It was just over a year ago that the pandemic brought about such uncertainty in all of our lives. Yet, as I reflect back, I’m awestruck at the resiliency, courage, and confidence of so many—from frontline workers to everyday folks—who joined together to get us to where we are today. That roster of heroes includes people across our great nation, more than 55 million of whom are AAA Members, over 6 million of them right here in our club. As you all continued to adapt to these unprecedented circumstances, so did AAA. We found ways to improve our services and created new ones to better serve you. For instance, with everyone spending more time online, we reasoned that a higher level of online security would be an excellent benefit for Members. So, we delivered our latest service, AAA Identity Champion (AAA.com/identitychampion), to provide an essential level of online protection against identity threats. It’s free with your Membership; to be covered, all you need to do is enroll. Enhanced protection packages designed to help you safely navigate today’s digital world are also available. Speaking of safety, AAA now offers both professionally installed home security solutions and DIY kits (with the guidance of a “virtual pro”) from AAA Smart Home (AAA.com/smarthome). Members can save an average of 15 percent on home monitoring. We continue to deliver peace of mind through our superb roadside assistance (America’s most recommended), as well as the confidence and protection that comes with our suite of insurance products (auto, home, life, specialty, and even pet). And don’t forget: You can enjoy substantial savings if you bundle multiple policies with AAA. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention further improvements we’ve made as we digitally transform many of our services. They include delivering engaging online content through an enhanced suite of e-newsletters and website articles. We’ve also introduced new paperless billing services, allowing you to handle your annual Membership renewals online. Learn more by visiting your account at AAA.com. There’s lots happening here at AAA, all of it geared toward providing more value to you. As we optimistically move along, with all the hope and promise that come with the new year, I want to again personally thank you for remaining a loyal AAA Member. Please continue to stay safe as we look forward to brighter days ahead. ba.

COMMUNITY
As adviser to the AAA School Safety Patrol at Martin Elementary in South San Francisco, Deborah Carlino trains and organizes 30 students to help their peers get to school safely. One day not long ago, her team used what they’d learned to protect an older member of the community. After a driver pulled into the dropoff zone in front of the school, his wife stepped from the car and toward the sidewalk. She stumbled on the curb, fell, and hit her head on the ground. Carlino’s patrollers mobilized immediately. Some formed a protective circle around the woman. Others diverted traffic so emergency personnel would have easier access when they arrived. When adults suggested moving the woman to make her more comfortable, patrollers reminded them that moving a victim can exacerbate injuries—and she stayed put. Paramedics soon arrived and transported the woman to the hospital. That incident, for which Carlino’s team was awarded a Lifesaving Medal from AAA, is just one example of how important the AAA School Safety Patrol program continues to be a century after its founding. The program was born in 1920, the brainchild of Charles M. Hayes, president of the Chicago Motor Club. Like many early automotive groups, that club—which became a chapter of AAA—was primarily a forum for driving enthusiasts. But it took on a more
8
serious mission after Hayes witnessed a speeding car fatally strike several children in a school crossing. Horrified, he began advocating for programs that would help students get to and from school safely, training cadres of young patrollers who would encourage others to be safe pedestrians. His efforts eventually became the AAA School Safety Patrol. Today, it’s the largest school-based safety program in the world, with more than 679,000 patrollers in 35,000 schools across 30 countries, including the United States. At street crossings near schools, the students help others
cross safely while an adult crossing guard deals with vehicles. The AAA School Safety Patrol program turned 100 last year, but the celebration was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. AAA continues to get the word out about the patrols with the support of volunteers like teacher Deborah Carlino, who is now the national spokesperson.

