For you, you, you and you. And you of course.
All over Sweden there are people who love theatre, dance and music. But your opportunities to enjoy performing arts may vary depending on where you live. However, we believe that everyone in Sweden should have the same access to high-quality dramatic art. This is where Riksteatern comes into the picture – from Kiruna in the north to Ystad in the south.

Riksteatern was founded more than 80 years ago. From the very start, the organisation was built on people’s commitment. Riksteatern associations all over the country help put together a local repertoire with hundreds of different productions from touring producers of theatre and dance. Together, we reach an audience that numbers in the hundreds of thousands every year, and we present a programme that appeals to everyone – no matter who you are, what you like or what your personal circumstances may be.

A key aspect of Riksteatern’s activities comprises the numerous own tours, which include international guest performances, productions for children and young people, the dance company Cullberg, and sign language productions with Riksteatern’s Silent Theatre. Around 50 different stage productions are produced for touring every year.

A popular movement throughout Sweden Riksteatern’s own tour productions are prepared by Riksteatern nationally. The local Riksteatern associations organise the majority of Riksteatern’s performances. Riksteatern is represented in every country of Sweden – the regional organisation is a coordinating body for the county-based associations and plays an important role in the regional development and promotion of performances
Affiliated organisations from all dramatic producers. Alongside the local Riksteatern associations, other organisations interested in performing arts are most welcome to join Riksteatern: schools, local authorities and other organisations. This form of affiliation has been set up to allow Riksteatern to function as an open organisation in the field of drama, even for organisations that are unable to align themselves with all the common business decisions of the association.

A public movement with a government mandate Local Riksteatern associations bring together almost 40,000 members interested in theatre, dance and music. Riksteatern associations gather for a congress every four years. Here they decide on goals and direction and elect the Riksteatern board. The regional Riksteatern organisation is a coordinating body represented in each county. Riksetatern receives government grants in the same way as the Royal Opera and the Royal Dramatic Theatre. The Swedish government appoints the Chairman of the Board of Riksteatern, and provides guidelines linked to the grant.
