PAT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RANGE EXPANDS

More than 530 new part numbers have been added

Premier Auto Trade (PAT) has recently completed its biggest range expansion to date in the Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) category, with the company stating this expansion has made the range the largest in the Australian Aftermarket. Premier Auto Trade has added more than 530 new part numbers, taking the total range to more than 900 Wheel Speed Sensor products, covering nearly 14 million vehicles in Australia and New Zealand. The WSS range covers all makes and models including Hybrid and full electric vehicles like Teslas, with 190 part numbers exclusive to PAT. The new WSS program from Premier Auto Trade features direct OE replacement sensors, equipped with the correct plugs, wire sheathing, and mounting brackets for faster, easier installation. All 900 items are now live and listed in the Oscar catalogue against their relevant vehicle applications. Wheel speed sensors are of particular importance and are used in numerous applications in vehicle systems. The ABS sensor is typically located in each wheel hub/rotor. Some rear wheel drive applications have the sensor mounted in the rear differential. Wheel speed sensors make a direct contribution to driving dynamics, driving safety, driving comfort and reduced fuel consumption. In driver assistance systems such as ABS, TCS, ESP or ACC, motor control units use these sensors to determine the wheel speed. The ABS computer uses this information to prevent the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. If wheel speeds are not equal the computer modulates the anti-lock feature until the speeds are equalised. The wheel speed information from the AntiLock Brake System (ABS) is also provided to other systems including the engine management, gearbox and chassis control systems, and navigation systems. Premier Auto Trade has introduced this extensive range of high-quality OE replacement Wheel Speed Sensors as part of its Vehicle Management range. PAT says it carries one of Australia’s most extensive ranges of these specialised components, from the world’s leading manufacturers, including Delphi, Bosch, Pierburg, Denso, Continental, Walker Products, Walbro, NTK, Hitachi, Bremi, TE Automotive, Hella, Airtex, Intermotor, FAE, TI Automotive and Valeo. DBA CERTIFIES RANGE TO COMPLY WITH ECE-R90

Disc Brakes Australia (DBA) brake components are now covered by the demanding regulation

The UN ECE-R90 is a European regulation that defines standards for brake friction, rotors and drums in terms of design, performance and test standards. It states that for every replacement product, the above criteria must be within a specified performance tolerance (+/- 15 percent) when tested against genuine OE parts. In the past 12 months, Disc Brakes Australia (DBA), in concert with the Australian arm of the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) UK, a government body and independent testing house, has carried out an extensive testing and approval process. As a result, DBA brake rotors for over 95 percent of the relevant car parc are now covered by the demanding regulation. This includes the upgrade and performance lines – 4000 and 5000 Series – plus all corresponding Street Series rotors from the same ‘design families.’ DBA explains that its upgrade and performance brake pad ranges follow closely behind, with any remaining gaps continually being eliminated. DBA provides full test certification with its products when requested for ease of importation into many Asian and the Middle Eastern countries, even when R90 is not mandatory. While not legally required to undergo the same process, DBA explains that its local Australian applications are tested and approved to the same regime to ensure globally consistent product group performance, safety and consumer confidence. This means customers purchasing certified parts from DBA can expect superior braking performance compared with non-certified components and even the original part, says DBA. DBA’s brake rotors and pads are clearly marked with the ECE R90 imprint or stamp respectively. The R90 logo is likewise printed on the box label for ease of identification. DBA explains that the R90 certification adds to DBA’s long history of ensuring the highest product quality through various certification processes, most notably ISO9001 for international manufacturing quality standards. ADRAD’S NEW AFTERMARKET PARTS FOR 2023

Adrad says its range of quality aftermarket auto parts just keeps on growing

Back in late 2021, Adrad introduced a selection of starter motors and alternators to its product offering, beginning with well-known brands DENSO, Valeo and Delphi. These have been very well received and created a lot of interest from customers wanting even more, explains Adrad.

