JEFF XANDER
The holiday season has always been one of my favorite times of the year, this unprecedented year being no exception. This season has me in a more reflective mood than usual, looking back on our past journeys and looking ahead to what awaits in 2021. My reflections start, as always, with how much I appreciate you, our valued Members. The confidence you put in our abilities to help you outsmart life—on the road, at home, and nearly everywhere in between—is humbling. But we’re up for the challenge whenever and wherever we’re called to serve you. We’ve received positive feedback from Members on many of the new benefits and upgraded services AAA has introduced during 2020. Many of you have taken advantage of our Smart Home self-install solutions, which provide trusted home security and monitoring in markets where our professional installation services are not yet available. Others have used AAA discounts to save on everyday as well as special purchases. We’ve been offering a 50 percent savings to Members who add family and loved ones to their Membership account; that too has been well received. And the expansion of our regional services—such as GIG Car Share and AAA House Manager—is making them available to even more of you. During 2020, you’ve also told us how reassured you feel having AAA by your side for roadside assistance, battery services, even auto insurance. That peace of mind was also evident in your use of our AAA-owned and -approved auto-repair centers to keep your vehicles road-ready. Your trust in our services is truly appreciated. Turning my attention to 2021, I’d like to encourage you once again to remember the hundreds of ways you can save more money as a Member of AAA. Bundling your auto and home insurance policies with AAA can save you hundreds of dollars. Those savings add up and can help you better manage your budget. We’ll continue to make improvements (and have some exciting new announcements) in the year ahead, all geared to adding more value to your Membership. For now, stay safe and healthy. And, again, thank you for taking AAA along on all of your life’s journeys. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! ba.

New Blue Shield plans add AAA Membership to Medicare. As we all get older, health and mobility are the keys to staying independent. Now Blue Shield of California has come up with four new Medicare plans to help maintain both: Blue Shield Inspire HMO, Blue Shield Inspire HMO D-SNP, Blue Shield Inspire PPO, and Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire. All combine essential medical coverage with a Classic AAA Membership. “We are excited to team up with AAA Northern California to bring important products and services to our Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire and Medicare Advantage plan members as we continually strive to support
8
them in their health and well-being— and that includes helping them live vibrant, independent lives while giving them tools to stay safe on the road,” said Krista Bowers, general manager and vice president of Medicare for Blue Shield of California. “This collaboration exemplifies our mission as a nonprofit health plan to create a personal, high-quality experience for our most vulnerable members.” Blue Shield’s new Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire will provide all the benefits of Medicare Supplement Plan G plus additional health services such as an allowance for over-the-counter medical supplies and reimbursements for vision care and hearing aids. The SilverSneakers fitness and wellness program covers gym memberships. All told, if fully utilized, Plan G Inspire has the potential to offer enrollees more than $2,000 in added benefits.1 All eligible Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire members will also have access to a new benefit: Independence and Safe Mobility with AAA. (Blue Shield Inspire Medicare Advantage members must have one or more

To determine eligibility for the SSBCI, Blue Shield Inspire members whose effective date of enrollment in the plan is January 1, 2021, or later must complete an Attestation Form and submit it to the plan. For members whose effective date of enrollment in Blue Shield Inspire is prior to January 1, 2021, Blue Shield will review member data to determine eligibility and will notify members of their eligibility. That means they can get all the benefits of a Classic AAA Membership, including 24/7 roadside assistance, and enjoy the use of edu cational tools and resources that promote safer driving, such as AAA’s Roadwise Driver (an online course designed to help sharpen driving skills and promote safe habits). “Membership with AAA opens the doors to so many exclusive services and benefits, including America’s most-recommended roadside assistance program,” says Rolando Flores, vice president of membership marketing at AAA. “Adding AAA benefits to Blue Shield Medicare Inspire plans will help senior drivers stay independently mobile for as long as possible and as safely as possible.” If you live in Northern California and reside in the coverage area, you could be eligible for these new Blue Shield Inspire plans. Medicare’s annual election period is October 15 to December 7, 2020.2 (Blue Shield Inspire Medicare Advantage plans that include the SSBCI vary by plan type, benefits, and service area.) How to install a car seat the right way by av i ta l a n d r e ws i l lu s t r at i o n s by h a i s a m h u s s e i n
Almost 75 percent of child-protective car seats in the United States are installed incorrectly. Errors are understandable: Installation instructions can be confusing and don’t always account for the variables of real-world vehicles. How to make sure your youngest passengers stay safe back there? Here are some tips from the experts at AAA. With the exception of the top tether strap, they apply to both rear-facing and forward-facing seats.
Choose the best place. Consult your vehicle’s manual to learn where a seat can be safely installed in the back seat. Make sure the seat is at the correct recline angle.
Position the chest clip correctly. Place the chest clip over the child’s sternum at armpit level. Leaving it lower, over the child’s stomach, can cause injuries.
Mind the strap gap. If there’s space between the bottom buckle of the car seat and your child’s groin, consult the seat’s manual: It may instruct you to adjust the strap or to fill the space with something like a rolled-up washcloth to create a more secure fit.
Make sure it’s tight enough. If the seat moves more than one inch side to side or front to back when you pull on it at the belt path, that’s too loose.
10
Use your car’s seatbelt or the seat’s lower anchors. If you’re using the seatbelt to secure the seat, feed it through the belt path (look for the arrows on the car seat labels) and consult your car’s manual for how to lock it in place. If using the seat’s lower anchors, check your car seat and vehicle manuals for approved positions. Note: Lower anchors have a weight limit (usually between 45 and 65 pounds), which includes the seat and the child; when your kid outgrows that limit, install the seat with the seatbelt.

