Tyres & Wheels: The knowledge you need to keep your customers’ tyres and wheels safe

UNIQUE TPMS

From Burg Design

Whether you are on or off-road, a TPMS is a very important safety feature which is classed as a ‘must have’ accessory for many drivers. Burg Design says the new PARKSAFE Tymate TPMS system comes with all the features you will ever need for your off-road excursion into all types of conditions. It says Tymate gives you clear visible and audible alerts for puncture, low pressures, high pressures, fast leakage and overheating temperatures. Burg Design says a very special feature of the Tymate system is the unique flow-through external sensors with their own valve caps, which allow the user to very easily reduce or increase the pressures without having to remove the sensors.

Key features and benefits:

• Real time display of temperatures and pressures on all tyres • External flow-through valve cap sensors for easy installation • Light weight, compact, anti-theft waterproof sensors • Accurate pressure display readings 0 to 188

PSI on up to 17 wheels, including spare tyre • Auto alerts + or – 25 percent of your personal settings • User friendly, easy to set up and easy to maintain • Kit includes everything you need to set up such as rechargeable display, universal mounting bracket, four sensors, signal repeater for trailers, USB charging cable, security locking tool set, spare parts • Two-year Australian warranty and technical support PARKSAFE Tymate also offers compact non flow-through sensors if your valve stems are protruding too close to the edge of wheel rims. SPEEDPLATE EBA PRO

This Finger Plate Wheel Balancing Mounting Solution is available from Repco

Repco says it is important to note that “70 percent of wheel balancing accuracy depends on the clamping tools.” It says that without the correct clamping tools, large remount errors are almost a certainty. Remount errors occur when a wheel is balanced to 0-0, removed from the balancing machine, remounted, and balanced again. If the balancer at this point shows a new unbalance, meaning it’s asking for more wheel weights to be added, Repco says the problem is either a worn or incorrect choice of clamping tool. Repco says it is an industry accepted fact that at least 70 percent of wheel balancing accuracy depends on the clamping tools rather than the wheel balancer itself. It says to achieve optimum balancing results and a smooth riding vehicle, it is necessary to centre and torque the wheel onto the balancing machine in the same manner the wheel is mounted onto the vehicle. Repco says that when using the SpeedPlate EBA Pro you need just to rotate one gear, and the other gears will follow along, stating it is fast, easy, and comfortable. Locking the chosen bolt pattern (PCD) in place is fully automatic through an innovative wave spring design; while wheel balancing accuracy is optimised through the use of interchangeable Torque Tips, which mirror the shape of lug nuts and therefore fit steel and alloy wheels correctly. Only the Torque Tips touch the wheel during the balancing process. Repco explains that the SpeedPlate EBA Pro is made in the USA to provide the best possible balancing accuracy, fantastic speed of operation, incredible durability, and all without the need for maintenance. HOLTS TYREWELD EMERGENCY PUNCTURE REPAIR

For over 100 years, Holts’ mission has been to keep people driving

Holts says its range of products has been designed and developed to solve everyday problems encountered by drivers, to get them back on the road. A flat tyre is an unexpected inconvenience and common nuisance to drivers and can happen anywhere at any time. Changing a flat on the side of the road is not only a nuisance, but can also be a dangerous task; and with new-car manufacturers opting for more boot space instead of a spare, for some drivers, a tyre change is not an option at all. Holts says it has the answer with its Holts Tyreweld Emergency Puncture Repair product. A “no tools necessary” option, Holts explains that its Tyreweld product has a unique twist button, automatic transfer system unlike other aftermarket tyre repair products. By simply attaching the end of the tube to the tyre valve and twisting the red button, the driver can move away from the roadside, whilst the Holts Tyreweld goes to work, dispersing into the tyre in seconds and working instantly by coating the inside of the tyre to seal the puncture. Holts explains that the gas inside the can inflates the tyre, making it possible to drive on immediately. The temporary repair system is sufficient in getting the vehicle to the tyre shop for a full repair; withstanding a maximum speed of 80kph. Holts Tyreweld is a water-based rubber solution that can repair punctures up to 5mm in diameter, which accounts for approximately 95 percent of punctures. As it is a water-based rubber solution, Holts Tyreweld is not toxic; is easily washed or wiped away and is non-damaging to rims and tyres; and can easily be disposed of by tyre repair shops, as it is not hazardous or flammable. Taking up much less space than a spare tyre, Holts Tyreweld can be safely stored inside the vehicle in both hot and cold weather, as the Tyreweld cans are made from one piece of aluminium, and can withstand temperatures of up to 97°C. When cold weather is at play, Tyreweld will work in temperatures as low as -10°C. Holts says that Tyreweld is compatible with all Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems and will not cause damage. The Tyreweld Emergency Puncture Repair covers tyre sizes for small cars, 2WD and 4WD vehicles, with three different sized cans. ZF JOINS FORCES WITH GOODYEAR