Spanning across its product range, Adrad says it has proven to be highly successful in providing good quality parts and value for money. Many of these parts wear the Adrad brand and are sourced from global manufacturers that must meet Adrad’s stringent standards, meeting or exceeding OE specifications. Naturally, says Adrad, these products carry the same national warranty support from Adrad’s branch and warehouse network across the country. Pictured here are some of the latest new products to bear the Adrad brand (available in early 2023). The new parts include alternators, mass air flow sensors and starter motors. Adrad expects these new parts will be extremely popular with mechanics and vehicle repairers. The product selection has been chosen based on strong customer interest and high vehicle population. Adrad is quality accredited to ISO9001:2015 which covers both manufacturing and distribution. It says this means that no matter where they are made, Adrad’s products adhere to a rigorous quality assurance process as they make their way to the customer and throughout their service life. To find out more about these new releases, speak with your local Adrad parts distributor or contact the Adrad Customer Service Team on 1800 882 043 or customerservice@adrad.com.au For more information, visit www.adrad.com.au Cars supplied with air suspension from the factory are becoming more and more popular. In the meantime, car workshops are also being confronted more and more often with air suspensions. In one of the latest episodes of the “Suspension Fundamentals – powered by Bilstein Academy” video series, Bilstein says it shows why the challenges for workshops aren’t that great. Premium suppliers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and the like in particular are increasingly equipping their vehicle models with comfortable air suspensions. Sometimes they have air suspensions fitted both on the rear axle and on the front axle. Others only have air suspension on the rear axle for level control. For car workshops, this development means new target groups and new potentials. Bilstein explains that it supplies high-quality B3 air springs and B4 air suspension modules for many different vehicles, from the Audi A8 to the VW Touareg. It says what is particularly interesting is that new additions to the range include spare parts for the Mercedes S-Class W222 and the GLE V167. First of all, however, Bilstein would like to warn against cheap remanufactured old parts from the internet with regard to air suspension modules. As we all know, remanufactured starters and alternators can be an alternative to brand-new spare parts. While the quality of the former is comparable to that of new parts, the situation is different for air suspension modules, says Bilstein. “We also purchase such cheap products at the Bilstein Academy, of course, and then analyse exactly what’s actually behind them,” Bilstein Academy Head, Rainer Popiol, said. Bilstein says the alarming thing is that these are often old, discarded air suspension modules that have been spruced up on the outside and made to look “as new”. Inside, however, old components that have only been repaired as far as necessary and used shock absorbers of varying mileage are at work. In addition, the solenoid valves are often inoperable or missing, turning an active system into a passive one. There is therefore an immense safety risk for motorists, and there is a great danger for workshops that customers will be left annoyed. Bilstein takes the view not to do things by halves and it says car workshops can therefore be confident that all Bilstein air suspension components are 100 percent brand new and perfectly match the original equipment in terms of quality. “We produce air suspension modules for original equipment. And it’s precisely this standard and this quality requirement that we also have for our OE replacement parts,” Rainer said. Working with products such as the B4 air suspension module or the B3 air spring from Bilstein involves special requirements. Yet, if mechanics follow a few basics, the replacement of air suspension components can be mastered without any great problems. There are many components working on the inside of the air suspension module that are already familiar from conventional shock absorbers. However, the assessment and identification of defects is carried out somewhat differently than in the case of problems with a conventional suspension system. Since, for example, the B4 air suspension module is designed as an enclosed component, unlike the familiar suspension struts with open shock absorber and separate spring, oil leaks cannot usually be detected. This makes further checks all the more important. In particular, a test drive to check for noises and driving stability. In addition, automotive professionals can actuate the solenoid valves in order to check the condition of these components. To replace a defective old air spring or air spring module, workshops should closely follow the installation instructions, in which Bilstein guides automotive professionals through the correct installation step by step using suitable illustrations. Bilstein expert Mustafa Yavuz has a valuable general tip for the installation of all kinds of air suspension systems: “what I personally always recommend: do not lower the vehicle completely from the car lift, set it down gradually. Before it is lowered completely, pressure must have built up. The engine should also be started, because that way I get the signal via the compressor when there is enough air in the system.” For more information, visit workshop.bilstein.com

STEER-BY-WIRE

ZF is driving the By-Wire future of mobility

As vehicles become increasingly electrified, automated, and software controlled, ZF says it is at the forefront of developing and industrialising advanced chassis systems with the industry’s most comprehensive offering of by-wire technologies that no longer require a mechanical connection or system fluids. A primary example is ZF’s steer-by-wire solution. “ZF’s smart by-wire systems end the era of mechanical connections and enable a new era of vehicle control,” ZF Chief Executive Officer, WolfHenning Scheider, said. “ZF’s steer-by-wire technology enables new safety and comfort features, like autonomous emergency evasive maneuvers or parking in very confined spaces. It marks a breakthrough on the way to fully self-driving cars and trucks by adding new design and engineering freedom.” For example, ZF steer-by-wire systems enable fully autonomous vehicle control for shuttles and robotaxis. For personal passenger vehicles it also offers unique capabilities like retractable steering wheels for fully automated driving modes, fully adaptable steering control reducing the handwheel angle for parking or low-speed maneuvers and enhanced crash safety through the removal of the steering column. ZF says By-wire represents the perfect fit for future electric and automated vehicles. ZF Group: leading the steer-by-wire transformation

ZF premiered its advanced steer-by-wire system to international media at its annual Global Technology Day and announced that this technology will be launched with industrial scale by a major global automaker within the next year. ZF has also procured additional customer contracts in all major regions for its steer-by-wire systems for series production, establishing itself as a leader in this technology field. Similarly, on the braking side of the equation ZF is the global leader in the production of its Integrated Brake Control system that is also primarily controlled using by-wire technology. Thanks to its complete portfolio, ZF says it is very well positioned to capture further significant market share in the growing by-wire chassis systems field and expects a significant share of the steer-by-wire market by 2030. “ZF is actively shaping the clean and autonomous future of mobility by launching advanced suspension-, steer-, and brake-by-wire systems that will become more commonplace due to the many advantages they offer,“ Wolf-Henning said. “And ZF’s software and high-performance computing platforms such as cubiX and the Vehicle Motion Domain Controller complete the picture and together create a new level of system performance. “This is a perfect demonstration of how much ZF has changed into a tech company by understanding digitalisation and decarbonisation as opportunities for its development.” Driving the by-wire future

