AIRPORTS OF MONTENEGRO

This year, Airports of Montenegro will again see about 3 million passengers pass through its terminals.
During the summer season, starting on March 30th, 2025, and ending in late October, Tivat Airport will offer around 60 routes. The most important news worth sharing is the launch of a new route Tivat-Barcelona (Vueling), starting on July 1st. The route will be operated with three weekly frequencies on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays until October 25th.
As regards Podgorica Airport, the airlines’ route announcements suggest there will be more than 45 routes available. Our flag carrier Air Montenegro is set to launch two new routes - Prague and Baku, thus expanding the flight offer to and with Central Europe. We expect the Spanish flag carrier Iberia to perform a miniseries of charter flights between Madrid and Podgorica in the shoulder season, with a certain number of tickets available for purchase. Expected high load-factor of these flights would back our efforts towards introducing a scheduled service between the two capitals.
Additionally, travel lovers will be able to enjoy the restored popular routes such as Berlin, Brussels, Gdansk, Krakow and Wroclaw (Ryanair), while Wizz Air will resume operations to Vienna, Katowice, London Gatwick and Warsaw.
Scheduled flights between Podgorica and European capitals will remain unchanged as we continue to foster successful cooperation with our renowned partners Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines etc. Podgorica will maintain its connections with the European capitals – Istanbul, Paris, Rome, Vienna, London, Zurich, Frankfurt, Warsaw… All these destinations accommodate hub airports as one-connection-away gateways to the rest of the world.
Further on, we intend to expand the capacity of the Podgorica Airport departure gate to the extent feasible at present time, in an attempt to ensure better travel convenience for the passengers. We are particularly pleased that the Ministry of Transport facilitated the introduction of a bus service between Podgorica Airport and the cities of Podgorica and Ulcinj respectively. Therefore, our travellers can now choose between taxi and bus service.

Despite its modern character, Podgorica is rich in historical significance. The Old Town, Stara Varoš, features cobblestone streets and landmarks such as the iconic Clock Tower and the Turkish Mosque, relics from the Ottoman period (1474-1879). Nearby, the ancient Roman city of Doclea, just a few kilometres from Podgorica, is one of Montenegro’s most significant archaeological sites. Visitors can explore remnants of Roman structures, including a basilica, city walls, and various public buildings dating back to the 1st century AD.

The club was founded in 1949 when Budućnost sports society decided to form the men’s basketball club. Budućnost participated in its first competition in June of 1949, at the third Montenegrin Championship.

Basketball club Studentski centar, commonly referred to as SC Derby is a men’s professional basketball club based in Podgorica, Montenegro. The club currently competes in the Montenegrin Basketball League and the ABA League.

SAHAT KULA AND OLD TOWN
The Old Town (Stara Varoš) was the centre of old Podgorica during the period of Ottoman rule from 1474 until 1879. It is the last remnants of Ottoman architecture in Podgorica, and you can still feel the spirit of those times when walking down its cobblestone streets.
The symbol of the Old Town is the Clock Tower (Sahat kula), often mentioned in poems and songs about Podgorica.
The Clock Tower, constructed in 1667 by Adži-paša Osmanagić, a notable figure in Podgorica, stands as a striking example of Ottoman architecture in the village of Stara Varoš. Rising 19 meters above Bećir Beg Osmanagić Square, this iconic structure features a clock mechanism installed in 1890, crafted by an Italian foundry. Remarkably, it continues to provide the correct time for both residents and visitors.
As a symbol of Podgorica’s enduring spirit, the Clock Tower offers a glimpse into the city’s rich past. It has played a vital role in shaping the cultural identity of Podgorica while remaining a key element of its contemporary urban landscape. The tower has withstood centuries of change and conflict, serving as a testament to the city’s resilience.
During World War II, the Clock Tower showed remarkable resilience. The tower survived the bombing of Podgorica, which destroyed most of the city. Its resilience has made it one of the few remaining Ottoman landmarks in the area.
It was restored in January 2012, when a new clock mechanism, imported from France, was installed, but its exterior remained the same.