To offer enhanced tyre and fleet management solutions for commercial vehicles

ZF has entered a long-term agreement with Goodyear, bringing together ZF’s advanced Transics-branded, Fleet Management Solutions (FMS) and Goodyear’s high performing tyre portfolio and mobility solutions. Initially, ZF and Goodyear will offer European commercial vehicle fleets an integrated suite of fleet and tyre management applications supporting mixed and multi-brand fleets. Through an interoperable and flexible solution, based on a single telematics box, TXTRAILERPULSE, fleets can access the services and support of both companies, including Goodyear tyre data and full access to ZF’s Transics FMS solutions, TX-TRAILERFIT and TXCONNECT. “ZF’s collaboration with Goodyear harnesses the expertise and extensive capabilities of two industry-leaders behind a shared conviction to offer European fleets and trailer builders the benefits of a one-stop Fleet Management Solution,” said Peter Bal, Business Leader – Digital Customer Services, EMEA with ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Control System division. “Our ability to supply an integrated solution, with reduced hardware investment, means Europe’s commercial fleets can benefit from simplified operations as they seek to gain further efficiency, enhance safety and improve cargo security. The system will also help fleets meet upcoming EU GSR5 regulations which require HCVs to be equipped with TPMS progressively from July 2022.” “Together with ZF, we will deliver a major stepchange to further drive results for transportation, logistics, fleet operators and manufacturers,” Goodyear Vice President, Commercial Europe, Grégory Boucharlat, said. “Providing strong differentiation with interoperable proactive tyre and vehicle management solutions and intelligent services, we continue to deliver the very latest, future-proof and customised support for our customers right across Europe.” To provide fleets with an integrated Fleet and Tyre Management Solution, ZF and Goodyear will leverage real-time data generated from all makes of Trailer Braking Systems (T-EBS) and tyre sensors. This will equip fleet operators and drivers with a wide range of actionable insights and smart functions. These are designed to optimise vehicle park usage while also helping to avoid road accidents and mitigate unscheduled vehicle downtime. Addressing market demand for more open and seamlessly integrated FMS, the collaboration will provide fleets with the combined benefits of both ZF’s fleet management services and Goodyear’s high performing commercial vehicle tyre portfolio. With a clear focus on vehicle safety, the interoperable solution will enable fleets and trailer builders to comply with the EU General Safety Regulation mandated advanced safety functions which come into effect from July 2022. Providing advanced tyre and trailer operating health insights, as well as enhanced driver safety monitoring, the collaboration will also help significantly reduce the 200,000 roadside incidents reported each year in the EU. Supporting greener mobility, the rich, realtime data obtained from the trailer’s onboard systems and tyres, will enable fleets to optimise vehicle usage, reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. The partners estimate that the collaboration could realise an emissions reduction of up to two tons of CO2 per connected trailer. In addition to customers being free to select either company as their supplier, the modular and extendable total mobility offer means they only need to buy the functionalities required and can upgrade, if additional services are required later. Simplifying the implementation of operational management systems for fleets, it will provide a rich, integrated data set without the complexity of operating multi-vendor systems as well as significantly reducing installation times. Supporting this comprehensive range of services, ZF and Goodyear will offer strong pan-European support for fleets. For more from ZF, visit www.zf.com