n the history of timepieces, few moments are more important than the creation of the world’s first Piezo timepiece. First released to the public in 1969, the watch turned the entire industry on its head, ushering in a new era of timekeeping. It’s this legacy that we’re honoring with the Timemaster Watch, available only through Stauer at a price only we can offer. Prior to Piezo watches, gravity-driven Swiss watches were the standard bearer of precision timekeeping. But all that changed when the first commercially available Piezo watch came onto the market. The result of ten years of research and development by some of the world’s top engineers, they discovered that when you squeeze a certain type of crystal, it generates a tiny electric current. And, if you pass electricity through the crystal, it vibrates at a precise frequency–exactly 32,768 times each second. When it came on the market, the Piezo watch was the most dependable timepiece available, accurate to 0.2 seconds per day. Today, it’s still considered a spectacular advance in electrical engineering. “[Piezo timepieces]...it would shake the Swiss watch industry to its very foundations.” —Foundation For Economic Education With the Timemaster we’ve set one of the world’s most important mechanical advances inside a decidedly masculine case. A handsome prodigy in rich leather and goldfinished stainless steel. The simplicity of the watch’s case belies an ornately detailed dial, which reflects the prestige of this timepiece. Call today to secure your own marvel of timekeeping history. Because we work directly with our own craftsman we’re able to offer the Timemaster at a fraction of the price that many Piezo watches cost. But a watch like this doesn’t come along every day. Call today before time runs out and they’re gone. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Spend some time with this engineering masterpiece for one month. If you’re not convinced you got excellence for less, simply send it back within 30 days for a refund of the item price. But we’re betting this timekeeping pioneer is a keeper.

Springcleaning for your car
A neat and tidy vehicle can help make your time on the road more pleasant. Just like your home, your vehicle is probably due for a deep cleaning after the winter months. The effort you put into this, as well as weekly touch-ups and keeping your vehicle organized, can help ease the stress of long car rides or weekend errands for the rest of the year.
The fundamentals
The trunk or cargo area
Cleaning the exterior of your vehicle can be as easy as driving through a car wash, but the interior often gets neglected. Begin deep cleaning by dusting the air vents with a small brush and removing gunk from all the crevices of the console with a cloth wrapped around a butter knife. Wipe hard surfaces—console, dash, door panels—with all-purpose cleaner and a rag. Vacuum the upholstery and clean leather with a specialized kit and a soft cloth. Wash the windows, including the sunroof, with glass cleaner. Finally, vacuum and shampoo the floor liners and carpet, making sure to move the seats to clean beneath them. (You may find some lost treasures!)
Organize this large space by investing in a collapsible bin that has two or three separate compartments. One compartment will hold safety items: jumper cables, a flashlight, bungee cords, a multipurpose tool, a blanket, and a tire pressure gauge. The next can hold a first-aid kit, water bottles, and sports equipment such as balls and shoes. Save the third space for groceries and other household purchases.
The console Arrange console necessities such as tissues, sanitizing wipes, napkins, sunglasses, notepads, pens, and loose change by stashing each in a separate color-coded zipper pouch. Cell phone mounts fit in cup holders or attach to a vent or the dashboard.

Sacred Stone of the Southwest is on the Brink of Extinction

C
enturies ago, Persians, Tibetans and Mayans considered turquoise a gemstone of the heavens, believing the striking blue stones were sacred pieces of sky. Today, the rarest and most valuable turquoise is found in the American Southwest–– but the future of the blue beauty is unclear. On a recent trip to Tucson, we spoke with fourth generation turquoise traders who explained that less than five percent of turquoise mined worldwide can be set into jewelry and only about twenty mines in the Southwest supply gem-quality turquoise. Once a thriving industry, many Southwest mines have run dry and are now closed. We found a limited supply of turquoise from Arizona and snatched it up for our Sedona Turquoise C. Collection. Inspired by the work of those ancient craftsmen and designed to showcase the exceptional blue stone, each stabilized vibrant cabochon features a unique, oneof-a-kind matrix surrounded in Bali metalwork. You could drop over $1,200 on a turquoise pendant, or you could secure 26 carats of genuine Arizona turquoise for just $99. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. If you aren’t completely happy with your purchase, send it back within 30 days for a complete refund of the item price. The supply of Arizona turquoise is limited, don’t miss your chance to own the Southwest’s brilliant blue treasure. Call today! Jewelry Specifications: • Arizona turquoise • Silver-finished settings

