Small places can give you amazing experiences. Thanks to you. Ever since Riksetatern – Sweden’s National Touring Theatre was founded in 1933, the organisation has been built on involvement. It is 50 years since we started to run activities for children and young people. Cullberg – an national and international repertoire contemporary dance company was founded in 1967, and Riksteatern Crea has been working consciously with theatrical performance in sign language since 1977. Today, we have thousands of people who have decided to enrich their local area working in more than 200 associations all over Sweden. Firebrands who are committed to ensuring the ability to give you experiences beyond the expected, and to helping carry culture forward. Without them, millions of encounters with theatre, dance and music would never have happened. 3

Riksteatern’s vision is performing arts that set thoughts and feelings in motion – for everyone, everywhere. Thanks to thousands of firebrands all over Sweden, we reach almost half a million people every year, where every encounter generates its own magic. Sharp satire, moving drama and grandiose musical productions. Or perhaps even astounding contemporary circus, ever-popular school performances and innovative dance. Our local repertoire comprises hundreds of productions of theatre, dance and music – and a large part of this is our own touring productions. We will continue to tour in order to bring you the light, music, dance, presence and everything else that only performing arts can provide.

We keep our distance when we have to. But we’re always close. The pandemic turned most of what we previously took for granted upside down. Performances were cancelled in the interests of public health, and we switched to digital solutions instead. However, the screen can never replace the emotions associated with seeing your ticket torn over, smelling the freshly brewed coffee and sensing the expectation rising in the auditorium. When village courtyards, culture centres and theatres stand empty, this inevitably creates a void which serves to underline the significance of culture. As the stage for the whole of Sweden, it is our responsibility to fill this void and satisfy the sense of longing that people all over the country are experiencing. Because when reality surpasses poetry, the longing for poetry becomes even more pronounced. No-one knows what the future holds. But we do know that we will continue to fill it with fantastic performances. 7

The encounter is brief. The memory lasts a lifetime. The encounter with performing arts is all about something you carry with you, or something that sparks a flame. An experience that touches and changes you. It might be the rippling social context or the encompassing storm of emotions. What the audience experiences together with the performers is something that will never happen the same way again. We have always known that it was important. But the longing to experience something in the present, together, has never been stronger. Much has happened since Riksteatern was founded – both on stage and behind the scenes. But we have no intention of ceasing to develop. Being constantly in motion, being influenced by people, events and encounters is a recipe for success. And this will never change.

A thriving popular movement throughout Sweden Aficionados of theatre, dance and music all over the country help make up almost 230 local Riksteatern associations. In addition to this, Riksteatern comprises a number of affiliated organisations. In each county, there is also a regional Riksteatern association that serves as a coordinating body for the local Riksteatern associations and affiliated organisations. THE MEMBERS Almost 40,000 aficionados of performing arts are members. They own the organisation. At their annual meetings, the local Riksteatern associations adopt their activity plan for the year, and appoint the members of the local board.
GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES As a non-profit organisation, Riksteatern receives subsidy from the Swedish State. The grant is accompanied by a commission in the form of guidelines concerning what Riksteatern is expected to do for these funds.
THE CONGRESS Riksteatern’s ultimate decisionmaking body meets once every four years. The event brings together representatives from the local Riksteatern associations to make joint decision on objectives and guidelines. The congress also elects the Riksteatern Board for the coming 4 year period.
MUNICIPAL AND REGIONAL AGREEMENTS In the same way as the government guidelines affect the national activities agreements with regional or municipal authorities – have an impact on the work and activities at regional and local level.

Cullberg Cullberg is a national and international repertoire company based in Botkyrka, just outside Stockholm. We work tirelessly to ensure that a large audience both in Sweden and abroad has the opportunity to experience contemporary dance. In partnership with choreographers and artistic teams from all parts of the world, we explore ideas about how to define, produce and present dance. This exploratory work is the very foundation of the company and our contribution to the development of dance as an art form. Cullberg is constantly in motion at the heart of the international dance scene. As from 2019, we have been working exclusively with three choreographers: Alma Söderberg, Deborah Hay and Jefta van Dinther. Cullberg has 17 active dancers who, together with the technical and production teams, play a key role in the creation of each and every work. Gabriel Smeets is the artistic director, and Stina Dahlström is the business managing director. Cullberg is a part of Riksteatern.
