QUARANTINE QUOTES! By Katie, Julie and Hannah

It is very important to stay positive during this pandemic for our mental health so here are a few quotes we liked and picked out. They are by some very inspiring people.

Donor Cards By Rachael and Grace Make the greatest possible act of generosity by giving a gift of life. Why carry a donor card? Organ failure is a devastating event in the lives of people. It occurs without regard for either age or circumstances. Parents, children, the old or the young, may be asked to face this challenge. For many, organ donation can be the means to regain normal life. There are around 590 people in Ireland waiting for an organ transplant.

One deceased organ donor can save up to 8 lives. What is organ donation? Organ donation takes healthy tissues and organs from one person so they can be transplanted into another person, replacing their organs that are not healthy. The organs that are suitable to donate are the heart, kidneys, lungs, liver and pancreas. Why is this important to our class? Grace is in 2R and is currently waiting for a heart transplant. We want her to get better and get her new heart. A message from Grace

I’m Grace, I’m waiting for a heart transplant. I have a heart problem & I have been getting sicker and weaker lately. I hope to be gifted the perfect heart from an angel donor.

Importance of Being Kind By Adriana and Ciara The importance of being kind is how you effect other people and their mood and their self-esteem. Due to Covid-19 there is a lot of people going through a hard time. Not being able to see friends or family. One piece of kindness goes a long way, example just saying “Hello” or giving a compliment to someone can make their day!

Back in December 2020 2R decided to write some letters filled with positivity to The Residents in St Patrick’s Nursing home in Baldoyle. Each girl in our class made a card with a positive message and we each wrote a letter to tell the residents a little about ourselves. We then posted the cards in Raheny village.

Other Ways we can show kindness Video call family living outside your 5km Meet somebody who is living alone for a coffee

Give somebody a smile and a hello as you pass them

Bring a high risk persons pet for a walk 10

Do shopping for your grandparents or elderly neighbours

This vaccine should improve our immunity (protection) from COVID-19. If people are vaccinated, it should reduce the numbers who get the virus in our community. Vaccines are currently being given out in Ireland to the elderly, Health care workers and vulnerable adults.

Ms McGarry got her first vaccine on Tuesday 23 rd March.

Where did you get the vaccine? I got my vaccine in Beaumount hospital.

Why have you already got the vaccine? I had a stem cell transplant in 2018 and my lymphocyte blood count are still very low (my immune system). I attend Beaumount every month to get immunoglobulin infusions to help this. For this reason, I am regarded a vulnerable adult at very high risk for COVID-19 and I got the vaccine.

How did you feel getting it? Very excited, this is me getting one step closer to returning to school. The computer just isn’t the same. I really miss seeing everybody in person.

Are you now immune to COVID-19? It takes 3 weeks, after getting the first dose, for the vaccine to work. In 12 weeks’ time I will get a second vaccine in order to have the best protection from COVID-19. They do not know yet if having the vaccine completely stops the virus so I will still follow social distancing guidelines, wear my face covering and wash my hands regularly until we get further guidance from the HSE.

Interview with Ms Guinan Our Year Head By Isobelle, Ella and Brooke.

We would like to thank Ms Guinan for taking the time to answer our questions and give us a little insight into her life in Manor House.

Q1. How long have you been teaching at Manor House? This is a scary question! The years have flown by and I find it hard to believe I have been teaching so long but, since you asked, 26 years! (Yes, I really am that old!)

Q2. How long have you been a year head? Nearly 20 years. I was Year Head to my first group from they were in 1st year until they graduated. The next group I picked up in TY and was Year Head for 3 years. When they left, I got my third group and had them once again from 1st to 6th. The fourth group I was Year Head to was from TY to 6th. So that makes the current 2nd years my fifth group of students! So, they should know I have heard all the excuses before! Be warned! (Not that any 2nd year would dream of making up a story!)

Q3. Which subjects do you think is easier to teach at home? Don’t really know! There are advantages and disadvantages to teaching all subjects.

14

Q4. How are you finding online teaching? It is certainly easier this time around, but it is much harder than teaching in school. One of the hardest things is not seeing my students. I miss the interactions and the energy and dynamic of the classroom. It is so hard talking to a screen and not getting any feedback.

Q5. What do you do to keep yourself occupied other than schoolwork? When the weather is nice I like to go to the beach or to the park for a walk. I work in my garden sometimes. I like following different series on Net flicks. My main hobby however is history and genealogy, and I often help other people research their family trees. I also love reading my favourite authors and re-reading my favourite books. Q6. Do you rather be working in school or at home teaching? Definitely in school. Q7. Are you giving your students the same amount of work as you would in the classroom? I try and keep it the same, but it is harder to cover material online, so we are probably getting less done. Q8. Do you have any advice for 2nd years? It is actually very simple...

Treat others as you would like to

be treated. Sometimes an easy thing to do but sometimes a challenge! But even if you think someone is being mean remember they might be having a difficult time outside of school and be nice to them... It will make their day better and, in the end, it will make your life easier.

St Patrick’s day ☘ ☘Lá Fhéile Pádraig☘ By Brooke and Demi-Leigh Why do we celebrate St Patrick’s day? We celebrate St Patrick’s day as it was the day that Saint Patrick died. Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland. St Patrick’s day is now celebrated all over the world but especially here in Ireland How is St Patrick’s day celebrated traditionally? On St Patrick’s day there is a traditional St Patrick’s day parade in Dublin. People would wear the colour green to celebrate St Patrick’s day How Covid has effected St Patrick’s day On the 13th of March 2020 Ireland went into lockdown, it was decided that the annual St Patrick’s day parade would not go ahead along with types of celebrations and gatherings. This year for the second year in a row the celebrations were cancelled as gatherings are not aloud

What was done this St Patrick’s day around the world?

You can see in these photos that, the Sydney opera house ,Niagara falls, the Christ de Redeemer statue , Arás an uachtaráin and Trinity College and much more went green for St Patrick’s day. In Raheny there was some street music for all to enjoy (at a distance).
