AAA INTRODUCES NEW NO COST IDENTITY THEFT PROGRAM
October is Fall Car Care Month and AAA has identified a network of approved repair facilities that include new car dealerships and independent garages. These shops all meet AAA’s strict quality standards and display the AAA logo. When you see the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign, you’ll find highly trained technicians, a wide range of professional repair services and guaranteed workmanship. And while hundreds of repair facilities apply for the AAR rating each year, only about one-third are able to meet AAA’s rigid criteria. AAA ensures the repair facility has the right tools and equipment to provide a wide range of repairs. They must also adopt staff training qualifications and insurance guidelines. Finally, AAA surveys customers about their satisfaction with the facility. The AAR program protects members against repair failure, because all repairs, parts, labor, and components are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles under normal operating conditions. In addition, AAR shops have agreed to allow AAA to investigate repair service transactions that have been disputed by members and to abide by AAA’s resolution. See page 8 for a list of AAR garages in your area.

Avoiding common and costly life insurance mistakes Changes in relationships can impact the status of your beneficiary
L
ife insurance is one of the best sources of financial security for loved ones left behind after a death. One of the most important details of any life insurance policy is naming the beneficiary/beneficiaries for the policy. The beneficiary is the person(s) you wish to receive the proceeds from the policy upon your death. Believe it or not, there are some people that purchase their life insurance policy and neglect to select a beneficiary or never revisit the policy as life changes. You can save your loved ones a lot of time, money, and trouble by carefully selecting a beneficiary for your life insurance policy and making sure that information is kept applicable to your present situation. Most people don’t like to have conversations about anything involving death, but a possibly awkward conversation now can save your beneficiary the frustration and time of hunting down the information during what will already be a very difficult time for them. Here are three things you can do to avoid some of the most common and costly beneficiary mistakes:
Revisit the policy
Life is constantly in motion. Sometimes this motion doesn’t affect the relationships a person has, but more often than not it does. If relationship changes have an impact on
a hard decision, conflict, or the need to revisit the policy can result in confusion and legal challenges that can tie up the money or cause the omission of someone you wanted included. You want to be specific when naming a beneficiary. So, use the given name and not generic terms like child, parent, wife, or sibling.
Be cautious
Some people name themselves or their estate as the beneficiary. This means that the life insurance benefit will go directly to their estate. However, naming yourself or your estate can leave the benefit subject to taxation and enable creditors to seize it for unpaid bills. Remember, if you have any questions, concerns, or doubts about your beneficiary designation, then you can always consult your tax advisor or attorney.
STICK WITH THE PLAN — People often forget to revisit their insurance policies as life changes. the beneficiary you’ve selected, then the life insurance must be updated accordingly. And, we aren’t just talking about obvious deaths, divorces, births, or marriages. For example, if your children were underage when you first obtained your life insurance policy, then you might have established a guardian or trust. Once the children reach adulthood, it might make better
sense to name them directly as beneficiaries. Another example would be if a beneficiary is now elderly or no longer mentally competent. In such cases, it might make better sense to name an alternative beneficiary and make the appropriate provisions in your will to care for the previous beneficiary.

Let Cancun be your place in the sun An oasis of flawless beaches and fabulous attractions

ancun could best be described as a beach with an island in the middle. Centuries ago, Mayan emperors traveled here to get some R&R. Today, this cosmopolitan resort perched on the limestone shelf of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is among the premier vacation spots on the planet. Luxury hotels line the Hotel Zone, a seahorse-shaped oasis connected by two causeways and flanked by the tranquil Nichupte Lagoon and the restless Caribbean Sea. People watchers can take a stroll on the Malecón Américas a palm-fringed promenade hugging the shoreline. Cancun’s twelve miles of beach are celebrated for their turquoise waters and powdery white sand. All are open to the public and anyone with the inclination can walk from one end to the other. Newly revamped cruise ship lets the Sunshine in Carnival Destiny changes everything — including the name
C
ruise lines need to continually update their fleets to ensure existing ships match the stateof-the-art standards of their newer siblings. Sometimes these changes amount to little more than new carpet and drapes, or a refresh around the pool area. In the case of Carnival Destiny they decided to change everything, including the name. Launched in 1995, the world’s first 100,000-plus-ton cruise ship was a forerunner of a new class of grand-scale vessels. Now Destiny has a whole new destiny so to speak. The 3,006-passenger ship recently underwent a $155 million makeover morphing Carnival Destiny into Carnival Sunshine during a 49-day dry dock in Italy. The refit includes a radically reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck, the expansion of two other decks and 182 new cabins. Sunshine emerged in May with all of the elements of Carnival’s ground breaking Fun Ship 2.0 program, and several exciting new features all her own. Ask if your policy has any exclusions, such as for preexisting conditions or adventure activities. If your health insurance coverage is not adequate, consider buying a short-term supplemental policy. Look for a policy that will make payments to hospitals directly. Medical Evacuation Insurance — If the health care at your destination is not up to U.S. standards, consider buying medical evacuation insurance. This can be purchased separately or as part of your travel health insurance policy. This insurance will pay for emergency transportation from a remote or poor area to a high-quality hospital. This is also the time of year when the sun sits much lower in the horizon and glare from the sunlight can temporarily blind you or drivers around you. Keep your windshield clean and streak free to minimize dazzle and use your sun visor to block reflected light. Cooler weather causes rubber to harden reducing traction, affecting your tire’s cornering and braking ability. Black ice may linger on roads in shaded areas or particularly on bridges. As warm weather fades, road hazards such as wet leaves, frost, and glare from sunlight during morning and evening rush hours can make driving more hazardous. AAA and PennDOT offer the following fall driving tips: • Increase your following distance in severe weather, at dusk and dawn and when in an area with wet leaves. • Check your vehicle’s headlights, taillights and turn signals to ensure they are working properly. • Have your vehicle’s heating and wiper systems checked to ensure they are working properly. Under Pennsylvania law, when your wipers are on, your headlights must also be on. • Be sure your tires have sufficient tread depth in case of an early season snow.
