Una fiesta cultural llena de color, trajes folclóricos, danza y gastronomía es ElPaabanc. Esta ceremonia religiosa la celebran los maya q’eqchi’s en el departamento de Alta Verapaz.

Esta costumbre ha sido compartida de generación en generación y, aunque se festeja con diferentes variantes en el vestuario o comida, tiene la finalidad de “reafirmar mi creencia”.

Gastronomía

La organización se empieza una semana antes, cuando se elabora el boj, bebida a base de caña de azúcar, así como la preparación del kak’ik, carne de pavo preparada con verduras, especies y chile; el kiu, carne con recado; el poch, tamal salado o bien el k’en’, frijol negro, entre otras comidas típicas.

La fiesta se inicia el día del B’aquer, cuando se corta al ganado, luego sigue un estallido de fuegos artificiales y se presentan los C’ocpaabanc, quienes llevan candelas y se quema el pom que, según la tradición, son los alimentos de Dios.

Entre bailes y rezos

Al mediodía oirá el tamborón y la chirimía, mientras observa la procesión y escucha oraciones. El Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes (MCD) publicó el decreto en el que se declara el Paabanc como Patrimonio Cultural intangible de la nación; porque tiene gran valor histórico y artístico; además, contribuye al fortalecimiento de la identidad.

Además, la puesta en escena de dicha festividad que realiza el Ballet Folklórico nacional cumplió 50 años; por esto el MCD anunció que incluirá 5 bailes nuevos, así como la presentación de funciones.