PROMATA’S NEW TYRE PRESSURE MONITOR

The “best-selling” Mata2E was launched earlier this year

At the start of 2021, Promata Automotive launched Mata2E, the company’s latest tyre pressure monitor innovation and successor to Promata’s classic 10-sensor 4WD TPMS (Mata1E). Promata says the Mata2E is a solid product that is capable of monitoring car and caravan tyres and two spare tyres, with automatic hook-drop function. It is able to monitor pressures from 0~99 PSI with a large solar-powered LCD display and IP67 external sensors. Compared to its predecessor, the Mata2E has an improved display with a small sunshade that gives the LCD screen more heat-protection, a gorgeous stream-lined teardrop-style design, and luxurious carbon fiber that prevents sun glare and also matches the interior of the dashboard. Promata says that its Mata2E system has seen more demand than Mata1E and has sold out twice in the five months that it has been available. Mata2E kit comes with four external sensors for DIY installation. These lightweight external sensors only weigh nine grams and do not require tyre balancing when installed. Promata says the entire process is as simple as installing the external sensors on the tyre valves and sitting the display on the dashboard. For those who do not like clutter on the dash, also available is the 4WD TPMS MataC. Additional sensors can be purchased later to upgrade the system to 10 sensors (including up to two spare tyres.) Moreover, users can completely customise the high/low pressure settings per axle (from seven psi to 99 psi), which makes it great for recreational vehicles. For very rough journeys, the Mata2E is also compatible with internal sensors. For this reason, mix-and-match configurations are also popular, such as four internal for car and four internal for the caravan. For a full list of Mata2E features including solar battery life for one charge and replaceable sensor battery, visit www.promata.com.au/product/mata2e

MICKEY THOMPSON TYRES

Available from Rocket Industries

Rocket Industries says Mickey Thompson Tyres are synonymous with breaking records and are one of the most trusted motorsport tyre brands in the world. M/T manufacture a large range of tyres for street and racing applications to suit all styles of vehicles, with the range including (but not limited to) the following. ET Street S/S

A street tyre that can be driven on the track, the ET Street S/S from Mickey Thompson is a high performance street to strip tyre with radial construction, R2 compound and more; offering 15- to 20-inch fitments. It has an equivalent tread void as the ET Street Radial II, redistributed for improved hydroplane resistance while providing plenty of tread contact for excellent dry traction. Rocket Industries says the proven R2 compound is the same proven compound used on the quickest “drag radials” on the planet and provides superior traction at the strip with little or no burnout required; while the tyre’s tubeless construction provides leak-free seal without the expense and hassle of tubes. ET Street R

A drag tyre that can be driven on the street, the ET Street R from Mickey Thompson is a D.O.T street legal (in America) drag tyre with proven race compounds and incredible traction. Rocket Industries explains that the minimal tread void of this tyre provides excellent tread-contact. It is available in most popular sizes and its tubeless construction provides leak-free seal without the expense and hassle of tubes. Sportsman S/T

Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T tyres are designed for original muscle car owners demanding performance, quality and style. Available with optional raised white letters or a black sidewall with a low-profile look, the tyre provides the wide all season performance handling muscle car drivers demand. It is available in popular sizes for muscle cars and features a flat tread profile for both handling and long tread life as well as radial construction for a smooth ride and long mileage. Sportsman S/R

Rocket Industries says the Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R is the “undisputed classic hot rod tyre.” The Sportsman S/R radial is built in Mickey Thompson’s unique “flamed” tread pattern which provides improved wet traction, and the extra wide rears with matching skinny fronts reportedly make for the best combination available. The matching front and rear tread pattern allows for staggered fitments. Rocket Industries explains that the radial construction of these tyres provides higher mileage and a smooth ride. Custom sizes are available for street rods and muscle cars, as are tyres for 15-, 17-, 18-, and 20-inch wheel diameters. BRIDGESTONE CONTINUES RECORD STREAK

The company has again been named as Australia and New Zealand’s most trusted tyre brand