Sacred Stone of the Southwest is on the Brink of Extinction
B.
26 carats of genuine Arizona turquoise
C
enturies ago, Persians, Tibetans and Mayans considered turquoise a gemstone of the heavens, believing the striking blue stones were sacred pieces of sky. Today, the rarest and most valuable turquoise is found in the American Southwest–– but the future of the blue beauty is unclear. On a recent trip to Tucson, we spoke with fourth generation turquoise traders who explained that less than five percent of turquoise mined worldwide can be set into jewelry and only about twenty mines in the Southwest supply gem-quality turquoise. Once a thriving industry, many Southwest mines have run dry and are now closed. We found a limited supply of turquoise from Arizona and snatched it up for our Sedona Turquoise C. Collection. Inspired by the work of those ancient craftsmen and designed to showcase the exceptional blue stone, each stabilized vibrant cabochon features a unique, oneof-a-kind matrix surrounded in Bali metalwork. You could drop over $1,200 on a turquoise pendant, or you could secure 26 carats of genuine Arizona turquoise for just $99. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. If you aren’t completely happy with your purchase, send it back within 30 days for a complete refund of the item price. The supply of Arizona turquoise is limited, don’t miss your chance to own the Southwest’s brilliant blue treasure. Call today! Jewelry Specifications: • Arizona turquoise • Silver-finished settings

Enlist the top tether strap. The top tether keeps kids in forward-facing car seats secure in a collision—so use it every time. Connect the tether to an anchor and tighten. Your car’s manual will explain where your vehicle’s tether anchors are and how to use them.
Do the pinch test. To be sure the harness is tight enough, buckle in your child, then try to pinch the straps at his or her shoulders. If there’s any slack, tighten. Harness straps should lie flat. In rear-facing seats, they should feed through the slot at or just below your child’s shoulders; in forward-facing seats, they should be at or just above the shoulders.
Don’t add anything that doesn’t belong. Unless the manual specifies otherwise, never attach accessories that weren’t sold with the car seat, including toys, trays, mirrors, inserts, and pads. They can all affect how the seat will perform in a crash. If you need to keep your child warm, place blankets and jackets over the buckled harness, not under it.
Don’t turn children forward too soon. Little ones should stay rear-facing until they hit their seat’s maximum weight or height limit. Similarly, older children should stay in forward-facing, five-point harness seats until they reach the equipment’s weight or height limit. After that, it’s time for a booster seat.
✓ Look to AAA for help Check for recalls and expiration dates. Before you buy, check nhtsa.gov/recalls to be sure that the model you want hasn’t been recalled. Also check that it hasn’t expired. There should be an expiration date somewhere on the seat. (It’s typically printed on the back or bottom; if you can’t find it, check the manufacturer’s website.) If your seat is expired, replace it. If a car seat has been in a moderate or severe crash, get a new one.
12
After your best attempt at installing your car seat, have an expert doublecheck your work with an online inspection. Visit AAA.com/carseats to schedule an appointment with a certified technician. AAA experts will check for recalls, confirm that you’re using the correct seat, and show you how best to install it and harness your child. This service is free.

sumers. The most affordable is the Nissan Leaf, with a starting price of $32,525. Federal and state incentives can reduce the final cost by as much as $10,000. The most expensive EV is the lightning-fast Porsche Taycan Turbo S, which sells for $185,000. The best-selling EV model today is the Tesla Model 3, which starts at $41,000—only a couple thousand bucks more than the average U.S. car.
Q A
Answers to a few common questions about EVs.
According to the research firm Guidehouse Insights, nearly 17 million plug-in electric vehicles will be on the road in North America by the year 2030. But while the market for EVs is growing, there are still plenty of questions in buyers’ minds about their cost and practicality. Here’s what you need to know.
16
o electric vehicles provide D enough range for typical daily driving? The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that U.S. drivers go an average 31 miles per day. Most EVs today get roughly 200 miles from a single charge, providing plenty of range for daily commutes. One caveat: Cold weather can reduce that range by as much as 40 percent, according to a study by AAA. But even in that worst-case scenario, the average EV has enough juice from one charge for almost four days of commuting.
Q A
Are electric vehicles too expensive for average buyers? Kelley Blue Book estimates that the average price in 2020 for a light-duty vehicle (passenger car) is about $38,900. That’s a good benchmark. Currently, about 20 electric vehicle models are available to U.S. con-
Q A
Do EV owners risk having to replace costly batteries? Most automakers selling EVs offer a battery warranty of eight to 10 years. Electric cars have been on the market for only about a decade, so battery replacements have been extremely uncommon. That said, if you needed a total battery replacement today, it could cost several thousand dollars. A widespread market for used EVs with depleted batteries should eventually develop. By that time, the cost for replacement is expected to drop— and an entire industry dedicated to recycling and refurbishing batteries is likely to emerge.

