AAA Mobile also features easy access to hotels and car rentals, maps and routing tools, trip-planning resources from AAA travel experts, current gas prices, exclusive member discounts and more. Seniors need to safeguard their assets from fraudsters Steps you can take to protect your nest egg

F

or many Americans, it’s hard to eke out a living and secure a nest egg for retirement. Fortunately, there are plenty of financial experts offering advice on how to save for the “golden years.” But that’s definitely not the case when it comes to skilled professionals with solutions on how to safeguard your life savings from identity theft. If you are retired or are close to retirement, protecting your nest egg from identity thieves is more vital today than ever, as is becoming aware of the different scams fraudsters use to separate you from your money. Here are some steps to preserve your investments: If you get a call from someone you don’t know to donate funds to a surefire investment opportunity, hang up the phone. A legitimate financial institution won’t just call you out of the blue with a windfall opportunity. Find a secure place to store Social Security numbers and medical information. Carry only necessary information in your wallet. If you get checks in the mail, such as Social Security, arrange to have them deposited directly into your bank account. Identity thieves are known to watch seniors’ mailboxes. Love your family members, but be aware that the majority of identity theft against seniors can be attributed to friends, family members or caretakers. It’s sad, but true, that the people closest to you have the highest probability of

PROTECT YOUR ASSETS — Identity thieves often target seniors with their scams. taking advantage of you. Place limits on the amounts that anyone can withdraw from your bank accounts without actual verification of who they are. For example, someone authorized to pull money from your account could use an ATM without having to go inside the bank to see a teller. Monitor your credit reports regularly. Check for erroneous information and to spot identity theft. Checking your credit reports can also help you monitor how you spend money. As we age, we generally become

more vulnerable to fraud. Getting older sometimes makes it harder to make effective and safe financial decisions. It can’t hurt to put some safeguards in place right now to protect your hardearned assets. As a smart first step, AAA members can sign up for ProtectMyID® identity theft monitoring, an online program that simply requires computer access and an email address. It’s a member benefit with two levels of protection: ProtectMyID Essential and ProtectMyID Deluxe. It’s just another way AAA offers members peace of mind. Credit reports and credit statements are often the first places evidence of fraud shows up. If you only look at your reports once a year for free, you may miss warning signs, and identity theft could go unchecked for months. Signs of fraud that may appear on your credit report: • New credit accounts you don’t recall opening • A home address for a location where you’ve never lived (your credit report includes your current and past residences) • Late or missed payments on accounts you’ve always paid on time (payment history is a key portion of the report) • Entries indicating you have a judgment or collections action against you Check your credit accounts at least once a month for signs of fraud, including: • Charges you don’t recall making withdrawals, transfers or cash advances you didn’t authorize • Notices of account changes you didn’t request, such as a credit limit increase or the addition of another person as an authorized account user

A nice surprise — Life insurance may cost less than you think There are ways to make life insurance more affordable By Robin Jones hen Mike Richards found out that his wife, Linda, was having twins, he figured it was time to buy some life insurance. He wanted to ensure his family’s financial security and know that his mortgage and kids’ college tuition would be covered if something were to happen to him. And he understood that he had to jump on it. “I knew the longer I waited, the more expensive it would be,” he says. But his policy cost less than he expected. “I was really surprised it wasn’t higher,” he says. His experience is common. Yet many people don’t purchase life insurance because they worry about the cost. Worldwide research and consulting company LIMRA recently found that 85 percent of people who didn’t have life insurance chose not to buy it because they thought it’d be too expensive. Seventy-eight percent of those who already had some life insurance didn’t buy more for the same reason. But LIMRA also found that the average cost of a 20-year $250,000 term life insurance policy for a healthy 30-yearold was $400 per year. That’s about $33 per month, less than most 30-year-olds spend on one dinner out with friends. Here are a few ways to make life insurance even more affordable. Buy early — Age is probably the most important factor in determining cost. Youth is generally an advantage. For

