 The Private Healthcare Facilities And

Services Act 1998 came into effect from 1st May 2006.  The purpose is to regulate all private

healthcare facilities and services and it replaced the Private Hospitals Act 1971.  It was legislated as a result of an

unprecedented growth of private hospitals from the mid 1980’s

 The legislation was necessary because of

unethical practices in the management of some of these private healthcare facilities, questionable hospital charges and bills, emergency services denied due to economic reasons, medical errors and negligence in private hospitals.
