Food for thought – and your emotions. Whatever you think and feel. Theatre, dance and music have a unique capacity to leave an impression on people. To ask questions, encourage dialogue and stir up emotions. Our job is to make the art of theatre available. To everyone. Everywhere. To create expansive and enduring experiences for hundreds and thousands of people every year. From drama to farce. For children and adults alike. In sign language and through sound alone. A broad and varied repertoire that might seem a bit scattered; but that’s because people are pretty scattered, too. Every single person is unique. Not everyone likes the same things – but everyone deserves to experience the same emotions. 3

A burning desire for the art of theatre. And thousands of firebrands who make it happen. Riksteatern – The Swedish National Touring Theatre – is more than “just” the touring stage company for the whole of Sweden. It’s a popular movement powered onwards by ‘thousands of firebrands – enthusiasts all over the country. From Ystad in the south to Kiruna in the north, there are people who are passionate about the art of theatre, and who work hard to bring the magic to their own local region. To make sure it’s not just the “same old same old”. To make sure people have something special to enjoy. More than 200 associations with almost 40,000 members who put in an incredible 280,000 voluntary hours a year through their passion and commitment. Without them, millions of encounters with the art of theatre would never have happened. This love of dance, theatre and music is something that unites us all. Together, we continue to work to make sure even more people can experience it – no matter who you are, where you live and what you like. 5

The art of the theatre cannot be described. It has to be experienced. It’s difficult to pinpoint precisely what theatre, dance and music do to us. And it’s absolutely impossible to describe the encounter in just a few lines. Of course, you can easily explain what’s happening on the stage, who is acting which role, and what you think of it. But there’s more to it than that. It’s all about experiences. Which, in one way or another, mean that you leave your seat a changed person. A warm feeling inside, a spark that lights a flame, or an opinion you need to rethink. Whatever happens, it happens right there, then and to you alone. Every performance that is played out features its own drama and logic. Every meeting with the audience makes magic happen. The art of the theatre always takes on different forms, but it never leaves anyone untouched. 7

Your stage. For everyone. Everywhere.

Riksteatern is a publicly financed popular movement established in 1933. The vision is to use the art of the theatre to stimulate thoughts, ideas and emotions – for everyone. Everywhere. A vision that has developed Riksteatern into what it is today. It is 50 years since we started to run activities for children and young people. The dance company Cullberg was founded under our patronage in 1967, since when it has achieved international recognition in the field of contemporary dance. And since 1977, Riksteatern’s Silent Theatre has worked consciously with theatrical performances in sign language. We are committed to continuing our work to bring the art of theatre to everyone who needs it. But it needs you, too. You can be more than a member of the audience. As a member of the association, you will be part of this thousands strong community of aficionados of theatre, dance and music that is Riksteatern. Welcome! Photo: Mikael Sundberg

A thriving popular movement throughout Sweden Aficionados of theatre, dance and music all over the country help make up almost 230 local Riksteatern associations. In addition to this, Riksteatern comprises a number of affiliated organisations. In each county, there is also a regional Riksteatern association that serves as a coordinating body for the local Riksteatern associations and affiliated organisations. THE MEMBERS Almost 40,000 aficionados of performing arts are members. They own the organisation. At their annual meetings, the local Riksteatern associations adopt their activity plan for the year, and appoint the members of the local board.
GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES As a non-profit organisation, Riksteatern receives subsidy from the Swedish State. The grant is accompanied by a commission in the form of guidelines concerning what Riksteatern is expected to do for these funds.
THE CONGRESS Riksteatern’s ultimate decisionmaking body meets once every four years. The event brings together representatives from the local Riksteatern associations to make joint decision on objectives and guidelines. The congress also elects the Riksteatern Board for the coming 4 year period.
MUNICIPAL AND REGIONAL AGREEMENTS In the same way as the government guidelines affect the national activities agreements with regional or municipal authorities – have an impact on the work and activities at regional and local level.