Bridgestone has retained its title of both Australia’s and New Zealand’s Most Trusted Tyre Brand in the annual Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Brands survey. The Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Brands survey is conducted annually by Catalyst Research, asking more than 3,000 Australians and 1,600 New Zealanders to rank brands across more than 70 product and service categories. This year marks the eighth straight year Bridgestone has won the coveted award in Australia, making it the only brand to have won the tyres category since it was introduced in 2014. For Bridgestone New Zealand, 2021 marked the fifth consecutive victory, with Firestone recording its fifth straight year as the highly commended brand. Since the tyre category was introduced in New Zealand in 2015, Bridgestone and Firestone are the only brands to have won the accolade, with Firestone winning the first two years and Bridgestone every year since 2017. According to Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand Managing Director, Stephen Roche, maintaining trust is key to Bridgestone’s future business direction. “We’re proud to be named both Australia’s and New Zealand’s Most Trusted Tyre Brand again in 2021, especially in a year where trust has proven to be more important than ever,” Stephen said. “To win this award eight times in Australia and five times in New Zealand highlights that Bridgestone understands the needs of motorists. “By providing safe, reliable and quality tyres they can depend on, it forms the platform for how we will continue to be the trusted source of tyres and automotive solutions into the future.” Last year, Bridgestone announced its global midlong term business strategy, building on its core of being a trusted tyre supplier and becoming a leader in mobility solutions, living up to the new global tagline of ‘Solutions for your Journey.’ For Australia and New Zealand, this means an increased focus on Bridgestone’s network of stores and an ongoing commitment to understanding customers’ needs and providing solutions to meet the evolving needs of the industry. “We remain committed to identifying the needs of customers, and delivering solutions that meet these needs and advance mobility,” Stephen said. “Australians and New Zealanders have an undeniable affinity with our brand, and we’re committed to strengthening their trust in us into the future by continuing to provide tyres, services and solutions they can put their trust in, meeting customers’ needs and advancing our industry.” For more information, visit www.bridgestone.com.au

RPM ACQUIRES EAST COAST TYRE WHOLESALERS

This is RPM’s third acquisition since securing capital in January 2021

The RPM Automotive Group has established itself as a leader in the Australian Automotive Aftermarket. The group includes a range of businesses that address everything from mechanical repairs to motorsport apparel and safety equipment. Now RPM is announcing a new addition with the acquisition of East Coast Tyre Wholesalers (ECTW). This Sydney-based tyre and wheel importer already has a nationwide distribution network in place. The Australia-owned company has been trading for over 13 years. RPM plans to integrate the business into its existing RPM Wheels and Tyres division. The asset purchase agreement totals $2.6 million with 67.5 percent in cash and 32.5 percent in equity. The acquisition will be effective September 1, 2021, and ECTW will retain its management team. RPM is excited about the benefits of adding ECTW to its roster. This includes expanding RPM’s presence in New South Wales. The RPM Wheels and Tyres Division will now have operations that essentially cover the East Coast of Australia. ECTW is also the exclusive distributor of several Passenger Tyre Brands, including Pace, Compasal and Zeta Truck Tyres. RPM states that ECTW is able to supply Passenger Tyres from 12 inch to 22 inch in size, with a full range of PCR, UHP, 4WD, TBR and Run-flat Tyres. RPM is also looking at potential revenue synergies from cross-pollinating customer-bases and crossselling both RPM’s and ECTW’s current product ranges. On the other hand, ECTW will benefit from the larger infrastructure and greater coverage that RPM offers. “I am delighted to welcome East Coast Tyre Wholesalers to the RPM fold. Our businesses are operationally aligned, often in parallel markets and tyre segments. We see attractive potential to add value and revenue to both businesses through cross-selling of products and tyre brands to different customer bases, as well as cost synergies as a result of the scale achieved,” RPM Chief Executive Officer, Clive Finkelstein, said. “This acquisition is funded from our recent capital raise and will be immediately earnings accretive. It is another example of our sustainable growth strategy designed to grow RPM into Australia’s leading business operating a diversity of brands across the transport and automotive aftermarket sectors.” ECTW is the company’s third acquisition following a successful round of capital raising in January 2021. RPM states that the acquisition of ECTW is strongly aligned with its goal of expanding the Group’s Wheels and Tyres wholesale and distribution platform. It’s also part of the company’s overall growth strategy with additional potential acquisitions on the horizon. RPM has stated that it remains on track to generate record results in FY21, with FY22 Group Revenue forecast to exceed $75 million. For more information visit www.rpmgroup.net.au

BURSON AUTO PARTS MAKES A BIG SPLASH

At the 2021 Goodyear Auto Care Conference

HOW TO CHOOSE WHEEL CARE PRODUCT

It is important to select the appropriate cleaner or polish for the finish on a car’s wheels

Command Auto Group says cleaning or polishing wheels is easy and can be done with a spray product, a polish and applicator, or using a quality foam power tool like Mothers PowerBall2, PowerBall Mini or PoweCone 360. Clearcoated painted and PVD

