WELCOME Letter from the editor

Aloha! 2018 blessed me with a new degree, new experiences, more friends and family within the Hawaii bridal industry community and a whole new adventure for Hawaii Wedding Style. Taking this new direction has been a busy, yet exciting journey for us! Formerly known as “Hawaii Bride & Groom Wedding Style,” we chose to rebrand to become more inclusive and to be more than a bridal magazine. We want to be the wedding planning resource for our islands. In an effort to make wedding planning in Hawaii easier for both destination and local wedding couples while still enhancing the awareness of Hawaii as a premiere wedding destination, we are now working with the Hawaii Tourism Association. Working with HTA and partnering with travel agents worldwide, will help showcase the sophistication and unique talent of Hawaii bridal specialists. Determining if a business was a right fit through typical advertisements was a little difficult, so we decided to step out of our comfort zone. Choosing to feature advertorials that include a questionnaire and biography will help ease this planning process and put a face to the business. Now, through a click of a downloadable link, our travel partners will be able to share Hawaii Wedding Style magazine with their wedding couples.

H OW TO CO NTACT ME E MA I L keyah@hawaiibride.com

In each issue, we strategize to come up with the next big wedding trends through our editorials. In this issue, enjoy the view from Makiki Heights Manor and experience an elegant, modern glam tabletop with a vibrant purple orchid floating arrangement and a chic three-tiered multi-textured cake. Then, travel to the east side of Oahu and embrace the ocean front view and experience an oceanic rustic take at the Windward Waterfront Garden. Take a look at the unique personalized details in our “Real Life Weddings” and get inspired for your own wedding. Make sure to look at the bottom of the “Real Life Wedding” page and highlight the vendor that helped create that specific look you that absolutely loved! Being the editor of a bridal magazine has been an amazing experience so far! As I am still in the shoes of a bride-to-be, it is my pleasure to share parts of my own vision for my wedding and to share all of the beauty Hawaii has to offer. To those that do live on the islands, we know that Hawaii is more than just an ordinary wedding destination. Hawaii is where wedding dreams come true and Hawaii Wedding Style is here to help make that dream a reality. Cheers to new beginnings!

Oahu "The Gathering Place" Oahu is home to Hawaii’s capital city of Honolulu. The island of Oahu offers a contrasting cultural experience between a modernized, city lifestyle in downtown Honolulu, to a more relaxed, surfer-town vibe on the North Shore. Compare this relaxed culture to the residents of Waikiki and you see why Waikiki is known as “the Waikiki strip.” Waikiki is a blend of both locals and tourists, in which creates that “aloha” spirit and experience. When the sun closes its eyes and sinks over the horizon, those who call the south shore home, come out to play. Similar to “the Las Vegas strip,” “the Waikiki strip” never sleeps. Taking the country roads of Haleiwa back into town, you can physically find yourself transitioning back into modernity. No town on Oahu is the same. Each has its own character, shaping the community and its culture to match. The heart of the island of Oahu, is its cultural diversity.

Location: Kaka'ako.

While 53 By The Sea’s iconic grand staircase is the subject of many an Instagram post, few have had the pleasure of seeing what lies beyond on the restaurant’s second floor. Two wedding chapels along with various sized private banquet rooms set the scene for an unforgettable day with unparalleled views and exceptional service.

View: The iconic Waikiki beach and the best view of Diamond Head in Honolulu.

The two wedding chapels were inspired by the two halves of the classic Hawaiian love story of Naupaka and Kau`i. Oversized windows perfectly frame sweeping views of Diamond Head and the iconic Waikiki Beach while this indoor venue keeps you cool and dry, no matter the weather.

What inspired you to start your business? I was inspired to start my own business after seeing that there was hardly any wedding resources or services when I got married many years ago. I did not hire a planner, as I wish I did because I was my own planner.

What do you enjoy most about your job? What I enjoy about my job is interacting with my couple and working on their plans with them. As I was told, my personality is my forte and that I bring good energy to an event, and when couples are happy, we are happy!

What are your awards, accomplishments, or features? I am proud to say that we’ve adjusted to be most current with our planning tools and our busy brides and grooms really appreciate it.

As a coordinator, what is a “must have” wedding detail that you make sure is perfect for every wedding couple on their big day? Ensuring that their attire looks fabulous! After all, everyone will be taking pictures of them throughout the entire day!

One of our weddings was featured in a national magazine, as well as on occasion, in 2 very popular local magazines. What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? There are so many wedding styles that we love and it is hard to say what is our favorite. For bouquets, we love when a bouquet is created to be free flowing and expressive, and not too structured.

What is the best tip that you can give a wedding couple the day of the wedding? No matter how stressful a wedding can be, we advise the couple to focus on the experience.

