NEW GOSS THROTTLE BODY

To suit Holden Commodore and Holden Captiva

Goss has released a new throttle body suitable for the Holden Commodore VE / WM series 3.6L V6 LY7, LE0, LW2 engines and the Holden Captiva 3.2L LU1 engine. Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) technology electronically connects the accelerator pedal to the throttle body, replacing a mechanical linkage. A typical ETC system consists of three major components: an accelerator pedal module (with two or more independent sensors); an electronic throttle body that can be opened and closed by an electric motor; and an engine control module (PCM or ECM). The ECM is a type of electronic control unit that employs software to determine the required throttle position by calculations from data measured by other sensors, including the accelerator pedal position sensors, engine speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor, and cruise control switches. The electric motor is then used to open the throttle valve to the desired angle via a closed-loop control algorithm within the ECM. The electronic throttle body assembly basically maintains the correct volume of air flow into the engine. Goss explains that original units frequently require replacing due to electronic sensor failure, excessive wear and tear, physical damage and can also be seasonal (colder months). Goss says it has spent many hours of R&D to determine the causes of failure and produce a quality aftermarket alternative replacement product. Common faults can include the engine misfiring; throttle ‘chatters’ but with no fault codes logged; ‘ESP off’ light activated and warning appearing in dash cluster; fault code P0101 ‘Air mass meter range/performance fault;’ and fault code P2176 ‘throttle control lower position not learned.’ Since this part is essential to the operation of your vehicle’s engine, quality tests on this part include on-vehicle and bench testing to ensure this part conforms to product standards for durability and a longer service life. Goss says benefits of its new throttle body (part number TB236) include: • Upgraded replacement - this electronic throttle body features enhanced internal components to prevent future failures. • It is 100 percent new, not remanufactured, for reliability and the added convenience of no core charge. • Fitment gaskets included. NEW PREMIUM AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENT TURBOS FROM CATERAN

Cateran aims to meet the increased demand for aftermarket replacement turbos

Over the past 20 years, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of turbo diesel SUVs, LCVs, and 4x4s. Owners of turbo diesel vehicles typically turn to specialist workshops when a failed turbocharger needs replacement. They usually end up with a replacement of either a rebuilt OEM or a new OEM turbocharger. Aftermarket turbochargers have also seen an increase in sales, but inexpensive turbos run the risk of being unreliable with substandard quality. Turbocharger manufacturer Cateran intends to change the game with its new line of products. After three years of development, Cateran introduced its range of premium new aftermarket replacement turbos. Cateran states that their turbochargers are thoroughly quality checked at their Melbourne facility, and they have been fine tuned to endure the tough Australian driving conditions. These turbos are compatible with the most popular turbo diesel SUV, LCV, and 4x4 vehicle models, including Toyota’s Landcruiser, Prado, HiAce, and Hilux; Nissan’s Patrol and Navara; Mitsubishi’s Triton and Pajero; and Holden’s Colorado, Rodeo, Jackaroo, and Captiva. The Isuzu D-max, Ford Ranger, and Hyundai iLoad are covered as well. Along with their turbochargers, Cateran offers various gasket kits, oil line kits, and turbo fastener kits. Cateran says that they know that finding the correct gaskets, studs, and fasteners can be a difficult and time-consuming challenge. Therefore, they have designed their gasket kits to offer OE quality at a much lower cost, and they include a kit with every Cateran turbocharger purchase. The Cateran turbocharger fitment fastener kits consist of OE spec (A286) steel and stainless steel rolled thread mounting studs, custom stainless steel washers, and Wurth copper coated nuts.

