Batteries & Charging: Power up with batteries and chargers
BATTERY WORLD HELPS DRIVERS CHARGE AHEAD
The company stocks a range of Century products to assist drivers
Call outs for flat car batteries surged during the pandemic as vehicles were left idle, and now with winter well and truly here, cars are at greater risk of battery failure. At colder temperatures, a battery’s ability to provide sufficient power to start and run a vehicle is reduced. While you might be saving petrol by leaving your car unused, you’re actually reducing your battery’s performance and causing premature battery failure. Battery World encourages drivers to take an effort not to have a ‘set and forget’ mindset and become accustomed to monitoring your battery, stating that an excellent way to do so is by getting a battery monitor. Century BM12V Battery Monitor
Battery World says the Century BM12V Battery Monitor is the easiest way to keep track of your battery’s state of charge and your vehicle’s starting and charging systems. The BM12V helps prevent vehicle breakdown by transmitting real time battery data to your smartphone. Easy to set up push notifications will warn you about low battery voltage and record your battery’s daily voltage levels to help identify potential issues. Through the App you are able to run vehicle crank tests and automatically record your trip duration. Backed with a 24-month warranty, the BM12V can be used for cars, 4x4s, trucks, caravans, motorcycles, marine and watercrafts, and lawn and garden maintenance vehicles. Century 12V 12A Battery Charger
If you are in need of a charger, Century’s 12V 12A Battery Charger will charge 12V conventional lead acid batteries in cars, 4x4s and SUVs, lawn and garden equipment, trucks, caravans and RVs and marine vehicles. This charger incorporates a unique and patented rejuvenation technology and high voltage equalising and peak pulse reconditioning to repair heavily discharged batteries and will activate from as low as 3V. Other inclusions include eco-power mode, for ultra-low power consumption, and safety timers, to detect faults and prevent overcharging. Battery World says it is Australia’s leading battery retailer with over 20 years in operations and 111 stores nationwide. Battery World is a franchise network owned by Century Yuasa Batteries, Australia’s only and largest battery manufacturer. The stores stock over 14,000 products from small coin cell and AAA batteries to large truck batteries. For more information, visit www.batteryworld.com.au or head into your local Battery World store.
PYLONTECH RV12100 BATTERY
Master Instruments says its Pylontech RV12100 battery brings a level of control not seen by a stand-alone deep cycle battery before. In the world of battery storage in recreational markets, many people have already moved from the once traditional lead acid format to rechargeable lithium solutions. Lithium Iron Phosphate, otherwise known as LiFePO4 or LFP, provides many benefits over lead acid variants which ultimately provides for a better total cost of ownership. Weight savings mean better fuel economy and an influence on towing ability, while greater usable capacity allows for longer run-times and deeper discharges without sacrificing service life. At the same time, no gassing means the batteries can be housed in living areas. The Pylontech RV12100 is a battery designed to excel in the 4x4 and recreational market thanks to some key attributes, explains Master Instruments. This 12.8V battery has a 100Ah capacity rating in the popular NS70 footprint, allowing housing in existing battery boxes and other storage locations while being able to be mounted in any orientation. Master Instruments says it is the very clear interface present on the top of the battery that sets it apart from the rest. A simple On/Off button allows you to isolate the battery when not in use, and the clear LED State of Charge indicator provides a quick and easy visual capacity check to keep you in the know. Being able to isolate the batteries when not in use means your battery is ready to go the next time you venture out – eliminating self-discharge concerns. Pylontech has also built in an auto-balancing function between each battery that allows you to expand your system size. The RV12100 can be used in up to 2S (two in series – 24V 100Ah), or 8P (eight in parallel – 12V 800Ah) configurations. This flexibility allows you to easily expand your battery system size as your power requirements grow. If you have not heard of Pylontech before, Master Instruments says that will likely be because Pylontech have been more active in the low voltage HESS and SME Energy Storage Solution markets, with a huge following around the world. Master Instruments says Pylontech are LiFePO4 specialists with a focus on performance and safety. It says by being a vertically integrated company, Pylontech makes its products from the ground up so that every part of the build integrates seamlessly. Further, Pylontech is reportedly constantly developing new solutions, with two exciting new products for the 4x4 and recreational market due to drop in the very near future. If you are considering a lithium storage solution for your 4x4, caravan or boat, Master Instruments recommends that you check out the Pylontech RV12100 at your nearest battery retailer. WHY DO YOU NEED A CAR BATTERY TESTER?
