Last two days as 3rd Years Monday the 30th and Tuesday the 31st were two busy days. On Monday we had study skills workshops from our two wonderful guidance councillors. They gave us some last minute advice on planning, timetable, looking after our physical and mental health and of course studying! At lunchtime a treat was planned and there are photos of that later in this newsletter. On Tuesday we had class in the morning and then our final assembly in the Gym.
We then had Mass organised by Ms. Fields in the school Chapel. Fr. Paddy Boyle officiated at this Mass that was just for 3rd years. Róise, Layla and Rachel, accompanied by Mr. Woods provided music. Grace did the Responsorial Psalm. Ms. McGarry did the reading. Prayers of the faithful were read by Keeva, Isobelle, Keeva and Ella. Cuileann spoke of the symbolism of the gifts, that were brought to the altar by Ciara, Gabia, Kate, Colleen, Toni, Jessica, Abbie and Kayleigh. MS. Dunwoody read the Communion Reflection. It was a lovely end to our last two days in school as junior students.
At the Assembly we especially remembered our friend and class mate Grace Kelly, who sadly passed away in 2nd Year. Her loss has been deeply felt by all of Manor House, and particularly by her base class, year group and her teachers. The will be a perpetual award which will be, from next year on, be given to a 2nd year in Grace’s memory. The Grace Kelly Memorial Award will be given to a 2nd Year that is kind, funny, gentle, positive… everything that Grace epitomised. This year however the award was given to Grace’s base class who were such a support to Grace in the short couple of years she was with us in Manor House. Thank you to Grace’s family Parents, Paul and Loretta and brothers, Sean and Brendan who came to the school on Tuesday 31st May to present the award to class 3Q. We will remember Grace forever.

Our Year Trip to The Zoo
On Thursday the 28th April the whole Year headed to Dublin Zoo for the day. We had our roll taken in the old Hall at 9am and then went on two coaches to the Zoo, in the Phoenix Park. When we were in the Zoo we were divided into three groups and were introduced to the zoologists that work in the zoo who brought us around. They explained to us about the animals that are endangered and what conservationists and zoo programs are doing to help these animals. It was interesting and informative. When we finished the workshop we were free to walk around, have lunch, head into The African Plains and see all the animals. The weather stayed dry and we had a great time with our friends in the wonderful Dublin Zoo. Thank you to Ms. Dunwoody and Ms. Guinan who organised the day for us.
There was drama at the end of the day when we discovered one of our drivers had an accident and had to go to hospital! (He was ok in the end). We only had one double decker to take us home! Not all students could not fit on the bus! Here are the students literally left on the road side.
Thankfully not for long: Ms. Sullivan, Ms. Maher, Ms Bridget and Ms. Gilroy accompanied them back to school in taxis. So we all had a great day!