ZF is a leading developer and produces a full range of by-wire systems that that do not require a direct physical connection, including steer-bywire including rear wheel steering; brake-by-wire with Integrated Brake Control; and electronically controlled active suspension. These technologies are being combined to yield system solutions that offer enhancements greater than they can alone. Here software and combined E/E architectures play a key role in adding value. By-wire systems offer greater degrees of vehicle control offering shorter stopping distances, more degrees of freedom in manoeuvring, better stability at high speeds and greater range and efficiency. With by-wire technologies the amount of steering assist or brake torque can be tuned to mimic the typical feel that drivers expect but can also be instantly adjusted to enhance brake force to reduce stopping distances or steer around an obstacle more expertly than drivers can do themselves. ZF’s brake-by-wire IBC braking system enables regenerative braking and energy recuperation that helps recharge the batteries of electric vehicles – highlighting how chassis and eDrives can work together to enhance motion control, extend range and offer more compact system packaging. INNOVATIVE BRAKING FOR THE AFTERMARKET

From ZF’s TRW brand

ZF says that as part of its global portfolio of premium brands, TRW is well-known for being a supplier of premium quality brake discs and pads as well as steering components to some of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers. It is also a major player in the global aftermarket, offering original equipment quality components to fit most passenger cars and light trucks in the Australian market. With an enviable local supply and manufacturing history dating back over 50 years, ZF considers TRW to be one of the most experienced and reliable providers of braking and steering components in Australia. ZF says its reputation for innovation and quality continues to be substantiated by TRW, with the brand welcoming the world’s first aftermarket brake pad for electric vehicles, known as ‘Electric Blue.’ While for more traditional petrol and dieselpowered vehicles, COTEC is an advanced silicon coating that TRW applies to the majority of its brake pads. It results in improved contact between the brake disc and pad, promoting shortened stopping distances of up to seven metres during the first few stops after fitment. This innovative coating means that TRW brake pads consistently outperform other premium brands during the bedding-in period when the friction co-efficient and therefore brake performance is at its lowest. TRW has also developed DTEC, a premium quality ceramic brake pad which reduces brake dust exfoliation onto the surface of the wheel rim by up to 45 percent. TRW produces over 12 million brake discs worldwide every year for both original equipment and the aftermarket. Its High Carbon Discs were developed as a means of reducing weight, while also improving braking performance and NVH (Noise, Vibration Harshness) properties via optimal thermal conductivity. This technology allows the discs to run cooler, for more consistent brake performance, better stability, plus increased resistance to distortion and thermal cracking. Another signature TRW product is its Black Painted brake discs, where the disc is coated in special gloss black paint to provide a protective barrier against corrosion. Packed in moisture-inhibiting VCI paper, the discs do not have to be cleaned of oil or rust preventative prior to fitting, enabling them to be taken straight out of the box and fitted, a valuable time-saver. There is also a range of TRW cast iron discs made from GG20 grey cast iron material, and then a further range of discs with integrated bearings, ABS ring sensors and fixing accessories, all to suit a myriad of replacement and aftermarket applications. TRW Steering linkage components are built to the highest original equipment standards, are corrosion resistant and lightweight. NEW FUEL CELL COMPONENTS SUPPLY COOPERATION

MAHLE and cellcentric are teaming up

Technology group MAHLE and cellcentric, the 50:50 fuel cell joint venture of Daimler Truck AG and Volvo Group AB, have signed a letter of intent to cooperate in the field of fuel cell technology for use in heavy-duty commercial vehicles as well as for other applications with comparable requirements. The cooperation focuses on the development and series production of the system component flat membrane humidifier. Among other things, the innovation improves the durability of the fuel cell and thus ensures a longer service life. The flat membrane humidifier is to be used both in fuel cell systems for commercial vehicles and in stationary systems, such as emergency power generators. “cellcentric has the intention to become a world leading manufacturer of fuel cells. Our fuel cell is explicitly designed for use in heavy trucks,” cellcentric Chief Executive Officer, Matthias Jurytko, said. “Accordingly, it meets the high-quality requirements of the automotive industry and the relevant standards. With MAHLE, we have a partner at our side that has decades of experience as an automotive supplier as well as broad expertise in fuel cell peripherals.” “We are pleased that cellcentric has chosen MAHLE technology. The agreement reached between MAHLE and cellcentric represents a valuable step towards a joint strategic future in the development of zero-emission powertrains,” MAHLE Group Corporate Executive Vice President Sales and Application Engineering, Martin Wellhöffer, said. “The agreement is a vote of confidence in MAHLE’s technological expertise. The fuel cell is an important pillar of our Group strategy as part of our technology-open approach to designing climate-neutral mobility,” MAHLE Management Board Member, Martin Weidlich, said. Martin is responsible for the Filtration and Engine Peripherals business unit. The flat membrane humidifier from MAHLE takes on a supporting role in the fuel cell system. In order to work as effectively and efficiently as possible, fuel cells must be supplied with sufficient fresh air and humidity. To ensure the correct moisture content in the fuel cell, conventional humidifiers use small hollow membrane fibers. MAHLE instead uses very thin membranes that are stacked in layers in the humidifier, thereby ensuring effective humidification of the fuel cells. The higher the humidity in the fuel cell, the more efficiently it works and the longer its service life. For more information, visit www.mahle.com

