Beware of Dog: When man’s best friend is not so friendly Dogs can take a big bite out of your homeowners insurance By Robin Jones arol Lewis had just arrived home with her kids when her postal worker came to deliver the mail. As Carol opened the door, the family dog, Max, a dachshund/beagle mix, raced out to greet everyone. “Max was jumping up to say hello to the postwoman, and as he came down, one of his teeth caught on her thigh,” says Phillip Lewis, Carol’s husband. “Carol walked over to see if the postwoman was okay, and when she looked at her leg, she realized it was bleeding.” The postal worker explained that she was required to report the incident. The Lewises thought they’d simply receive a letter warning them to keep Max locked up, but a few months later, the post office informed the couple they’d need to get a PO box if they wanted to continue to receive mail. Moreover, the postal worker eventually filed a lawsuit against the Lewises to recoup her medical bills. Their homeowners insurance covered those costs. But the insurer dropped the family’s coverage at renewal time, forcing the Lewises to buy home insurance elsewhere. After a difficult search, they finally found an insurer that would cover dog-bite incidents—but the policy was twice as expensive. Dog bites postal worker—it sounds like the start of a joke. But as the Lewis family found out, if your pet bites a visitor, you may face serious consequences. In fact, according to the Insurance

BAD DOGGY — Sneaking up on the sofa is one thing, but dog bites account for one-third of all homeowners liability claims. Information Institute, one-third of all homeowners liability claims paid out in 2012 were due to dog bites. The average cost per claim was $29,752. The Humane Society estimates that almost half of all U.S. households have at least one dog. If you fall into that category, here’s how to protect yourself and your family: Make sure you’re covered. Most carriers will insure homes with dogs, and a typical homeowners policy will cover dog-bite incidents through your liability coverage. This coverage can be used to

compensate a person who is injured by your pet for medical bills, time off work, pain and suffering, and property damage, regardless of where the injury occurs (in other words, it doesn’t matter if the dog bite happens at home or at a park). If you decide to get a dog after you’ve purchased homeowners insurance, or if there’s any change in the pet situation at your home (say, your dog dies and you adopt another), inform your insurance agent to ensure you have coverage. Learn about your insurer’s rules

regarding pets. Many insurers have a “one-bite rule,” meaning that they’ll cover the first dog-bite incident, but you’re responsible for any additional bites. Others might charge a premium after an incident, or, as the Lewis family found out, they might choose to drop your coverage entirely. Some insurance companies will not cover dogs deemed “high risk,” such as pit bulls or rottweilers (or even dogs mixed with an excluded breed); check with your agent to make sure your dog’s breed is covered. Also, be aware that your pet could also cause injury by accidentally knocking someone down or causing a fall. If your dog bites someone, know what to do. First and foremost, provide medical attention for the injured person. Make sure you get that person’s name and phone number, and tell him or her to save all medical bills. Nature knows no boundaries, Costa Rica A peaceful green oasis filled with natural attractions

osta Rica has an emerald-like radiance that seems to emanate from a place deep inside the earth. Dense lowlands give way to rolling savanna, steaming volcanoes and evenings filled with stars. Humpback whales breech on a secluded coast and solemn black frigate birds hang like kites in the wind. Roughly half the size of Ireland, this mountainous nation on the Central American isthmus is home to an astonishing bio-diversity. No fewer than twelve climatic zones shelter about five percent of the world’s known species of flora and fauna. There are at least 50 varieties of hummingbird and millions of butterflies, including the iridescent blue morphos with an 8-inch wingspan. Eco-tourism has surpassed coffee and banana exports as Costa Rica’s largest industry. That’s impressive when you consider that Americans consume upward of 28 pounds of bananas per person a year. San Jose, the capital, is located in the temperate central highlands a fertile region renowned for its coffee plantations. Sometimes referred to as the “Big Pineapple,” the city is built around the “Plaza de la Cultura,” a great starting point for exploring the capital and its attractions. Don’t be surprised if an iguana comes looking for a handout at your table in the cafes around Playa Tamarindo.

CHASING WATERFALLS — The Río Celeste Waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park. Surrounded by mountains and national parks a day on the beach often ends in an impromptu fiesta with a Ticostyle barbecue and liberal quantities of guaro, the local firewater. Straddling the Continental Divide, the Monteverde Cloud Forest feels like stepping into a vast green cathedral. The elfin woodlands have been whimis-

cally dwarfed by the winds and there are millions of bromeliads, epiphytes, and fauna of every possible shade of green. Every breeze seems redolent with orchids or the pungent musk of tree ferns. Visitors can take a zip line canopy tour, which floats silently above the trees and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch

a glimpse of a jaguar or the elusive Quetzal, famous for their iridescent, jewel-like plumage. The bird’s name is derived from quetzalli, an Aztec word meaning “precious” or “beautiful.” Just to the northwest, the Arenal Volcano rises above the rainforest reaching into the sky with near perfect symmetry. The youngest and most active of Costas Rica’s 14 volcanoes, puffs of steam rise from its caldera, although the last eruption was in 2010. The Río Celeste unravels through the rainforests of the Northern Lowlands region. One of Costa Rica’s most spectacular rivers, the water’s supernatural shade of blue is the result of sulphur from the Tenorio Volcano mixing with calcium carbonate. About 50 miles away is the remote Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. Perched along the Nicaraguan border, it’s one of the best places to view indigenous wildlife, like the rare harpy eagle. Mosscovered crocodiles lurk in the shallows, while the jungle’s soothing layers of green are interrupted by the flash of a scarlet macaw or a howler monkey’s elegiac roar.