W

FAMILY MATTERS — Life insurance can guarantee your family’s future. example, the policy that costs a healthy 30-year-old $400 a year could cost a healthy 50-year-old closer to $1,500. So it’s best to buy coverage as soon as someone depends on your income, whether that’s a spouse or a child. If you purchase your policy when you’re young and healthy, consider locking in your low rate for as long as possible. The right term life policy might let you keep your premium low for up to 30 years. A permanent policy like whole life or universal life might go longer. Stay healthy — Health is generally the second most important thing insur-

ers consider when they set premiums. Most companies will charge smokers and the obese more. Rates also increase for those with other health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes. However, if you can show that you take care of yourself—by maintaining a healthy diet or exercise routine—most insurers will keep your premium low. If you’re healthy, think about individual term insurance — A group policy through your workplace will usually cost more because it has to cover the unhealthy people in the group. Don’t overbuy — Purchasing too lit-

tle life insurance risks leaving your family in a position where they can’t pay the bills. But premiums rise as coverage increases, which is why it’s important to meet with an experienced life insurance agent who can help you decide how much life insurance is right and explain the various life insurance products that may be available to you. Consider a convertible term policy — Term life insurance, which covers you for a limited amount of time (a term), is usually less expensive than whole life or universal life. Those plans are referred to as permanent, because they can cover you for your entire life. Many people opt for term insurance because it’s more affordable. If you do decide to purchase term life insurance, make sure it’s a convertible policy: one that starts off as term insurance but can be converted to permanent insurance without having to re-qualify for the policy when you’re ready for a permanent policy.

Welcome to your new favorite credit card The AAA Member Rewards Visa® can be very rewarding

T

he purchases you make every day will reward you when you use the AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card. There’s no limit on how much you can earn and no spending categories that change quarterly. The Member Rewards card can be used for everything from your gym membership to your phone bill to a family vacation. Any purchases you make will earn points. Depending on what you purchase, you’ll get at least one point for every dollar you spend. If you use the credit card to make purchases at the grocery store, drug store or at the gas pump – and who doesn’t have these expenses on a regular basis – you will earn two points for every dollar spent. Where the credit card gets really rewarding is when you use it to make qualifying purchases at AAA, including travel, merchandise and insurance. Every dollar spent with AAA on qualified purchases earns three points. Next time you have to renew your membership, why not use the card and earn triple points? You can start redeeming those points for 1% cash back starting with as few as 5,000 points. To illustrate, if you spend $100 a week at the grocery store, over the course of a year you’ll have spent $5,200. At 2 points per $1, that comes out to 10,400 points or $104 cash back. See how fast your points can add up?

MORE REWARDING — The AAA Member Rewards Visa® card lets you earn points on your purchases. There’s no end to how the Member Rewards card can work in your favor. Use it to purchase large ticket items or to pay for your travel arrangements. It makes sense to use a credit card with reward points rather than writing a check for a large amount. Take Travel Insurance for the entire family No charge for children 17 and under with TripAssist Family Care

T

raveling abroad can be a rewarding experience. But unexpected events can sometimes spoil even the most carefully crafted vacation. What if you’re suddenly unable to go because of an illness to a non-traveling loved one? What do you do if your luggage is lost or stolen, or you or a family member are injured while away from home? With features like comprehensive trip cancellation and primary emergency medical coverage, and 24 hour travel assistance, the Family Care Plan from Allianz Global Assistance, is the perfect traveling companion. And there’s no charge for kids 17 and under when traveling with parents or grandparents, and no surprise processing fees! This makes travel insurance premiums more affordable, for families with young children. Should your luggage fail to arrive when you do, baggage loss and damage coverage is $1,000 — double that of comparable packages. Baggage delay coverage has been increased to $300, a 50 percent improvement over previous plans. TripAssist Family Care also protects your travel investment if your trip is delayed or cancelled for a covered reason, such as a major injury, jury duty or other unforeseen circumstances. Recent additions to this plan include reimbursement of Frequent Flyer miles and associated airline fees, and vehicle return coverage if your road trip is interrupted.

NO WORRIES — If something does happen on your vacation, you want to be prepared. Medical treatment on your domestic or overseas vacation may leave you with expensive out-of-pocket expenses. TripAssist Family Care includes $25,000 in primary medical coverage for emergency medical costs during your travels. There’s no need to file claims with your regular health insurer first. Emergency medical evacuation can be a lifesaver when traveling to a destination where health care is not up to U.S.