NARVA AEROTECH LED RANGE WINS

The range was recently recognised with a prestigious Good Design Award

The Narva range of high performing AeroTech LED strobes/rotators was recognised recently for its outstanding design and innovation, as part of the coveted Australian International Good Design Awards. The Good Design Awards are the highest honour for design and innovation in the country and celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian and international market, excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design. Taking out the ‘Product Design’ category in recognition of outstanding design and innovation, the AeroTech LED range was evaluated by more than 70 Australian and international jurors, including designers, engineers, architects and thought leaders. Each entry was evaluated according to a strict set of design evaluation criteria which included Good Design, Design Innovation and Design Impact. Designed and engineered in Australia, Narva states the range was developed with demanding Australian conditions and applications in mind, and combines superior lighting performance, eyecatching looks and rugged construction. To achieve its impressive light output, the AeroTech range combines high-power LEDs, precision reflectors and optics. Also helping visibility is the lamps’ unique ‘trilobular’ shape, characterised by a greater front surface and tapering from the front to the back of the lamps – this also improves aerodynamics (by 60 percent compared to traditional round strobes), resulting in reduced in-cabin wind noise. The AeroTech range is also backed by a seven-year warranty. The Good Design Awards Jury registered the following comments in handing down its verdict: “The judges were impressed by the culmination of several improvements to the typical round strobe warning light. Wider illumination surfaces, reduced drag at higher vehicle speeds and its ability to increase or decrease strobe output during bright daylight or night use, all added to the fresh look of this trilobular strobe. We anticipate the Aero Tech strobe to strongly compete within the market. Congratulations.” In commenting on the accolade, Brown and Watson International (owner of Narva) Group General Manager – Product, Ryan Elsegood, said the company was delighted to have won this Good Design Award. “This is high level recognition of Narva and Brown and Watson International’s strong dedication to product development, innovation and improvement,” Ryan said. “We continually push ourselves to be at the forefront of technology and design within the markets in which we operate – it’s a culture that we strongly encourage and reward, and the fruits of the hard work have been realised in the form of this Good Design Award for the AeroTech LED range. “I commend our product engineering and design teams for the contribution and efforts they made in developing the AeroTech product line, as a company it’s a range we can be very proud of.” For more information, visit www.narva.com.au

GHOST FAULTS AND BATTERY SUPPORT

Spooky goings on in the workshop can dramatically increase service times, risking workshop efficiency and reputation

By making sure that a vehicle battery is tested when it first enters the workshop, and supported during any diagnostic procedures, workshops can avoid frustrating and misleading ‘ghost-faults’, says CTEK Regional Sales Manager, Paul Oddy. A ghost fault or ghost code is in short, a fault that your diagnostic tool detects for one component, that has actually arisen from another. For example, when a vehicle arrives for service or to investigate a fault, you immediately connect a diagnostic tool, to identify potential fault or error codes. As part of this procedure, the memory on the vehicle’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is scanned, to see if there are any issues to address. Or in the case of a vehicle service – you need to reset the service indicator to tell the vehicle that it has been in for service. Whilst this procedure is being undertaken, it is crucial that the voltage across the vehicle system is correct. Voltage requirements vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and indeed from model to model, so CTEK says it is good process to check this. If this diagnostic procedure is undertaken when the battery has low voltage, and isn’t supported, an error code or fault will be reported by the diagnostic tool. And that’s because in the quest to protect against the battery failing, the vehicle Canbus system, the main communication channel between all vehicle control modules, will start to shut down all the systems it doesn´t need like the radio, start/stop function, air conditioning etc. Error codes may be reported for non-functioning systems, and if you don´t know that low battery voltage is the cause of the fault, you will start looking for, and trying to repair a fault that is not really there – hence the expression “ghost fault” – and it will remain a fault until you have taken care of the low voltage issue. To protect against this, CTEK recommends two important steps as soon as the vehicle enters the workshop: 1. Test the battery: using something like the

PRO Battery Tester from CTEK will help you to identify if battery voltage is low. 2. Hook the vehicle up to a battery support unit, in supply mode before undertaking any diagnostic work. Many battery support units, such as the CTEK MXTS40, PRO60 and

PRO120, enable you to specify the required voltage, so that potentially time-consuming ghost faults are not reported. CTEK says around one in three commercial vehicles entering the workshop have a battery that needs attention – so it is quite likely the battery will need support. It says that using a smart battery charger and support unit, like the MXTS40, PRO60 or PRO120, means that as well as supporting the battery, it will charge it too – protecting against the battery voltage dropping even lower that it was when it arrived in the workshop. IS YOUR BRAKE TESTER COMPLIANT?