A big thank you to the Class Teachers. Ms. Gilroy, Mr. Beirne and Ms. McGarry have supported, helped, advised and been endlessly patient with 3rd years since first year. Ms. Hennigan ably took over from Ms. Kelly in second year. We are very grateful for all they did for us. Have a lovely Summer!
The exams will come to an end and the long hot (hopefully) days of summer stretch ahead… Here are some ideas for things to cook, watch and do this summer.
Chicken Caesar Wrap: Here is how to make a simple, quick and easy chicken Caesar wrap in four easy steps.
Ingredients: 1 cup lettuce 1 slice of bacon, cooked 1/2 cup cooked, shredded chicken 2 tablespoons Caesar dressing 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup of croutons 1 large tortilla wrap Method: 1. In a bowl, combine the lettuce, bacon, chicken, dressing and Parmesan. Stir to combine. 2. Roughly chop the croutons, then stir them into the filling mixture 3. Microwave the tortilla for 10-15 seconds so that it will be easy to roll. Spread the lettuce mixture down the middle of the tortilla. Fold in the two sides of the tortilla, then roll up like a burrito. 4. Cut wrap in half to serve and enjoy!
Strawberry Limeade: Here’s a simple summery iced drink to enjoy with your wrap. Ingredients: 1/2 cup lime juice 1/3 cup sugar 1/3 cup water 1/3 sliced strawberries 20-30 mint leaves 2 cups cold water
Method: 1. To make the simple syrup, combine the sugar and water in a saucepan, and cook over medium high heat for 5-10 minutes until the sugar is dissolved and the liquid is clear. 2. In a large mason jar or a pitcher, combine the lime juice, simple syrup, strawberries, mint, and water. Let sit in the refrigerator for 2-3 hour. 3. Serve and enjoy!
Summer Fruit salad Ingredients 1 red or green apple 2 tangerines or small oranges, peeled 12 black or green grapes 1 medium banana, peeled 2 kiwi fruits, peeled 1 large thick slice of pineapple, fresh or canned 1 glass of fresh unsweetened orange juice - you can also use grape, pineapple or apple juice Method 1. Wash the apple and then cut into quarters removing the core. Cut into chunks
2. Divide the tangerines or oranges into segments 3. Wash grapes and half each one 4. Cut banana and kiwi fruit into slices 5. Cut pineapple into chunks 6. Place all fruit in the bowl, add the orange juice and mix well 7. Next serve with ice cold water and enjoy!
Summer Berry Smoothie: Ingredients: 1 cup frozen strawberries 1 cup frozen blueberries 1 banana 1 cup frozen cherries 4 ice cubes ½ cup orange juice ¾ cup vanilla yogurt ½ teaspoon honey
Directions: Place the banana, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and ice cubes into a blender. Pour in the orange juice, vanilla yogurt, and honey. Puree until smooth.
GARLIC BREAD INGREDIENTS:
60g softened butter 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 part-baked white baguette
METHOD: 1. Put the butter and the garlic in a bowl and mix well. Spoon the butter out onto a sheet of grease proof papers and roll up to make a sausage-shaped log. Chill for 10 mins in the fridge. 2. Heat oven to 200C. Slice the baguette into about 12 slices but not all the way through so the base is intact. 3. Remove the grease proof paper from the butter and thinly slice on a chopping board. Place each slice of butter between the slices of bread. 4. Wrap the baguette in tinfoil, place on a baking tray and bake for 5–6 mins, hi then peel back the tinfoil. Cook for a further 4–5 mins to crisp up.
Summer pizza Ingredients DOUGH (8 PIZZAS) 800 g strong white bread flour 200 g fine ground semolina flour or strong white bread flour 1 level teaspoon fine sea salt 2 x 7 g sachets of dried yeast 1 tablespoon golden caster sugar TOMATO SAUCE (4 PIZZAS) 1 clove of garlic 1 bunch of fresh basil olive oil 1 x 400 g tin of quality plum tomatoes TOPPING (4 PIZZAS) 85 g mozzarella cheese
Method 1. For the dough, pile the flours and 1 level teaspoon of sea salt onto a clean surface and make a well in the centre. 2. Add the yeast and sugar to 650ml lukewarm water, mix together and leave for a few minutes, then pour into the well. 3. a fork and a circular movement, slowly bring in the flour from the inner edge of the well and mix into the water. Continue to mix, bringing in all the flour – when the dough comes together and becomes too hard to mix with your fork, flour your hands and begin to pat it into a ball. 4. Knead the dough by rolling it backwards and forwards, using your hands to stretch, pull and push the dough. Keep kneading for 10 minutes, or until you have a smooth, springy, soft dough. 5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave in a warm place to to prove for 45 minutes, or until doubled in size. 6. For the sauce, peel and finely slice the garlic, then pick the basil leaves and finely chop the stalks. 7. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan on a medium-low heat, add the garlic and basil stalks, then cook gently for a couple of minutes, or until the garlic is lightly golden, then add most of the basil leaves, the tomatoes, and a pinch of salt and pepper. 8. Leave the sauce to tick away for around 20 minutes, or until smooth, breaking up the tomatoes up with a wooden spoon. When the time’s up, taste, and season to perfection. 9. To assemble the pizzas, divide the dough in half. Wrap one half in clingfilm and freeze for another day. With the remaining half, divide the dough into 4 equal balls. 10. Flour each dough ball, then cover with clingfilm, and leave to rest for about 15 minutes – this will make them easier to roll it thinly. 11. Dust a clean surface and the dough with a little flour or semolina, and roll it out into a rough circle, about ½cm thick. 12. Tear off an appropriately sized piece of tin foil, rub it with olive oil, dust well with flour or semolina and place the pizza base on top. Continue doing the same with the remaining dough, dust with a little flour so you can pile them up. Cover with clingfilm and place in the fridge. 13. When you're ready to cook them, preheat the oven to 250°C/500°F/gas 9. 14. At this stage you can apply your topping: spread the tomato sauce over the base, spreading it out to the edges. Tear over the mozzarella and scatter with the remaining basil leaves. Drizzle with a tiny bit of olive oil and add a pinch of salt and pepper. 15. If you can, cook the pizzas on a piece of granite in your conventional oven – if not, cook them one by one on pieces of tin foil directly on the bars of the oven shelf, towards the bottom of the oven (If you're going to cook your pizzas on the bars of the oven, make sure they're not too big – otherwise they'll be difficult to manoeuvre). Cook for 7 to 10 minutes, until the pizzas are golden and crispy.
Sparkling lemonade Ingredients
3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup lemon zest strips (about 1-1/2 lemons) 3/4 cup lemon juice (about 3 lemons) 1 cup club soda, chilled Method
1. In a small saucepan, heat sugar and water over medium heat until sugar is dissolved, stirring frequently. Stir in lemon strips. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Cool slightly. 2. Transfer to a pitcher. Stir in lemon juice; cover and refrigerate until chilled. Discard lemon strips. Stir in club soda. Serve over ice.

Pizza Party
On the 30th May a pizza picnic was planned for third years. The reason? You can pick… End of Term/ End of Third Year/ End of Junior Cycle/ Pre-Junior Cert./ Just because it’s Monday! The food, crisps, sweets, pop-corn etc. was organised by members of the Buddy Committee and SEE Team for their year group. In typical Irish fashion, despite the weather being lovely on the previous week, it was cold and overcast on Monday. However 3rd years refused to let that stop the picnic so mats were pulled out in the Gym and everyone managed to have a nice end of year party as the pictures show. Thank you to the members of the SEE team and Buddy Committee for this and all their efforts over the last three years
Dear Third Years, Can you believe you are finished3rd year! It really has flown past. It has been a long and in some places difficult three years. You have done so well coping with the challenges of classes and Covid, social distancing and social media, swapping lockers for lock down and vacations for vaccines! Let’s remember however there is no situation that does not have some positives. Look how well you have managed and now you are aware that you are stronger and more resilient then you know. Be proud of yourselves, I am proud of you. However as you end your time Junior Students you must first overcome the Junior Cert. So give it your best shot for these last few days. It will pass so quickly and then you can enjoy your summer knowing you did your best. I am really looking forward to seeing you grow and mature even more in TY, and make the most of all the opportunities it will bring for you. So all that is left for me to say is Good Luck in Junior Cert. Exams, have a lovely summer and I will see you in September,