TENNECO SUPPLIES MONROE INTELLIGENT SUSPENSION TECHNOLOGY FOR BMW’S IX3

BMW’s new electric crossover SUV will feature Tenneco’s cutting-edge suspension technology

Automotive component manufacturer Tenneco has teamed up with German automaker BMW to offer exciting new intelligent suspension technology in a new electric crossover SUV. BMW has ambitiously scheduled 13 nextgeneration electric vehicles for launch by 2023. The BMW iX3 is the first of these EVs to become available. This new crossover SUV has the distinction of being BMW’s first all-electric SUV model. Among its many components, it will feature an optional Continuously Variable SemiActive Suspension with external valve (CVSAe) technology from Tenneco. This CVSAe suspension is just one of several cutting-edge technologies found in Tenneco’s Monroe Intelligent Suspension portfolio. The CVSAe suspension utilises four electronically controlled dampers to sense and continuously adapt to a dynamic operating environment. BMW’s electronic control unit (ECU) system is 34 featured in more than 40 popular vehicle models, including the iX3. The ECU processes a variety of sensor inputs. Then it adjusts the electronic valve accordingly in order to control the individual performance of each damper. Drivers have the option of selecting comfort driving mode, which is designed to offer maximum enjoyment. In vehicles equipped with lithium-ion battery packs, the CVSAe technology increases the damping force tuning range. The weight of the battery packs has the potential to increase the inertial force and other dynamic loads in various driving conditions. In these scenarios, the CVSAe semi-active dampers automatically apply increased damping force. This helps to reduce body pitch, also known as “brake dive,” while still maintaining optimal ride comfort. Cateran’s oil lines are made from low carbon 304 stainless steel. Cateran has given all of their turbochargers and accessories a threeyear/100,000 km warranty. Their products are available at NAPA Auto Parts, Repco, and Motospecs. The company has also announced that they will be releasing Cateran Intercooler Hose Kits and Cateran Replacement Intercoolers later this year. Cateran offers complimentary pre-installation, installation and post-installation support via their national Technical Support Hotline 1300 176 071. For a full range of parts and applications, visit www.cateran.com.au

Henrik Johansson is the Vice President and General Manager of Tenneco’s Advanced Suspension Technologies. He praises the versatility of the suspension, stating “CVSAe technology has become very appealing among leading car manufacturers and their customers because it delivers an exceptional driving experience in virtually all situations.” Tenneco states that the CVSAe suspension will give iX3 owners an enjoyable ride due to its handling prowess in a wide range of driving conditions, with many drivers eager to put this claim to the test. MANN-FILTER FRECIOUSPLUS

Providing clean air in the vehicle cabin

Around the world, more and more people are suffering from the effects of polluted air. This poses a risk not just outdoors in places with a lot of traffic, but also in indoor areas. According to a study by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), air pollution can actually be two to five times higher there than outdoors. In vehicle cabins, the situation is comparable, says MANN-FILTER. “People spend the majority of their time indoors. It doesn’t matter whether it’s at home, at school, at work or in vehicles,” MANN+HUMMEL Vice President Engineering Filter Elements, Martin Klein, said. “Particulate matter, bacteria, harmful gases, pollen and allergens are present in buildings as well as in vehicles. The only difference is what type they are, whether they come from the outside or are present in or originate from the interior.” In the vehicle, cabin air filters ensure drivers and passengers breathe in as little as possible of it. Like the MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus, for example, which reliably filters particulate matter and harmful gases from the vehicle air. Until now, polluted air was only cleaned at a few (traffic) hotspots around the world with stationary filter columns from MANN+HUMMEL. The high levels of nitrogen dioxide and particulate pollution in road traffic enters the car interior through the ventilation system along with the outside air, endangering the health of the driver and passengers. MANN+HUMMEL has therefore been offering highly efficient cabin air filters for clean air in vehicles for many decades. These are available in the automotive aftermarket as the MANN-FILTER and are used in vehicles with every kind of drive system. Highest filter quality thanks to biofunctional coating

One of these highly efficient cabin air filters is the innovative MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus. Its biofunctional coating binds allergens, filters viruses and prevents the growth of bacteria and moulds in the vehicle cabin. It also almost completely separates particulate matter containing particles with aerodynamic diameters of less than 2.5 micrometers (PM 2.5). These particles are approximately 30 to 40 times smaller than the width of a human hair and can penetrate deep into the lungs. Ultrafine particles can even enter the bloodstream via the pulmonary alveoli and can cause respiratory diseases and cancer. For a cabin filter to function reliably, it must be replaced once a year or every 15,000 kilometers. “We recommend that local experts regularly remind vehicle owners of the importance and benefits of the cabin air filter. Unfortunately, most car drivers are not aware of this,” Martin said. MANN-FILTER offers more than 100 different FreciousPlus cabin air filter types. For more information, visit www.frecious-plus.com