ill I save money on fuel by W driving an EV rather than a gas-powered car? According to figures from the U.S. Department of Energy’s fueleconomy.gov, a Toyota Corolla that averages 33 miles per gallon will cost $1.52 to travel 25 miles. (That’s based on a gas price of $2 a gallon.) Switch to a 52 mpg Toyota Prius hybrid, and the price drops to 95 cents for those 25 miles. If you upgrade to a Tesla Model 3, which is rated at the equivalent of 131 miles per gallon, those 25 miles will cost only 83 cents.

re EVs really that green A when the electricity they use is produced by burning coal? According to the Department of Energy, EVs convert more than 77 percent of electrical energy from the grid to power at the wheels. Gasoline vehicles only make use of 12 to 30 percent of the energy stored in gasoline. So as a matter of pure energy efficiency, EVs have a big advantage. Still, charging an EV does use grid electricity (unless you have solar panels). The Union of Concerned Scientists analyzed total carbon emissions for both gasoline and electricity production and use in every region of the country. Driving the average EV using grid-supplied energy creates carbon emissions equivalent to those of a 122 mpg gas car in California.

oes the U.S. electric grid D have the capacity to charge millions of EVs? Electricity demand has been flat for the past decade, while capacity has increased. If energy production and consumption continue to rise at the same rate, the grid should be able to meet fore-

casts for increased use of electric vehicles, according to a study by the Pew Charitable Trusts. Most utilities welcome the opportunity not only to sell more electricity but also to spread demand throughout the day—and most EV owners charge their vehicles at night, when there’s extra grid capacity and utility rates are lower. Emerging technologies will also allow EVs to push energy stored in their batteries back to the grid, actually adding power to the system.

an people who live in C apartments or multifamily housing own an EV? The convenience of plugging your car in at home is an advantage, with one notable exception. About one-quarter of U.S. residents live in apartments or condos without dedicated parking spots. That makes EV charging more challenging. EV owners who live in multifamily dwellings need to get creative. Strategies include asking the property owner to allow you to install a charger in the garage or parking lot and using charging spots where you park for work. Fortunately, the situation may improve. Many building codes now require make-ready spots for EV chargers in new construction. And Los Angeles, among other places, now offers a growing number of on-street chargers attached to light poles. — b r a d l e y b e r m a n

up-to-date and its administrator password is strong. If you don’t know how to check and change its configuration, consult the manual. Secure your Wi-Fi network with a unique password and user name. Change the name of the network (SSID) from the default; don’t use a name that would help an attacker identify it (such as your address).
Hackers can target home security systems.
2
Make sure you’re using robust encryption. Before you buy or install any smart device in your home—especially if it’s related to security, such as a door lock—check its compliance with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
Secure your smart home devices The tech you use to make your home smarter shouldn’t make it less safe.
Have a smart speaker at home? An intelligent thermostat? A video doorbell? For more and more of us, Internet-connected devices like these are making our homes smarter and easier to manage. But they have one big downside: They can be vulnerable to security threats. Unless they’re properly managed, smart home devices can be taken over by bad actors to do things such as override your security system. They could also give attackers access to the rest of your home network—and your data. “Securing your home network as part of installing your smart home security system is the most important thing you can do,” says David Judkins, cybersecurity lead for AAA Smart Home. Here are four ways to do just that.
1
Make your router and network harder to hack. If your router is more than two years old, replace it. Otherwise, be sure its software is
18
Use strong passwords. Follow the same password rules for your smart devices as you do for your bank and other sensitive online accounts. If a device supports twofactor authentication—meaning you get a text message with a numeric code each time you log in—use it.
4
Keep firmware current. Install firmware updates for your devices as soon as they’re available. (Many devices will do this for you automatically.) Periodically rebooting your devices and your router will help your network remain secure.

Mind your greenery. Christmas trees cause some 200 U.S. home fires each year. If you celebrate with a real tree, buy one that’s fresh and water it daily so it doesn’t dry out and turn combustible, advises Gary Russell, a senior catastrophe claims manager for CSAA Insurance Group. Set your tree at least three feet away from fireplaces and other heat sources, make sure any electric decorations are working properly, and remove the tree from your home before it’s desiccated. Prefer a fake tree? Get one labeled “fire-resistant,” and don’t put anything electric on it if it’s metallic. Be careful with other seasonal plants too: Holly, lily, mistletoe, pine, and poinsettia can be poisonous.
→ Safe at home for the holidays Before you decorate, prep your space to avoid common seasonal hazards. The winter holidays typically center around celebrating with family, which feels more important than ever this year. Even if you’re only able to connect with loved ones over video, you’ll want to be free to enjoy every second. These 13 safety tips will help your household avoid fires, falls, and other fails.

