GILES MILLER INTERNSHIP - JULY 2019

/03

GILES MILLER: 8th of July 2019

On the 8th of July 2019, I started my first day working for Giles Miller Studio. Giles Miller is a surface designer that explores organic shapes that creates transitions of light and shadows. These designs are mainly designed for surfaces such as walls, decorative spaces, and instillations. This internship was important for me as, I was inspired by Giles Miller’s presentation at the university. His work propelled me to want to focus on the art of manipulation when creating a spectacle of movement. Giles Miller’s designs were exciting to see, as the designs comes to life by embodying and enriching the essence of ‘material meets movement’. As the growth of my interest in experimentation with materials and crafting the bridge between art and design; excelled. I was honoured to work with the team and to understand their unique touch of craftmanship. I was introduced to the team and Giles Miller himself, which was an honour. As I was taken around the studio, I was informed that I would be contributing to aspects of some of the team’s role within the business. As it was my first time working in a design studio, I was not sure on what to expect. Seeing a small team was interesting, as it showcased that a design business does not need to be big for it to be successful Working with Ellie and understanding her role was interesting as she was a design consultant who would meet with potential clients and would showcase presentations, budgets, clientele requirements and what design packages clients were looking for. When she would meet with clients, I had the opportunity to focus on the branding side of the business, by designing layouts, editing pictures, company guidelines and running the social media page. As the company were recreating their brand, I was put on a task to come up with a way to make their Instagram page more noticeable. I suggested to make the Instagram posts more interactive and eye-catching, by creating Gifs. By giving new content of their design work, I had created a layout that would suit the Instagram layout and taught myself how to create Gifs on Photoshop. Creating gifs was a long process but I understood how to create different variations of speeds and transitions. Overall, learning a new skill in the process and understanding more about the ways of staying relevant and what design businesses needs to do; to bring in new business.

GILES MILLER: 9th of July 2019

On this day, I reported to William and learnt that he was one of the head designers who would create the visuals on Adobe Suite and CAD. As his role was to check that the designs are aesthetically pleasing, he collaborates with Clair who is also head CAD designer and Giles. The focus on Tuesday was working with William and collecting images for a mood board and layouts, which would be a visual guide for the other designers. Working on a project for a client that requested a design structure that the company had created before, was an interesting process. Ellie would reference a completed projected from the company and would create the same structure with the client’s desired pick of their materials and finishes. Their main basis of their design process was using Pinterest to gather inspiration of organic and biomimicry elements. They would then refine these ideas in a mood board formation, which they gave to me as their brand guideline for me to follow and use within my internship. As I was not aware of brand guidelines, I identified that they created, simple colours and alignments that matched the connotations and effect of their design work.

GILES MILLER: 10th of July 2019

Wednesday was the most exciting day of the week as I got to be more hands on a new project from a client: Olivier Leflaive. Olivier Leflaive is an Italian vineyard company that has a café where they sell their wines and foods. They were looking for a refreshing and sophisticated design element that would be designed on their bar layout. By collecting images of symmetry, vineyard lines and natural planting elements, I was able to use this as inspiration to create examples of how the pattern of the designs would look like. What I learned from William is that, to showcase the shadow and light gradient, they would use the live paint bucket tool on Illustrator to showcase visually and quickly of what the pattern should look like. This would allow Clair the head CAD director to create the pattern in CAD and to showcase how it would look like to clients when it’s done and for the engineers to construct the pieces together. As it was my first time using the live pain bucket tool, I was impressed on the versatility to create quick variations of design sequences that could be easily changed and approved. This was a great experience on being able to approach a design process where you need to test and trial out different shades of colours, patterns, and layouts.

GILES MILLER: 11th of July 2019 Giles Miller’s team hosts a presentation every Friday on new trends, processes, materials, and styles that the company could approach. Within my internship I had to create a RAD project based around my interests and design avenues that could inspire new styles for the design company. They had given me two locations to visit: The material lab and the design museum. The design museum showcased the same exhibition and was not as beneficial, but the Material lab had all sort of prototypes of different coloured resin blocks. As I found a designer called Sabine Marcelis on Instagram who creates versions of coloured blocks. I got inspired by the variation of what Material Lab showcased and I created many ideas of how Giles Miller studio could experiment with their materials and to manipulate the characteristics to create their style of design. While I was in central London, the team were working for the designer Omega and they needed to see how their products were showcased in the shops. By going to the Omega store and taking photos of their current backdrops, made me realise how their design style can suit many scales for various desired clients.