ZF RETURNS TO THE LIVE SCENE WITH ITS LATEST PRODUCT OFFERINGS

Global technology company ZF recently showcased its newest products in Brisbane

After a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, ZF Services Australia has re-emerged on the live expo scene with two simultaneous showcases presented at the Brisbane Truck Show and Civil Construction Field Days. “It’s fantastic that ZF Services Australia has returned to the live expo space, and to successfully display at two concurrent events is a credit to everyone within the organisation,” ZF Services Australia Managing Director, Mark Lowe, said. More than 31,000 visitors made their way to the Brisbane Truck Show over four days to experience the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest transport gathering. ZF showcased its latest products with an emphasis on the ZF TraXon transmission—the world’s first modular truck transmission. ZF describes the advanced design as “futureproofed” with GPS-based connectivity and optional predictive maintenance functions. Speaking on this live event, Mark stated, “The Brisbane Truck Show is world renowned as an essential platform for the industry to meet, and for ZF, it was a prime opportunity to present new products and brands to the market. This included a preview of the new TRW Commercial Vehicle brake pad range, which will be launched locally later in the year, as well as the first time for the WABCO brand to be presented within the ZF family.” Mark also spoke about ZF’s presentation at the Civil Construction Field Days, calling it a “prime occasion to showcase our services and products, and demonstrate our commitment to an everimportant area for the company.” He went on to say, “Outside of showcasing our repair capabilities and promoting our outstanding local workshop capabilities over the three days of the event, it was a tremendous opportunity to make contact with a wide range of leaders in that field.” This event was also held in Brisbane, and this year’s showcase was the first time ZF displayed its service offering in the Off-Highway segment. At both events, ZF highlighted its Australianbased workshop offering and remanufactured transmissions. ZF says that it uses between 50 and 90 percent less material in its remanufacturing process compared to the production of equivalent new units. This cuts CO2 emissions by about 90 percent and reduces manufacturing energy consumption. Further information on ZF’s product and workshop service is available through zf.com/au or by calling 1800 ZF SALES (1800 93 72537).

GATOR GTKPRO2

A 4G LTE GPS Tracking System

If you are a 4x4 enthusiast, one of the biggest fears you probably have is losing your pride and joy. There are plenty of options available to deter theft, including alarm systems and kill switches, but what happens when the thief bypasses these measures? Once your vehicle is gone, often it is parted out and never to be seen again – this is why GPS Tracking Systems have become an extremely popular security choice for 4x4 owners. GPS Trackers allow you to view exactly where your vehicle is, in real-time. They can also easily be hidden virtually anywhere in the vehicle, so if someone steals your vehicle they may never find where the tracker has been installed. Gator has recently released the GTKPRO2, a 4G LTE Vehicle GPS Tracking System operating on an Australian Based Server. The system comes supplied with a SIM Card operating on the Telstra 4G M2M Network and with 30 days of tracking included, providing extensive coverage throughout Australia. The tracker also supports offline tracking, so if it loses 4G coverage it will save the GPS location data onto the module and upload it to the server once 4G coverage is re-established. The GTKPRO2 has a number of features that will help prevent and alert you if someone is trying to steal your vehicle: • Instant Vehicle Location Alerts: Geo-Fence

Zones, Predetermined Routes and Places can be set up so you receive an automatic real-time alert when the vehicle enters/exits a zone, deviates off a route or arrives/leaves a pinpoint location. • Tow-Away Detection: this feature will detect a sudden change in the vehicle angle while the ignition is off, for example, if the vehicle is being loaded onto a tow truck. The tracker will send an automatic alert to let you know the tow-away detection has been activated. • Remote Ignition Disable: an immobilisation circuit can be connected to the ignition in the vehicle. This enables remote ignition cut off when the vehicle is not in motion (ie. parked) via the tracking portal or smartphone app. • Battery Back Up: if the vehicle battery is disconnected this will prevent power going to the tracker. Fortunately, the GTKPRO2 has a built-in battery that will power the tracker for a short period of time so you can continue tracking its location. Those behind the product say that tracking your vehicle with Gator couldn’t be easier thanks to the Advanced Web Portal and Smartphone App. The Web Portal can be accessed from any device that has an internet connection and web browser, while the Smartphone App is available for iOS and Android Smartphones on the App Store and Play Store. ADRAD OFFERS COOLING SOLUTIONS FOR CLASSIC AUSSIE CARS