New Australian standards are in place for heavy-vehicle brakes

The new standard (AS 3450:2021 Earth-moving machinery – Wheeled or high-speed rubbertracked machines – Performance requirements and test procedures for brake systems (ISO 3450:2011, MOD)) adopts ISO 3450:2011 with modifications for Australia, which specifies the minimum performance requirements and test procedures for the service, secondary and parking-brake systems of wheeled and highspeed rubber-tracked earth-moving machines, for the uniform assessment of those brake systems. The new standard supersedes AS 2958.1-1995 and is an important step in moving away from the inadequacies of AS2958. It focuses on performance measured in average deceleration, which makes it more consistent with other standards and methods. It also provides reasonable criteria that maps on to the standard outputs from an electronic brake meter. AutoTest says its AutoStop Heavy complies completely with this requirement. Brake testing with GPS

Many jurisdictions are changing their requirements for conducting dynamic brake tests to include the GPS location of where the test was conducted. This ensures the test was conducted in a suitable location and road surface/grade. Most recently the Queensland government has adopted this requirement for all tests that are reported to the Department of Transport for mobile Approved Inspection Station (AIS) or personalised transport vehicles. All of AutoTest’s brake meters can be purchased with a GPS module or are able to be retrofitted with the module. AutoStop Heavy brake tester

AutoTest explains that its AutoStop Heavy is an electronic in-vehicle brake-testing device that is fully compliant with transport-authority requirements across Australia, including AS2958 Australian Standard and ISO 3450 testing. This Australian made brake meter is designed to test the service and emergency brakes of heavy and slow-moving vehicles, off-road transport and even forklifts. Designed to be portable and user friendly, the AutoStop Heavy brake-performance tester measures average and maximum deceleration, stopping distance, test speed and pedal-force required to stop a heavy vehicle. Once the vehicle has come to a stop, the brake tester evaluates the brake performance and prints the results of the test. AutoStop Heavy comes with a data-logging facility that allows stored tests to be downloaded to a PC for storage and analysis. By providing an accurate report and confirming braking performance, AutoTest says employers can protect personnel and ensure that vehicles comply with occupational health and safety concerns. Calibration is also internationally traceable through the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA). AutoTest explains that AutoStop Heavy is capable of providing physical evidence of brake performance before and after any vehicle alterations, mitigating risks. The device is designed to be easy to set up and records the test GPS location, providing the latitude and longitude of the test position. Brake testing with AutoTest

The Victorian-based manufacturer AutoTest Products says it takes an innovative approach to testing equipment to ensure a brake’s capabilities and operating performance are factored into the safety of a vehicle. AutoTest explains that it provides a range of state-of-the-art automotive testing and diagnostic products designed to improve the accuracy of the test results used to meet safety regulations. AutoTest supplies workshops, regulatory authorities and service testing stations across the world. For more information contact AutoTest Products on 03 8840 3000 or visit www.autotest.net.au

NOT ALL PADS ARE THE SAME

In this article, Bendix discusses how to choose the right brake compound

At first glance, all disc brake pads are very similar – they have the same basic shape and more or less claim to do the same job. However, their simple appearance hides the complex manufacturing process that’s needed to develop a high-quality brake pad. A key component of the brake pads is the make-up of the brake compound, this is the friction material that plays the all-important role of meeting and coupling with the disc rotors to slow the vehicle down once the brakes are applied. The ingredients used to develop these friction compounds varies depending on the manufacturer, but general ingredients include a mixture of fibres, functional fillers, friction modifiers, lubricants, and resin binders. Differences in the source materials will result in the pads having different performance characteristics. How much noise pads generate, the level of dust they release, their durability and their stopping performance, are all greatly influenced by the compound they use and ingredients, and of course this makes some brake pads more suitable for certain applications and driving conditions than others. In the case of Bendix pads, the braking compounds can be categorised into three main groups, Ceramic / Non-Asbestos Organics (NAO), Low Metallic (Low Met) and Semi Metallic (Semi-Met). Ceramic/Non-Asbestos Organics (NAO)

Bendix Ceramic pads use a combination of organic materials such as synthetic glass fibres, aramid fibres, and natural fibres as the main reinforcing ingredients and include several organic modifiers as well as metals such as copper, but no steel. This combination being applied further finetunes the formulation depending on the make and model of the vehicle. The manufacturing process used for these pads consists of computer-controlled presses that heat and compress the material mix cyclically to form the pad. The processing method employed by Bendix dramatically increases the durability of the pads while also delivering low levels of dust, noise and rotor wear, while still providing a consistent pedal feel for the driver. Ceramic materials are the core of the Bendix range which are available within the Bendix General CT, EV-Hybrid, Euro+, Ultimate+ and Ultimate 4WD products. Low-Metallic (Low-Met)