Stay warm—without getting burned. Keep space heaters far from anything in your home that could catch fire, and don’t plug them in until you’ve checked the circuit to confirm that it can handle the appliance. At least once a year, have your furnace inspected and replace its filter.
5
Only you can prevent cooking fires. Thanksgiving is the peak day for kitchen fires nationwide—followed by Christmas, Christmas Eve, and the day before Thanksgiving. Confirm that your smoke alarms have working batteries, review your household’s fire escape plan, unplug countertop appliances when they aren’t in use, and store a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Never leave a lit stovetop unattended. Never throw water on a grease fire; turn off the heat and smother the flames with a pot lid. And, if you’re cooking a big bird, use an oven or a grill instead of a fryer.
6
Clear the air. When you’re spending a lot of time inside, air quality matters. Run an air purifier in each room, and change your HVAC system’s filters. Add plants to your everyday decor. “Having live greenery in your home is a great way to clean the air,” says physician Anna Cabeca.
Fend for Fido. Keep dogs away from cooked bones, potatoes, turkey skin, anything with onions in it, and sweets (especially any kind of chocolate). Keep all pets away from the Christmas tree, which could fall on them. Ingesting pine needles, tinsel or other decorations, or chemicals in the tree’s water can cause serious problems as well.
4
Shield your little ones. Protect the children in your life. Opt for unbreakable ornaments and shatterproof lights. If decorations have small, detachable pieces, put them on higher shelves or branches. Keep strings, ribbons, and plastic bags inaccessible. As for gifts, heed products’ age ratings. Don’t give toddlers playthings with small parts, and don’t present children under 10 years old anything with an electrical cord.
28
7
Deck the halls, ditch the falls. Decorating the house in tinsel and lights can easily look like a nerve-wracking scene from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Keep ladders and outdoor decorations far from power lines, use clips instead of nails around electrical cords, and raise plugs off the ground and away from moisture. Use outdoor extension cords outdoors, reserving indoor ones for indoor use, to prevent overload. Inspect light strands and discard any with damaged wires. Check for safety certification labels, and don’t pinch cords through small spaces. Using a ladder? Choose one that’s the right size for the job, follow every instruction on its label, set it on a firm surface, and pay close attention while climbing.

Imbibe responsibly. Enjoy alcoholic beverages in moderation and encourage others to do the same. Confirm that everyone has (or is) a designated driver. Add nonalcoholic drinks to your holiday standards. Check your state’s liability laws and your homeowners policy to see if you’re responsible for injuries or damage caused by intoxicated guests.
9
11
Tend your fire. Use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from flying out. Keep kids and pets away from the hearth, and store a fire extinguisher nearby. “Make sure your smoke detectors are working properly,” advises Matthew Preble, a home services team leader with AAA, “by testing with actual smoke, not by pushing the button.” Replace the entire unit at least once a decade. While enjoying a fire, Russell says, “Don’t throw wrapping paper in the fireplace. It can cause flash fires. Instead, recycle or reuse it.” Dispose of ash by letting it cool for 12 to 24 hours before placing it in a metal bucket and moving it outside. And have your chimney and fireplace inspected and swept every year.
12
10
Keep candles contained. Candles are a big part of winter festivities. They should be placed at least 12 inches from any flammable items, including the Christmas tree. Keep candle displays someplace they can’t be knocked over, and stash matches and lighters away from kids. Never leave candles burning unattended; always blow them out if you’re leaving the house or going to bed. Consider using flameless, batteryoperated candle lights instead.
30
Make sure you’re covered. If something bad should happen—your dog bites a delivery person on your property, you have a house fire, your freshly cut tree slides off your car—insurance can help mitigate the mishap. Check your coverage to confirm that you have enough, especially to cover any new, high-liability items (such as a trampoline, jewelry, or electronics). Update your home inventory accordingly. Consider adding endorsements to your homeowners policy, Russell says. “This may also be the time to take out a personal umbrella policy for additional coverage,” he adds.
13
Assure food safety. While cooking, wash your hands often. Keep raw meat away from fresh produce, and use a food thermometer to make sure you’ve roasted that turkey or pork sufficiently. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours after a meal, and don’t eat anything more than four days after it was prepared.