What is the best tip that you can give a wedding couple the day of the wedding? Hire a wedding coordinator — an experienced one! What do you enjoy most about your job? We love the JOY that we experience weddings. Even after shooting weddings for over a decade, we are always touched by the most precious moments: a father beating cancer and walking his daughter down the aisle, a family heirloom being passed down, a surprise audio recording of a grandmother who couldn’t be there, families reconnecting after being away for decades, every heartfelt vow. We love celebrating with you and capturing it in a way that you will cherish forever.

Mrs. Hawaii 2018! This has brought much attention, exposure and success to our business. What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? What I love about the trends of 2019 is how it is encircling the past into the present. Clean, Timeless and Classic Beauty. While matte was in for a long season, this years luminous and all over glow is the way to go; and Messy hair but we do care. “Messy in a controlled way that stays all day is the look we are after.” What do you enjoy most about your job? I love that it’s not a job! Our team is fluid in its purpose; we all agree that making a women or young girl feel confident in her skin is so essential to her health and wellbeing of who she is and all that she is destined for. Another aspect that brings us great delight is meeting women of all walks of life, hearing their stories and staying connected even after our “job” is done. Many of our Brides are now our girlfriends!

CA K E WO R KS What inspired you to start your business? Being lucky to work alongside some of the world’s most renowned chefs and award winning establishments I felt confident to become a business owner to empower other women to pursue their passion. What are your awards, accomplishments, or features? In London, I received a Diplome Superior from L’ecole de Cuisine Francaise de Sabine de Mirbeck and a City and Guilds Diploma in Advanced Pastry from Westminster College; a selective training program for working pastry chefs. I started my career with an apprenticeship at London’s distinguished Four Seasons Hotel. Then went to work in Lyon, France creating desserts for the Restaurant Les EauxVives at the four-star Hotel Metropole de Lyon. Former pastry chef for the awardwinning Honolulu Coffee Company. As pastry chef at Chef Alan Wong’s flagship restaurant in Honolulu, where I created beautiful signature desserts that remain among the most popular menu items. While at Alan Wong’s, I had the

pleasure of working alongside such acclaimed culinary masters as Chef Thomas Keller (The French Laundry and Per Se), Chef Nancy Silverton (Campanile and La Brea Bakery) and Chef Stephen Durfee (CIA Chef Instructor and former executive pastry chef of The French Laundry), as well as at prestigious food festivals and special events nationwide. What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? The simplicity of a rustic themed wedding has to be one of my favorites at the moment. It shows that weddings don’t have to be glamorous and expensive.

What inspired you to start your business? The desire to become wedding planners came from inspiration in helping our siblings, cousins, and friends plan their weddings. We really enjoy being involved in the entire process; from finding vendors that match our client's styles to sharing ideas on Pinterest, and in just being involved on the wedding day to keep our bride and groom smiling and feeling relaxed. Our team works together, and we all have a collective goal to help couples create their special day and enjoy it with their family and friends. What is the best tip that you can give a wedding couple the day of the wedding? Before taking that first step down the aisle, close your eyes, take a few seconds to breathe slowly and take it all in. Savor this beautiful moment, which is the beginning of your new life together. Everything always works out in the end, and sometimes it works out even better than you thought.

What are your awards, accomplishments, or features? We have received hundreds of 5-star reviews, and people love us on Yelp. We’ve won the Knot Hall of Fame and Best of Weddings consistently for nine years now, from 2011, and we’ve also won the Wedding Wire Bride’s Choice awards every year from 2012 to present. What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? All the vibrant colors and prints we are seeing! Not just with floral arrangements, but also with the bridesmaid dresses, table settings, and reception decor. Pastels and muted colors will always be a classic choice. What do you enjoy most about your job? We love seeing the smiles and laughter from the couple and their guests. Also knowing that the vendors are working together as a team. Seeing everyone collaborating to make the day extra-special is a great feeling.

DAV E M I YA M OTO & C O. What inspired you to start your business? I was inspired to start my business by asking myself what could I do for a living until I get super old, and still allow myself the flexibility to do whatever I want ? My uncle Masao Miyamoto was the official photographer for University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1936 to 1991, and he would often talk to me about his photography career. What inspired you to start your business? When my husband and I got married in 2014, most of my budget went into the décor. I wanted to have that WOW factor when everyone came in to the room. But everything was so expensive! I was a DIY bride, so we made all our centerpieces and favors. get to be a part of someone's best day ever. I consider it a gift to be able to bear witness to their journey, assist them in realizing their dreams and make memories that they will cherish always.