Low-Met brake pads contain some ceramic materials but are designed for performance and high-speed driving styles, so contain high levels of mineral abrasives to provide additional stopping power for optimal performance. More spirited driving and more aggressive or regular braking leads to increased temperatures which can cause brake fade, and for these driving scenarios, the low-met compounds are used in the Bendix Street Road and Track range for performance stopping. Semi-Metallic (Semi-Met)

Semi Metallic brake pads contain high amounts of steel and iron that along with specific binding materials, provide consistency of stopping power in high temperature conditions. Vehicles that normally operate with heavier loads (elevated pad temperatures) over longer periods including utilities, vans and trucks, need pads that perform consistently when hot while also being longer lasting. For these applications, brake pads from the Bendix Heavy Duty range are well suited – they feature a specifically designed semi metallic compound. This combination of materials in conjunction with proprietary processing, results in a high integrity of the brake pad at temperature without lowering rotor life. MANN-FILTER’S FRECIOUSPLUS

Providing clean air for vehicle cabins

Around the world, more and more people are suffering from the effects of polluted air. This poses a risk not just outdoors in places with a lot of traffic, but also in indoor areas. In fact, MANN+HUMMEL says that according to a study by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), air pollution can actually be two to five times higher there than outdoors. It notes that in vehicle cabins, the situation is comparable. In the vehicle, cabin air filters ensure that drivers and passengers breathe in as little as possible of it. Like the MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus, for example, which reliably filters fine dust and harmful gases from the vehicle air. MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus in the air flow

Until now, polluted air was only cleaned at a few (traffic) hotspots around the world with stationary filter columns from MANN+HUMMEL. In all other locations, the air pollution remained unfiltered. The high levels of nitrogen dioxide and particulate pollution in road traffic enters the car interior through the ventilation system along with the outside air, endangering the health of the driver and passengers. MANN+HUMMEL explains it has therefore been offering highly efficient cabin air filters for clean air in vehicles for many decades. These are available in the automotive aftermarket as MANN-FILTER in original equipment quality, and are used in vehicles with every kind of drive system. Highest filter quality thanks to the biofunctional coating

One of these highly efficient cabin air filters is the innovative MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus. Its biofunctional coating binds allergens, filters viruses, and prevents the growth of bacteria and molds in the vehicle cabin. It also almost completely separates particulate matter containing particles with aerodynamic diameters of less than 2.5 micrometers (PM 2.5). These particles are approximately 30 to 40 times smaller than the width of a human hair and can penetrate deep into the lungs. Ultrafine particles can even enter the bloodstream via the pulmonary alveoli and can cause respiratory diseases and cancer, says MANN+HUMMEL. MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus for passenger cars

For a cabin filter to function reliably, it must be replaced once a year or every 15,000 kilometers. “We recommend that local experts regularly remind vehicle owners of the importance and benefits of the cabin air filter. Unfortunately, most car drivers are not aware of this,” MANN+HUMMEL Vice President Engineering Filter Elements, Martin Klein, said. MANN-FILTER offers more than 100 different FreciousPlus cabin air filter types in original equipment quality, covering almost 70 percent of the European car and van fleet. Many of these accolades have taken place on the Drag Strip, with elapsed times of around six seconds regularly clocked up, as well as numerous lap records at circuits all over the world. PPG’s Tremec T56 - TR-6060 market-leading six-speed sequential gear-set kits are available in both straight-cut and helical-cut dog-engagement as heavy-duty upgrade options for in-line and transaxle configurations. Each directly replaces the OEM internals and can be fitted into the manufacturer casings with no requirement for modification or adaptation. Always looking to innovate and push further towards the ultimate in transmission technology, PPG says it is excited to announce the introduction of a new range of billet aluminium casings and heavy-duty front plate for Tremec T56 and TR6060 sequential gearboxes. PPG explains that each is pre-fitted with its existing tried, tested and proven gear-set kits to provide levels of integrity, durability and functionality not seen before. In keeping with its philosophy of fit and function, the complete PPG unit directly replaces the OE gearbox with no changes required to surrounding components. This means it aligns directly with the vehicle’s existing bell housing, prop-shaft couplings, mountings and linkages, explains PPG. Further, PPG continues its zero-compromise approach when it comes to actuation of paddleshift systems by specifying and fitting control units custom designed and manufactured by multiple Le Mans 24-hour winners Shiftec. GMB DRIVE BELTS, TENSIONERS AND IDLER PULLEYS

GMB’s Belt Tensioner and Idler Pulley program offers extensive coverage of the Australian Car Parc