Need a good mechanic? A

s you prepare your vehicle for the cooler months ahead, the task of finding a good mechanic for routine work or an unexpected situation can be daunting.

Over the past 40 years, AAA has been doing the hard work for you through the Club’s Approved Auto Repair program (AAR). The participating shops must meet a high level of standards, and not just any auto body makes the cut. Hundreds of shops apply with fewer than half meeting the criteria for approval. Every year, each facility is inspected and visited quarterly to ensure AAA standards are being upheld. Beyond these inspections, customer feedback is assessed through satisfaction surveys to guarantee the best service for AAA members. These facilities provide a written estimate of costs, labor guarantees on mechanical repairs, member discounts on parts and labor and must pass regular insurance and financial background checks. AAA members receive a 24-month/24,000-mile parts and labor guarantee on mechanical repairs at AAR shops, can request a member discount on regularly priced parts and labor through the program and benefit from priority Roadside Assistance for tows to AAR facilities. After the tow to an AAR facility, you’ll receive a prompt vehicle evaluation within an hour of arrival and assistance in obtaining alternative transportation. If at any time a member is not satisfied with the work completed at an AAR facility, the facility has agreed to follow AAA’s resolution to correct the member’s concerns. There are some simple measures car owners can take to keep their vehicles running smoothly throughout the year. By maintaining a calendar of checkup reminders and appointments, including the items listed in the following pages, some costly repairs can be avoided. Periodic inspections of tires, brakes, cooling/heating systems and fluid levels are a must. Regular maintenance also increases fuel economy and will extend the life of your vehicle. For when your car requires more than simple maintenance, you can find plenty of reliable mechanics by choosing an AAR facility. A list of local AAR facilities can be found in this section. Before performing any type of maintenance on your vehicle, first check the owner’s manual. Familiarize yourself with the manufacturer specifications for tire pressure, fluids and filters. Replace worn wiper blades and switch to a cold-weather washer fluid. Examine the exterior of the vehicle, and check to make sure all lights are working. Test heaters and defrosters, as well, before the start of winter.

Batteries, brakes & bumpers As the temperatures decrease, so can the performance from car batteries—around 33 percent less below freezing! So, be sure to perform regular maintenance to keep your car’s battery at its best. • Clean any noticeable corrosion. Always wear protective glasses and rubber gloves, and read your manual for proper care. A mixture of baking soda and water as cleaner will usually eliminate any residue. • Make sure all cables are tight. Check the cables using a firm grasp while the engine is off. • Have your battery inspected by a professional. AAA Approved Auto Repair shops and Mobile Battery Service technicians can make sure your battery is in working order.

They are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle, the brakes, and having them inspected by a technician is never a bad idea. Modern brake pads only last about 18,000 to 24,000 miles. Before winter, do a brake check, especially if you’ve noticed any high pitched squealing, grinding noises, vibration in the steering wheel and/or longer stopping distances. Don’t forget to check the belts and hoses, as well. Check engine hoses for leaks or cracks, squeeze each and replace any that feel brittle or excessively spongy. Check coolant levels when the engine is cold. If the level is low, add a 50-50 mix of coolant and water to maintain the antifreeze capability.

Tire pressure can drop one PSI for every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature, which means checking the pressure in all four tires and the spare is particularly important in fall and winter. Check the pressure once about every two weeks, inflating the tires to the prescribed level that can be found in the owner’s manual or along the door jamb.

For bumpers and everything in between, making sure your car is clean on the inside and outside will help extend its life and value. Washing the car once every 10 days will help keep the paint looking shiny and remove the grime left over from driving on winter roads. Always use soaps specifically made for vehicles and perform a pre-rinse to remove any particles that might scratch the paint. Mix in some baking soda with the water to help dissolve leftover salt. Clean the wheels first, then move onto the body of the car. Rinse the undercarriage, and use straight line motions when washing and drying. Dry the car thoroughly using a microfiber towel.

Every 5,000 to 7,000 miles tires should be rotated to ensure maximum performance and life. Front tires tend to wear more along the edges as the car turns. Rear tires typically wear more evenly, as they follow the front tires. Also important to the life of your car’s tires are alignments and balancing. In conjunction with regular tire rotations, alignments and balancing will give you a safer ride and save you money over time.

