IN SERVICE OF CULTURE EVERY DAY Without the non-profit movement Sweden would come to a halt. Or at least feel incredibly dull. Every week, thousands of people spend their spare time organising cultural events. Many of them are part of a Riksteatern association. Meet Ulrika Reinholdsson from KARIL – Cultural organisers in Linköping. The drive and the love of theatre means that thousands of committed, non-profit organisers defy weather, wind and lack of time to bring dramatic art to their towns. Like Ulrika Reinholdsson from the Riksteatern association KARIL – Cultural organisers in Linköping – for example. “I spend at least one hour per day on KARIL.” She has been a member of the board of directors of KARIL for a few years; a time filled with new acquaintances and lots of both new and old dramatic art.
“The power of the performing arts is fantastic” I have always been interested in politics and I cannot think of a better art form to change society than theatre and dance. Not to mention the power of popular movements. When people come together for a common cause, THAT really gets me going,” says Ulrika who is responsible for the repertoire in the association’s board of directors. Ulrika lists so many tasks that it seems unbelievable they could all be accomplished in just seven hours per week. Update Facebook, put up posters, book spaces, keep in touch with actors and producers, communicate with other members, remain up to date with what is happening in the Swedish world of theatre and in society, answer questions from members, hand out programmes, keep in touch with the press and evaluate events.

RIKSTEATERN ASSOCIATION KARIL Founded: 1997 Number of members: approx 600 Productions per year: approx 20 Purchases performances both from Riksteatern and other producers
“OK, perhaps it takes a little more than one hour per day,” she smiles. “But as tired as we may be after all the work we have put in before an event, we get as much energy back when we see the reactions in the lobby after the performance. The only thing I would wish for personally is a broader selection. I miss more social commentary-based productions because I think that people are tired of light and casual entertainment now and are looking for experiences that are truly meaningful.” Ulrika has about fifty season programmes in her bag. “I always have a bunch of them with me, as you never know who you will run into or where you might end up.” 5

ARTISTIC INITIATIVE AND A STRONG CIVIL SOCIETY Is it possible for Riksteatern to create art and culture that touches the lives of even more people? We raise the issue of Riksteatern’s artistic initiative and the importance of a strong civil society.

“Dance is an art form without boundaries! Riksteatern and the Cullberg Ballet tour the whole world; we encounter audiences of all ages and all nationalities. Dance reflects our times, but also connects our history with our future.” Mia Larsson, Managing Director of the Dance Department
“I want to see theatre as a force of change. When the actor interprets another human being, we in the audience are given the opportunity to identify with not only that which resembles us, but also what is different from us. It holds our society together.” Måns Lagerlöf, Managing Director of the Theatre Department