These radiators for classic cars are manufactured in Australia

Do you remember the times when Australian cars had bumper bars made from chromed metal and radiators were built from copper and brass? With the decline in local car manufacturing, the value of classic cars made in Australia like the Falcon, Torana, and Kingswood has increased considerably. Of course, the highest value is attained when a vehicle is kept as close to the original condition as possible. This can be a challenge for many car restorers as genuine spares or high-quality reproduction parts aren’t always easy to find. One company that car restorers may look to for Australian made radiators for classic cars is ADRAD. This company offers traditional copper brass construction and original replacement for classic cars, all manufactured in South Australia. ADRAD has been working in this space for decades and has developed a strong reputation for manufacturing radiators and cores to fit all kinds of vehicles and equipment. ADRAD says that its manufacturing team has a strong understanding of the technical intricacies of heat exchange products. The team applies these skills and knowledge to a range of classic car part numbers built using the original Natra tooling, which was used to manufacture OE parts in Australia over 50 years ago. This means that ADRAD’s radiators are true to the originals. ADRAD has a range of options to meet a variety of classic cooling needs for Aussie cars. The company offers high performance custom alloy radiators for older vehicles with enhanced engines to manage the extra heat load. Another option is using pressed alloy tanks and a black finish, which will combine an original look with modern cooling technology. Whether it’s made from copper, brass, steel or alloy and is used on the street, track, off-road, construction or mine site, ADRAD says that its experienced design and manufacturing team can help you keep your cool. For details on where to obtain ADRAD original cooling parts, call 1800 882 043 or visit www.adradradiators.com.au

BILSTEIN’S NEW AIR SUSPENSION MODULE COMPARED TO REMANUFACTURED PARTS

BILSTEIN says its B4 air suspension module is a better solution for repairs

Aftermarket air suspension modules are often used when a replacement is needed, but the quality of remanufactured parts can vary widely. The ones that have the lowest prices may not have the highest quality. BILSTEIN says that it has a solution for workshops that want to offer customers a repair in line with the current value of the vehicle without compromising driving performance, by using its new air suspension module. BILSTEIN has considerable experience in this space. In fact, the company developed the technology to production maturity together with Mercedes-Benz in 1997 for the S-Class W220. Many advances have been made in air suspension systems in the years since with BILSTEIN remaining at the forefront. BILSTEIN is OEM for various vehicle manufacturers, so it is very familiar with all aspects of the technology and does not have to go through the process of reconstructing it from scratch. This gives the company an advantage over other manufacturers that choose to offer remanufactured components to save money on production costs. BILSTEIN examined a remanufactured air suspension module they found on the internet. BILSTEIN discovered improperly replaced wear parts and a BILSTEIN shock absorber that was more than ten years old. The company cautions that manufacturers of remanufactured components often disable the electromagnetic control valve instead of replacing it. It also says that the shock absorbers are generally taken from the old part in their current condition with an untraceable mileage. This creates an unknown risk since the damping force can vary depending on wear. BILSTEIN’s answer to lower quality remanufactured parts is the BILSTEIN B4 air suspension module, which the company claims can often be less expensive than using original spare parts. With this part, cars drive like they did on the first day. Also, the company offers this module at a lower price without compromising on safety and comfort. The company offers detailed installation and product instructions as well as helpful videos on the YouTube channel “BILSTEIN technical.” BILSTEIN also provides interesting training courses free of charge, accessible virtually at www.workshop.bilstein.com/en/trainings-andcourses/ Technical support can also be reached at any time via technik@bilstein.de For more information visit www.bilstein.com

