INTRODUCTION PRESENTS: LEARNING OUTCOMES.

X

Within July 2019 and January to March 2020, Ms Wilson was employed by two successful design companies that taught Ms Wilson various design strategies. Within the 13 weeks of being on placement and the internship. Ms Wilson was exposed to commanding applications such as Adobe Suite and CAD, which in the end; improved the set-skills that Ms Wilson had. Ms Wilson’s experience, paved from leading self-projects, was confident within presentations, design-developments and implementing strategies that were used to develop her skills. Collaborating at Giles Miller Studio was an eye-awakening experience. Ms Wilson had learnt the developmental processes of showcasing how a 3D design would be crafted and designed to achieve the company’s design ethos. Within the process, Ms Wilson took part in designing many variations of 2D colour and pattern concepts, which were used as a guideline to create CAD profiles. Ms Wilson targeted the business’s objective, which is to design “…the relationship between material and light.” – Miller. G (2020) within her internship. During any design stage, it was essential for any concept development to transform into another medium, such as model-making. Ms Wilson thrived on constructing and allocating parts of a design, which would keep towards a design intent. Model-making developed the design stage, as it allowed more opinions and ideas to blossom, which formed a visual guide of what our aim was heading towards. The most important learning outcome for Ms Wilson became the research and the association of mood boards. This route propelled ideas from gathering trends, themes, and details; which was influenced from. This unified task had directed Ms Wilson to utilise this method within all projects throughout her experience, which helped Ms Wilson allocate the design intention towards the client’s needs.

ABOUT GILES MILLER.

//4 Figure 1: the GMS “...design team installing ‘Lotus’ last year in Guilin City, China.” - 2019, Youngman

Giles Miller Studio was born in 2010 in South London: Deptford, which is formed of a small team. The distinctive designs are revealed in the form of geometric shapes, that are worked upon sculptures, surfaces, and architecture. The company creates a focus on the art of manipulation when creating a spectacle of movement. Initially, the designs are brought to life by embodying and enriching the essence of ‘material meets movement’ and the binding relationship between material and light.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES.

Within the week of the internship, Ellie Youngman taught; the studio specialises in three areas of design: Surfaces, Architecture and Sculptures. Depending on the client’s requirements and style, Miller’s designer Ellie would consult and present, past projects, showcasing the three-set shapes used within their design guidelines. Samples of passed design sequences, styles and colours are also brought to meetings, so that clients can visualise what approach they would like to purchase. Working with the team, Ms Wilson contributed on a Vineyard Bar surface brief, where the owner Olivier Leflaive, who owns an Italian vineyard company, wanted an organic vineyard inspired sequence. From the customer’s requirements, the team and Ms Wilson took inspiration and came together to compile a series of images, which embodied the element of nature and symmetry. Assisting with Giles Miller himself; on his first-ever architectural sub-sector design, was very exciting. The design incorporated a mechanism, which was tested; to reveal light and shadow. This style was different from his original past pieces, but the system expressed the notion of light and movement working together.

COMPETITORS, SUPPLIERS, CUSTOMERS.

Giles Miller’s top supplier is the Material Lab; based in London. The Material Lab is a design resource and materials library, which holds various surfaces for commercial design purposes. Ms Wilson had the opportunity to visit the Material Lab and gather samples of materials and finishes for ideas, that the company could implement during the internship. As Giles Miller is an established luxury surface design company, Ms Youngman, explains that “our work is so unique, it is hard to name competitors.” The latest award that Giles Miller Studio won was the surface design award in 2016, at the Clerkenwell design show. As there were other competitors for the award, company’s such as Bogle Architects, Shellshock Designs & IBI Group can be claimed as the competitors of Giles Miller Studio.

STRUCTURE OF GILES MILLER STUDIO.

The studio has a small operational team that consists of designers, admin workers and tech workers. Giles Miller is the head of the company, followed by the two CAD technicians that handle the details of the design. This can vary from CAD designs, Adobe Illustrator visuals, contacting the design team/assemblers on the client’s behalf, material-research and designing the company’s own sequence key. Ellie Youngman is the sales and design consultant who would strategies both the social media platform, the website of the business, and would meet with clients internationally and locally. The company also has a product designer that would design the shape of the materials, create the branding: logos, renders, portfolios, and Illustrator visuals. Tim, who is the IT operator, whose job is to calculate the practicality of any design that the company produces. Calculations shown from advanced CAD software’s, would measure the weight, the scale of each shaped slab and the type of material. This would calculate its shelf-life in specific environments that the piece would live in. To help assemble some of the work, the software operator, Miller and paid helpers would help build the design.

Regenerate were working on a cardboard range, where the use of cardboard could be designed and infiltrated within the various interior sectors. From working with the team, Ms Wilson contributed to the design formations of Cardboard Light fixtures. As cardboard is one of Linney’s popular materials, Regenerate has designed flower-shaped and forms of nature, from reused cardboard models. The natural forms of the light fixtures achieve geometric shapes and sequences of layered plates, which create the forms of nature, using cardboard. These styles achieve, zero-waste and eco-friendly modern designs, which can be sold internally within the busines and externally. The designs aims to reach customers, which support and appreciates the wonders of reusable and recyclable materials in a fashionable and desired style. The aim of Regenerate’s project is to create and design affordable and non-harmful designs using our zero-waste policy, which promotes eco-friendly design solutions. The cardboard range: Light fixtures invites the put the business in the creative bespoke category, which also encourages an increase in our customer base and the clients we are aiming to approach too. As the company’s aim is to become self-sufficient within one year’s time, our USP (Unique Selling Point), aims to increase profit and exposure of the business from our light fixtures. By using excess materials from the brother company, it will provide a considerable profit margin for the business and an expansion of mass production. As Regenerate is a developing company, the business objective is to design towards a bigger audience, by creating more designs, collaborations and challenging the design team to invest in more ground-breaking projects that will put the business on a higher platform.

//34

Figure 39: Hexagon Pendant Light Design 1. - 2020.

As the design team also promotes other areas of our use of cardboard designs. Ms Wilson and Jack were in the midst of creating and developing a look-book, where customers from all external sectors, can invest in our design approach of interior spaces and furniture design. The light fixtures and interior spaces are an idea where we will fuse the two to make it a complimentary cardboard set piece. From the company’s light fixtures, we noticed that our flower formed versions were not as popular as our organically formed designs. The company decided to refine our sector and to create something new. From the market research that was completed, we found similar companies that had similar design purposes as Regenerate. As a business, we needed to enhance our company designs, which would translate more into our brand guidelines. Ms Wilson had created and developed some designs that the company could invest in executing. The aim of the designs was to increase the complexity of our sequences of flatbase layers, which will accentuate the form of the design for multi-purposeful lighting. The process of how the light fixtures are made, started from research on the material of cardboard, which was then followed by how the team could manipulate its form to design a product. Once concepts had been refined, 2D drawings on paper or a Illustrator format, would be scanned and sent to make a 1:10 scale model. The form of the design is refined and checked by engineers, who analyses the functionality of the 3D ob-ject. Once the design has been thoroughly estimated using CAD software, the designers can send the sin-gle slabs to the laser cutter, which will cut-out each layer to be stacked. From each layer being cut-out, they are simply glued together to form the sequence that was designed on a CAD programme. Professional pho-tographs are then uploaded onto our social media platforms for exposure and for selling purposes. Figure 40: Hexagon Pendant Light Design 1 Orientations. - 2020.