MONEY
Are you really covered?
Ask your agent about these common insurance gaps. One day, when meeting friends for a meal, Josh Garrett of Oakland, Calif., left his backpack in his Volvo SUV. When he returned, he discovered that someone had broken a window and taken the backpack, which contained a couple of laptops and accessories. Video from the restaurant’s security camera showed masked thieves in the act. “They hit five cars in 10 or 15 seconds,” he says. Garrett got a second surprise when he filed an insurance claim and learned that his auto policy covered only the window’s repair. After he filled out a police report and supplied an inventory of the stolen goods, his renters policy helped replace the tech gear. But he had to pay the deductible on each policy. Many first-time theft victims learn the hard way that their auto insurance doesn’t protect belongings swiped from their cars. And that’s just one kind of coverage gap that might catch you unawares. Here are some of the most common. The best way to avoid them? Talk to your agent.
14
Automotive
Homeowners
Hit-and-run incidents. If your vehicle gets hit by a driver who then flees the scene, your uninsured motorist coverage may not pay for repairs if the culprit isn’t found. If you have collision coverage, your insurance will pay to fix your car, but you may be responsible for the deductible.
Natural (and unnatural) hazards. Standard homeowners insurance does not cover damage caused by floods and earthquakes. For those, you will likely need a separate policy. Standard insurance also usually excludes damage caused by war, nuclear hazards, mold, termites, rats, neglect, drain backups, tidal waves, and water seepage. (“Insurance typically covers water falling down but not coming up,” says AAA agent Michelle Chatwin of Clearfield, Utah.)
Depreciation. New cars begin to lose value as soon as they leave the lot. If your vehicle is stolen or totaled, insurance will cover only its depreciated value, which could be less than what you owe the dealer or lender. One solution: gap insurance, which pays all or most of the difference. Rental cars. If you rent a car in the United States, whatever coverage you have on your own vehicle usually extends to your rental. But if you wreck the loaner, some rental car companies will charge you for the time the vehicle is in the shop, and insurance generally doesn’t cover those fees. Read the fine print in your insurance, rental car, and credit card documents to see if you need additional coverage. OEM parts. Most policies allow repair shops to fix damaged cars with aftermarket parts made by third parties, rather than those produced by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Many insurers allow such parts, says Las Vegas AAA agent Jack Jacobs, “but they can devalue your vehicle.” Consider buying an endorsement to your auto policy that will guarantee the use of OEM parts; some leases require it.
Maintenance. Insurance covers damage caused by fire, wind, and hail, but it does not normally pay for damage that results from wear and tear. So if rain leaks through an aging roof, your policy might cover water damage in the house but not the cost of fixing the roof; if hail damaged the roof, that damage could be covered. Sewer lines. Homeowners policies don’t usually cover the portion of the sewer line that runs from your home to the street; that stretch is most often your responsibility. Some companies offer policies that cover those costs; check with your city as well as your agent. — k at h l e e n p e n d e r

identity theft Fraud committed in your name can cost you time and money. Here’s how to avoid becoming a victim, plus tips for recovering if you do.
When Alexis Moore looked at her credit report as a matter of routine, she discovered a strange entry: a satellite TV service with an overdue balance of about $250. Moore, who wasn’t a customer of the company, figured it was simply a mistake. “I thought I could take care of it myself,” the Northern California–based attorney says. Turns out, someone had stolen her identity and racked up months of charges. “I reported it to the police and the Federal Trade Commission—all the things they say you’re supposed to do,” Moore explains. Despite her efforts, she says, a “firestorm of nonsense” erupted, one that took two years and a legal battle to extinguish. The thief was never apprehended. More than 650,000 people in the United States reported incidents of identity theft to the FTC in 2019. The actual number of victims is probably much higher, because these crimes take many forms and get reported inconsistently. Javelin Strategy by c h r i s to p h e r n u l l A A A | VIA

Steve Weisman, a law professor at Bentley University and author of the book Identity Theft Alert, warns that identity theft increased in 2020, a trend he attributes to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Phony websites are luring people into providing their personal information or unwittingly downloading malware [malicious software] that will steal information.” Warren adds that the United States saw a rash of fraudulent attacks related to federal government stimulus checks last year.
» Knowing the consequences
ecognizing identity theft »R Identity theft is defined as illicitly using someone else’s personal information for financial gain or any other benefit. The most prevalent example is credit card fraud, in which the thief opens an account under an assumed name. Related crimes include getting a phone, renting an apartment, taking out a bank loan, or applying for a driver’s license with a stolen identity. The FTC tracks seven broad categories of identity theft, nearly all of which are on the rise. The ways criminals approach stealing someone’s identity vary just as widely. They might “skim” credit or debit cards by attaching a device to a legit card reader that captures and transmits account numbers and PINs. They may request a Social Security number under false pretenses in the form of a “phishing” email or phone call. They may pilfer personal information from documents taken from mailboxes and trash or recycling bins. These are but a few examples. The variety of identity theft scams seems boundless, says Jessica Warren, manager of fraud awareness, education, and outreach for Western Union. “There are romance scams, giveaway scams, even inheritance scams,” she says. “It’s something that can happen to anyone.” 20
» Protecting your identity As with other aspects of your personal and financial life, exercising care and diligence will help you protect yourself from identity theft. Keep passwords, credit card numbers, and other information private to reduce your vulnerability. Shred paperwork before you recycle it. Regularly monitor your account activity. Discovering problems quickly decreases their