THE ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL OF THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST
The Orthodox Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Podgorica is a monumental and remarkable example of religious architecture. Its construction began in 1993 and it took two decades to complete. The cathedral is characterized by a large dome and two impressive white stone towers, each standing 26.7 meters high and housing a total of 17 bells. The largest bell, weighing 11 tons, is the heaviest in the Balkans. At the base of the towers are two small churches dedicated to St Simeon Mirotočiv, and St Jovan Vladimir. The interiors, with intricate details and vivid colours are truly stunning and provide a visual treat for all visitors, especially those who appreciate art and religious iconography.
The Church of the Resurrection of Christ embodies the significance of Orthodox Christianity in Montenegrin culture. Its imposing structure contrasts with older, more modest religious buildings in the area.
ST GEORGE CHURCH
St. George Church is the oldest active Christian church in Montenegro.
It is located in the centre of Podgorica, at the bottom of the Gorica hill, after which the city was named. Dating back to the 9th and 11th centuries, the enchanting St. George Church has stood the test of time, witnessing the transformation of Podgorica throughout the centuries. Its ancient walls have seen the rise and fall of empires, the passing of generations, and the evolution of Montenegro.
During its turbulent history, the church has been restored and rebuilt several times, so the original appearance has not been fully preserved to this day. Still, the church’s architectural style is a testament to the influences of Byzantine and Romanesque design. Its exterior features a simple yet elegant stone facade, adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements. The interior, though modest in size, exudes a sense of tranquillity and spirituality. The interior is painted with frescoes that are the work of an anonymous painter.

CATHOLIC CHURCH
The Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus is the only Roman Catholic church in the city of Podgorica, Montenegro. It was built in 1969, thus replacing the city centre church which was destroyed during the bombing of Podgorica in World War II.
The church was built to resemble the ship and is a fine example of brutalist architecture of the era, with the slick, straight and clean concrete façade. It has a 40-metre-high freestanding bell tower, with concrete spiral staircases. From the dark interior, a 25-metre-high tower sticks up, cleverly designed to filter light to illuminate the main altar. Its facade was never finished.

MOSQUE
Built in the late 18tth century, The Osmanagić Mosque is located in Stara Varoš. The mosque’s courtyard houses the tomb of Mehmed-Pasha Osmanagić, who was credited with building the mosque, as well as the Clock Tower. The mosque suffered extensive damage during World War II and laid in ruins until its restoration in 1997.

Skender Čauševa – The Starodoganjska Mosque was built in the late 15th century, and until 1582 it was the only mosque in Podgorica. It was renovated a number of times through centuries. It houses the headquarters of the Committee of the Islamic Community for Podgorica, as well as the headquarters of the Islamic Community in Montenegro.
ANCIENT DOCLEA
The remains of ancient Doclea are located on the outskirts of Podgorica, just four kilometres from the city centre, on a broad plateau nestled between the Morača and Zeta rivers, with mountains as a backdrop. The town dates back to the first century AD and was lived in until around 500 AD. By the fourth century, a Christian community had emerged on the eastern side of the city, leading to the construction of churches and a large episcopal basilica. Archaeological excavations in the area began in the late 19th century and continue to this day. The City Museum features a permanent display of valuable funerary artifacts, including ceramic and glass vessels, jewellery, tools and weapons. Ancient Doclea gained international recognition in the field of archaeology with the discovery of the renowned Podgorica Cup, now housed in the Russian Hermitage Museum.

