This Day ft Jamela

When AJ was introduced to the industry many folks were quick to think this young muso will only just replicate his legendary father Arthur Mafokate’s hits to get by in this cruel industry. But all had to change when AJ threw a shock wave named ‘‘This day’’ on the dance floors nation wide. His sound is in no way similar to anything ever heard. I was very exited when he gave us the go ahead to reveal this piece of entertainment to you. This song is about a guy (Jamela) whos loved one left. Her departure left him with a very hectic mission to carry out on his own being to move on in life. Some lines I like in the song include“Its always a Mission going around the town when the only thing that comes to my mind is that you are gone’’. He then goes on to say ‘‘So all I do is hope that I will be with you.All I do is hope that I can make it through this day’’ Another paragraph goes like ‘‘Its been 3 weeks now and still I heard no word from you.I am going crazy cause all I do is missing you’’. How to Sustain a relationship

A few days ago a friend of mine asked me for advice on how to sustain a relationship, a strange request considering my track record with the opposite sex. None the less I tried my best to give some “sound” and “practical” advice. So I racked my brain trying to drop some pearls of wisdom and in the process I did a bit of soul searching with regards to the question of ‘how one sustains a relationship’ and more importantly why have I been so unsuccessful in sustaining or even making any real progress in the ones I’ve had. Being the young scholar I envision myself to be, I decided to take some time to do a bit of research into the inner workings of love, relationships and dating .While standing in a pay-point queue in a local supermarket, I read the following quote and thought to myself, how appropriate! It read: “Getting in a relationship is one of the most precious responsibilities of any couple. Most loving couples are working hand in hand in order to make their relationship work from day to day. Passing through the stage of getting to know each other better, courtship, and now in formal relationship, most

08

couples are finding ways on how to sustain a relationship”Maintaining a consistent romantic relationship is not that easy. There a lot of factors you need to take into consideration if you want to make your relationship go the distance (so I’ve been told by every other woman I’ve asked this nagging question). So I scanned the information highway that is the Internet in search of some tips I could “borrow” and I was quit intrigued by what some “experts” had to say. Here are some basic rules on how to ‘sustain a healthy relationship’ as given out by Dr. Barton Goldsmith a psychotherapist, columnist, radio host, speaker, and author of the book 100 Ways to Boost Your Self-Confidence: 1. Successful relationships take work. They don't happen in a vacuum. They occur when the couples in them take the risk of sharing what it is that's going on in their hearts and heads.

2. You can only change yourself, not your partner. If you love someone and think that after a while he or she will alter behaviors you find uncomfortable, think again. If you want changes, put them on the table. So your partner knows what you need. 3. All arguments stem from our own fear or pain. When upset occurs, check out what's going on inside of you rather than get angry with your partner. Truth is that we usually aren't upset for the reasons we think we are. 4. Understand that men and women are very different. We're not from Mars or Venus; we're not even in the same solar system. Understanding and celebrating our differences will make living together more peaceful, interesting, and fun. 5. Honor each other in some way every day. Every morning you have the opportunity to make your relationship sweeter and deeper by recommitting to your mate. Feeling respected and cherished by the one you love makes life much nicer. 6. Anger is a waste of time. Anger is also a relationship killer, because it makes you selfabsorbed and won't allow you to see the good. If you are annoyed with your mate, give yourself some time to calm down and then gently discuss what's going on for you.

09

7. Get regular tune-ups. Go to a couple’s workshop, talk with a counselor, or read a relationship book together at least once a year. Even if you don't think you need it, you will pick up a couple of ideas, and the process alone will strengthen your connection. 8. Find a way to become and stay best friends. For some this sounds unromantic, but for those who live it, most say it's the best part of their time together.