& Research, a financial advisory firm, estimates last year’s total monetary losses nationwide due to identity fraud at $16.9 billion. Experts predict the losses will continue to grow. To protect yourself, it’s important to understand the basics about identity theft, the possible consequences of becoming a victim, and the ways you can minimize your risks.
Because identity theft takes so many forms, the impact of an attack can range from inconsequential to life-changing. Fraudulent credit card purchases that the real cardholder discovers and reports quickly to the financial institution typically result in little or no damage to the victim; your liability tops out at $50. It’s more complicated with debit cards: Federal law limits your liability to $500 if you report an attack within 60 days; if you don’t, your liability is unlimited and you can lose all the money in your account, Weisman notes. That said, as Alexis Moore’s story shows, identity theft can have a severe and lasting impact. Scammers who open new accounts, borrow money, or even buy property in your name can cost you money and damage your credit long-term. The consequences of identity theft can go beyond financial problems too. Your stolen ID could be handed to police by the actual perpetrator of a crime, claiming to be you and opening you up to a wrongful criminal prosecution, says Gabe Turner, chief editor of Security.org. In one burgeoning type of identity fraud, scammers use a victim’s health insurance to get treatment or prescription drugs under the victim’s name. This could lead to medical bills and, if controlled substances are involved, criminal liability until the matter is resolved.

impact on victims and expedites recovery, says Victor Lamond, operations manager for AAA Identity Champion. “We live in a fast-moving digital world, so the faster we can detect an instance of identity theft and take action, the better we will be at reducing risks to our finances, privacy, and reputation.” You can practice good digital hygiene by using strong passwords and two-factor authentication on your accounts, filtering out spam, being wary of attachments, installing software that regularly checks your computer for viruses and malicious code, and avoiding sharing details (such as your mother’s maiden name) on your social media accounts, which you should always set to private. It’s possible to monitor for fraudulent activity using two free tools: credit reports and notifications from financial institutions. Annualcreditreport.com, a federally mandated service, gives consumers access to a copy of their credit report from each of the major reporting agencies— Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—once a year. These reports summarize all accounts open in your name, including payment history and other details. Your primary task when reviewing them is to make sure everything is accurate. If you find an error, open a dispute. (Pro tip: Rather than requesting all three reports at the same time, get a different one every four months, which improves your odds of
catching any fraudulent activity early.) SIGN UP FOR Meanwhile, set up email MONITORING or text notifications for activity related to your debit cards, credit cards, and bank accounts. This is the fastest AAA Members now way to uncover any wrongdoget free identity ing. These alerts, which can be protection with AAA set up through each provider’s Identity Champion, and 30% off paid website, are highly configuplans with code rable. For instance, you could VIA30. Learn more be notified immediately if your at AAA.com/idcvia. debit card is used outside the United States, or if a transaction exceeds a certain threshold (whatever dollar amount you choose). To ratchet up your protection, you can opt into an identity-theft protection service (such as Identity Champion from AAA). These services, sold as subscriptions, keep tabs on your credit report and alert you to fishy changes. Some plans offer recovery assistance when personal information has been compromised, as well as insurance coverage that may cover financial losses related to identity theft.
» Recovering from an attack If, despite all your precautions, your identity is stolen, the best thing to do is take action right away. Call your bank and credit card providers, change potentially compromised passwords, and consider putting a fraud alert on your credit report. In more severe cases, you’ll need to take additional steps. The FTC outlines best practices online at identitytheft.gov. Steps include freezing your credit (asking each of the three major agencies to stop issuing new credit in your name until you decide otherwise) for extra security and reporting the crime to the FTC and local law enforcement. Much of this can be done online, and you’ll want a paper trail if your case ends up in court, as Moore’s did. Resolving an identity theft can take time and persistence, but failing to address it head-on can result in bigger problems. “There is no shame in looking after yourself,” Moore says. “If you see something wrong, don’t wait. Get help immediately.” ● christopher null is a veteran technology journalist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. A A A | VIA