standards. TripAssist Family Care will reimburse you for transportation costs to the medical facility and back home, up to $500,000. An array of optional benefits helps you tailor a plan to your own specific needs. TripAssist Family Care Trip+ is ideal for families traveling abroad. It doubles many of the Family Care Plan’s post departure benefits including missed connection coverage, travel delay, emer-

gency medical coverage and transportation, and baggage loss/damage or delay. For just a few dollars a day Rental Car Damage Protector provides primary coverage for covered collision, loss and damage, along with 24 hour emergency assistance. The Required to Work option provides trip cancellation and interruption coverage when your travel plans change for a variety of work related issues. The Cancel Anytime option offers greater flexibility than a traditional trip cancellation policy because it allows you to cancel your trip for almost any reason that the Family Care Plan does not already cover and receive 80% of a nonrefundable trip costing up to $10,000 back in cash. TripAssist Theme Park Protection is a low-cost travel insurance plan intended for AAA members planning trips to domestic amusement parks. It has appropriate levels of cancellation coverage, medical protection, and convenience services for most trips to amusement parks within the United States. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Several factors can affect the cost of any travel insurance policy. Before deciding on a plan, be sure you understand what you’re buying and what each policy does and does not cover. For more information, visit AAA.com/travelinsurance.

Step off the plane in Lisbon; its charms and style make it one of Europe’s last “undiscovered” capitals, and it invariably surprises and delights visitors. Wind your way among its hilly, narrow alleys aboard a similarly narrow streetcar to find neighborhood taverns where traditional fado vocalists reveal the soulful depths of the Portuguese personality. A guided tour of Lisbon features the Moorish Alfama Quarter, Jerónimo’s Monastery (a Unesco World Heritage site), the Monument to the Discoveries and the Tower of Belém. On the Silver Coast, visit the pilgrimage town of Fátima, a testament to Portugal’s Catholic heritage. View Batalha Monastery (UWH) and visit quaint

See the westernmost point in continental Europe, the PORTUGUESE POTTERY rugged coastline, wind surfers and Estoril, known for luxurious homes & gardens.

SPAIN

Once a global empire and colonial power, Spain ruled many parts of the world throughout history. Today, it’s a country with an unhurried, relaxed atmosphere — and a place welcoming to travelers from all over the world. You’ll sense its former glory and its present hospitality on your tour of Madrid, the vibrant capital, especially at its lively and historic center (the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor). After a fascinating tour of the Royal Palace’s lavish halls, banquet rooms, throne room, armory and courtyard, travel south to Toledo, a UWH site and Spain’s glorious medieval capital. Marvel at its Gothic cathedral, a 13th-century synagogue and Santo Tomé (church home of El Greco’s The Burial of Count Orgaz). Tour the Mezquita (UWH), an architectural marvel built by the Moors in the 8th century as a magnificent mosque, which then became the city’s cathedral in the 16th century. See also its well-preserved Jewish Quarter. In Seville, Spain’s “cultural capital,” see Columbus’ tomb, the ornate cathedral (UWH) and Giralda Bell Tower. Enjoy a walking tour of quaint old Santa Cruz Quarter with its bright flowers, white-washed buildings and winding streets. Visit Plaza de España and María Luisa Park, one of Europe’s loveliest. Top it off with regional cuisine and an unforgettable flamenco performance by Seville’s top dancers. Another UWH site awaits at Granada’s immense hilltop palace; Alhambra is a marvel of geometric patterns, tilework, fountains and gardens. In Valencia, a treasure trove of Roman and Arabic architecture surrounded by citrus groves, visit Lladro and learn about the history and making of its world-famous porcelain figurines. A “paella experience” reveals where this Valencia rice & seafood dish originated and how it’s made — and includes a tasty paella lunch! Last but not least, Barcelona buzzes with life! See the city’s sights, including Antonio Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia (UWH), Parc Güell, Casa Batlló and the unconventional Casa Milà.