9. Be responsible for your own happiness. No other person can make you happy. It's something you have to do on your own. If you feel it's your partner's fault, think again, and look within to find out what piece may be missing for you. 10. Give what you want to get. Our needs change with time. If you'd like to feel understood, try being more understanding. If you want to feel more love, try giving more. It's a simple program that really works. Although some of the good Doctor’s advice made a lot sense, I did however find some of it to be rather impractical. Couple workshops!? Come on, whatever happened to “don’t hang your dirty laundry on the streets”? There’re just some things you can’t tell the one you love, no matter how badly you want to scream it in their faces. But I suppose it’s a lot more practical then that “Think like a man, act like a woman” book I read a few months ago.

Photos taken at: Folang Guest Manor

10

That’s the thing about relationships, they are complex yet simple at the same time and though we’d all love some kind of user manual to help us navigate through the rules and regulations, the protocol and procedures, the do’s and don’ts. There just isn’t one, and sure you go through the Internet, read a column in a magazine, pay some counsellor or see a movie based on a book; but all you’re going to get is a lot more of: do this, do that, buy this, buy that, sex this, sex that. Everything to do with nothing and nothing to do with what’s really going on in your relationship. Although sometimes you can always pin point what went wrong and how you could have made a difference, most of the time it’s not so simple. You could have woken up one morning and the person your next to just didn’t do for you anymore, you could have grown as a person while they remained stagnant, you both could have just grown apart and mutually felt that there was no point in going on. The truth is relationships are part of the things that you just might not have control over, and all you can do is try your hardest and hope it all works out.

! ! ! r e t a H

Ah February! The love month! Does this #$@%! have to be every year?? The half priced chocolates, overpriced flowers, two-for-one special cheesy novelty knick-knacks and soppy romance movies? An annual reminder of how much you suck at keeping a relationship or of how lonely and alone you are. Sad isn’t it? Valentine’s Day, the one day of the year were PDAs and maxing out your credit all in the name of love are some of the horrors you’ll unfortunately have to bare-witness to. If you’re like me however, and have no-one to cuddle up with or just get nauseated by the sight of love struck juvenile adolescents who can’t seem to keep their hands off each other for longer than five minutes; then you’re probably one of the many poor souls who are absolutely dreading the impending horrors of Saint Valentine’s wrath. Desperate for way out of having to be part of this annual torture? Fear not there, for there is hope. As a concerned and somewhat scorned former lover I’ve taken it upon myself to put together a list of activities to keep you preoccupied or just plain out of sight so you don’t have to feel the sting of cupid’s arrow:

14

You can just spend the night home, bitter and alone. You can protest fancy dinners and eat beans from the can with a fork. You can boycott candy and eat only salty snacks. You can watch movies in which love ends in tragedy and despair, hoping they will make you feel better.

Host an anti-valentine’s day party or a small informal gathering with other valentine hating friends, but remember to enforce a strict ban on couples, bright colors, stuffed animals or any open displays of affections

Compile a playlist of some of the darkest aspects of love and wallow in your own self-pity. Listen to artist such as Adele or even Taylor Swift and sing along and dance like nobody is watching (be careful that you don’t look like some kind of creep)

Get together all your friends who share your sentiments about love and have a bonfire (outdoors, in a safe fire pit) and burn old Valentine's Day cards and romance novels. Scribble on the covers of romance novels and romance movie cases (or photocopies of them) with markers, giving the people blackened teeth, glasses, and handlebar mustaches. Hang pictures of your "ex's" or of cupid on a bulletin board or dart board, and throw darts at it. Have a contest.

Spend the day at the cinema, but instead of

the usually cheesy, predictable romance movie. Indulge in marathon of some of romantic movies, action movies, science fiction, etc. But before you take to the streets dressed in all black chanting your anti-valentines slogan and feeling rather sorry for yourself, stop and take a moment to remember that it’s not all bad. Valentine’s Day is nothing more than a commercialized holiday with all the unhealthy notions about love and all the pressure it puts on a person's love life and thought it has been a source of human misery for too long, it still shouldn’t be something that bothers you to the point you feel the need to start your own anti-movement. Just remember that it’s just another holiday dreamt up by the greeting card and retail industry to part you with your hard earned money. Don’t fall in the trap, your bigger than all of this, take back Feb 14

Entrepreneurship The desired Mzanzi’s youth Lifestyle For so many times I have heard many South Africans together with our own government crying about the sky rocketing unemployment rate. I then decided to actually follow this national dilemma through with the aim of understanding its root cause. What I came up with is rather a disturbing and a sad reality that most of our youth grow up with a mentality that says ‘‘I need to get a job’’ rather than I need to create jobs. I mean think about it, Who will be willing to employ people just to down the rate?