ll that sheltering in place— and staring at the same walls while working, studying, and playing at home—is prompting folks to spruce up their digs. In 2020, Americans spent nearly $440 billion on home improvement products, an 11 percent increase over the year before. As it turns out, even the least handy people among us are capable of doing some routine maintenance. Although the tasks may sound daunting at first, many minor repairs are relatively easy, and the supplies you’ll need can often be had for less than $25 at hardware stores. Here’s a roundup of fixes and updates that almost anyone with a basic tool kit (and perhaps a peek at YouTube) can handle. Yes, even you. A A A | VIA

You do not need to call a plumber to stop that torturous drip-drip sound. It’s normal for a faucet’s seals and washers to degrade over time. To replace them, shut off the water, using the stopcock under the sink or the valve on your home’s water meter, then run the tap for a minute or two to empty the pipes. Remove the faucet, taking notes or smartphone pictures along the way to make reassembly easier. Replace the worn-out washers and seals with new ones—or use plumber’s tape to reseal—and tighten any loose connectors. Not sure what size or type to buy? Take the old parts to the hardware store and pick out comparable replacements.
Does your commode sound like a babbling brook long after you flush? You want to tackle this problem quickly: A running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day. (If you can’t repair it right away, shut off the tank’s water supply by closing the valve near its base.) The solution may be as straightforward as swapping out a worn part, such as the rubber flapper inside the tank. Press on the flapper; if the water stops draining, this is the problem. To replace the flapper, unhook it from the flush lever. Hook the new flapper’s chain to the lever, and place the flapper so that it covers the flush valve, as before. Not the issue? Try adjusting the flush mechanism, untangling or loosening the chain, clearing the fill tube of any blockage, and ensuring the float’s hinge has not rusted and is operating freely.
Fix a leaky faucet.

Stop a running toilet.
Relight a pilot light.
4.
In older homes, water and wall heaters, furnaces, fireplaces, and stoves may run on gas. The little flames in their pilot lights—which ignite the gas when you turn on your appliances—aren’t supposed to go out, but sometimes they do. You can relight them yourself. Turn off the appliance and wait a couple of minutes for any lingering gas to dissipate. (If you continue to smell gas, do not proceed; there may be a leak. Evacuate and call your gas provider immediately.) Find the pilot light. Turn its valve to the pilot position, or open the valve by pushing the reset button, if your appliance is equipped with one. Use a lighter or a long match to revive the extinguished flame. After the flame is relit, continue holding down the button to keep the valve open for about 30 seconds, then let go.
You may be surprised to learn how easy it is to fix a small hole, crack, or ding. Start by picking up a wallrepair patch kit that contains a mesh adhesive patch, a tub of spackling paste, a putty knife, a sponge, and sandpaper. Next, cover the floor to protect it. Place the mesh over the wall damage, eliminating ridges or air bubbles and cutting away any loose strings. Use the putty knife to apply a flat, thin coat of spackling paste to hold the mesh in place. Smooth its texture with a damp sponge, or wait until the area dries, then sand it to the desired finish. If you can still see a dent after the mixture dries—which could take up to a day—add another coat of spackling paste. Paint the repaired spot to match the rest of the wall.
Patch up drywall.