Secure your empty home. If you’re out of town during the holidays, set lights on timers, put a hold on mail and newspaper deliveries, ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on things, maintain your lawn service, and don’t discuss travel plans in public (including on social media). Before you leave home, turn off decorations to prevent an electrical short.

identity theft Fraud committed in your name can cost you time and money. Here’s how to avoid becoming a victim, plus tips for recovering if you do.
When Alexis Moore looked at her credit report as a matter of routine, she discovered a strange entry: a satellite TV service with an overdue balance of about $250. Moore, who wasn’t a customer of the company, figured it was simply a mistake. “I thought I could take care of it myself,” the Northern California–based attorney says. Turns out, someone had stolen her identity and racked up months of charges. “I reported it to the police and the Federal Trade Commission—all the things they say you’re supposed to do,” Moore explains. Despite her efforts, she says, a “firestorm of nonsense” erupted, one that took two years and a legal battle to extinguish. The thief was never apprehended. More than 650,000 people in the United States reported incidents of identity theft to the FTC in 2019. The actual number of victims is probably much higher, because these crimes take many forms and get reported inconsistently. Javelin Strategy by c h r i s to p h e r n u l l A A A | VIA

their personal information or unwittingly downloading malware [malicious software] that will steal information.” Warren adds that the United States saw a rash of fraudulent attacks related to federal government stimulus checks earlier in the year.
» Knowing the consequences
»R ecognizing identity theft Identity theft is defined as illicitly using someone else’s personal information for financial gain or any other benefit. The most prevalent example is credit card fraud, in which the thief opens an account under an assumed name. Related crimes include getting a phone, renting an apartment, taking out a bank loan, or applying for a driver’s license with a stolen identity. The FTC tracks seven broad categories of identity theft, nearly all of which are on the rise. The ways criminals approach stealing someone’s identity vary just as widely. They might “skim” credit or debit cards by attaching a device to a legit card reader that captures and transmits account numbers and PINs. They may request a Social Security number under false pretenses in the form of a “phishing” email or phone call. They may pilfer personal information from documents taken from mailboxes and trash or recycling bins. These are but a few examples. The variety of identity theft scams seems boundless, says Jessica Warren, manager of fraud awareness, education, and outreach for Western Union. “There are romance scams, giveaway scams, even inheritance scams,” she says. “It’s something that can happen to anyone.” Steve Weisman, a law professor at Bentley University and author of the book Identity Theft Alert, warns that identity theft appears to be increasing in 2020, a trend he attributes to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Phony websites are luring people into providing 34
Because identity theft takes so many forms, the impact of an attack can range from inconsequential to life-changing. Fraudulent credit card purchases that the real cardholder discovers and reports quickly to the financial institution typically result in little or no damage to the victim; your liability tops out at $50. It’s more complicated with debit cards: Federal law limits your liability to $500 if you report an attack within 60 days; if you don’t, your liability is unlimited and you can lose all the money in your account, Weisman notes. That said, as Alexis Moore’s story shows, identity theft can have a severe and lasting impact. Scammers who open new accounts, borrow money, or even buy property in your name can cost you money and damage your credit long-term. The consequences of identity theft can go beyond financial problems too. Your stolen ID could be handed to police by the actual perpetrator of a crime, claiming to be you and opening you up to a wrongful criminal prosecution, says Gabe Turner, chief editor of Security.org. In one burgeoning type of identity fraud, scammers use a victim’s health insurance to get treatment or prescription drugs under the victim’s name. This could lead to medical bills and, if controlled substances are involved, criminal liability until the matter is resolved.
» Protecting your identity As with other aspects of your personal and financial life, exercising care and diligence will help you protect yourself from identity theft. Keep passwords, credit card numbers, and other information private to reduce your vulnerability. Shred paperwork before you recycle it. Regularly monitor your account activity. Discovering problems quickly decreases their impact on victims and expedites recovery, says Victor Lamond, operations manager for AAA Identity Champion. “We live in a fast-moving digital world, so the faster we can detect an instance of identity

& Research, a financial advisory firm, estimates last year’s total monetary losses nationwide due to identity fraud at $16.9 billion. Experts predict the losses will continue to grow. To protect yourself, it’s important to understand the basics about identity theft, the possible consequences of becoming a victim, and the ways you can minimize your risks.