16

Probably no one. Employers will always opt for the best of the best but unfortunately to prove your worth you need qualifications. Now what about the talent and skills? In most cases talent is not written or proven at school. But in our era you find talented people on the same queue with qualified minority waiting to be employed. Why is this? Because the life cycle of an ordinary SA citizen is as simple as Primary school, Secondary school then Varsity or tertiary level after which employment of that citizen must conclude the life cycle. Have you ever think of the following?

By T.H Muofhe

If you are ever going to get that job you are waiting for or if you are currently employed by someone,Your employer is using you to get his job done for a price that you have very little control or influence over and that is your salary. Now think about it, If you were to sell those services to your employer, your price would be higher than what you are being given right now isn't it?Now if that is the case why do we need to be employed instead of being entrepreneurs and sell our talents and skills for a better price? To be continued in the next issue!!

Happy Service Sellers

The first time I heard about Cruz was on TV while he was was performing his music video called a ‘‘letter from a fan’’. Because of his ability to lay vocals on a Hip-hop beat,I developed much respect for him since that day. He describes himself as a stage performer,Song writer and a producer. However I think he is a little more than that, maybe a stage performer,Song writer and a producer of note. Cruz enjoyed the lime light when his single phakamis ikwaito landed a # 1 spot on Yfm’s kwaito hot 99 for two hot weeks. His music found its way to major radio and TV stations such as Metro fm and SABC1. His songs were previously featured as sound tracks for a well known drama Zone 14 on SABC 1,He has also been featured on shows such as Yo Tv(wild room mega), Soweto tv’s Kasi Vibes,Music lounge on SABC 1,etv’s crazy e and Hectic 99 on SABC 2. Fashion!! Through my eyes

That moment when fashion is the only way you know how to communicate with the world. So what does this mean? That fashion is considered art, a way of life – and not just a way of getting noticed. Sure, there are some people who use brand names to make a name for themselves, but you see fashion as more of an experience than simply a noun. Behold: the definitive “fashionista”.There are so many trends in fashion and at this present moment the fashion industry is bringing back old trends such as vintage look. We all have certain fashion style we feel comfortable with, which we feel best defines who we are. The clothes we wear tell a total story about who we are, who we aspire to be and help us connect with the next individual. Its quiet amazing the effect of colourful clothes in your mood. Days when you feel grumpy and sad wear a colourful top, dress or anything that has a bit of colour and immediately something inside of you lifts up. We also make clothes look stylish with our unique features, body sizes and taste.Fashion trends evolve with seasons and centuries. Designers get inspired by so many different elements which are precisely evident on the designs just like you deciding on what to wear it is inspired by your mood that day and influenced by the place you might be going to and the occasion you could be attending. Fashion is all about inspiration.Trends are fantastic – you appreciate that they keep things fresh and give designers new platforms for creativity – but if you’re a slave to “what’s hot”, be careful not to lose your personal sense of style and to date yourself with an abundance of “ins”. Try pairing animal print with cigarette pants and a plain V-neck shirt, or wear a leather mini with a basic grey tank and ankle boots. You may want to stay on top of the ever-evolving world of fashion, but don’t lose your essence in the process.