Clean a dryer vent. A clogged dryer vent pipe, or duct, is a fire hazard, so you want to perform this very manageable task at least once a year. First, buy a dryer vent cleaning kit. Its brush should attach to a household drill, which speeds up the job, but you can also wield it manually. After brushing the flexible or rigid tube, vacuum up any lint that may have fallen down it. “Remember to clear the back of the dryer as well,” says Matthew Preble, field operations lead for AAA House Manager. “If it’s been years since it was last cleaned, [the vent] may be too clogged to clear completely. In that case, the entire hose should be replaced.”
6.
Recaulk a bathtub. Caulking—the stuff that creates a watertight seal between the tub and the wall—isn’t meant to last much longer than five years, especially if your bathroom is particularly humid. You can redo it in a weekend. Cover the drain with a rag, spray on some caulk remover, and use a thin knife or razor blade to carefully scrape off the old caulking, which you can put in the trash. Clean the newly exposed area with bleach or vinegar, then place painter’s
tape in straight lines to delineate where the caulking should go. Choose a waterproof latex mixture. Use a caulking gun to apply it evenly along the tub’s edges and corners. Run your finger or an edging tool over the soft caulk, pressing it in. Peel off the painter’s tape while the caulking is still wet, and let it cure for at least a day before exposing it to any water.
7.
Replace air filters. The air filters in your home’s climate-control system should be changed at least four times a year, or twice if you have a whole-house filter. (Yes, you read that correctly.) If you’ve fallen behind schedule, don’t fret: Replacing air filters is a simple task. First, locate the return vent, which is usually on an indoor wall or ceiling. Loosen the bolt using its little levers, or a coin or a screwdriver, and open the vent. Take out the dirty filter and snap in a new one of the same size, then close the vent. Why change filters so often? To catch the tiny particles—mold spores, pet dander, pollen grains—that diminish indoor air quality and force your climatecontrol machinery to work harder. Routinely changing filters will make your system last longer and can save you up to 15 percent on your energy bills too.

Install a security camera. The ability to monitor your property remotely can give you peace of mind. Choose a spot near entry doors, windows, stairs, a porch, or the driveway and mount the camera with a drill or a screwdriver. A video doorbell is another option: Note whether your existing doorbell is wired to a mechanical chime; if it isn’t, you may need an adapter. Next, run a Wi-Fi speed test at the doorstep to confirm
30
that your network has the required upload and download capabilities. Check to see whether there’s any glare or obstacle blocking the field of view, and make adjustments as needed. See something fishy going on? “A modern home security system should have an accompanying app that lets you call for help on your smartphone,” says Gulbin Hoeberechts, senior vice president of marketing and sales for AAA Smart Home.

Perfectly placed artwork and photos can help personalize your space. For best results, you’ll need a sharp pencil, a hammer, a measuring tape, and nails (or picture hangers or adhesive hooks). If your piece is heavy, use a stud finder to locate a sturdy place. With the pencil, mark a spot 57 inches above the floor or about six to eight inches above furniture. Hammer in your nail and hang your piece by its center wire. No center wire? Fasten one to the back of the frame. Keep safety top of mind: Never hang anything heavy or glass-covered over a bed or a couch, and apply museum putty to a frame’s bottom corners to help prevent the glass from shattering during an earthquake.

Paint a room.
MONKEY BUSINESS IMAGES / SHUTTERSTOCK
Once you’ve patched the dings or holes in the walls (see No. 4), perhaps you’ll opt to change their color. This is a fairly straightforward task, if you have the proper tools: brushes, rollers, trays, painter’s tape, a drop cloth, and a ladder. Select your shade—bring home swatches from the store or enlist an interior designer or a color consultant to help you decide. Protect your floor, then pour the paint into a tray and start applying it at the walls’ edges and corners, using an angled brush for precision. After that, switch to rollers and cover the rest of the walls, making even, up-and-down strokes for uniform results. Apply as many coats as needed to achieve the tone you’re after—and don’t let anyone touch the wall until the paint dries.

The cardinal rule is to “test smoke alarms once a month, replace their batteries each year, and replace the smoke detectors themselves every decade,” Hoeberechts says. Using a sturdy stepladder and a power drill, install new or replacement detectors on ceilings or high on walls—smoke rises, after all—and at least 10 feet from major appliances, to prevent false alarms. Mount one in every sleeping area. A smart sensor that detects smoke and carbon monoxide can be a good option, Hoeberechts says. “It’s also good to have a fire extinguisher, learn to use it, and practice a fire safety plan with the whole family,” she adds. 34