PARK FOREST GORICA
Park Forest Gorica is one of the most popular and beloved green spaces in the capital, often called the “lungs” of Podgorica. Located on the hill of the same name, after which the city was named, it provides both natural beauty and a recreational escape from the city centre. The park is a peaceful escape from the city’s crowd and it is perfect for a relaxing walk, a picnic, or for sitting on a bench and enjoying nature.
This is the heaven for recreational sportsmen, joggers and walkers. Gorica Park features several walking trails with some paths leading to the top of the hill for best views. Gorica hilltop is a popular photo spot that offers stunning panoramic views of Podgorica, surrounding mountains and the Morača River.
A significant WWII monument called “Partisan – the Warrior Memorial”, is located in this park, and it serves as a symbol of bravery and sacrifices made by Montenegrin Partisans during WWII.
Gorica Hill is also a home to an Adventure Park, which a great place for families, groups and individuals who enjoy adventure and nature. The park features a variety of exciting outdoor activities, several high rope courses with different levels of difficulty, including obstacles like bridges, climbing walls, and zip lines through the forest. LJUBOVIĆ HILL
The Ljubović hill, one of the symbols of Podgorica, is located between the settlements of Stara Varoš and Zabjelo. Today, it is regarded as an oasis of green and a popular spot to escape the summer heat, rest, hike and enjoy nature walks, fresh air and tranquillity, along the marked walking trails that lead to the hilltop.
The significance of the hill has changed throughout history. During the Ottoman rule, Ljubović Hill, still unforested, had served the Ottomans to defend the conquered Podgorica. Then, during the Italian occupation of Podgorica in WWII, the Italians defended their position from the top of Ljubović, with soldiers deployed on the hilltop and barracks with ammunition at the hill foot. In the 20th century the hill was reforested, along with Gorica Hill.
Ljubović was often referred to as a spot where young couples in love would come for a stroll or to court each other and it served as an inspiration for a famous Montenegrin folk love song, “While Walking by the Ljubović Hill” (“Šetajući pored Ljubovića”).
TOLOŠI PARK
Tološi park is situated near the University of Montenegro and it is a popular spot for active recreation, relaxation and a neighbourhood’s favourite gathering area. Visitors enjoy jogging, walking and cycling along its pathways. Despite being close to urban areas, Tološi Park allows visitors to relax and soak up the beauty of nature. The park’s design includes plenty of shaded spots, making it comfortable even on warmer days. It also offers a playground area for children, which is why it an ideal place for families to spend quality time together. There, children can enjoy a day of an outdoor fun in a safe and peaceful environment.
NIJAGARA WATERFALLS
The waterfall made by the Cijevna River, popularly known as Niagara Falls, is a place that is visited by several thousand tourists every year. Niagara is located in the village of Kuća Rakića, a 10-minute drive from Podgorica downtown.
These waterfalls are a good choice for a fantastic day trip from Podgorica. They are most impressive after the spring thaws, when numerous small cascades find their way through the picturesque karst landscape. The banks are then covered with spring flowers. Unfortunately, by August they are often completely dried up.

MEDUN
Medun is located about 12 kilometres northeast of Podgorica, in the Kuči area. It is known for its monumental complex consisting of the remains of the Illyrian town of Meteon, the church of St. Nicholas and the birth house of Marko Miljanov, a famous hero and writer, which serves today the memorial museum of the city.
The Marko Miljanov Museum was opened in 1971, in a historical building that reflects the architectural style of the region, and it encompasses a diverse collection of artifacts, documents, and exhibits that highlight Miljanov’s life and the broader socio-political context of Montenegro during his time. Visitors can explore displays that include traditional costumes, weaponry, and everyday items that illustrate the cultural practices of the Montenegrin people.