20

I was wondering what some of you think of today's evolving fashion; I think that people should be their own person and show off their personality the way they want to, not how others want them to. But for women especially, what's with the t-shirts that are like a mile long to your knee caps, or looking for a nice coat or shirt only to find it's half way long. Or even some of the pants. A lot of the clothes look grumpy, skanky or like maternity wear. Now there are some clothes out there that do look good and it's cool; there are different styles matching different decades, but I think fashion was best in the late 90's to early/mid 2000's. Especially t-shirts and tops.

Young and bold with future sparkling possibilities. The most amazing thing about life is when you realize that you may not be as rich as you want to be but you being yourself is the most valuable thing money can't afford. When you are young, talented, in and about with the latest trends one of the most difficult thing to deal with is pressure from all points of the universe, pressure to fit into a certain circle of friends, pressure to own label clothes and be of certain status but then when you come to think of it, is it all worth it? No, not really because at one time all those things fade, fake friends leave you when you broke and can no longer keep up with the demands of a certain status so the best option is to be yourself and act your status because then you will attract friends that appreciate you for who you really are. . Like Joe Osteen said ‘Hard times may have held you down, but they will not last forever. When all is said and done, you will be increases”. One of the most incredible thing to remember is that as young as you are your mind is the most powerful weapon you own. It literally breaks down all the boundaries that fear once created and it offers you the ability to explore your full potential. You are the most expensive brand you could ever own because nobody can ever be you, which is why it’s best if you ever compete with anything but with yourself by trying to be better than the person you were yesterday. To be young, free and bold is so inspiring, everything is at your fingertips waiting for you to click the possibilities away. Never let doubts stop you from taking a calculated risk on something that could bring out the best in you. Learn from your mistakes as well because it is from mistakes that we learn a lot about ourselves. The best teacher is probably life itself and don't forget fun is order of the day, be happy. You are only young once so celebrate that.

22

Travel the world, see places, experience new culture, tradition and indulge in the landscape of a different location because travelling broaden your perspective in life. New experiences are a chance for selfgrowth. Mandy Hale said “Once you make the decision to move on don’t look back. Your destiny will never be found in the rearview mirror”.There are many things which you are capable of doing, some hidden talents you won't know about until you take chances and try out in different fields to see what is it exactly that you are good at. Remember, every individual is unique with their own God-given gifts

The Impact of Cheating on the Economy

Written by Sassy

Ever heard the phrase “Sons are a heritage from the Lord”? It actually comes out of the Bible! Way back in Bible times, a man’s worth was somewhat determine by the number of children he had. Given the fact that no one woman could, can and never will give birth to a rugby squad, men back in those days had more than one ‘WIFE’. This enabled them to have as many kids as they could; and trust me it was not a matter of being able to ‘afford’ those kids! What made reproduction so copious back then was also the fact that the world population was very low in comparison to nowadays. Having children counted in tens might not be a smooth course to tread today, though. Let me illustrate:If a man owned 100 ha of land and had 10 sons, upon his death all ten sons will be entitled to 10ha of land. If each of those 10 sons has 10 children of their own, each of those children will have a hectare. If each of those children has 10 children of their own, the latter will have only 1000m2 of land. Given the fact that land appreciates in value, do you not agree that the latter generation will always be poorer than the former? And that ladies and gents is the back bone of my argument! The desire to reproduce has not, in any way decreased from Bible times to today!

24

Women unfortunately cannot keep up. After three babies, her body wants to give in. Driven by the urge to want to spread their seed, most men cheat. But you see, this argument is very flawed. If wanting to reproduce is the reason for the cheating why use contraceptives?? However, I wish not to entertain that reasoning as that’s not really relevant to my take on the topic. So how does it affect the economy? This is how: 1. Boosted Ego-During my intense research in preparation of this article, I read the following on the website askmen.com, ‘men cheat to boost their ego’. You see, when in a long relationship, a man may begin to question his sexual marketability. “Once a man knows he can get back in the game, he will return to his mate”. But is that really so?I came across a lot of Xhosa men and given their notorious fame with women, I thought they would help me understand this concept better. In response to why men cheat, I was told “ikhwapha lu qinisa umshato” meaning having an affair strengthens a marriage bond. If he goes home to a happy wife, he will be very productive at work! His productivity at work, boots our economy. So, a boosted ego = a boosted economy!