In this article, AutoTest takes a look at the challenges of battery testing and offers a solution
The electric charge your battery carries will not last a century – it can only carry so much electric charge for a specified amount of time and sooner or later it will discharge. In most cases, it is quite difficult to tell how much electric charge you have left. AutoTest explains that state-of-health is not measured, but instead is estimated based on available symptoms. It says that when testing a battery and trying to determine the state of health you must consider capacity (ability to store energy), internal resistance (ability to deliver current) and selfdischarge (cell integrity and health). The top indicator of a battery’s health is capacity (energy storage). A new battery should deliver 100 percent of the rated capacity. This means a 10Ah pack should deliver ten amps for one hour, so if the battery fails to perform after 20 minutes, then the capacity is only 33 percent. Lead acid starts at about 85 percent and increases in capacity through use before the long and gradual decrease begins, whereas Lithium-ion starts at peak and begins its decline immediately, but at a very slow pace. Knowing when to replace a battery is difficult, as battery problems only become apparent with increased breakdowns, which may be caused by a lack of battery maintenance. AutoTest says more than 40 percent of all roadside car failures are battery-related, and 30 percent involve either a discharged or defective battery. Additionally, it says only a few starter batteries reach the average age of five years and the most common reason for battery failure is undercharge or sulfation. Further, failure during the warranty period is uncommon, with driving habits the main culprits. The challenge of battery testing
AutoTest says the key problem lies in the difficulty of testing batteries, and this applies to repair shops, retail outlets, and service garages. It states there is a significant shortfall in a reliable method of estimating the state-of-charge, which is based mostly on voltage and charge counting. Assessing capacity is the leading health indicator of a battery and measuring the open circuit voltage and checking the internal resistance do not provide conclusive evidence of battery stateof-health. While a dead battery is easy to check and most testers are 100 percent accurate, the challenge comes in evaluating a battery in the 80–100 percent performance range while in use. AutoTest says most service and repair workshops struggle to introduce good battery test procedures, but says this is where its Battery System tester can assist.
The AutoTest BST-380 Battery System Tester
The AutoTest BST-380 Battery System Tester uses the adjustable load test to decide whether a battery is still usable or needs to be replaced. These testers measure the voltage drop when a voltage load that is half the battery’s CCA rating is used. The load is applied for about 15 seconds and the voltage drop is measured. If the drop reading does not fall below 9.6 volts, then the battery is ideally conditioned, and is therefore, considered good. AutoTest explains that it not only gives a complete view of battery health, but is a conveniently portable, easy to use battery analysis tool designed for automotive service, fleet maintenance and breakdown assist diagnostic use which takes the guess work out of battery diagnosis and alerting you to replace batteries before they fail. The Battery System Tester is a professional quality unit that tests all 12V auto batteries, including new auxiliary batteries for hybrids. It uses advanced conductance testing technology to easily, quickly and accurately measure the actual cold cranking amps capability of the vehicle starting battery, the health of the battery itself, and common faults in the vehicle starting system and charging system. It can help maintenance personnel to identify problems quickly and accurately, thus leading to efficient vehicle repair. Key AutoTest Battery System Tester features and benefits:
• User friendly • Built in Printer for an instant printout • Test 12V/24V/30V batteries • 100-2000 CCA (cold cranking amps) • Polarity Reverse Protection • Testing standards include a majority of the world’s battery standards, CCa, BCi, Ca, mCa,
JiS, Din, ieC, en, Sae and G • Stores 100 test results • In-built real time clocks • Registered Australian Made and Owned Test functions include:

BATTERY HEALTH IS CRITICAL NO MATTER THE WEATHER
Hot Summer weather can actually be the start of many Winter battery problems