SKADAR LAKE
Skadar Lake is one of Montenegro’s most significant tourist attractions, known for its rich biodiversity, including rare, endangered bird species such as the wild pelican. The area offers numerous recreational opportunities such as hiking and biking trails, boat cruises, beach relaxation, and visits to island churches and monasteries. Here you can visit Vranjina, an island village on Lake Skadar, often referred to as “Montenegrin Venice” for its enchanting natural environment. THE INDEPENDANCE SQUARE
The Independence Square, formerly known as the Ivan Milutinović Square, is the central city square of Podgorica. The square, restored in 2006, serves as the central location for organizing significant social, cultural and seasonal events, reflecting the vibrant spirit of Podgorica and its people. SASTAVCI AND STONE BRIDGE
Sastavci, also known as Skaline, located at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers, is a popular gathering spot, especially among the youth. The stairs at Skaline symbolize timeless beauty and romance, and they have become one of Podgorica’s most recognizable landmarks over the decades.
Historically, a caravan station called Birziminium existed at this site, which evolved into a thriving city due to trade and craftsmanship. Sastavci and its bridge served as the base from which Podgorica developed. In the mid-15th century, Podgorica fell under the Ottoman rule, and the Depedogen Fortress was built between 1474 and 1477. Over time, this name gave the way to the term Podgorica by the 16th century.
The stone bridge on the Ribnica River dates back to the 15th century. With its ancient ramparts and elegant stairs, it serves as evidence of the strategic importance of this area in the past. This monument of imperishable beauty remains a cherished symbol of Podgorica’s rich history.
The Old Bridge on the Ribnica was entered into the Register of protected monuments in 1949.

