My story My name is Nadiya. I’m from Kazakhstan and studied English in London in July 2013. Why did I go there? That’s a strange question with an obvious answer – if you want to learn a language well the best idea is study it in the country where it is spoken. I’m a very sociable person, but even if you are a little shy you will not be able to ignore the activities that the A2Z School organises, such as the game party, cinema evenings and tea parties. Sometimes you can also go somewhere on a group tour, which is very exciting and useful for your language skills. In my opinion, if you come to study English you should do your best to speak, speak and speak in English and don’t speak with someone in your own language. That’s why during my stay in London I lived with a host family. During my stay here I spoke my own language for just a few hours – great! We did a lot of fun things: One day we had classes in a museum. We visited Thorpe park amusement park which was one of my most exciting days in UK. We also went to the Bath. It is a small town and one of the most beautiful cities in the UK, it reminded me of Venice. During my weekends I also visited some clubs in London and had a lot fun there. My daily routine was to go to school, come home around 9pm (because of all the things that I used to do after my classes) then have dinner, check my homework and do some revision of the lessons I learned that day. Finally, I would go to bed and rest to recover my energy for new adventures the next day. I’d like to say that while in London I had such a great time! I met a lot of nice, friendly and cool people. I made some really good friends. I will really miss my vacation in London. And I’m sure I will come back here. Now I experienced it myself, I can tell you with certainty that studying in A2Z London is highly recommended!

Our teachers and classes

Meet our teachers QUESTION: What makes a great school? ANSWER: Great Teachers! An English school is only as good as the teaching staff and at A2Z we make sure we have the very best teachers to help you to learn English. Our teachers are from England, America, Australia and many other English speaking countries and have exceptional spoken English. They are all experienced teachers with the relevant qualifications to help you get the most out of your time in the UK and Ireland. A lot of our teachers have also lived and taught English overseas, so they know what it feels like to be thousands of kilometres from home and have to make new friends and a new life.

DIANE I have been teaching for 46 years including the UK and Jamaica. I enjoy all aspects of the English language including drama, history and literature. I have visited 30 different countries including the USA, China and Australia. I am a big Bruce Springsteen fan!

HAYLEY I have been teaching English for nearly 2 years. I taught in South Korea for over a year - a great experience! I love teaching English because I enjoy having students from all around the world in the classroom. I learn so much about cultures and traditions. It’s very interesting! I have been lucky enough to travel a lot; I have been to Asia, Europe, and Australia. My greatest experience to date is climbing Mount Fiji in Japan. It was amazing!

10

JAMES I’ve been teaching English on and off for several years in Poland, Taiwan and Japan, all ages of students. I enjoy teaching English because I get to meet people from all over the world (both students and colleagues) and because I love seeing progress in students’ ability to express themselves in a foreign language; students are also very entertaining! I travelled around the world after university and my favourite places were, and still are, New Zealand and Japan. I love reading, watching art-house movies and photography.

MICHAEL I have been teaching English since July 2013. I enjoy teaching because I have a passion for the English language and became interested in teaching during my previous job as a Teaching Assistant in a high school. My recent travel experience has been an 800 mile inter-railing trip from Athens to Vienna, including Budapest and Zagreb. I also recently went to Munich, which was beautiful in the snow. My favourite hobby is going to gigs and festivals, and I recently went to Glastonbury where I saw the Rolling Stones.

RACHEL I’ve now been teaching English for about 2 or 3 years including 1 year teaching in France. I’ve travelled a lot around Europe and I love visiting new countries and learning about different cultures. I always wanted to teach English and studied teaching for 4 years at university. I love the English language and I love having the opportunity to help people get to where they want to be in life. I’m a Christian, so I spend a lot of free time getting involved with my church. I also like to hang out with my friends and go to new places.

General English The A2Z Method

How the A2Z Method works The teacher asks a question speaking very quickly just like a native speaker and then repeats the question to be sure students understand.

The A2Z Method is so successful because every student is involved all of the time. Each lesson is structured as though it is an informal test of listening, speaking, grammar and sentence construction. This way, whenever a mistake is made, your teacher will correct you instantly,

The teacher chooses a student to answer the question.

The teacher then helps the student to answer the question and will correct pronunciation, grammar and any other mistakes.

so there is no opportunity to pick up bad speaking habits.

Exam English Cambridge English: First (FCE) The FCE is an examination awarded by Cambridge University ESOL. It is an examination of General English and is very well known across the world. In fact in England it is the most widely recognised General English certificate. It is the ideal course for students who want to achieve a well known certificate in English to allow them to progress to higher levels of learning or to boost career prospects. During lessons, our teacher will prepare students for all parts of the examination and help to identify specific weaknesses for students to focus on. We use previous exam papers to systematically improve scores in each of the five sections of the exam and have full practice tests every four weeks so students are thoroughly prepared.