The current GMB range covers approximately 500-part numbers with another 50 currently being developed. At the heart of every GMB belt tensioner and idler pulley is a precision GMB bearing. GMB is a Tier One OEM manufacturer and has been in business for over 75 years and currently manufactures products for 26 OEMs around the world. Engines of today are very different as belt driven accessories are all driven by a single belt. The much higher loads now placed on drive belts and the variation in loads and engine vibration caused must be controlled. New components have been developed such as serpentine multi-v grooved drive belts to provide additional grip with the pulleys, specialised belt tensioners designed to maintain a constant belt tension and additional idler pulleys to enable the maximum amount of belt wrap to further improve grip on each of the driven accessories. Belts should be replaced if they have any cuts, cracking, missing pieces, fraying, wear on either side of the belt or damage caused by oils or other liquids. The bearings in the tensioners and idler pulleys must be smoothe and quiet in operation, so if there is any noticeable noise in the tensioner or idler pulley, GMB says it should be replaced. GMB explains that not all tensioners and idler pulleys are manufactured the same, stating that its Premium OE Quality Tensioners, Idler Pulleys, and Timing Components are precisionmanufactured to meet or exceed original equipment specifications and are quality assured through ISO/TS16949, ISO9001, ISO9002 and ISO14001. GMB says its Timing belt kits also use the same quality tensioners and idlers, with all GMB products manufactured by GMB. GMB states that its tensioners and idler bearings meet the rigorous requirements of vehicle manufacturers worldwide and explains that its design concept is based on OEM collaboration and the best materials possible to stand up to the worst under bonnet environment that the product can be subject to. GMB explains that it designs quality seals to prevent grease leakage and ingress of contaminants while still maintaining minimum friction between the moving surfaces. This is assisted with the use of high-quality lubricants to provide long life and maintain operation at extreme temperatures. The GMB Tensioner and idler range is a part of the Water Pump, Fan Clutch, Steering and Suspension, Universal Joint, Bearing and Hub, and Timing Belt Kit ranges of product currently available from GMB. FIX IT THE FIRST TIME

With the Snap-on Blizzard QTech

Snap-on says it is always innovating and creating solutions for customers, stating that its Air Conditioning units are no exception. When considering your next investment in Air Conditioning service equipment, an important feature is the ability to pressure test with dry nitrogen. Just like a vehicle’s engine cooling system, leaks can occur under both positive and negative pressure. Snap-on says this is why it uses vacuum bleeding in conjunction with pressure testers to determine the source of coolant loss. Air Conditioning systems follow the same principles. O-rings and seals tend to roll in one direction during vacuum and then move in the opposite direction under operating pressure. So, a vacuum leak test is only performing half of the inspection. Dry Nitrogen can be used in place of refrigerant for the purpose of testing for leaks under pressure. It does not react with refrigerant oil and does not alter its pressure when subjected to changes in temperature, explains Snap-on. The Snap-on Blizzard QTech IV is equipped with dry nitrogen charging so it’s a simple case of introducing nitrogen into the system once all existing refrigerant has been evacuated. Snap-on explains that the intuitive prompts on the 7.0-inch display will guide you through the process, stating there is no need to run the engine and compressor – once the system is full. The Blizzard Qtech IV will carry out the pressure test. If leaks are detected, the machine will give an alarm signal, discharge the nitrogen from the system, and display a system leaks alarm warning. If the Test detects no leaks, the machine will give no warning and discharge the nitrogen. Snap-on explains that its Blizzard QTech IV is an advanced air-conditioning service unit available in either R134a or HFO-1234yf models. It states the machines are not only fast, intuitive, and easy to use but amongst the most modern airconditioning service and re-gassing machines in the market. Features include Wi-Fi connectivity, a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, 3.0m hoses, and a 12-litre refillable refrigerant tank. Snap-on explains that this automatic recovery and charging station offers a unique hybrid functionality that supports electronic-driven compressors and includes the important option to pressure test with forming gas or dry nitrogen. If you’re looking for the latest Air Conditioning solution that will help your workshop become efficient and productive, Snap-on says the Snap-on Blizzard QTech is the perfect choice. GEARX PORTABLE JUMP STARTER

From HPP Lunds

Anything with a battery is likely to need a jump start at some stage but gone are the days of heavy, large jump starters that were really a battery on a trolley. Today HPP Lunds says it has an easy-to-use jump starter that will solve flat battery problems for cars, light trucks, boats, 4WDs and motorcycles: the GearX Portable Jump Starter. It says this compact and powerful unit that incorporates quick charging has a standby that will last up to 12 months as it has a power lock that reduces self-consumption so you can put it aside and know it will be ready when you are. Compared with older style jump starters this unit takes up minimal room in the garage cupboard or shelf, and if you need to grab it to get a customer out of trouble by the side of the road it is light and easy to transport. This product is for use with 12V batteries, and the following are the simple steps to jump start using this unit: • Step one – insert the plug of the smart battery clamp completely into the jump starter. If the green and red-light indicators on the battery clamp are flashing alternately, you move on to the next step. • Step two – connect the red clamp to the positive terminal (+) of the car battery and connect the black clamp to the negative terminal (-) of the car battery. If the green light on the clamp is on with click sound, you can move on to the next step. • Step three – start the car. There is also a force start function for vehicles not responding to the recommended starting sequence. Re-charging the jump starter is even easier, with HPP Lunds explaining you just connect it to a power source via the included USB C cable (or the alternate cigarette lighter adapter), press the on/off button, and it recharges at 20000MAH so it will recharge quickly. Once recharged, the LCD display will show 100 percent. NRS BRAKE PADS

Available in Australia from CIRCO Group Global

NRS Brake Pads feature rust resistant, unpainted, galvanized steel with zinc plating, incorporating the award-winning NRS attachment technology. CIRCO Group Global says these brake pads are amongst the longest lasting, most reliable options of friction material for Fleet, 4x4, Mining and EV vehicles in the world. Key features and benefits:

• Corrosion resistance: zinc plating technology ensures brake pads are protected, preventing corrosion and ensuring the pads can withstand harsh environments without the fear of delamination or separation. These unique features make NRS Brake Pads perfect for mine spec and off-road vehicles. • Long life: NRS Brake Pads offer remarkably low levels of wear, even when used in extreme conditions. Testing here in Australia has shown a use-life improvement of over 50 percent.