THE MONTENEGRIN ORO
MONUMENT
The Montenegrin Oro Monument is a symbol of Montenegrin culture and tradition. It is the work of sculptor Mita Živković. It is over five meters high and consists of eight sculptures. The monument is located on the May 21st Boulevard.
VLADIMIR VISOTKSY MONUMENT
A statue of Vladimir Vysotsky (1938 – 1980) in Podgorica, stands as a testament to the deep admiration and affection the famous Soviet singer and song writer held for Montenegro. He was in Podgorica while working on a film for the former TV station Titograd and expressed his love for Montenegro in his song “For Montenegrins”, saying: “I regret in this life not to have two roots and that I cannot name Montenegro as my second homeland”.
The monument is located on the bank of the river Morača, between the two bridges – Moscow and Millennium. It was designed by the Russian sculptor Alexander Taratinov, who also designed the monument to Alexander Pushkin in Podgorica.
PETAR I PETROVIĆ NJEGOŠ MONUMENT
This impressive bronze monument, standing almost seven meters high, is dedicated to Petar Petrović Njegoš (1748-1830), one of the most important figures in Montenegrin history. Petar I Petrovic Njegoš, the state-builder, military leader and church leader of Montenegro was later canonized as St. Petar Cetinjski. As a spiritual leader, poet and visionary, his influence extends far beyond Montenegro’s borders.
St. Petar Cetinjski was a remarkable figure in both the political and cultural history of Montenegro. His entire life was devoted to the struggle for his country’s national liberation, independence, and its economic and cultural development.
The author of the monument is MSc. Nenad Šoškić, an academic sculptor. The monument is located in a section of University Park on George Washington Boulevard, which is easily accessible and serves as a great starting point for exploring other nearby attractions in Podgorica.
PARTISAN THE WARRIOR MEMORIAL
Partisan the Warrior Memorial is located on Gorica Hill and represents a resting place for two revolutionaries and 66 national heroes of Montenegro, who gave their lives for freedom during the People’s Liberation War in the period between 1941 and 1945.
It was unveiled on July 13th, 1957. The authors of the monument are Vojislav Đokić, an architectural engineer and Drago Đurović, an academic sculptor.
MONUMENT TO THE INNOCENT VICTIMS
In the very heart of the city, in a peaceful residential-commercial complex, a monument-memorial stands, a testament to both the city’s long and tragic past. Podgorica was the scene of tragic bombing particularly during the Second World War, where many innocent citizens lost their lives. Some of the many bombs found and deactivated during the construction of Podgorica’s infrastructure have become a part of this memorial.
The monument was designed by a wellknown Podgorica architect Vasilije Knežević and was unveiled on December 19th 1994, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Podgorica’s WW2 liberation. It serves as a reminder of devastating consequences and sends a clear visual message about enormous human and material losses.
JOSIP BROZ TITO MONUMENT
The monument to the lifelong President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), Josip Broz Tito is a bronze figure that contains an inscription: “Grateful citizens of Titograd and Podgorica”. It is located on the St. Petar Cetinjski Boulevard in Podgorica.
After World War II, Podgorica was first designated as the capital of Montenegro in 1946. At that time, it was renamed Titograd in honour of Josip Broz Tito. As Yugoslavia began to break up, Titograd was renamed to Podgorica after a referendum on April 2nd 1992.
IVAN CRNOJEVIĆ
MONUMENT
Ivan Crnojević (1442-1490) was the most powerful ruler of the third Montenegrin state dynasty of Crnojevići.
He is remembered as a vivid example of the centuries-old struggle of Montenegrins for freedom and dignity. The period of his rule lasted only a quarter of a century, but Ivan Crnojević has remained to this day very present in life of Montenegrin people, thanks to his state achievements. He established a legislature that helped create modern Montenegro and founded the royal capital of Montenegro, Cetinje.
The monument to Ivan Crnojevic, the work of sculptor Mita Živković is made in bronze and is located in the park near the Gymnasium “Slobodan Škerović”.
BARUTANA MONUMENT
A monument on Barutana is a memorial dedicated to the inhabitants of Lješanska nahija, the victims of the liberation wars in the first half of the 20th century.
The monument was built according to the first-prize-winning conceptual design of the Montenegrin architect Svetlana Kana Radević, and its construction was completed in 1980, when it was opened to the public.
KING NIKOLA I PETROVIĆ NJEGOŠ
MONUMENT
This is the first monument in the Capital of Montenegro dedicated to Prince and King Nikola I Petrovic Njegoš (1841-1921), the seventh and last state ruler sovereign, warlord, diplomat and poet from Montenegrin dynasty Petrovic-Njegoš.
The monument was unveiled in 2005, in a park on St. Petar Cetinjski Boulevard, and the author of the monument is MSc. Risto Radmilović, an academic sculptor. The monument is located on a plateau across the road from the Parliament of Montenegro.
Nikola I Petrović was the last monarch of Montenegro, reigning from 1860 to 1918. He became the country’s first and only king in 1910, holding the title until 1918. The Congress of Berlin in 1878 recognized Montenegro’s independence, marking a significant moment in the nation’s history. In the following decades, Montenegro experienced significant prosperity and stability. During this period, there was substantial growth in education, infrastructure, communications and the military.
THE MONUMENT TO PRINCESS JELENA PETROVIĆ SAVOJA