GILES MILLER: 12th of July 2019 From my findings on Thursday’s adventures, I was given feedback from my presentation and I was pleased that the team liked my presentation and that they could see that I had a real interest on experimenting with materials and wanting to express those interest in design. After the feedback, I joined downstairs to meet with Tim, who was the head technician of the studio. His job was making sure that the designs that are brainstormed and that are done on CAD, can work in real life. I got to understand in more depth on the workings of experimenting with the different adhesives that goes well with the desired materials that are mounted onto boards. He explained and showed, a coding system as a guide to create accuracy with the company’s specific pattern sequence. This helps their helpers put the tiles together internally and for other engineers from other countries to navigate where which tile is placed. The detail of the pattern are traces of the desired-shaped tiles, which also navigates as to where each tile is placed. Tim also explained a lot of jargon around using computer systems that can diagnose the weight of the material along with the pattern, how light and gravity can be a factor of the weight of the materials and also how the scale of each tile can accurately fit along the mounting board for each client. What I found interesting and beneficial about the technician role, was creating the coding system to invite accuracy and precision of the design. Seeing the detail of the coding was a design strategy that I have thought of using in my future projects. As Giles was creating his new architecture piece, I got to assist putting pieces together and to witness him testing out his design. It was exciting to work with his team and to understand how Giles went through the process of designing architectural pieces that also came to life with gradients and engineering work.

CONCLUSION OF MY EXPERIENCE AT GILES MILLER

Overall, from my experience at the Giles Miller internship, was very insightful on how a successful surface designer creating various projects. As it was my first time being a part of professional design environment, I was exposed to many opportunities to explore, learn, and evaluate the ideas to each project that I worked on. I got to understand more about how a professional design concept goes through the stages of experimentation, inspiration, and accuracy regarding taking a 2D/3D concept to a tangible object. I have learnt a lot about using computer software to implement designs and to find alternative and quick visual ways to experiment and showcase ideas of what a design would look like in a 1:1 scale. From more exposure to using the Adobe suite, I had learnt new sketch tools that I was unfamiliar with and will be able to practice and add these new sketch tools, when I’m creating and designing new projects.

JANUARY 2020 - MARCH 2020

/010

We are products and materials. We are Regenerate. Sustainable design with zero waste in mind. That’s kind of our thing. We use imaginative action to transform your assets into furniture, decorations and more – all equally sustainable and stylish. Using the materials available to us here: Wood, Paper, Metal. Make it tactile, textured, rough, wobbly, originality, chunky, with added personality. Our products are bespoke, individual.

Here we witness a template that I created for the company Regenerate.

/011

FIRST WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 14th - 16th January Week 1: 14th-16 January On the 14th of January, was my first day working at Linney. Coming into work and meeting the small team of Regenerate was very exciting and nerve-wracking. We all began to familiarise ourselves in a conference room, which was followed by a breakdown of my boss and supervisor and initially their roles. They explained that Linney is split into four different sectors, which are Evaluate, Create, Make and Activate. These sectors are what drives Linney. It was explained that Evaluate focuses on consumer insights and strategic marketing planning for the business, Create focuses on processes in regards of visual merchandise, packaging and designing solutions, Make focuses on the manufacturing processes that are cost effective and environmentally friendly and Activate, specialises in delivering the goods safely and securely efficiently.

MY ROLE

As each sector has different responsibilities. Evaluate, corresponds with the team of designers and design strategists amongst the other sectors of Linney. As explained, Regenerate was a strategical business idea, as the CEO of Linney realised that the company had a lot of excess waste from Linney.

REPURPOSE

RETRADE

RETHINK

Regenerate is a building business that approaches to support and produce sustainable outcomes from recycled or used waste and materials. The company transforms materials across the company that is repurposed into a design or a new need. Main materials that are repurposed stretches from paper, plastic, hardware, machinery and more. The outcomes of our approach build’s a positive impact to the community and to the environment. From this impact, the business donates the proceedings of our fundraisers to local causes around town. Regenerate became born with the business aim of being eco-friendly, zero-waste and sustainable. Regenerate became the developing business that was split into three segments. Repurpose: Re-sell used equipment and surplus stock to raise funds for charities and community groups, Retrade: We create unique upscale furniture, art and practical designs from industrial waste and Rethink: We advise and plan to help businesses (including our own) become more sustainable.

/012

As a junior designer for Regenerate, my role is to create, make and present new ideas that can be re-designed by using unused items. These directions can span from re-designing interior spaces, creating our own art pieces to live in hospitality sectors and creating hand-crafted products. As the aim is to make an impact, the goal of the business and my role, is to create new company alliances, an increase of popularity for the company and more avenues to design for our company partners. My day to day tasks consist of making prototypes, creating concepts for new and ongoing projects, re-trading unused items that we receive from big company names and our internal sources.