Key Facts: • The FCE is valid for life, unlike an IELTS certificate or TOEIC/TOEFL test report. • Paper based tests take place three times a year, in March, June and December, but computer based tests can be taken at other times.

Students who complete the course can go on to take academic university courses and will be perfectly comfortable communicating almost fluently in English in a wide range of situations.

About London Our London school is in Wimbledon, only minutes away from the world famous All England Lawn Tennis Club and a short tube ride to central London. In 1777, Samuel Johnson, the man who wrote the very first Dictionary of English Language wrote about London:

“...when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” And that is still true today. London is one of the busiest and coolest cities in the world. It is an exciting mix of historic and modern architecture, traditional and new cultures, busy streets full of people and huge open parks. Whatever you want to eat, you will be able to buy it in London and whatever music you want to listen to, you will find a venue that plays it. For an incredible and intense life experience then London is the city for you!

Key facts: • London was a Roman town established in 43AD • More than eight million people live in Greater London • London has 43 universities and 400,000 students • There are five airports in London, including Heathrow, the largest in the United Kingdom • There are hundreds of galleries, museums and theatres to choose from • London is the most popular travel destination in Europe

Wimbledon is the best place to learn English in London. One reason is that there are many nearby homestays so you should spend less time travelling to school than if you study in central London. We’re here to help

Your accommodation Making our students feel happy, comfortable and settled is a big part of what we do at A2Z. We offer three kinds of accommodation and our dedicated Accommodation Manager will help you to find the perfect place to live so you can relax and enjoy your experience.

MOST HOM ACCOMMO ESTAY DATION IS LESS

T AN 45 MINUTEH S FROM THE SCHO OL

Homestay Most of our students choose to stay in an English speaking home. This is a fantastic way to start your experience as you will be treated as a member of the family. You will be able to spend time with your host family, including your evening meal, helping you to understand their culture and giving you plenty of opportunity to speak English. A lot of our families have hosted students for many years and will be happy to answer questions about the local area. All homestays are inspected regularly to ensure they meet our high standards. All homestay accommodation includes a private single room, bedding, laundry facilities and internet access. Most homestay accommodation is less than 45 minutes from the school by public transport. We offer two kinds of homestay - standard and customised. Standard homestay includes breakfast and evening meal every day and lunch at weekends. Customised homestay means that you have a special request, like special food or closer proximity to the school, and if this is available we will charge extra to arrange this.

36

“A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE

Student residences Choosing to live in a shared student residence is a very social way to enjoy your time away from home. You will live with other students so will get lots of opportunity to socialise and practise speaking English. We offer two kinds of residence - budget and premium. Our premium residences are more expensive and have private or ensuite bathrooms, guaranteed internet and a higher standard of decoration. Our budget residences are cheaper and include shared rooms and bathrooms. Internet is not guaranteed. You will have to do your own cooking but for students who want to make the most of the Great British nightlife a student residence is a great place to live!

Hotels and hostels We can also arrange for you to stay in a hotel or hostel. Hotels and hostels are good for short stays, but are quite expensive when compared with homestay or our student residences. However, you might not socialise as much and might speak English less than in a homestay.

Student Support Making you feel welcome and helping you to settle in quickly when you arrive is all part of the A2Z service. Our reception team are all former students so they know everything there is to know about the difficulties you might face when starting life in a new school and a new city. Between them they also speak ten languages and are always available to help with practical issues: • Opening a bank account • Finding a doctor or dentist • Using public transport • Finding a place to worship • And much more

For any problems the reception team cannot help with, each school has a dedicated manager. You can make an appointment to see them any time at their weekly help sessions.

Visas

For students starting lessons on Monday you will be invited to our weekly welcome session. Here you can meet other new students, learn about the school, the teachers and our support services. A copy of our Student Handbook will also be available to help you with any other questions you might have.

Students from outside the European economic area often need to apply for a visa before they travel to the UK or Ireland. Because our schools have accreditations we are able to support your application for a visa if you enrol on a course. Ireland has different rules to the UK, but in general the process is as follows: • Enrol on a course with A2Z and pay your tuition fees

Arriving

• A2Z will send you confirmation documents

You have booked your course, accommodation and flight. Don’t forget to book a transfer from the airport! We can help you to arrange a private transfer taxi or give advice or information about public transport. Visit www.a2z-english.com/meet-and-greet

• Apply to the UK or Irish Embassy for your visa

38

• Use these documents, together with other evidence to complete your visa application

This is only a very general guide and you should visit our website www.a2z-english.com/visas for more detailed information.
