oil on canvas, framed, signed & dated 1944 H72" W45"
Provenance: Howard Chandler Christy
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Murray Thompkins
Thence by descent to present heir
Other Notes: Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Murray Tompkins and her daughter boarded the Southern Railroad train in Columbia, South Carolina, in late March of 1944 for a tour of Warrenton, Virginia, Washington, DC, and New York. While in Virginia, they attended the steeplechase races at Glenwood Park in Middleburg.
In New York, the ladies had an appointment with famed portrait painter Howard Chandler Christy to sit for a joint portrait. Upon arrival at Mr. Christy's studio, they found that he refused to paint them in the clothing they had brought from Columbia. After muchheated discussion, the parties agreed that with the help of Mr. Christy, they would purchase new gowns for their portrait, as seen in the painting offered here today.
The Tompkins returned to Columbia on 15th April 1944. Their trip was noted in Columbia's State Newspaper that evening.
On display with the portrait are the original gowns they wore for this portrait's sitting.