This is exceptionally important when it comes to fleet programs where service life equates to cost. The backing plate fixing method also ensures the friction material will never

delaminate, providing a longer life and safer brake operation for the entire life of the pad. • Low noise: the NRS Noise-cancelling Piston

Cushion Insert is designed to attack a known

NVH problem area, the caliper/pad/rotor interface, thus helping to reduce noise levels by up to 90 percent. Additionally, all NRS

Brake Pads are fitted with the correct antisqueal shim and all hardware usually expected on an OEM level product. • Low dust: the NRS compounds are renowned for putting out extremely low levels of light coloured ‘dust.’ Compared to OEM brake pads, NRS Brake Pads offer a significant improvement in low-dust and ease of cleaning.

Albert Atkins, the Project Manager for DC-to-DC Charging at REDARC, says the addition of BCDC Wiring Kits is the logical next step in the expansion of REDARC’s BCDC range. “With this new range of BCDC Wiring Kits, REDARC can offer the whole package; charging, mounting and now, installation,” Albert said. “Whether you are a trade installer or going ‘DIY’, our new wiring kits make it more convenient and easier than ever to install a BCDC. “Now, with two ranges of BCDC, Core and Classic, there is a BCDC to suit every budget.” REDARC says it is also excited to launch the Complete PowerDock Installation Kit (PPSDOCKWK-002), to suit the award-winning GoBlock. Including everything you need to install the PowerDock in the rear of a vehicle, this kit provides the GoBlock with a reliable and secure charging solution. For those who enjoy the ability to go portable at any time, REDARC says the full off-grid camping solution has arrived, stating you can now take your GoBlock from the car to the beach, worksite, family BBQ or campsite without worrying about wind, water or dust while saving time and money on separately purchased wires and fuses with this comprehensive ‘all-in-one’ kit. The pre-terminated wiring and fuses to connect the PowerDock in the rear of a vehicle to the start battery in the engine bay makes the installation of a PowerDock easier than ever, says REDARC, which explains a genuine Anderson connector and cable is also included to connect fixed or portable solar panels. Like all REDARC products, the new Wiring Kits are backed by nationwide support, including what REDARC states is a hassle-free warranty as well as the REDNetwork certified installer network and after-sales service. MOTORSPORT AND CLASSIC PRESERVATION

Hyper BMW PowerSports offers the KMS Engine Control Module to the aftermarket

KMS Engine Control Modules have been developed to piggyback to your car for easy EFI upgrade, motorsports, and modern engine conversions. The biggest threat to our aftermarket society, motorsport, and vehicle restoration, is engine economy and engine availability says Hyper BMW PowerSports. With a KMS Engine management unit, Hyper BMW PowerSports says you can upgrade your old carburetor engine to EFI, coil pack ignition, and digital management, with one simple package. Hyper BMW PowerSports has also developed a suite of Carburetor adaptors to suit fuel injection, whilst retaining the original Carb as a throttle valve. It also uses KMS Engine management hardware and software on its customer’s race cars, and those wishing to use a V8 to replace the six cylinder or four cylinder their vehicle was manufactured with. The MD35 pictured supports up to 12 cylinder engines, and piggyback via OEM connections to run body modules. Hyper BMW PowerSports says KMS Management software is simple to use for tuning and boasts a 95 percent plug and play installation. Instructions and in-depth setup as well as after sales support is provided by Hyper BMW PowerSports 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year. Each MD35 management system includes Android Bluetooth dashboard and wiring for data ports, while extended wiring for engine or EFI conversion is available on request. Further, connection via USB Port to PC or laptop using the KMS Software provided makes the whole experience pleasant, says Hyper BMW PowerSports. Hyper BMW PowerSports has also utilised the last four years to develop an Engine Control System, based on this very similar KMS framework, to piggyback its electric AC motor range to your existing chassis. It says this project is solely focused on providing the easiest, most sympathetic, and most affordable EV conversion for any vehicle, utilising one, two, or four AC motors, and in some trial instances, multi-gear transmissions. Hyper BMW PowerSports says its passion is preserving the classics, motorsport advancements, and focusing on as much stress free DIY as possible, to reduce the cost point for owners and race teams. From custom Air/Fuel systems, the 6-PAK supercharger system, unique engine conversions, and built to spec race cars, to developing teams and branding for workshops, sponsorship management, and driver training, Hyper BMW PowerSports says it has just about everyone covered.