theft and take action, the better we will be at reducing risks to our finances, privacy, and reputation.” You can practice good digital hygiene by using strong passwords and two-factor authentication on your accounts, filtering out spam, being wary of attachments, installing software that regularly checks your computer for viruses and malicious code, and avoiding sharing details (such as your mother’s maiden name) on your social media accounts, which you should always set to private. It’s possible to monitor for fraudulent activity using two free tools: credit reports and notifications from financial institutions. Annualcreditreport.com, a federally mandated service, gives consumers access to a copy of their credit report from each of the major reporting agencies—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—once a year. These reports summarize all accounts open in your name, including payment history and other details. Your primary task when reviewing them is to make sure everything is accurate. If you find an error, open a dispute. (Pro tip: Rather than requesting all three reports at the same time, get a different one every four months, which improves your odds of catching any fraudulent activity early.) Meanwhile, set up email or text notifications for activity related to your debit cards, credit cards, and
bank accounts. This is the fastest way to uncover any wrongdoing. These alerts, which can be set up through each provider’s website, are highly configurable. For instance, you could be notified immediately if your debit card is used outside the United States, or if a transaction exceeds a certain threshold (whatever dollar amount you choose). To ratchet up your protection, you can opt into an identity-theft protection service (such as Identity Champion from AAA). These services, sold as subscriptions, keep tabs on your credit report and alert you to fishy changes. Some plans offer recovery assistance when personal information has been compromised, as well as insurance coverage that may cover financial losses related to identity theft.
» Recovering from an attack If, despite all your precautions, your identity is stolen, the best thing to do is take action right away. Call your bank and credit card providers, change potentially compromised passwords, and consider putting a fraud alert on your credit report. In more severe cases, you’ll need to take additional steps. The FTC outlines best practices online at identitytheft.gov. Steps include freezing your credit (asking each of the three major agencies to stop issuing new credit in your name until you decide otherwise) for extra security and reporting the crime to the FTC and local law enforcement. Much of this can be done online, and you’ll want a “paper trail” if your case ends up in court, as Moore’s did. Resolving an identity theft can take time and persistence, but failing to address it head-on can result in bigger problems. “There is no shame in looking after yourself,” Moore says. “If you see something wrong, don’t wait. Get help immediately.” ●

THE MISSION
Explore these four diverse neighborhoods on foot to discover the real city. ike all great cities, San Francisco holds a few secrets. Its big-name destinations— Fisherman’s Wharf, Union Square, Golden Gate Park—are justly famous. But tucked away elsewhere in its 49 square miles are districts just as appealing but all too often overlooked, by residents and visitors alike. Take, as examples, the Mission, the Inner Richmond, the Marina, and North Beach: Spend a day strolling any one of these easily walkable neighborhoods and you’ll experience a San Francisco that will charm and surprise you—and you just might find yourself falling in love with the city all over again.

hink of the Mission as a work of art— specifically, one of the murals that line Balmy and Clarion Alleys . The Mission’s wall paintings are brilliant, kaleidoscopic, and thronged with San Franciscans past and present—mothers and children, workers and writers, protesters and priests. Like the neighborhood itself, these cityscapes vibrate with history and dreams. The Mission is San Francisco’s oldest neighborhood—born in 1776 when Franciscan friars chose the vicinity for their new mission—and its newest, the favored hangout of the city’s 21st-century technorati. The Mission is adobe churches, prim Victorians, and sleek new condos. It’s artisanal pizza joints next door to botanicas and bodegas. It is never, ever boring. The best place to start your tour of the Mission

is along 24th Street (or, as it’s dubbed on the street signs, calle 24, latino cultural district). And the best way to arrive there is hungry, because the stretch of 24th between Guerrero and Potrero has more inexpensive but irresistible restaurants than anywhere else in the city. For superior tacos, hit Taqueria Vallarta. Just down the street, Taqueria El Farolito’s burritos lead many polls as the best in the city. (Just don’t tell the folks at La Taqueria around the corner.) La Torta Gorda specializes in Mexican sandwiches stuffed with carnitas, chicken mole, and more. Eterna Primavera Bakery will satisfy your sweet tooth with pan dulce and other pastries; the breakfast huevos rancheros there are not to be ignored, either. Also on 24th, Mixcoatl is a colorful stop for Mexican arts, crafts, and clothing. In normal times,

lent tours of the neighborhood’s famed public art, but you can also tour on your own. (Balmy Alley is almost next door to Taqueria Vallarta between 24th and 25th. Clarion Alley runs between Mission and Valencia a few blocks to the north.) If 24th Street represents the traditional Mission, Valencia Street epitomizes the neighborhood’s newer side. Check out Dsptch for stylishly minimalist backpacks and laptop cases. Topdrawer offers color-coordinated travel gear—notebooks, backpacks, weekend bags—that it calls “tools for nomads.” Valencia is also home to a crazily diverse food scene. The elegant gâteaux at Craftsman and Wolves gleam like gems. Stop two doors down at Dandelion for mochas and rich, rich brownies. In a pizza mood? Little Star does deep-dish Chicago style, while Pizzeria Delfina serves stellar thin-crust. Up 18th, Tartine cranks out spectacular breads, sandwiches, and pastries. For inventively flavored ice creams (honey lavender, roasted banana), continue on 18th to Bi-Rite Creamery for a cup or cone. Wrap up your tour at the spot where the neighborhood—and the city—began:
, popularly known as Mission Dolores. The adobe-walled, redwoodbeamed chapel charms in its simplicity; adjoining it is the grander basilica, added in 1918, whose twin aquamarine-tiled towers glitter in the Mission sun. The gardens, planted with native trees and roses, are a lush oasis of calm. From there, walk two blocks south to the Mission’s joyous backyard, Dolores Park . This 14-acre expanse received a $20 million makeover a few years ago: Now its sloping green lawn is the ideal perch from which to admire the whole Mission District spreading out below you and the glittering downtown skyline beyond—a living work of art.

