story of friends with disabilities is often one of isolation. So, we are deeply grateful for you joining us in changing this story of disability. Ecclesiastes 4:9 says, “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.” Mutual friendships & tangibly showing families experiencing disability that we want to do this life together is what rEcess is all about
rEcess is a place not adapted to make families experiencing disability fit in, but a place designed just for them. It brings rest to parents and caregivers, invites kids with disabilities to build mutual friendships, and Four Square intentionally sees the siblings and meets them where they are at. One of my favorite parts of rEcess is hearing the story of a volunteer and family experiencing it for their first time the joy, the growing understanding of our mutual need for one another & looking forward to what is next builds such momentum. Every year we work to make rEcess even better and some of the things you can look forward to in this curriculum are an optional devotional, bonus summer months (if you hope to continue through the summer), + fun surprise visits throughout the year!
We know that when people without disability get to know people with disability, they start to care about each other. This is all because we begin living a life that shares experiences & moments a simple connection through a respite night can become the most beautiful acquaintance turned friendship. A story that you grow to know well as you continue rEcess in this next year! This year I am praying over you that through rEcess you would experience and see this truth that life is better together It is better as you build relationships through rEcess and facilitate others to do the same. We want you to know that you are never alone. We are here cheering you on & other rEcess sites are here for you too.
We continue to pray for God to go before us in all we do together!

We encourage you to have a sensory activity available at your rEcess nights, keeping specific individuals in mind and adjusting to what your friends need.
+ Every month includes items that can be used for a sensory bin, bag, or box. Sensory bins are usually a shallow container that combines filler material and various small odds and ends. Create your themed bin for the month & join the kids in the fun of exploring these items for a quiet break from the rest of rEcess fun!

At rEcess, it is so valuable to connect with parents in the small bit of time we have before we invite them to their night away Be sure to greet the parents and invite the medical professional along to gather any pertinent information for your time together.
We want our rEcess parents to be seen, known, and feel connected to our rEcess volunteers. At drop-off, ask them about their day or find out their plans for the evening. At pick-up, connect with the parents about their evening, celebrate their child’s night, and share crafts and photos with them We invite you to not only be friends with families at rEcess, but at the grocery store, sports events, at church, etc!

OCTOBER 2023
“Better together is one of the best phrases I’ve heard to describe rEcess. We are all better when we’re in that space together... I know for a fact that I’m BETTER when I’m in that room. I know that my neurotypical child is BETTER when he’s surrounded by other children that he can relate to. I know that my child with special needs is BETTER when he’s in a safe, loving, judge free environment. And that’s what happens at rEcess - we’re all together and for those 3 hours, everything is BETTER.”

Our friends experiencing disability want to be treated appropriately for their biological age. Regardless of a child’s mental age or physical ability, we always interact with our friends in an age-appropriate way If you are paired with a teenager, plan activities or have conversations that you would typically have with a teenager Remember, we always want to make sure our physical interactions are above reproach and appropriate for the individual’s age. Keep physical touch to a minimum and model appropriate physical touch between friends High fives, side hugs, secret handshakes, and fist bumps are encouraged!

Tone of Voice
At rEcess, we want to make sure we are speaking with an appropriate tone of voice There is no reason to raise your voice or speak slowly when communicating with someone experiencing disability If you are talking to a teenager, speak to them like you would any other teenager. If you are talking to an adult, speak to them like you would any other adult. Remember, keep your communication style the same and enjoy getting to know our amazing friends
Did You Know?
At 99 Balloons, our heart is for people with and without disabilities to engage in meaningful relationships and build an authentic community People with disabilities are all too familiar with those who show up for a limited time, interact with them at their convenience or for a volunteer opportunity, and then never see them again. Our hope is that rEcess is an environment where our families experiencing disability see the same faces month after month, build relationships with the volunteers, and feel a part of something that will last longer than one rEcess event

Language
Language for the disability community is always changing. We always want to remember that and approach it with a desire to grow in understanding A good starting point is people-first language Our friends are a human being before anything else, and if necessary, we mention their different abilities But, we always remember that it is just part of who they are. For example, instead of “down syndrome girl” say “girl with down syndrome.” Not everyone prefers this language, so start with what you know and as you hear preferred language in conversation with that individual or their parents, model the language they use

We love having our siblings join us in Four Square as part of rEcess! The term “Glass Child’’ is used to describe siblings of children experiencing disability It refers to the fact that siblings are often “seen through” by their parents, relatives, or neighbors due to the high needs of their siblings experiencing disability. Seek to listen to our sibs, give them the undivided attention they desire & deserve, and encourage them to let loose and have fun!

Equip your volunteers by continuing to sharpen their awareness and skills in working with children with differing abilities.
Some of our children who attend rEcess might attempt to run away and escape from their current situation. If a child decides to sprint away from you, try to step in front of them in order to redirect their path Even if they are not your buddy for the evening, always help redirect the child Do everything in your power not to touch, grab, or pull the child that is running away from you. Try to understand the roots behind what they were trying to leave from - were they feeling nervous, did not like the activity, etc ? Use this time to remind volunteers about exits and the emergency plan in place if a child does elope

Non-Verbal Communication
While spending time with our friends who communicate non-verbally, it is important to chat and interact with them just like anyone else Regardless of how someone communicates, he or she is still able to hear and understand what is being said to and around them If the individual uses an assistive communication device (like a talker) or signs, start with easy to answer questions to help you best understand the way they communicate It is always a mutual relationship, so tell your friend about your day and ask about theirs too!

Many children with disabilities “stim” which means they repeat physical movements, sounds, or words This is a natural way for our friends to “selfregulate” or “self-calm ” It helps our friends manage fear, anxiety, anger, excitement, and other strong emotions Some examples of stimming are rocking, flapping, pacing, or repeating a specific phrase. At rEcess, we do not stop a child from stimming because it is their way of coping with certain situations

Sensory Needs
Some of our rEcess friends may struggle with some of our high-sensory activities. If a child is experiencing sensory overload, do your best to guide them away from the situation Typically, it will help soothe a child if you dim the lights, move to a quiet space, or provide noisecancelling headphones. Be patient as you seek to understand how to be a good friend to one another. All behavior is a form of communication so do your best to understand the child on a deeper level and lean into what they are communicating
