San Juan Chamelco, en el ombligo de la tierra San Juan Chamelco, in the navel of the earth

Uno de los primeros pueblos en ser habitados por q’eqchi’s en la época Precolombina en Guatemala es el de San Juan Chamelco, conocido como Chup Li Ch’och.

Creencia

Según los ancestros, este pueblo se encuentra en el OmbligodelaTierra y se cree que fue fundado por familias nómadas mayas. Entre sus personajes destaca Aj Poop B’atz’, a quien describen como un rey del área y quien dio hospitalidad a los españoles en la época de la Conquista.

Sin embargo, el lugar fue colonizado en 1543 y las costumbres y tradiciones fueron cambiadas. Actualmente celebran a su patrono, San Juan Bautista, con danzas folcklóricas como: Los Moros, El Venado, Toros, Diablos y ElToroSomatón.

Cultivos y artesanías

El lugar es conocido por sus cultivos de maíz, maguey, papa, frijol y piloy. Así como por su artesanía, la fabricación de joyería, cerería, teja de barro y construcción de muebles de madera. Además, fabrican hamacas, lazos y materia prima.

Lugares turísticos

En su visita déjese sorprender por los lugares que guarda este pueblo. Uno de ellos es el sitio arqueológico Chi Ch’en, que conserva lugares q’eqchi’s, así como tres plazas principales, dos canchas de juego de pelota maya, siete estructuras y estelas. En el lugar podrá observar piezas de lítica y cerámica y la representación del dios del maíz.

Ahora, si le gustan las aventuras podrá explorar las Grutas del Rey Marcos, un lugar donde se realizan rituales mayas, pero además ofrece experiencias místicas y llenas de aventuras, pues en el área puede practicar canopy, paseos en lancha o caminar por sus senderos.

Belief

According to the ancestors, this town is located in the Navel of the Earth. It is believed to have been founded by nomadic Mayan families. Among its characters, Aj Poop B’atz’ is described as a king of the area. He gave hospitality to the Spaniards at the time of the Conquest.

However, colonization came in 1543, and the customs and traditions changed. Currently, they celebrate their patron saint, Saint John the Baptist, with folkloric dances such as Dance of the Moors, The Deer Dance, and the Punch of the Bull dance.

The place is known for its crops of corn, maguey, potato, bean, and piloy beans. Its handicrafts, jewelry manufacture, pottery, clay tile, and wooden furniture construction add a particular feature. Other product production includes hammocks, ribbons, and raw materials.

Tourist attractions
