Asimismo, mencionó las estrategias que permitirán reducir el impacto de las emisiones y cómo su gobierno ha impulsado las fuentes renovables.

“Guatemala sigue en la línea de cumplir con su propia política energética. Prevemos que para el 2032 habremos superado el 80 por ciento de la energía eléctrica de Guatemala, producida por fuentes renovables”.

Alejandro Giammattei, President of the Republic of Guatemala, addresse the General Debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in New York, United States.

The President, in his visit, was accompanied by the Foreign Minister Mario Búcaro; the Minister of Economy, Janio Rosales; the Secretary of Social Communication of the Presidency (SCSP), Kevin López, and Ambassador Carla María Rodríguez Mancia, the new Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the UN.

A call for peace and commitment

During his speech, the President called for action to combat malnutrition and climate change. He also talked about stopping the war and “making the world a better place to live in peace, progress, development, and coexistence.”

“Finding a balance between health and the economy amid the pandemic, seeking the common well-being, has been one of the great challenges we have considered. Overcoming these challenges has allowed us to obtain excellent results”.

Promoting business

He highlighted that the Government of Guatemala took actions against the counter-cyclical fiscal policy and a credit monetary policy that contributed to the recovery of the economic activity and, as a result, growth of GDP of 8% in 2021.

Taking care of the environment

He also mentioned the strategies that will reduce the impact of emissions and how his government has promoted renewable sources. “Guatemala continues in the line of complying with its energy policy. We foresee that by 2032 we will have surpassed 80% of Guatemala’s electric energy produced by renewable sources.”

Finally, he called for the promotion of dialogue between nations to resolve differences and problems.