Just because you don’t own a home in Florida is no reason you can’t be a “snowbird” and live the leisurely (and warm!) life-style of the Sunshine State for 28 nights (Saturdayto-Saturday weeks) in 2016. AAA Travel has just what you need: 4-week Saturday-to-Saturday rentals of a roomy furnished vacation home in peaceful Port Charlotte! On the southwest Gulf Coast just 100 miles south of Tampa and 65 miles north of Naples, Port Charlotte is a premier ecotourism destination that’s off the beaten path and free of crowds, yet offers sailing, boating, fishing, birding, shopping, dining, arts & more. One of Sail magazine’s 10 Greatest Places to Sail, the Charlotte Harbor area offers nature adventures like canoeing/kayaking on 53 trails, exploring 5 national wild-life refuges and discovering prime birding opportunities. There are more than 70 parks & preserves, 16 golf courses and numerous sporting events and recreational facilities. Cultural pursuits include visual arts, theater, dance and music (Port Charlotte is home to the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra). No wonder Money magazine called it Best Place to Retire. Choose from a selection of attractively landscaped homes, and use yours as a base from which to explore the local area’s uncrowded beaches and/or the many attractions within comfortable driving distance. Or just settle in, take advantage of the screened-in swimming pool and laugh at winter back home! Get away from it all...or invite family and/or friends to share some Florida fun with you. These 3-bedroom/2-bathroom (some with 2.5) homes can comfortably sleep 6 (bedding/ linens provided). They feature fully equipped kitchens (dishwasher, stove/oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave) and dining areas for everyone to gather in...screened-in heated pools for swimming, lounging and loafing! Living rooms feature entertainment centers (with cable). Optional weekly cleaning/linen service is available for an additional fee. Imagine not having to shovel snow this winter...and watching the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico instead. Forget about bundling up just to go to the corner store...and ATURE slipping into a soothing pool after dining on your patio instead. With AAA’s CA O help, you can look forward to winter this year; contact a AAA travel agent now! TI

Ohio is exploding with activities this summer New things to see, do and discover in the Buckeye State

S

ummer in Ohio is roaring at the speed of a record-setting roller coaster. Visitors can go wild at the zoos, take off into the wild blue yonder, zip around the curves at Cedar Point, or relax at a rubber baron’s mansion. Cedar Point has unveiled Rougarou its newest coaster. Straight from the depths of the Louisiana swamp, the mythical legend comes to life in the park’s first floorless coaster, hurling riders at speeds of more than 60 mph. Rougarou dives down 137 feet, heaving riders through high-speed twists and four howl-inducing inversions while their feet dangle just inches above the track below. Some legends are passed down. This is one you just can’t pass up. An expanded version of the Tuskegee Airmen exhibit recently opened at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, Dayton Additions include a newly-restored Stearman PT-13D aircraft, never-before-seen photos, Col. (Ret.) Edward C. Gleed’s flight jacket, Maj. (Ret.) Charles Hall’s Distinguished Flying Cross and items from Lt. Col. (Ret.) Charles H. DeBow, one of five original Tuskegee pilots. Located in the WWII Gallery, the exhibit pays tribute to the first African American members of the U.S. Air Force who paved the way to the integration of all races in the U.S. armed services.

COASTER CAPITAL — Rougarou is Cedar Point’s 17th roller coaster. Journey To Space is a new giant screen format film showing in the Air Force Museum Theatre. The film provides a tribute to the Space Shuttle program and unveils a new era of deep space exploration. Visitors will learn about the International Space Station; Orion, designed to carry humans on long term missions to Mars and beyond; Olympus, an inflatable habitat for long-duration missions; and the Space Launch System (SLS) that will be used

to transport everything. The Toledo Zoo has just completed a $25.5 million renovation to its aquarium featuring a 90,000-gallon exhibit called The Reef. Every step leads you further into the mysteries that lurk underwater, from flooded forests of the Amazon and deep seas of the Pacific, to fish that glow in the dark and sea nettles that can kill with a touch. Talk to a diver as they swim with the sharks and tropical fish in a floor-

to-ceiling tank, and share what’s happening in the reef. Touch tanks allow visitors to interact with sharks, starfish, horseshoe crabs and other sea creatures. The newly renovated Aquarium houses 3000+ aquatic animals in 178,000 gallons of water. Hailed as a National Historic Landmark, Akron’s Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Built by the co-founder of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, the Tudor Revival-Style Manor House has 65-rooms filled with original furnishings. Visitors can tour the home, Corbin Conservatory, Gate Lodge, the Carriage House and approximately 70 acres of landscaped grounds with eight gardens. Don’t miss the English Garden designed by Ellen Biddle Shipman, and the Birch Allee with more than 100 gray birch trees.