From early December to January I was asked to come up with large scaled ideas for the company’s new cardboard range sector. As the company’s main material is cardboard, I came up with the idea of the company benefiting of room dividers. Jack had liked the idea and I was given the task to display these ideas on Illustrator. My supervisor Jack asked me to create some organic shapes for their cardboard light series. This was exciting as their 1:1 prototype was very stylish. While using Illustrator, Jack and I exchanged command skills using the programme, which made me more efficient when I was getting tasks completed. From these new tips, I created variations of repetitive patterned shapes, which would showcase what my cardboard room divider concept could look like as a 1:1 prototype. As Linney is a company that specialises in printing, they print and ship GCSE papers to beneficial parties. I had been assigned to research eco-friendly bags that would replace the GCSE paper pocket envelopes. This was a good market research exercise as I had learnt, when doing a comparison, a price per unit category should always be embedded. Pricing had never been a topic that came up within my time at university and so being told of what is required for businesses, opened my mind to the importance of pricing and picking the right product from every aspect.

/013

Regenerates most successful ongoing project were their pendant cardboard lighting. As their concepts had gone through the stages of concept development via sketching and using Illustrator. I had created prototypes by hot gluing each section by a revolving sequence. This was a great way to see how simple material such as cardboard could be manipulated into making bespoke design that emitted green-friendly and zero waste attributes. As the Regenerate team had a meeting with the creative director. I understood the importance of designing a 1:1 model of a concept for a meeting. That way the leaders of the project can allocate and refine the right direction or the next appropriate move for the product. From the desired products that were shown, the conversation in the meeting led to the planning of details of modifying a product to match with the brand identity. I became more knowledgeable about perfecting brand guidelines and the importance of matching the product with the guidelines. Working in a warehouse called unit B6 would fulfil the role of the reselling section. My main role is to collect unused items, log them and take photos for a selling page. The proceeds of money would be collected to give back to the community and to fund the business so we can ensure to make new and exciting projects.

/014

SECOND WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 21st-23rd of January As the company were rebranding changes towards our new brand guidelines. I created various typefaces of our logo on Illustrator, which would reflect our requirements, which were to make our branding “REG”. “REG” guidelines are representations of thick, big, bulky, blunt, rounded accents within our design and branding terms. From the prototype that I had made that was a simple cup holder. The creative director liked this element and had decided to make that prototype; named “REG” our acting mascot for the company.

As the company were creating a lot of pendant lights. The company needed other design aspects that would showcase and enhance other attributes that the company could create. As a lot of our products had been completed, the company would sell our products internally, which would generate some profit. From this, we had decided to create some cat-scratches that we could sell online but also to customers internally that owned pets. I had identified various attributes that would excel the business, such as, sourcing our excess waste of cardboard into a profitable market, showcasing the range of designs compared to other eco-friendly businesses and creating a project that is fast pace towards manufacturing and selling our designs online. Speaking to pet owners on what they had purchased, gave us an indication of some simple designs that we could start designing and testing. Using Pinterest to visually see what other designers had created, was a great way to see what was already in the market and where our brand could become distinctive and creative, while using cardboard.

/016

THE INSPIRATION:

THE OUTCOME: I

drew some concepts that showcased the different designs that the company could come up with. I had struggled to form ideas, so I created a Pinterest board of the designs that represents “REG”. This technique inspired me on what forms I thought to incorporate within this project. I had created a series of shapes inspired by 60’s glasses. This became the authorised shape that the team would design towards. The form of 60’s styled glasses, were the characteristics curve tool, I had created a series of shapes on Illustrator that

that represented “REG”. From excelling more with the pen and would showcase the designs of our cat scratcher project.

/017

THIRD WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 28th-30th of January

As the company’s goal is to showcase the purpose of our objectives. I became knowledgeable about the importance of versatility of products, which has a common theme. As the guidelines of the company is to have thick and rounded accents. Our designs must showcase those characteristics, which has been implemented from each project I had worked on. Visual research has been a priority when identifying trends but also differentiating Regenerate to its competitors. As I had to reference a design from my visual research, this propelled the design process, which led to experiments and ongoing photography for the team to complete.

Here we witness the final product of aluminuim metal sheets printed on.

/018

As reselling is a weekly activity, I became aware of the importance of reselling to internal and external customers. From reselling products brought in from Lorielle, Boots products and Sleek Makeup. Linney workers can invest in the Regenerate business as well as external customers. This has led the increase of reputation, exposure, and more client participations to the developing business.