of San Francisco’s best Chinese food, plus delicacies from Burma and Spain, as well as first-rate shopping for books, kitchen supplies, and rare teas, all in one easyto-navigate package. The Inner Richmond’s center is Clement Street between Arguello and Park Presidio Boulevards. A fine place to start your tour is on Arguello at Arsicault Bakery . A couple of years ago, Bon Appétit magazine named it the bakery of the year. “Bakery of the century is more like it,” you’ll say to yourself when you taste one of the insanely buttery, flaky croissants. Head west on Clement itself, where neighborhood shopping leans toward the small and one of a kind. Tantrum’s circus-lettered sign promises fun before you even step inside; once you do, you’ll be delighted by the selection of toys and games, plus such curios as lamps shaped like ducks. Not far away, the Wishing Well Workshop has a well-curated selection of pens, paints, and paper for artistic types. Pete Mulvihill’s bookshop is an essential stop. Current best sellers, classics, children’s books—Green Apple will have whatever you’re after, either in

ut-of-towners may not know the Inner Richmond, but San Franciscans revere it. Why? As Pete Mulvihill—co-owner of neighborhood institution Green Apple Books—puts it, it’s “the true diversity, the mom-andpop businesses, the cute shops that aren’t precious or stuffy, the cafés—what’s not to love?” He’s right. With its locals-focused business district, long straight avenues stretching south to Golden Gate Park, and tidy row homes, the Inner Richmond is pleasantly low-key. Spend a little time poking around, though, and you may find yourself staying the day. Out here in what natives call the Avenues, you’ll find some
city’s center for dim sum. Especially on Sunday, you’ll see people patiently lining up outside Clement’s many take-out places for siu mai, pork buns, and pot stickers; Good Luck Dim Sum and Xiao Long Bao Restaurant are reliable standbys. Burmese food is another Inner Richmond specialty, with Burma Superstar and Mandalay drawing fans of tea leaf salad and black pepper soup from all over the city. Craving dessert? Schubert’s Bakery has been serving lavish, whipped-cream-topped cakes—such as the spectacular raspberry Swedish princess cake— for more than 100 years. And generations of San Francisco kids have successfully urged parents to take them to the Toy Boat Dessert Cafe for sundaes and rides on Butterscotch, the mechanical horse. If you want to relax somewhere soothing and pretty after all your shopping, dim sum, and sundaes, head a few blocks north to Mountain Lake Park , where you can loll on the wide green lawn with views of reed-lined Mountain Lake. Like the Inner Richmond itself, this park is a hidden San Francisco delight.

its main store or in the annex two doors down. The Inner Richmond is a paradise for foodies. Sidewalk displays fronting the Chinese produce stores overflow with dragon fruit and Asian pears. Aroma Tea gathers teas from China and Taiwan. The Spanish Table offers one-stop shopping for all things Iberian: regional wines and cheeses, chorizo and other sausages, and just about everything you need to make paella, from saffron to massive circular pans. If you’ve been cooking at home more lately and have realized that you absolutely must have an industrial-sized stockpot (it’s been known to happen), make a beeline for Kamei Housewares & Restaurant Supply , a cavernous space crowded floor to ceiling with gleaming pans, steamers, rice cookers, and more. And if you’re visiting on Sunday, don’t miss the Clement Street Farmers Market for fresh-from-the-farm produce, baked goods, and a warm sense of neighborliness. If all that food shopping excites your appetite, the Inner Richmond has you covered. Like the Mission, the Inner Richmond specializes in the inexpensive, unpretentious, and delicious. It’s the

n a sunny day, San Francisco’s Marina District can s eem like the most blissed-out place on earth. Chestnut Street bustles with brunch goers debating Bloody Mar y versus mimosa, shoppers pondering sustainably sourced yoga pants, and kerchief-wearing golden retrievers leading their humans out for lattes. A few blocks away, along Marina Boulevard, r unners check their times on their Fitbits and the bay glistens like a turquoise necklace. It’s a carefree beach town stretching along San Francisco’s northern bay front between Fisherman’s Wharf and the Presidio, the city’s most relaxing yet energizing place to spend the day. Chestnut is the neighborhood’s retail heart. It’s very big on clothing, from sandals and shorts to more formal options. Amour Vert specializes in elegant ecofashion for women—pants, dresses, and tops in sustainable fabrics. Roark is the kind of store that makes you plan a trip to Bali just so you’ll have an excuse to wear the boldly
patterned adventure-friendly shorts, shirts, and swimwear. Foodwise, the Marina favors informal and ebullient. For a breakfast bite, Le Marais Bakery offers Paris-worthy baked goods. Hearty weekend brunches are a Marina tradition, and the chilaquiles and waffles at the Tipsy Pig are the midday meal at its best. For a simpler, more portable feast, stroll down to Lucca