Drivers younger than 18 will now be limited on the number of passengers in the car and hours they can drive. “The change in driving times and the passenger restrictions during the first 12 months of driving allows Ohio’s young motorists to gain more experience on the road, while reducing their risks,” said Karhlton Moore, Executive Director of the Office of Criminal Justice Services. “This will help them become safer drivers.” During the first 12 months after receiving a license, probationary drivers younger than 18 must follow these restrictions: • No driving between midnight and 6 a.m. (unless with a parent/guardian or with a valid work, church or school documentation) • No driving with more than one nonfamily member as a passenger • All passengers must buckle up • No cell phone use while driving According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, drivers between 16 and 20 were involved in nearly 57,000 acci-

recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that taking one’s eyes off the road for more than two seconds doubles the risk of an accident. Ask your child to keep their cellphones in the trunk, or another part of the car to limit distractions. Parents can create a pact with their teens to discuss distraction-free driving and make driving privileges contingent on driving safely. Enrolling your teens in a driver education program can also help to give them the experience they need to be safer drivers, and many insurance companies offer discounts upon completion of courses.

PLAYING IT SAFE — Ohio is helping new drivers under 18 safely get valuable driving experience. dents over the past year. “It takes a beginning driver five years to get the required experience they need to become a good driver,” said Theresa Podguski, director of public affairs, AAA East Central. Building the foundation to create a good driver often begins with the parents. Taking the time to talk with teens about safe driving habits, setting individual road rules in addition to

state regulations, and providing positive examples in the driver’s seat can help to ensure young drivers receive the encouragement and experience they need to be safe drivers. With the school year approaching, making sure your teen has the skills necessary to take on the road and distractions are key. Remind your teen that even splitsecond distractions can be dangerous. A

You’re not really multitasking, you’re driving blind Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel

A

h, the summer road trip, a perfect time to relax as you enjoy the ride. But if you’re sampling the latest Triple, Venti, Half Sweet, Non-Fat, Caramel Macchiato, or arguing with your tween about whether New Direction is the new Beatles, you shouldn’t be doing it from behind the wheel. According to a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study, driver inattention — from fatigue or a driving distraction — was a contributing factor in nearly 80 percent, or four out of five crashes A driving distraction is anything that takes your eyes (visual) or your mind (cognitive) off the road or your hands off the wheel (manual). And some of the more dangerous distractions are a combination, such as texting, which involves all three. Distractions have been around since the age of the Model T, but the advent of cell phones, text messaging and heavy urban traffic has taken those distractions to a historic level. Here are some to avoid: Dashboard Dining — Drinking a hot coffee or chomping down a burger is not only a visual and manual distraction, it’s also messy. Fumbling with napkins, condiments, wrappers, and beverages means you’re not watching the road. And some foods are more

RISKY BUSINESS — Activities like texting, eating, and changing clothes increase the risk of being involved in a crash. dangerous than others. Top no-no consumables in the car include hot coffee and soup, tacos, chili, hamburgers, fried chicken and jelly donuts. Grooming — This includes painting your nails at the stoplight and other not-so-innocent distractions. Save the shaving for the shower and lay off putting on lipstick behind the wheel. Back Talk — Do you turn to yell at your kids or do you look at them

through your rear-view mirror? A quick tip: be sure they are properly and safely buckled up and give them books, toys or games to occupy their time. Channel Surfing — Adjust vehicle controls, such as radios or mirrors, before you begin your trip. Take advantage of normal stops to adjust controls or ask your passenger to adjust controls. Nodding Off — Driving while drowsy results in a four- to six-times higher

near-crash/crash risk. Long trips can be tough on children and their parents. Plan to stop along the way to take a group stretch, get something to eat and drink, return any calls or text messages, and change drivers if you’re feeling tired or drowsy. Dialing for Danger — Can’t live without your cell phone? Dialing while driving makes that a real possibility. Activities performed when completing a phone call (reaching for a phone, looking up a contact and dialing the number) increased crash risk by three times. Put another way, taking your eyes off the road for 5 seconds is like driving the length of an entire football field at 55 mph wearing a blindfold. Studies have shown that “hands-free” cell phones are no safer than a handheld cell model.