/019

I was introduced to an ongoing project, which focused on designing flower wall lights; made from cardboard. As I have a fascination on Japanese culture, I created a mood board of Japanese flowers and plants; to gain inspiration by its form. Using Illustrator, I designed various Japanese- inspired forms, which incorporated “REG” characteristics. Using Illustrator to create these designs, was a new experience for me as the shapes that I had created, were very life-like, which enhanced the idea of what my designs could look like in a 1:1 scale. I improved by experimenting different sequencing patterns and styles which became REG approved by Jack. It was an interesting process, but an experience where I was able to learn a new method to visually demonstrate a concept to a client, boss, or engineer.

FOURTH WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 4th-6th of February By completing light visual research on competitors of ours. I was inspired by the creativity of what big company names had produced. As Regenerate was trying to create new opportunities. I had researched the benefits of pop-up shops and how, for developing busines such as Regenerate; could gain from this. I had presented to our small team, of what a pop-up shop is about, the pros and cons and how the busines could implement this event within the business. As the brother company has many connections, Regenerate would have an opportunity to create new business alliances. The feedback of my presentation was positive, as the ideas that I had presented showcases a resolution to the company’s aims. I had planned and created a refined version, which showcased the formalities of what three examples we could design on our company grounds.

FIFTH WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 11th-13th of February On the 5th week, I became ill and could not perform my usual tasks within the week. On one of the days that I came in, I constructed a circular pendant light and experimented with the light that would go inside it. As I had a half day, I constructed this light on SolidWorks to test my skills but to also see how our cardboard light fixtures would represent our 1:1 scaled products.

/028

SIXTH WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 18th-20th of February This week, I presented my pop-up shop idea for Regenerate. The presentation showcased a visual guide of different scaled examples that I had proposed the team could design and build.

As the manager wanted to focus on how the team could implement this idea. I had proposed to refine my presentation again, which would give the team an idea of what design route we should consider. The presentation showcased different scaled environments and spaces, which would give an idea of a budgeting scheme. From doing more visual research, I understood that the more detailed and quirky traits that were executed, the more money was positioned into achieving a goal. This observation helped me to begin considering price strategies within a design. During university and at Linney, I would design without considering the cost of making the outcome. This self-project of mine became a learning tool, which enhanced my approach and reminded me to consider more factors to think of.

PRESENTATION OF FEEDBACK:BROCHURE PLAN:

From the presentation, the points, and ideas that I had made were promising, but Scott believed that we needed to ease our way into creating such an event. As Regenerate is a developing business, the next aim was to create a brochure for external partners that we would collaborate with. The brochure would be a promotional move where, we showcase other avenues of our design services; for partnered companies/affiliations. The interested parties that the company would contribute to and with, will help to generate new business and to hopefully create more exposure on a greater scale. Jack and I had explored the whole of Linney to see what waste materials the company produces and how we can showcase design trends with the resources that we would use in our designs.

/037

SEVENTH WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 25-27th of February On Tuesday, I met a new colleague, Karen who works alongside the Evaluation building but is based in the Make building. As she had an idea for Regenerate to get involved. We all went to speak to a 3D artist, who create biomimicry sculptures made from recyclable materials. The artist would be the coordinator who would run the sessions for our workers. As Regenerate is a developing company, we strategized a way for the workers to take part in an activity, which would help Regenerate to gain more eco-friendly design ideas from the rest of the Linney team. As I observed the spaces of the exhibition, the environment that I was in, gave me the opportunity to understand what an appropriate space would look like.

/038

As the company needed to create more projects, Jack and I worked on a clock concept, which would not tell the time in the conventional way of normal clocks. From using our recycled resources, Jack made use of our thrown-away aluminium metal sheets. Jack had displayed a mood board of what other designers had created with our aim of a clock design. The images showcase diversity and originality, but there was no “REG” like features. This project was very difficult for me, as I struggled to come up with concepts of not reading the time in a conventional way. From having a source of cut-out rings from prototyping, I decided to create some models, which would help land an idea.

/039

EIGHTH WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 3rd-5th of March

Continuing on, I had learned more about the metal sheets and its property, and this had refined and adapted the original concepts that I did. I benefited from working in a 3D medium than 2D medium, as this style helped me to understand how the design of the clock would mechanically work. The process became quicker and more efficient for me when experimenting, especially as I understood how each layer of the metal sheets would operate. As the metal sheets are thin, each sheet would be layered on top of each other creating a formation of where different scaled rings of the design would move simultaneously. From making various arrangements of prototypes, I had made a design on Illustrator to show clearer details of the design. Showing these design ideas to Jack, led to further development and a final design, which was approved and sent to an engineer to be cut-out and crafted together.