, where the cheerful green awning announces that the place has been selling sandwiches to San Franciscans since 1929. And what sandwiches! The caprese—fresh mozzarella with tomatoes, basil, and olive oil on ciabatta—is sublime. Other options include the Marina outpost of the local chain Tacolicious: Its carnitas tacos are succulent, the margaritas potent. Causwells is justly famous for its Americana burger, but the ribs and brisket should not be ignored. At Delarosa, pizza commands most of the menu; the margherita with Burrata is a popular choice. A16 is nationally acclaimed for its southern Italian cuisine and regionally focused wine list. After your tour of Chestnut, venture into the Marina’s residential streets, architecturally among the most appealing in the city. The area was developed on the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and even now it possesses a slightly exotic beauty, with red-tile-roofed Spanish revival homes and apartment houses lining streets named Avila and Prado

and Cervantes. Walk a few blocks to the west and you’ll come to the Palace of Fine Arts , a graceful remnant of the 1915 exposition. Designed by famed architect Bernard Maybeck, the ornate rotunda shimmers in the still waters of its reflecting pond, making it a favored backdrop for wedding photographs. From there, head north to Marina Boulevard and the Marina Green . Here’s the Marina’s spectacular front yard, a broad green lawn—on a nice day dotted with picnickers, yoga enthusiasts, and kids kicking soccer balls—stretching toward the Bay, with incredible front-row views of Alcatraz, the Marin Headlands, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

n a city filled with romance, North Beach is the most romantic neighborhood of all—“San Francisco’s lyrical heart,” writer Gary Kamiya called it in Cool Gray City of Love. Part of the romance comes from geography. It’s an intimate neighborhood, settled between Coit Tower–topped Telegraph Hill to the east and Russian Hill to the west, where narrow streets and pressed-together wooden houses make you feel you’re in a village separate from the city around it. The romance comes, too, from the people who have called North Beach home: its early-20th-century Italian immigrants, and later the poets who made the neighborhood ground zero for the Beat Generation. Times change, but these legacies persist: You can still get superb Italian food here, and
still find views that inspire poetry. The neighborhood’s spiritual center is Washington Square . Like North Beach itself, it’s small and charming—a place for picnicking, sunning, and lingering longer than you think you’re going to. Rising on the square’s north side is one of San Francisco’s most beloved landmarks: twin-spired, wedding-cake-white Saints Peter and Paul Church , built in 1924. Some of North Beach’s best restaurants cluster around the square. San Francisco icon Original Joe’s serves up old-school Italian American classics such as veal piccata and shrimp scampi. The urbane Park Tavern is best known for its Marlowe burger, with caramelized onion, cheddar, bacon, and horseradish aioli. Over at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana , you must first choose a style—classic American, classic Italian, Napoletana, or California, among others—and only then decide on toppings. All are delicious. And Mama’s on Washington Square serves breakfast all day, with eggs Benedict, salmon omelets, and more. In a coffee and pastry mood? Head to the charming little Victoria Pastry Company for cookies, cake, or tiramisu. From Washington Square you can see the rest of North Beach by ambling

For more ambitious meals, Sotto Mare shines with Italian seafood, including cioppino. For a take-out lunch, Molinari Delicatessen on Columbus is the Platonic ideal of an Italian deli, with sandwiches, salamis, and cheeses. Cute Little Vine on Grant makes out-of-the-ordinary sandwiches (such as smoked turkey breast, chorizo, provolone, and gochujang mayo) and offers a bounty of wines and cheeses. Take your food finds back to Washington Square for an alfresco meal, watch the city wheel by, and perhaps you too—like so many before you—will leave at least a little bit of your heart here. ●

Founded in 1953 by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, City Lights became internationally famous for publishing works by Allen Ginsberg and other Beat Generation writers, including Ferlinghetti himself. It remains an exemplary bookstore today, well stocked with Beat lit but also with contemporary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. As in the Richmond, North Beach’s most interesting retail stops are small and one of a kind. On Columbus, Biordi Art Imports sells gorgeous dinnerware—both traditional and contemporary—imported from Italy. On Grant, Macchiarini Creative Design, now in its third generation of Macchiarinis, crafts striking jewelry and sculptures. If you require sustenance or caffeination, you’re in luck. Simple pleasures Walking the charming neighborhoods of San Francisco is a local pastime—as Peter Fish details in the “Streets of San Francisco” feature on page 38—and when shelterin-place orders were implemented around the state, residents discovered a quiet city ideal for exploring. “I found myself lingering in different neighborhoods,” says aaa Member Brooke Ekdahl, who snapped this photo while wandering the Lake District one morning in search of the perfect cup of coffee. “When shelter in place started, I was reminded to slow down and appreciate the things I had been taking for granted in the day-to-day grind.” One of those simple pleasures seems to be contagious: Ekdahl has noticed more people enjoying neighborhood walks, reconnecting with places in their own backyards. — k at i e h e n ry