Unclog a shower drain. When hair binds with soap, the mixture can build up and prevent water from passing through pipes. To unclog a shower drain, remove the metal cover—if it’s bolted down, you’ll need a screwdriver—and reach in to clear the blockage. Can’t reach the gunk? Try using a plunger, lining its rim with petroleum jelly for a tighter seal. Place the plunger over the drain and push down on the handle repeatedly. When you lift the plunger, the backed-up water should start to subside. No dice? Other ways to unclog a drain abound, including the wire hanger, boiling water, and vinegar-and-bakingsoda methods.
“Do a little research before replacing your thermostat,” Hoeberechts advises. “Take a look at your existing wiring and check for compatibility [with the type of heating and cooling system that’s in your home]. Compare prices, wattage, and features.” Once you’ve picked a winner, turn off the electricity to your old thermostat, then use a screwdriver to detach it from the wall. Label where each of the wires goes before disconnecting them and taping them out of the way. Mount the new thermostat’s base, rethread the wires, and insert batteries if needed. Restore the electricity and program your new thermostat. Befuddled by all the options? Consider a Google Nest or a similar device. “A smart thermostat can help you save energy and money,” Hoeberechts says. One distributor estimates that a smart thermostat can reduce the average home’s energy bills by 25 percent.
14.
Unstick a door. “A door that sticks can be a sign of a few different issues,” Preble says. Seasonal temperature changes, loose hardware, and shifts in the home’s foundation can all affect alignment. Whatever the cause, he recommends
addressing the hinges first: Remove any paint or spacers underneath, fill the frame holes with wood glue or epoxy, and replace the screws. The strike plate— opposite the doorknob, where the bolt goes into the jamb—may need tightening too. If that doesn’t solve the problem, identify which part of the door is sticking. Remove the door, sand down that spot, touch up the paint, and reattach the door. Is the door squeaking? Apply WD-40 to its hinges.
15.
Deal with a balky lock. Beyond being annoying, a stubborn door lock poses a security risk. Grab a screwdriver and tighten the hinge and strike plate screws to get the door properly aligned. If that doesn’t get the lock to open and close properly, take the knob apart and lubricate the spring mechanism, the keyhole, and even the key. “For a stuck lock, we’d normally recommend [two lubricants]: WD-40 and powdered graphite,” Preble says. It could also be time to replace the doorknob and lock. “In the spirit of making a home smarter,” he says, “we’d also suggest a smart lock. Installation is fairly straightforward, but our house managers can put them in as well.”

Reseal a wooden deck. How can you tell if a deck needs attention? Sprinkle water on its boards. If the drops bead up, all is well. If they soak in, it’s time to reseal—but wait until
the rainy season subsides. Clear away furniture and other items. Sweep away leaves and debris, then apply oxygen bleach and oxalic acid cleaners. Strip off any wood stain that’s easily removed. (A power washer can speed this up.) To retain the deck’s color, opt for a clear sealer; otherwise, choose a hue
that complements your home’s exterior. With a paint roller, apply a thin coat; keep a paintbrush handy to even things out. Let the sealer dry before using the deck again. ●

top: Offer advice to a new driver in a calm, clear manner to keep everyone stress-free on the road. bottom: Make education a top priority when your teen begins driving.
Preparing your teen
When teenagers take the wheel, parents should stress safety—especially the need to avoid the three most common factors in deadly crashes for young drivers: distraction, speeding, and not buckling up. Here are four ways to do that:
38
Monitor late bloomers. A growing
number of teens are waiting a few years before getting their licenses, which means they skip state-imposed graduated licensing requirements based on age. But all new drivers need limits and oversight. An 18- or 19-year-old with a full license but little experience on the road can benefit from supervised, restricted driving.
Practice to perfection. Make sure your teen has many chances to drive in different situations—including on highways and busy streets, at night and during the day, in wet and dry weather—with you alongside to calmly offer advice and support.

Getting a driver’s license is one of the most exciting events in a teenager’s life. For parents of those teens, it’s one of the scariest. New drivers 16 to 17 years old are three times as likely as adults to be involved in a deadly crash, according to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. In fact, the U.S. Department of Transportation reports that automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for teens aged 15 to 18 nationwide, ahead of all other types of injury, disease, or violence. “Teens simply lack experience behind the wheel,” says Jennifer Ryan, director of AAA State Relations. “That increases the odds of a deadly outcome, not just for these young drivers, but for their passengers and others on the road.” The key to reducing these alarming numbers? “Parents are the front line of defense for keeping our roads safer,” Ryan says. By getting more involved with kids who are learning to drive and by talking about the dangers of risky behavior behind the wheel, parents can help reduce the number of deadly crashes on the road. If there’s a new driver in your life, it’s time to begin a potentially lifesaving dialogue to set and enforce rules, and—as always—to model safe and responsible driving.
Insist on education. Teens who participate in formal driver education programs are safer on the road. “Research confirms what conventional wisdom tells us: Driver education makes a difference,” says William Van Tassel, manager of AAA driver training programs. Young drivers who complete training receive 40 percent fewer traffic-related convictions than those who don’t attend a formal program.