GREAT WHITES OFFERS A BIGGER AND BETTER DRIVING LIGHT

The 250 Series is designed to give improved visibility

Great Whites has been helping to light Australian highways and 4WD tracks for nearly 10 years. Now it is introducing its biggest light yet—the 250 Series. This round LED driving light has an impressive 250mm face. It’s been designed to provide more light and improved visibility in poor weather conditions, which means increased safety for longhaul truck drivers. Great Whites pointed out recent reports that have found that 38 percent of all fatal accidents occur at night and 14.6 percent of all road crash deaths involve articulated trucks or heavy rigid trucks. Visibility is one of the most important factors in keeping drivers safe. As an added safety feature, Great Whites has included an integrated amber bar and lights to help drivers see in poor conditions such as fog, dust and even grain on farms. This is the first Great Whites light to include this feature. “The 250 Series is designed to take pride of place on the country’s biggest vehicles, improving visibility in all conditions and lighting over 1km ahead with each pair,” says Luke Bolton, Merchandise Manager – Lighting. “These larger faced lights will reduce the need for so many forward-facing lights on trucks, with fewer, high powered driving lights doing the trick. Best of all, they don’t look out of place in front of huge radiators and chunky bull bars.” Each 250 Series light holds 24 high-powered LEDS capable of operating in both 12 and 24V vehicles. This light has 10,300 effective white lumens and 700 effective amber lumens. It can be purchased in a black or alloy finish to match with your vehicle. Lighting Product Manager, Barry Lillis, puts an emphasis on quality when it comes to driving lights. “There are much cheaper lights on the market, but they’re cheaper for a reason. When your livelihood depends on those lights working, they’re nothing you should scrape on,” he said. The 250 Series is included in the Great Whites Attack range along with the 170 Series, 220 Series and Bars to meet the lighting needs of long-haul truck drivers. Great Whites also offers a three-year warranty on every light in its Attack range. Visit www.greatwhites.com.au or your local NAPA Auto Parts for more information.

NEW X-TERRAIN PRODUCTS

A frontal protection range to suit the all-new D-Max X-terrain has been released by ECB

Included in the range from East Coast Bullbars (ECB) is an alloy bullbar which can accommodate a winch, or without, and a full range of Nudge Bars including ECB’s 76mm Nudge Bar, Series 2 Nudge Bar, and Type 8 Nudge Bar. The unique front profile of the X-Terrain required a separate designed range of the Nudge bars and Bullbar to allow for the addition of the front parking sensor. ECB says that thanks to its positioning as a leading Australian Bullbar manufacturer, its in-house R&D allows it to react quickly to updated design changes and upgrades in technology. ECB alloy products for the X-Terrain come as an addition to a full range of frontal protection products to suit the D-Max SX, LS-M, and LS-U released by ECB in 2020. All products are available in a variety of finishes, including ECB’s low maintenance powder coat finishes and signature mirror polished alloy finish. Weight is the enemy of any vehicle. ECB explains that a heavy steel bulbar can weigh over double of that of an ECB alloy bullbar, even though an ECB Bulbar offers the same level of protection to the vehicle and its occupants. In fact, ECB advises that adding an ECB alloy Big Tube Bar for the X-Terrain adds only 39kg to the vehicle. ECB cautions that adding a steel bullbar usually means an upgrade of the suspension, with the subsequent increase in the mass of the vehicle having a detrimental effect on available load capacity, handling, braking, and fuel consumption. Furthermore, it warns unnecessary weight over the front axle increases wear and tear on steering components and can also contribute to excess trye wear. Frontal Protection Products to suit the entire range of D-max are available now for order. ECB has been a manufacturer of alloy nudge bars and bullbars since 1971 and all of its products are manufactured in Australia to suit Australia’s harshest conditions. It says its products provide premium strength compared to steel bullbars while being up to 50 percent lighter in weight. Every East Coast Bullbar product is ADR compliant, airbag compatible, and covered by ECB’s exclusive lifetime warranty. For more information, please visit www.ecb.com.au

