We understand the incredibly hard times the entire world has been having to deal with during the past two years plus. We have received a large number of requests from potential applicants asking for an extension of the deadline to send their applications to participate in the 6th Hong Kong International Piano Competition. We think it is only fair to extend the deadline to send applications to everybody who might be interested to participate. So, we are pleased to announce that the new deadline for applications is now the 20th May 2022. The Members of the Jury in charge of the Preselection have agreed to work hard to process all applications received and be able to announce the list of Quarter-finalists by the 15th June 2022. We hope then to continue with the schedule as originally announced. We have one more important announcement: As you are all aware of, different countries have been and are adopting different policies to fend off the COVID pandemic. It is a fact that Hong Kong is going through the worst face of the pandemic as we talk. The anti-COVID policy which has been adopted means that the movement of people in and out of Hong Kong is greatly impaired, Trying to put everybody involved in the best possible situation in this time of the pandemic, we have decided to hold the Semi-finals and Finals of the Competition in Austria (Vienna or nearby) and streamed live, in real-time and point to point to the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, thanks to a partnership established with mdw-University of Music and Performing Arts – Vienna. We will be using state-of-the-art technology in streaming which will be a game-changer when it comes to putting into practice the presentation of an event in two places as far apart as Vienna and Hong Kong, at the same time. We expect such a high quality of streaming that the three local Members of the Jury are going to be judging the performances from their usual seats at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, while the other eight Members of the Jury will be judging the performances in Vienna, being in continuous communication between the two parts and the organizers. The Rules and Regulations of the Competition will remain unchanged and as published in our site. We are not only establishing a cultural bubble but also a technology bubble that we hope will make Hong Kong and Vienna proud of. More details will be posted in due course. We look forward to sharing with all of you this exciting development in the presentation of a Competition / Festival.

The Hong Kong Joy of Music Festival 香港美樂聚 10th - 27th October 2022 - SEMI FINALS & FINALS LIVE at the Esterhazy Palace, Eisenstadt, Austria STREAMED LIVE, in real time and point to point at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall
An Introduction to The Hong Kong International Piano Competition Music is for many the ultimate form of human communication as it transcends time and language. Musicians are, therefore, par excellence communicators and their success relies completely on being able to say something and touch people with their music-making. The word “competition” and “music” may not intuitively go together as art and aesthetic pleasures are not meant to evolve in an environment of pressure. But this approach would perhaps miss out an important element inherent to all public performances of art. Whether an artist is able to communicate successfully is ultimately decided only by the audiences. The process of reaching out to an audience is long and arduous in terms of the hard work involved in learning and practicing and in the need to master the fine art of performing in public to various audiences and in various venues all over the world. It is at this juncture where a music competition can act as a form of “aesthetic filter” and give a head-start to aspiring, and mostly young, musicians by affording them a platform to perform in front of a knowledgeable jury, members of which would probably have already gone through similar processes earlier on in their careers, as well as of an audience, since the competition will be open to the public. In our efforts to make the Competition an event which will be emphasizing its music making aspect rather than its competitive edge which, by definition cannot be avoided, we have been introducing a number of changes on which we would like to reflect for a while along the next paragraphs and in the overall context of the competition. The Organizing Committee of the Hong Kong International Piano Competition (from now on referred to as The Committee) is inviting Pianists from all over the world, whose dates of birth are on or later than the 1st January 1992, to apply to participate in the 6th Hong Kong International Piano Competition, (HKIPC).
3
WHO CAN APPLY Pianists from all over the world whose dates of birth are on or later than the 1st January 1992. Students of Members of the Jury ARE allowed to participate in the competition. When the time comes to vote, Jury Members whose students are participating in the competition will abstain from voting for his/her students. To achieve a fair treatment of all participants, each time it comes to cast a vote, the score received by each one of the participants will be divided by the number of votes contributing to achieve that score for each stage. Applicants must list all teachers they have studied or are studying with, specifying the form of studies undertaken with each of them, duration of studies, etc. Failing to do so might result in disqualification of candidates at any stage of the competition.