Celebrating a century of AAA Roadside Assistance AAA has been helping stranded motorists for 100 years

E

ver since there have been cars, there has been car trouble — flat tires, dead batteries, blown radiator hoses and more. The earliest cars were notoriously unreliable, and drivers often found themselves stranded. AAA came to rescue when it introduced Roadside Assistance — 100 years ago this year. In 1915, the Automobile Club of St. Louis — now AAA Missouri — launched its “First Aid Corps.” The club deployed mechanics on motorcycles to assist stranded drivers. AAA clubs across the country quickly recognized the value and AAA’s trusted emergency road service network was born. Today, AAA responds to more than 30 million calls for help each year, with AAA East Central handling more than 1.25 million of those throughout its five-state region. Early calls were recorded on paper and placed on a conveyor belt to a dispatcher. Later, AAA pioneered the use of radio dispatching right after World War II. Today, AAA uses the latest technology to make the roadside experience completely seamless. Advanced AAA call centers use computer-based systems to track and monitor calls and to dispatch and communicate with service providers. Members can now receive calls or texts to keep them updated on the loca-

A CENTURY OF PROGRESS — Times have changed but Roadside Assistance remains AAA’s signature service. tion of the driver. Or they can use the AAA Mobile app’s Truck Tracker feature on their mobile device to ease roadside anxiety. “AAA understands the role that technology plays in our daily lives,” notes Jim Lehman, president AAA East Central. “Members feel vulnerable when they experience a breakdown, and the Truck Tracker function on the

AAA Mobile app offers the added benefit of knowing exactly when help will arrive.” Should you lock your keys in your car, experience a flat, need a jumpstart, or a tow call 1-800-AAA-HELP, or request Roadside Assistance online. Your membership covers you, not your vehicle, so you can call whether you’re in your own car, a friend’s, or a rental,

and whether you’re the driver or a passenger. If your vehicle won’t start, AAA’s Mobile Battery Service provides convenient mobile battery testing on the roadside, using state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. Should the battery need to be replaced, you’ll have the option of having AAA battery installed on the spot at a specially discounted member price. Last year, AAA East Central installed over 45,000 batteries. AAA’s specialized training ensures every service provider can safely tow and unlock your unique vehicle. Our procedures have become the industry standard for towing and unlocking vehicles. Today’s Roadside Assistance has evolved into a state-of-the art experience that combines know-how and convenience, with safety and security at the roadside. Whether it’s changing a tire, replacing a battery, opening a locked vehicle, or towing it to a repair shop, AAA will be there whenever a member needs help. FOR MORE INFORMATION

rmed with belts and badges, they brave the elements and early morning hours. They’ve been volunteering their time for 95 years, faithfully performing their duties to ensure the children in their schools and communities are safe. Since its inception in 1920, the AAA School Safety Patrol program has provided a safer environment and a wide spectrum of educational opportunities for millions of school children. Each year, over 600,000 children participate, at more than 31,000 schools throughout the country. AAA East Central supports over 2,000 School Safety Patrollers dedicated to the safety of children going to and from school. This vital program has helped instill countless young people with a sense of leadership, responsibility and citizenship. AAA provides an array of equipment and materials, including electriclime fluorescent belts, badges, hats, ponchos, flags and training. When properly uniformed and trained, AAA School Safety Patrollers can assist their grade school classmates by ensuring their safety to and from school every day. AAA School Safety Patrol’s influence extends well beyond U.S. borders with similar programs in 30 other countries, including England, France, Germany, the Netherlands and New Zealand. The program has been recognized by safety

Many famous Americans have held the position of School Safety Patroller, including former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton; U.S. Supreme Court Justices Anthony M. Kennedy

and Clarence Thomas; former astronauts, Norman E. Thagard, Robert D. Cabana and Mary Ellen Weber; Olympic Gold Medalists, Lynette Woodard (basketball) and Mike Ramsey (hockey); and Nobel Prize winner Gary S. Becker. In his 1976 book Why Not the Best, President Carter wrote: “One of the proudest moments of my life came

when I was given a white canvas belt and tin badge and sworn in as a School Boy Patrolman.” AAA School Safety Patrol Members take pride in protecting others. Over the years twelve have received the prestigious AAA National Lifesaving Award for saving the life of a fellow student while on duty. At the end of the school year all School Safety Patrol members are recognized for their dedication toward preserving lives and preventing injuries. As the 100th anniversary approaches, AAA and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety will continue to sponsor the program through the Charles M. Hayes Advancement Fund, whose namesake founded the program, to advance and develop safety patrol programs. “AAA values our long-standing sponsorship of the program,” notes AAA East Central Safety Advisor JJ Miller. “In addition to keeping children safe, it helps to build meaningful relationships in communities across the country. As an association that values community investment, the program embodies what AAA stands for.”
