CO-LIVING RESEARCH Co-living is a modern form of shared housing with smaller private spaces in exchange for lower rents, more convenience, larger shared spaces, and a sense of community. To be truly knowledgeable of co-living, some of the aspects of the practice that needs to be understood, are the implications of the individual, the environment, economy, and the fundamental of co-living. The people who tends to co-live are the ones who have moved out of home or who has everything upon themselves, meaning that they have all the responsibility. The beneficial aspects of co-living are, that it cuts down urban sprawl, forms new community, cures urban loneliness, has cheaper price, and the carpool. On the other hand, there are some challenges people go through in co-living, which are the lack of privacy, thefts, lack of autonomy, and conflicting lifestyles in the community, such as habits, messiness, waking hours and poor hygiene. These challenges lead on to some design issues for future co-living spaces. The 3 main aspects are the liveability, sustainability, and the affordability. Overall, co-living gives people the new centres of social and economic activities, allows for ones to learn new skill from communal programs, and enables the nomadic life.

SPATIAL ANALYSIS / REQUIREMENTS COMMUNAL: As there are many communal facilities needed in the community, the communal areas take up the biggest areas of the building. All communal areas are placed on the ground floor, to set clear boundaries of private and communal space. SEMI-PRIVATE: The semi-private spaces takes up the least amount of space, as there are facilities mainly provided for the single elderly, young people. It is also efficient in circulation. People who have their private areas on up stairs, can use these semi-private areas that are on the ground floor. PRIVATE: The private areas for the elderly people are on the ground floor, as they might have difficulties walking up and down. The private areas for 4-5 people are also on the ground floor, as there are many people. The rest of the private areas are all on the first floor. The first floor would be reasonably more quite than the ground floor, as there are no communal space.

PRIVACY AND PUBLICITY Provides a sense of privacy by having individual 2. dwellings for each generational family. However with the removal of boundaries, we aren’t isolating the families from each-other. From the possible removal of fencing, creating communal spaces and the sharing of different facilities, the people of our community will be able to enjoy the sense of togetherness.

OWNERSHIP AND SHARING Residents in our community have the ownership depending on the rent they pay and members sharing the equal ownership of the house, and each member would pay extra for all the stuff that are shared such as, microwaves and washing machines.

TOGETHERNESS AND SENSE OF COMMUNITY

SOCIAL PROGRAMS

For togetherness and the sense of community in our community, we can have social programs that will allow everyone to gather and socialise. There can be a seperate building that includes common rooms, study rooms, entertainment rooms and etc, for people to do activities together.

For entertainment, the community can have programs such as, yoga, going on a trip, having a party, cooking classes, and more. Any programs that uses the kitchen, garden, living area, study area, childcare room are all welcome.

FEASIBILITY AND SOURCES OF FUNDING

SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES

Funding provided by the community, each individual home is owned by the families, whilst the communal facilities owned by the community as a whole.

People living in our community share the responsibility of cleaning the public areas, such as the study areas and the laundry rooms. People can take turns on cooking weekly special meals. They can open up a piece of their own land and farming together. Internet can be shared within the community, and take turns on service check-ups monthly.

SITE SELECTION AND ANALYSIS

Location: 9 Markeri St, Mermaid Be

Climate: 28.0459°S, 153.4351°E, 0m AMSL Size: approximately 7280msq

Neighbour: individual houses, a building for aged care service, an apartment, accountant biulding, a convenience store, and a park. Views: Houses, Park, Beach/River The main objective characteristics for the site is that it is quiet, as the surrounding buildings and the park is covering the main busy roads. The park gives a sense of freeness and greenery, therefore would not make the building feel trapped. If people go up to the rooftop, they can also enjoy the view of the river on the western side and the beach on the eastern side. These views that gives a sense of freeness will enhance the community’s lifestyle. 16

The carpark is a shared carpark between the community and the visitors to the park. The carpark can enhance the community’s lifestyle, as there are communal transports, as well as caraprk spaces for people who have their own car. The childcare is provided for the families who might have kids. As they could be loud, the workspace is located one the other side of the building. For the community to gather and communicate, there are entertainment rooms that would either be for watching movies together or, playing games.

PRIVATE FACILITIES + bedrooms

1 to 2 18 bedrooms

3 to 4 11 bedrooms

5 or more 2 bedrooms

On the ground level, there are 8 bedrooms for 1 to 2 people, 5 bedrooms for 3 to 4 people and 1 for 5 or more people. This is for the elderly people, as they it could be hard for them to go up and down the levels. The rest of the bedrooms are on the second level, more focused on for younger people.

DESIGN STRATEGY The overall form of the conceptual design from Stage 1 work had to be changed as the site selected was a L shape with the shared carpark in the corner. By changing the form, the building was able to fit perfectly in the chosen site, as well as being similar with the surrounding buildings. The circulation was kept as an unending circulation, but the stage 1 design was a round, inside circulation, where as for this final design, it is a geometric shaped circulation that includes both from outside and inside.