HOW TO APPLY Applicants will need to send: a) A duly completed APPLICATION FORM supplied with this brochure. b) Along with their application form, applicants are requested to participate in a PRELIMINARY AUDITION by sending a digital video recording (in any standard format) of their performance, minimum 40 minutes long, which must include pieces selected, (and as directed), in the list accompanying the application form and marked as: PRELIMINARY AUDITION. HOW WILL IT ALL CONTINUE … IT IS AT THIS POINT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMPETITION THAT WE WILL MAKE HONG KONG / EISENSTADT (AUSTRIA), THE STAGES IN WHICH A COMPLETELY NEW WAY OF CONCEIVING AND PUTTING INTO THE SCENE A MUSIC COMPETITION IS GOING TO TAKE PLACE … THE CONCEPT: The 15 Semi-finalists will be invited to come to Vienna/Eisenstadt (Austria), to perform a full recital each (Part I – Intermission – Part II), of a total maximum duration of 105 minutes, including an intermission of 15 minutes. The recital will be of a completely free repertoire, chosen by each one of the artists from published, commercially available scores, which will be performed in front of an audience composed of the general public and which will include seven of the Members of the Jury, in Eisenstadt. The performances will be streamed live, in real-time, and point to point at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall to be seen by the general public and which will include the three local Members of the Jury. After seven and a half days during which the recitals of the 15 semi-finalists will take place, the 10 members of the Jury will vote to decide on the 6 Finalists who will go on to take part in the 3rd Round: Chamber Music and Concertos, of the Competition.
7
ROUND II Semi-finals The 15 Semi-finalists selected in the way we have described in the above paragraphs, will be offered a contract to come to perform in Vienna. The terms of the contract will be:
8
•
The Artists will be refunded the cost of their return economy class tickets to travel to Vienna from their place of abode.
•
They will be provided Hotel Accommodation with a buffet breakfast included while in Vienna and while under the terms of the contract.
•
They will be given a per diem allowance as well as being provided with practicing facilities and intra city transportation as needed between the hotel, practicing venue and the performance venue.
•
The 9 semi finalists who will not go on to the Finals, will receive a Performing Fee of USD 500 each.
•
The 15 Semi-finalists will literally come to Vienna to perform a full recital each (Part I – Intermission – Part II), of a total maximum duration of 105 minutes, to include an intermission of 15 minutes. The recital will be of a completely free repertoire, chosen by each one of the artists from published, commercially available scores, which will be performed in front of an audience composed by the general public and which will include the Members of the Jury.
•
There will be two recitals per day, starting at: 10:00 and 14:00 VIENNA TIME 16:00 and 20:00 HONG KONG TIME respectively, on the following days: Mon. 10th Oct., Tue. 11th Oct., Wed. 12th Oct., Thu. 13th Oct., Fri. 14th Oct., Sat. 15th Oct., Sun. 16th Oct. On Mon. 17th Oct. there will be only one recital at 16:00, following which there will be a Jury Deliberation and announcement of 6 FINALISTS who will be taking part in Round III – Finals of the Competition (consisting of two parts: chamber music and a concerto)
•
The announcement will be then immediately posted in the notice board of the competition at the Hong Kong City Hall, at the Vienna venue and in our official website: www.chopinsocietyhk.org A meeting will be separately held by the Organizing Committee with the ARTISTS to give them the results of the voting by the Members of the Jury and take care of all management issues relating to 9 of the Artists going back home and organizing the remaining 6 Artists’ (Finalists) rehearsals and performances schedules with the Logos Chamber Group and with the official Orchestra of the Competition.
•
With this re-structuring of the way we are conceiving the Competition, we eliminate the wall-to-wall music exercise for the Jury, which has been preoccupying us since the inception of our competition, format which we feel is counter-productive to be imposed onto any artistic presentation, never mind when it is one that involves “comparing” different performances. We aim then at presenting 15 top class artists in Vienna and streamed live, in real time and point to point to Hong Kong from which the Jury will select the 6 Finalists who will then go on to the Finals consisting of two parts: Chamber Music and Concertos.
•
On Tue. 18th and Wed. 19th Oct., there will be performances part of The Joy of Music Festival 2022, which will be running in tandem with the Competition. Artist(s) and Programmes will be announced in due course.