What are your awards, accomplishments, or features? The accomplishment I feel the most proud of is that we have built our business on repeat customers and referrals. The greatest compliment that we could ever receive is to be recommended to someone's loved ones. We have a 5 star rating on Yelp and are so grateful to our clients for leaving us amazing reviews!

What is a wedding must have? As an officiant, I always try to make sure that the ceremony accurately reflects the couple's personalities. So much effort is put into the reception, that oftentimes, choosing the right officiant becomes a last priority. I want my couples to laugh and cry and reflect and savor each moment of uniting their lives together.

What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? I'm a huge fan of going organic. Hand written vows, living centerpieces, farm to table cuisine, and dancing the night away under the stars. I love a trend that focuses on keeping things natural and unpretentious.

What is the best tip that you can give a wedding couple the day of the wedding? Take 5 minutes to spend just with your new spouse. The day will be filled with family, friends, photographers, and coordinators rushing you around and encouraging you to eat, breathe, drink water. Save a few moments to stop, be grateful and enjoy the person who just gave their life to you.

What do you enjoy most about your job? The part I love most about my job is that I

.What do you enjoy most about your job? I love meeting people! Seeing the additions of new trends and traditions helps keep things fresh. I also love hearing their wedding vows… I remember being afraid to say my own wedding vows because of a huge fear of public speaking. So we ended up doing “regular” vows we received from the officiant... Hearing today’s vows inspires me to renew ours; maybe on our 20th anniversary. What type of gear do you use the day of the wedding? I use Canon 5D Mark 4 cameras and different prime lenses. What is a wedding must have? The sunset photo. What inspired you to start your business? Photography for me originally started out as a hobby taking photos of my family and friends. They were mostly candids, but I still love those photos to this day. As cheesy as it is, seeing how photos really capture a special moment in time sparked so much pride and joy! It's this joy that really radiates from every couple on a wedding day that inspires me to document weddings! I want everyone to look back on their photos and beam with joy, laugh so hard, and love that they have those moments forever. What are your awards, accomplishments, or features? I am grateful to have received the Knot's 2019 Best of Wedding's award after many wonderful reviews from couples on the Knot's platform. In addition to being featured in local wedding magazines and national online wedding platforms such as Wedding Chicks and Zola! What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? details recently! With little details from favors, pictures of their pets as the tables numbers, and speeches and toasts during the reception, even all the way to the bride's dress being made by family members or close friends. It's the details that the couple makes personal to them from their lives that makes the overall feel of the wedding more intimate and fun! What do you enjoy most about your job? The best part of my job is the people. From the couple themselves, to their friends and family, and the other amazing vendors I get to work with. Wedding days are the best days to witness love and happiness with no limits from everyone, and that's pretty amazing to me. What type of gear do you use the day of the wedding? Typically I bring more gear than necessary: Canon 5d Mark III's (3), 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100 or 135mm, 24-105mm, 70-200mm. Over-packing for a wedding day just ensures that if anything goes wrong technically, I'm prepared.

What inspired you to start your business? In 1945, Ernest Watanabe, a soldier stationed in Brisbane, Australia, passed the time growing flowers outside his barracks. Missing his fiancé, Shizue, led him to think of all the romances that would need to be rekindled at the war’s end. Upon returning from the war, Ernest, alongside his parents and new wife, began growing roses as “Watanabe Roses” and selling these beautiful blooms to returning soldiers and their loved ones.

What do you enjoy most about your job? We enjoy being given the opportunity to beautify one of the most important days to a married couple. Flowers are an integral part of the wedding’s aesthetics – from the hair flowers to the wedding arch, and will inevitably show up in the wedding pictures. We gain a lot of satisfaction knowing that we helped enhance the beauty of each and every wedding. What is a wedding must have? Flowers should be at their biggest possible bloom – we always ensure that our flowers are bloomed out and not tight (in a bud) so that their full beauty is captured in the pictures. What is the best tip that you can give a wedding couple the day of the wedding? Always try to keep your blooms in a cool, dry place until they are ready to be used. This will ensure that they stay fresh longer and not wilt before the important parts of the day take place.

Unscripted moments are happening throughout the event there is an out pouring of emotion at a wedding – a more photojournalistic is required to capture these special moments. The event is beautifully decorated to the tee – requires me to capture details with a creative eye. Connecting with the bride and groom to be able to capture them together naturally. So much going on and so much to capture requires I have many skills and an understanding of human nature/emotion, fashion, lighting, posing, etc. What are your awards, accomplishments, or features? I have been in business for 16 years and the most rewarding part of my job is when couples I have photographed years ago come back to Maui and want to do a shoot to celebrate, anniversaries, new additions to the family, vow renewals or family reunions.