ROWE LUBRICANTS

Exclusively distributed across Australia via MotorActive

The nation’s oil and lubricants industry got even more high-tech recently with Rowe entering the Australian market for the first time. A renowned European automotive player, Rowe was established in Germany 25 years ago with its products reportedly now used in one out of every nine cars on German roads. Available in over 90 countries globally, MotorActive has exclusive distribution rights in Australia. Specialising in driveline lubricants, Rowe’s Australian offering covers transmission, differential, and gear oils. Rounding-out the competitive range is a small number of engine oils, including specialty racing products. Rowe says change intervals for driveline lubricants are generally quite long (if specified at all by the vehicle manufacturer), with oil changes typically performed every few years. Knowing this, reliable performance and extended durability were Rowe’s top priorities when formulating these lubricants. As such, great importance has been given to the raw materials, to ensure optimum performance and extraordinary wear protection for the entirety of even the longest service cycle. With modern transmissions requiring highly specialised and specifically engineered lubricants, Rowe, via its race team Rowe Racing, uses its motorsport program like a ‘driving laboratory’ to test and enhance its product’s performance attributes. Leading the way in oil development, the team won both the VLN 24 Hours of Nürburgring and 24 Hours of Spa, two of the world’s toughest races, in 2020. In addition to this, Rowe says its lubricants, whether they be driveline, hydraulic and steering, engine oil or racing products, are designed to meet and exceed manufacturer specifications. “Rowe’s commitment and passion, along with its focus on quality, performance, long-term customer relationships and innovation, coupled with their sustainability programs, make them a really good fit for us,” MotorActive Managing Director, Bruce Morrison, said. “With Rowe, we saw the opportunity to provide the market with a quality range of driveline oils to complement the existing products we already offer workshops nationally. “Purchasing Rowe Oils and lubricants via MotorActive will give our customers a high-tech, high quality oil for a competitive price, along with the great customer service that we’ve become renowned for in the industry.” The German-made products, suitable for European and prestige vehicles, can be ordered in one, five and twenty litre sizes and are available now through MotorActive. 3D METAL PRINTING

Bringing innovation to the automotive industry

Extensive experience with 3D metal printing in the automotive industry has meant SLM Solutions Group AG understands the requirements of vehicle part production. Audi first began using an SLM Machine to produce prototypes, and then moved to special application areas with redesigns and producing parts on demand. Using the latest 700W SLM laser system, Audi now produces parts for the Audi W12 engine. High performance racing vehicles are leveraging the opportunities 3D metal printing provides. “SLM Solutions is a powerful, long-term strategic partner for Divergent 3D, working with us to provide 3D metal printing hardware and software specific to the Divergent Adaptive Production System,” Divergent Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Czinger, said. “We believe that this will transform the way vehicle structures are designed, engineered, manufactured and assembled.” An example of Kevin’s unique design is in the front section of the Divergent3D. Complex geometry applied during the design phase of a part for the Bugatti Chiron meant a problem of dealing with extremely high temperatures was overcome. Using an SLM 280 twin laser, water-cooling channels were built directly onto a bracket serving as an active heat shield to the motor’s electric pump, a solution not possible using traditional production techniques. Volumetrically, the largest functional titanium component built was the Bugatti Brake Caliper. Constructed using Ti6AL4V in an SLM 500 multilaser machine, tests conducted on the final product showed significant achievements both in a tensile strength of 1,250 n/mm and material density over 99.7 percent. The latest news comes from Porsche where a new E-Drive housing required innovative design topology. Lattice structures were optimised to reduce weight, functional cooling channels integrated, and a higher part stiffness achieved through specific build techniques. The E-Drive housing was built using SLM Solutions’ latest machine, the NXG XII 600. Designed specifically for series production of parts this recently released laser system will greatly reduce dependence on part warehousing and issues associated with logistics and supply. “A number of SLM Solutions systems are in operation in Australia,” John Grace, the Managing Director of SLM supplier Raymax Applications Pty Ltd, said. “We would like to see the automotive parts industry take up the challenges of 3D printing for local part supply or even export to overseas vehicle manufacturers. We believe this is an opportunity for Australian businesses that is not to be missed.” For more information, visit www.raymax.com.au