The monument dedicated to Princess Jelena Petrović Savoy (1873-1952) is located near the Petrović Castle, between two parks - a children’s park and a court park.
The sculpture was made by Montenegrin sculptor Adin Rastoder. The artist’s idea was to present Princess Jelena as a young person and an embodiment of Montenegrin female wisdom, strength and beauty, free of all ornaments, crowns, royal ribbons.
The monument is made of bronze, and the pedestal is made of stone. It was ceremoniously unveiled on May 21st, 2021.
VALTAZAR BOGIŠIĆ
MONUMENT
Valtazar Bogišić (1834 – 1908) is the founder of Montenegrin legal thought, author of the General Property Code for the Principality of Montenegro, proclaimed in 1888 and translated into five languages, Minister of Justice of Prince Nikola and Professor of Slovene Law at the University of Odessa. The monument was unveiled on December 19th 2002, on the occasion of the Liberation Day of Podgorica. It is the work of Pavle Pejović, an academic sculptor and Maja Velimirović -Popović, an architect.
The monument is located (in July 13th Street) on a plateau in front of the building of the Faculty of Law.
PETAR II PETROVIĆ NJEGOŠ
MONUMENT
Petar II Petrovic-Njegoš (1830-1851) was the spiritual and secular ruler of Montenegro, poet and philosopher. As a ruler, he made the foundations of the modern Montenegrin state by establishing the Senate, the Guard and Perjanik and introducing tax payments. His most famous work, “Gorski vijenac“, is considered a masterpiece of South Slavic literature.
Njegoš was educated at several Serbian monasteries and became Montenegro’s spiritual and political leader after the death of his uncle, Petar the First. After overcoming initial domestic opposition, he focused on uniting Montenegro’s tribes and establishing a centralized state. Njegoš’s reign was also marked by ongoing political and military conflict with the Ottoman Empire, as he worked tirelessly to defend Montenegro’s sovereignty and strengthen its position in the region.
Petar II Petrovic Njegoš monument, the work of academic sculptor Sreten Stojanović, was built in 1954. and located in the park on the Boulevard of Stanko Dragojević. This was the first monument sculpture in Podgorica. The same monument sculpture was unveiled in front of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade in 1994 and in Rome in 2005, in Villa Borghese Park, not far from the historic city centre and the famous Piazza del Popolo.
FRANC PRESERN MONUMENT
Franc Prešern (1800 – 1849) monument is located in a park in Moskovska Street, in honour of the excellent political, economic and cultural relations between Montenegro and Slovenia. At the same time, a monument to Njegoš was built in Ljubljana.
The author of the monument is Rok Znidaršić, an architect from Ljubljana, winner of the largest Slovenian award in the field of art, the Prešern Award, while the monument to the Slovenian poet and the Prešern`s Park are gift from Vojislav Kovač, Honorary Consul of Montenegro in Slovenia.
DUKE MARKO MILJANOV MONUMENT
Marko Miljanov Popović (1833-1901), was a famous Montenegrin hero, duke, military leader and writer, born in Medun in 1833. He stood out with a clear mind, physical strength and courage. He was a brave warrior, duke and brigadier of Kuci and Bratonožići, senator and first military and civilian warden in liberated Podgorica in 1879.
The bronze statue of Duke Marko Miljanov was made on the occasion of the centenary of his death. The author of the monument is Oto Logo, the academic sculptor. It was unveiled on May 4th, 2001. The monument is located in Njegoševa Street, on a plateau in front of the Municipal building of the Capital City- Podgorica.
This bronze monument shows the famous Russian poet Pushkin reading poetry to his wife, Natalia Gonchareva. It is located on the corner of Njegoseva Street, near the Blazo Jovanovic Bridge.
The statue which is a gift from Moscow was built in 2002 as a sign of friendship between Russia and Montenegro and their cooperation in various fields.
ALEKSANDER PUSHKIN AND JELENA GONCHAROVA
MONUMENT TO DUKE MIRKO PETROVIĆ AND MONTENEGRIN
HEROES INVOLVED IN THE LIBERATION WARS
A monument dedicated to Duke Mirko Petrović and Montenegrin heroes involved in the liberation wars was one of the first public monuments in Montenegro. It is located on Independence Square and modeled after the original one, which was initially unveiled on 8th November, 1886, during the official opening of the landscaped square and attended by King Nikola. The original monument was demolished on 6th January 1919, after the dynasty Petrović was dethroned and Montenegrin state abolished.
CRNOGORAC MONUMENT
The monument represents a typical figure of a Montenegrin from past times and is made of white marble. It is located at the end of the Revolution Boulevard, between the Radio Television of Montenegro (RTCG) and the Kruševac business center.
The monument was unveiled in 2008 and is a work by the long-time RTCG employee, sculptor Milenko Vujošević, who donated the monument to RTCG and his city on this occasion.

THE CENTER OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS
Nestled in the most beautiful part of Podgorica, in the park in Kruševac, next to the Morača river is the Centre of Contemporary Art. The central object of the entire complex is the Petrović Castle, the former residence of the Petrović dynasty. It was built in 1891 and has the status of a cultural monument. The museum is housed in a historic building that once belonged to doctor Hrist (Rist) Kuslev, a prominent dentist who arrived in Montenegro in 1908. Born in 1883 in Kukuš (now in North Macedonia), Kuslev built a striking house in the 1920s, featuring distinctive Balkan architectural elements from the early 20th century. Remarkably, this building survived the bombing of 1944 and has served various purposes, most notably as part of the City Museum, to which it still belongs today.