Batteries can be damaged by high temperatures in Summer when heat is generated under the bonnet and the car is still using lots of functions that can heavily drain the battery, like running air conditioning. However, during Summer the warmth in the surrounding air can help the battery function well. It is then not until the cold weather strikes you realise you have a problem. “Customers often get a false sense of security as an undercharged battery will still be able to start the car in warmer months,” CTEK Director of Sales and Marketing, Robert Briggs, said. “When temperatures drop, the number of flat batteries increases with customers often inconvenienced and frustrated by their last service through no fault of the technician. “The cold weather can also mean that vehicle alternators and starter motors are at risk of premature failure if the battery isn’t properly charged. This is often not understood by the motorist who is often irritated that the car suddenly won’t start. “Every time the vehicle is started, 150 – 350A is drawn from the battery. If motorists are only making a small trip, particularly with the recent restrictions in Melbourne, the alternator won’t have the time to replace the draw on the battery. “Over multiple short trips the charge within the battery will become lower and lower, placing it at risk of sulphation or even worse, failure.” To avoid customer frustration, CTEK recommends adding a battery health check on top of a vehicle’s normal servicing. Complemented by a battery charger, such as the CTEK PRO25S, workshops can test, charge and condition a vehicle’s battery during other vehicle work. CTEK recommends that for each vehicle that enters the workshop, the battery should be tested with a professional battery tester, like the CTEK PRO Battery Tester, and a report printed. If the battery voltage is below 12.6 volts, this is a critical voltage, and the workshop should ring the customer and recommend a battery service at an additional charge. Step two is to charge the customer’s battery using a professional battery charger like the CTEK PRO25S. In some cases, the battery will need to be replaced meaning more revenue for workshops, and most importantly, customer satisfaction. When the customer returns to the workshop, CTEK advises showing them the printed report from the professional battery tester both before and after the battery charge to prove the voltage has increased. By doing this, workshops can increase their bottom line while delighting customers with a comprehensive service. The CTEK PRO25S starts from AU $600 RRP, and is available to purchase from Repco stores nationwide. For more information, visit www.ctek.com

NEW UNDER-BONNET BATTERY CONDITIONER
ANBI launches another innovative product
Following the successful launch of its innovative negative battery isolator switch, the ANBI Switch, the team at Digital Pulse Systems is excited to announce the launch of its new under-bonnet battery conditioner, the ANBI Battery Conditioner. The all-new ANBI Battery Conditioner transmits a high frequency digital pulse within the battery. These digital pulse frequencies break down the sulphates in the battery, extending battery life and increasing battery reliability. “Battery conditioner technology has been around for more than a decade, and in the more recent past, the technology has been integrated into a wide variety of battery chargers,”, General Manager, Digital Pulse Systems, Theo Brown said. “But of course, this only works if the battery in on-charge. Our all new, under-bonnet battery conditioner works to reduce sulphates when-ever the vehicle is in use.” Unlike other under-bonnet battery conditioners, the ANBI Battery Conditioner features a voltage cut-out that stops the unit drawing power when the vehicle is not in use. “The biggest issue with under-bonnet battery conditioners to-date is that when the vehicle is idle, they continue to draw battery power, which will run the battery flat quite quickly,” Theo explained. “After intensive testing, we added a voltage cut out to the ANBI Battery Conditioner that removes the issue completely.” The main cause of battery failure is sulphates accumulating on the battery plates. Sulphate accumulation occurs when lead sulphates form on the battery plates during the normal recharge/ discharge cycles. Over time this sulphate builds up, lowering the batteries performance until the battery runs flat. With a recommended retail price of only $79.50, the ANBI Battery Conditioner comes in at about half the cost of a new battery. Representing great value when you consider that testing has shown it can extend battery life by up to three times. “Installing the ANBI Battery Conditioner will revive the battery that is low, and bring it up to an efficiency with extended battery life,” Theo explained. The ANBI Battery Conditioner can also resuscitate a low battery, when recharging, with the ANBI Battery Conditioner, installed on the battery, at time of charging. “Testing has proved that installing the ANBI Battery Conditioner onto the terminal of a flat battery prior to charging, can restore battery efficiency to approximately 80 percent,” Theo said. The all-new ANBI Battery Conditioner has been tested to ensure it meets all international automotive specifications, proving that it will deliver outstanding performance, even in the most extreme conditions. The ANBI Battery Conditioner is suitable for a broad range of applications including automotive, marine, agricultural and industrial equipment. “The ANBI Battery Conditioner provides automotive workshops, tyre dealers and automotive electricians with an additional source of revenue that will improve profitability and increase customer satisfaction,” Theo said. “Keeping the ANBI Battery Conditioner in stock and recommending it to customers is a fantastic way to increase sales.” To find out more about how stocking and recommending the ANBI Battery Conditioner can increase the profitability of your business, visit www.anbiswitch.com.au or call 1800 290 812 for trade enquiries.