SAVE ON COVERAGE
AAA Insurance offers discounts for young drivers who maintain a good GPA or pass the online teenSmart class. To learn more, go to AAA.com/insurance.
Be there for backup. It’s not legal, but
it’s a fact of life that many teens drink alcohol. Make sure your teen knows that you will provide a safe ride, anytime, anywhere, to keep him or her from driving while intoxicated or riding with an impaired driver. For more tips on helping your teenager get used to life behind the wheel, go to teendriving.aaa.com.
A driving agreement between you and your child sets clear expectations. Putting everything in writing helps parents uphold standards consistently and reminds teens that driving is a privilege. Items to include in a contract: Who is and is not allowed as a passenger while the teen is driving.
●
● Non-negotiable rules, such as wearing a safety belt, driving at or below the speed limit, and obeying all traffic laws.
Forbidden actions, such as racing, driving while intoxicated, concealing tickets, and letting others drive the car.
●
40
● Courtesies and considerations that your teen driver agrees to observe, such as telling you where they are going and what time they will be home, keeping the car clean, pulling over to use a cell phone, and avoiding making unnecessary side trips or stops. ● Parental commitments that the teen driver can count on, such as maintaining a safe vehicle, paying for driver training classes, sharing observations and coaching tips in a calm manner, and being available for a ride regardless of time of the call or the situation.
● You can also include specifics such as mileage allotments, car maintenance and routine upkeep tasks, expenses, and conditions that will result in the loss of driving privileges. Once you create a contract, be sure to update it periodically. As your teenager demonstrates good driving habits and good judgment over time, specific points in the contract may be renegotiated. You may relax restrictions, or if your teen has not lived up to the contract, add new restrictions. (For a pdf of a sample contract, go to AAA.com/teencontract.)

Choosing a safe car
Beyond a license, young drivers will need a set of wheels to go anywhere. Of course, their priorities for selecting the make, model, and year of this vehicle (fun and stylish) may differ greatly from yours (safe in the event of a collision). If you’re investing in a car for a teen’s use, or simply deciding which family vehicle to lend or pass along, consider these suggestions: Avoid vehicles that encourage reckless driving. Sports cars and highperformance vehicles with a lot of horsepower may lead to speeding and other unsafe practices.
VESNAANDJIC / ISTOCK
●
clockwise from above: Include safety expectations in your teen-parent driving contract, such as always buckling up. Choose a car with the right safety features for your new driver. Set clear expectations and always lend an ear to the young drivers in your life.
● Pick a vehicle with sufficient protection in case of a crash. New cars are likely to be equipped with the latest safety features; if you’re considering
an older car, check for antilock brakes, air bags, and electronic stability control at a minimum. Don’t let your teen drive an unstable vehicle. Sport utility vehicles, especially smaller ones, tend to be less stable than sedans because they have higher centers of gravity. Rapid steering maneuvers—such as a driver overcorrecting to avoid an obstacle—can cause rollovers in less stable vehicles. Vehicles with lower centers of gravity give drivers a better chance of safely managing an emergency situation.
●
● Before you buy, check the online safety ratings of the car you are considering. AAA offers extensive resources to help you evaluate vehicle safety. Contact your local AAA branch for more information. ●

Springtime sunshine Hikers entering Briones Regional Park from the trailhead at Old Briones Road are rewarded right away with a meander through old oaks—especially lovely in spring, when the usually golden grass is a vivid green and wildflowers begin to open. The park, about 25 miles east of San Francisco, also boasts panoramic views of area landmarks: Mount Diablo, Mount Tamalpais, and the Sacramento River and Delta can all be seen from Briones Peak. It’s a favorite place for Member Kevin Schofield, who lives in neighboring Pleasant Hill. “I enjoy visiting at least once a month. Sometimes solo, sometimes with friends, and sometimes with family, but always with a camera,” he says, noting that he carries it in hand instead of tucked in a bag. “Sometimes photographic opportunities are so fleeting, you will miss them if you’re not ready.” — l e e a n n e j o n e s