Written by Sassy

2. Population effects-Cheating often results in unwanted pregnancies. A survey was conducted in USA in April 2012 by usatoday.com and revealed that more and more kids are born out of wedlock and the number keep on increasing. I doubt South Africa would be lagging far behind. The increase of child births out of wedlock has gotten to a point where the South African government has enacted the “Children Born out of wedlock” Act in an attempt to make natural fathers take responsibility of their young. This came about because of the fact that a man would have children out of wedlock with his “ikhwapha” and children with his wife as well. Given the setting of the illustration at the outset, he might not be able to support both families resulting in abandonment of his responsibilities. Meaning more taxes have to be levied on the rest of us who take our responsibilities seriously in order to feed that man’s children! Bloody irresponsible fathers!

3. Productivity of a work force-So the wife has found out that the “ikhwapha” is pregnant, Johnnie is now strung. At this point anything can happen, the wife may decide to leave him or to stay but even if she were to stay, things will never be the same again. Either way, Johnnie is not productive because for the eight hours he sits in that cubicle, he’s busy wondering why he cheated, what is going to happen now, whether he’ll be able to afford another baby, whether he can play the “it’s not mine” card, etc. On the other hand, the “ikhwapha” is also strung, thus reducing her productivity. Wanting to prove that she can do it by herself and without Johnnie’s assistance, and because she wants to give her baby a good or better shot at life, she gets financial assistance. She then applies for a loan or increases her credit facility. That year, her company decides to reduce its work force and she’s unfortunately retrenched. How is she going to pay back the loan?

So, boosted ego = unwanted pregnancies = more taxes!

Boosted ego = babies = stress = low productivity = high chance of being fired

25

Written by Sassy

4. Illnesses and diseases-In his article “Wellness in the work place”, Mark Isaacson wrote “the success of any company depends heavily on the productivity and performance of its employees”. Infidelity increases the risks of one contracting STIs. These will in turn an employee’s performance in the workplace. Research shows that in a majority of cases, a healthier employee is more productive than one who lives with a chronic illness. The world’s highest rates of AIDS/HIV infections are found in Swaziland. According to the “African Economic Outlook”, in 2011, Swaziland experienced a severe fiscal crisis that set back economic and social development. South Africa extended a helping hand a few years back but that loan is lying in limbo. Swaziland depends heavily on South Africa to keep its economy alive. Its own currency is pegged to the South African rand! It is no wonder then that a country’s economy depends largely on the well being of its citizens.

With

1.What exactly is Kasi 2 Kasi?We are an entertainment brand that seeks to expand and diversify in clothing, events, transportation and social networking. Our aim is also to uplift and create jobs for the people of “ekasi”. 2.How did the idea come about? We were caught by the social network bug and so we decided that a “kasi” orientated social network that specifically considers which “kasi” one comes from or lives in and therefore allow an even exchange of those who reside in it in terms of community projects and social development programs. 3.How many people are directly involved in the creation of the Brand? We are a team of four viz. Zipho Zwane who handles our finances, Keneilwe Tloubatla who is our very talented and creative designer, Thabang Dikhothu who’s responsible for sales and ensures that our operations run smoothly and last but not least, Thulane Radebe the marketing master mind.

28

4.What is you take on local brands and their general acceptance by the South African retail industry? It’s foggy because it doesn’t really give “up and coming” brands a chance to fully expand, unless there is a major investor involved. 5.Where do you see the brand in the next 5 years? 10? 50?In the next five years we’d like to start chain stores of strictly Kasi2Kasi merchandise. In the long-term, we’d like to take the brand trans country, to have deals with our neighboring countries like Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. 6.How important is team work in business? For us, team work is critical because although we pull in different directions we pull for the same course which allows the business to grow in leaps and bounds.