It gives me great joy to capture these special events in peoples lives. What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? Every couple is different and has different taste. I love a well executed design weather its boho chic, modern or a combo of different styles. I do have a love affair with ghost chairs I think they are so cool! And grey, really digging on the color grey. What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy capturing life moments for my clients. What is a wedding must have? Gorgeous pictures of the Bride when she is finished getting ready before heading to the ceremony next capturing beautiful pictures of the Bride and Groom after they are married. What is the best tip that you can give a wedding couple the day of the wedding? Be present and enjoy every moment, it flies by!

S A S H A P R INC E P H OTO G R A PHY What inspired you to start your business? I just love photography and storytelling. Coming from an art background, starting a wedding photography business felt like a natural progression. I’m inspired to give couples a truthful representation of their wedding day. What are your awards, accomplishments, or features? I’ve won a few first place portrait photography awards from the Lahaina Art Society. What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? I don’t follow trends so much, but I would love to see more live bands at weddings.

What type of gear do you use the day of the wedding? Mostly Nikon digital and some film. What is a wedding must have? I don’t believe wedding details are “must have” shots. Through the lens of my camera, I try to capture how a wedding feels and the essence of the day. What is the best tip that you can give a wedding couple the day of the wedding? Take a moment to “pause” and spend time alone with each other. Also, spend quality time with friends and loved ones that may have traveled far to be with you.

PHOTOGRAPHY Sasha Prince was born and raised in Hawaii, where she developed a love for art and culture at an early age. After attending art/photography school on the mainland, she returned to Maui where she has found her niche in wedding photography and portraiture. Sasha’s deep appreciation for fine art photography and portraiture are evident in her wedding photography where her focus is capturing the essence of the wedding day. "I shoot the wedding day as it happens naturally, giving couples space to be themselves". Sasha’s spirit and creativity resonate in her photography, lending an artistic touch to the way she tells stories with her photographs. Based on Maui. Will travel to all islands.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy the excitement of a wedding day. When I come away with meaningful photos, it feeds my soul.

What inspired you to start your business? My life long love with photography comes from my childhood. When I unexpectedly lost my father at the age of three, I grew up getting to know him through boxes of photographs that he took while he was alive. It was his way of being able to tell me the stories of his life. Because of the relationship I had with these photographs, I became obsessed with cameras and photography, and the ability to tell the stories of people’s personal legacies – small and big. It continues to be my life long mission to help tell stories and capture memories for generations to come.

What recent wedding trend is currently your favorite? First looks! It’s not ideal for all couples, but having private moments for the bride and groom to enjoy each other is always a special memory that a lot of my couples look back on.

What are your awards, accomplishments, or features? With over 10 years of experience with wedding photography, my work has been recognized by local and international magazines. One of the highlights was capturing the celebrity destination wedding for Audrina Patridge and Corey Bohan, which got published in US Weekly and went viral.

What is the best tip that you can give a wedding couple the day of the wedding? This life we have is a such a gift. Have fun, don’t be afraid to laugh when things feel awkward, enjoy the unexpected quiet moments, honor your emotions, and don’t let a moment escape you without soaking it all in for yourself. There’s always a hidden gift waiting for you in each moment.

What do you enjoy most about your job? The privilege of someone’s invitation and trust to capture special memories is always a huge honor for me, but working with people who love each other and share their joy and laughter with you is one of the biggest gifts I go home with.

Envision yourself sitting only a couple hundred of feet back from the site of lava-flow in a boat, witnessing the synergy between fire and water, as they breathe life into one another. The island of Hawaii is the only island in the Hawaiian chain with an active volcano, Kilauea. The island boasts a whimsical variety of climates, landscapes, and atmospheres. The island of Hawaii is also home to two other famous mountains— Maunakea, which is the world’s highest sea mountain with a snow-frosted tip; and Maunaloa, the world’s most colossal mountain. The island is home to the breathtaking Hamakua coast and the valley of Hilo, with greenery and waterfalls that stretch on for miles, the famous Punaluu black sand beach, and also the Historic Kailua Village. Kauai "The Garden Isle" The island of Kauai, is the oldest and most northern isle and sits majestically draped in her emerald lusciousness. Her tears take the form of heaving waterfalls, and we find her smile in the fragrant flowers that we tuck behind our ears. Known as the “Garden Isle,” the island of Kauai surely lives up to the name. The air on Kauai is more than breathable, with the trade winds trading secrets with the trees that stand proudly at the feet of Mt. Waialeale. This uninhabited region is a deafening reminiscence of Hawaii’s natural beauty — untouchable, unforgettable, and simply Kauai. The latter serves as a reflective mirror for the people, culture, and atmosphere. Even for locals living on the other islands, Kauai is a destination of choice because it is an inimitable escape, a reason to hold your breath, and a reminder of what exists outside of daily routines.