NINTH WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 10th-12th of March Regenerate had designed a merchandise-product of a book, which was to give to contributing parties and companies. As the book: The power of 1; has a strong cover design, I was asked to create an easel, which would simply hold the book. From creating a mood board on cardboard easel designs, the results were not aesthetically effective as the book gave off. From investigating other sources of designs that has been invented to primarily: hold an object or to grab something from a supportive system; became my source of inspiration.

/043

As I created some sketch work ideas, I had asked some questions on what I could create that would determine how the user would interact with the book. As the book is very striking and inviting, I felt that the design of the easel, should complement the design of the book. I went through many concepts of drawing easel designs, which demonstrated users picking up the book from different angles and directions, adjusting how the user would grab or take the book and how the design of the easel, could highlight the characteristics of the book. Unfortunately, Jack had stated that he wanted a simple design of a conventional easel design. I found inspiration from researching traditional cardboard easels and experimented with shapes, curves, and height.

/044

2nd variation of 1st concept.

From creating different variations of designs, I began to understand how a normal easel works, I decided to create an easel design on Illustrator and add REG like features to the design.

/045

From understanding how a normal easel design works, I decided to add some rounded edges around corners that would create a pointy edge and to also play with some offcuts.

/046

The back of the cut-out makes the design of the easel looks interesting and inviting to the eye. Jack and I both liked this concept and that we both planned to continue experi-menting this.

Here I experimented to see if these cut-outs would look aesthetically innovative or not. The negative space, highlights the rounded curves and the form of the whole body of the easel.

On Monday the 16th of March, I got a phone call from my employer Scott, that the company is trying to reduce the threat of exposure to any employee within the business. As I travel from London to Nottingham weekly, I would be one of the employees that could affect others. From Tuesday the 17th, I would officially be working from home in London and would still be working for the company until the end of my placement.

/047

TENTH WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 17th-19th of March

Communal seating designs:

Due to COVID-19, I was instructed to work from home based in London. As the team were separated, we communicated on our online group’s teams message board throughout COVID. As I could not continue to create any practical work from last week. I was instructed to think of new products that the company could create for the cardboard range. As I noticed that Jack had made a cardboard seat, I decided to create a mood board showcasing the variations of REG like characteristics of cardboard designed seating. I was amazed of what cardboard could do when creating innovate designs. I had decided to create some light sketches that would showcase moreso the form of the furniture than the style.

As the team could not work in the warehouse to restock and sell unused items. We had previously packed and sorted fit-wear and needed to upload it onto the Facebook Regenerate page. I had to create and edit all images of the items that we needed to sell on Photoshop. As I do not use Photoshop often, it was good practice for me.

/048

Cardboard seating designs:

The images represented designed cardboard seating, which was analysed for inspiration. I had chosen examples where it showcased attributes that would represent Regenerate. This had inspired me to mix my drawing concepts of the communal seating with singular seating and to challenge myself if I could create both a communal seating area that could become singular.

ELEVENTH WEEK OF LINNEY: REGENERATE 24-27th of March

GreyPants Designs: Due to limited staff working from home and on-going projects being placed on pause. I was instructed to create some designs for the cardboard lighting range. As I had progressed from teaching myself on SolidWorks, I became confident and created more designs of cardboard pendant lights. From having my own independent spin of creativity, I became more confident in my drawings and my CAD skills, which propelled me to challenge myself to create designs that reaches a design aesthetic. For example, GreyPants is Regenerate’s biggest competitor, as their craft reaches a spectrum of innovation and sleekness.

This was exciting, because I understood more about SolidWorks and began to understand the importance of detail when designing. I found that showcasing an idea from a 2D perspective is completely different as apposed to a 3D perspective. After showcasing new designs to the team members, I was told that all employees had been furloughed and that I could not do any work for the business. I was instructed to think of potential ideas and dissertation questions for my final year and to keep learning and practicing my skills.

CONCLUSION

Overall, my experience at Linney has taught me how to be a designer that cannot only design but to have confidence in what your designing and what your trying to achieve. At Regenerate, I have experienced new tips and tricks which has built up my 2D software skills but also the exchange of business knowledge, experience, and perspective. I have identified the comparison from the business and competitors of Regenerate, that less is more, and that design is a process of stages that can be represented in many ways. From my experience, I’ve had the tendency to develop my design thinking strategies, which has evolved into market research, brand identity, brand-purpose, exposure of business and design trends. All these elements have shown me the importance of what a design business needs to achieve before any design work can be set and completed. From comparing Giles Miller, Linney & Regenerate, I’ve identified that by exposing a business that revolves around design, can lead to new business-design ideas, which is beneficial towards creating products and making the business more exposed to other interested parties.