The most common wheel finish on modern factory wheels is a clear or coloured plasticised urethane, clear coat or paint with the same grade of coating that can mar or become dull from abuse, improper washing or neglect. When seen in bright sunlight, a rainbow hue or light scratches may be visible, indicating they may need to be polished. For this finish, Command Auto Group recommends that the Mothers Foaming Wheel and Tyre Cleaner spray and Mothers Plastic Polish or PowerPlastic are used. For added protection, it recommends these are followed with Mothers ceramic or wax products such as CMX Ceramic Spray Coating; California Gold, Speed, Ultimate Hybrid Spray Wax; or Pure Carnauba Wax Paste. Chrome Clad

A plastic cover with a chrome-look finish that is bonded to an aluminium or steel wheel. Generally a light tap with your finger will indicate a plasticlike dull sound, or you might see a tell-tale gap between where the cladding meets the edge of the rim. Chrome clad should be protected with a ceramic coating or wax product and it should only be polished only when necessary. Command Auto Group recommends that you use CMX Ceramic Spray Coating; California Gold Pure Brazilian Carnauba Wax; and California Gold or Speed Spray Wax products for protecting Chrome Clad wheels.

Chrome Plated

Chrome is easily identifiable by the mirror-like finish and is often a factory or dealer option on aluminium or steel wheels. It is also popular in the aftermarket. Command Auto Group says modern chrome plating isn’t quite as durable as those years ago, and so says regular application with quality modern formulations prevent possible damage to the surface. For this purpose, it recommends the following products: Mothers Pro Strength Chrome Wheel Cleaner; California Gold Chrome Polish; and California Gold All-Chrome. In keeping with the summer feel and local climate of this industry event, Burson Auto Parts also gave away 200 Burson Beach Bags complete with hat, water bottle and hand sanitiser to conference delegates. “This was an excellent conference held in an outstanding location. I am sure that all who took part enjoyed their visit to the far north coast of Queensland, particularly after the disrupted year that we have endured,” Burson Auto Parts General Manager – Sales, Richard Rindfleish, said. “We were delighted to be a Platinum sponsor and to have partnered with this growing and proactive automotive service and repair group.” For more from Burson Auto Parts, visit www.burson.com.au

Bare (polished) Aluminium and Billet

While this finish requires the most maintenance of any rim finish, Command Auto Group says the payoff is a brilliant shine. Aluminium is a relatively soft alloy that oxidises from exposure to the environment, dulling the finish over time. To ensure the finish isn’t coated, Command Auto Group recommends you simply rub a small amount of an aluminium or billet polish on the surface – it should immediately turn black (if it doesn’t, chances are the wheel is coated, so stop and use appropriate polish for clearcoated or painted wheels). When polishing aluminium, work in small sections to maintain a black buttery residue. It is important to keep the polish from drying, but if it does, simply add a little more polish and remove while wet to reveal a brilliant shine. Command Auto Group recommends the following products for this finish: Mothers Polished Aluminium Wheel Cleaner spray; Mothers Mag and Aluminium Polish; and Mothers California Gold Metal Polish. OMEGA WHEEL ARMS

Available from Shinn Fu Australia

The Omega Wheel Arm is designed to clamp to the arm of the lift for easy hanging of removed tyres from the vehicle. The Omega Wheel Arm not only helps reduce trip hazards in the shop but also aids in the prevention of back injuries from the constant bending of technicians while placing the tyre on the ground, as it allows you to hang tyres at core height with minimal twisting and bending over. The cuff is adjustable both horizontally and vertically, allowing the Wheel Arm to be used with most two and four posts lifts, says Shinn Fu Australia. Shinn Fu Australia says the Omega Wheel Arm is a great accessory to efficiently hold tyres on a vehicle lift arm. It explains that the Omega Wheel Arm allows mechanics to put on or take off a tyre, on each side of the lift arm from the vehicle, in an easily accessible manner. The bar can be folded up or sideways when not in use to save space. With the Omega Wheel Arm, you can avoid bending over to put down or pick up a tyre, with Shinn Fu Australia stating that the product makes tyre rotations and brake jobs a breeze. With a 180-degree positioning ball, it says it is easy to angle the bar to a desired position while two magnetic tool trays are included to keep your bolts for each wheel safe – you can simply place the trays on top. Omega Wheel Arms are sold as a set. For more information, visit www.shinnfu.com.au