Any time the tire tread dips below 3/32 inches, it’s time for a replacement. An easy way to check tread depth is by placing a penny with Lincoln’s head facing down between the treads. If Lincoln’s head is visible above any of the tread, the wheel is in need of a new tire. With winter weather ahead, it may also be a good time to install snow tires on all four wheels to increase traction and shorten braking distances on slick roads.

Sometimes vehicles can be as unpredictable as the weather. With millions of recalls making the news and connected cars potentially exposing drivers to hackers, keeping up with all the changes can be a challenge. As connected cars become more prevalent, making sure your privacy and safety is protected is increasingly on the minds of carmakers and legislators. Bills to make sure drivers’ information and security safe from hackers has already been introduced to require manufacturers to meet standards of safety regarding information such as where motorists shop, travel, etc. Connected car owners should pay special attention to any recalls or updates from manufacturers, according to Joe Fosko, manager of automotive repair solutions for AAA East Central. Keeping your car current, just as you would with your computer and cell phone, is key to making sure your vehicle is at its safest. All updates and upgrades will be issued by the car’s manufacturer. For general recalls, the manufacturer will often initiate a recall and inform car owners of steps to repair and/or replace affected parts. To find a list of current automotive recalls, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration created SaferCar.gov for consumers to keep track of and report vehicle issues. Even with the utmost preparation, weather conditions and other unexpected events can render vehicles inoperable. Taking steps to prepare yourself and your vehicle for an emergency may save the lives of you and your passengers. Start by programming emergency phone numbers into your cell phone’s contact list and downloading emergency service apps. Anytime you hit the road, particularly in winter, also make sure to keep the gas tank at least half full. Enough fuel and the following essentials should help keep you safe. AAA EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE AAA’s 24-hour Emergency Road Service means there is always a person to call in case of an automotive emergency. We’ll rescue you and your vehicle to get you back on the road as quickly as possible with a dedicated network of more than 13,000 Emergency Road Service facilities across the U.S.A. and Canada. AAA assistance includes changing a flat tire, jumping a dead battery or mobile battery testing and replacement service, delivering emergency gasoline or fuel, lock out and key service, or when all else fails, towing your car. We’ll provide the assistance to help get you behind the wheel again as quickly and safely as possible. No one provides better roadside assistance than AAA. AAA Emergency Road Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is designed to assist you in an emergency when your vehicle, or the vehicle in which you are a passenger, becomes disabled. Your membership coverage applies only to those emergency and towing services listed in this guide. AAA coverage entitles each AAA member in the Primary Member’s household to four service calls per membership year. After four calls, members will be charged for service. To Obtain Service AAA is only a phone call or click away! In case of an automotive emergency, call the AAA number listed on your AAA membership card. You’ll be connected to our 24-hour dispatch center or the AAA club in the area from which you are calling. You can even request emergency road service online at AAA.com or from the AAA app. To help speed our response, be prepared to: • Provide your name, membership number and your club code (215) listed on your membership card. • Give the exact location of your disabled vehicle and the nature of the trouble. • Provide the vehicle’s year, make, color and license plate number. • If possible, provide a telephone number where you can be reached. Unable to Locate the Vehicle If a service provider does not appear within the time stated by the AAA customer service representative, please call AAA back to let us know. The service provider may not have been able to locate your vehicle. Present Membership Card and ID You may be asked to show a valid AAA membership card and your driver’s license or other acceptable photo identification. In the absence of proper identification, or, if your membership cannot be verified, the service representative will be obligated to charge you for the service. This charge will be reimbursed by AAA (less charges for services exceeding published limitations) upon submission of your paid receipt to AAA within 60 days and verification of your membership. Cancel Unnecessary Calls If the requested service is no longer needed and the AAA service representative has not yet arrived, please call AAA immediately, as each service call is charged against the member’s record.

SERVICE INCLUSIONS Mechanical First Aid The AAA emergency service representative will make minor mechanical repairs or adjustments to place a vehicle in safe driving condition. If needed and available, parts and the labor cost to install them are to be paid by the member. If the vehicle cannot be put into a drivable condition to proceed under its own power, towing service, as described in the Towing Services section, will be provided. Flat Tire Service If the vehicle’s spare tire is inflated and serviceable, it will be installed in place of the vehicle’s flat tire. If not, the towing provision will apply. (Note: Tire rotation, installation/removal of tire chains and snow tire change-over are not emergency road services.) Battery Service A battery boost will be provided in an attempt to start the vehicle. If the vehicle cannot be started in this manner, towing provisions will apply. In most service territories, AAA can also quickly test your battery and electrical system. If needed, AAA can replace the battery on the spot with a AAA branded battery (at a special discounted member price.) The AAA battery includes a 3-year full replacement warranty. Fuel Delivery Service An emergency supply of fuel will be delivered to a member’s disabled vehicle enabling the member to reach the nearest service station. The member will be charged for the fuel at current pump prices. Specific quantities, brand, or octane ratings cannot be promised, nor can availability. AAA Plus: Provides sufficient free emergency fuel to enable you to reach the nearest service station, when your vehicle has run out of fuel. Towing Services When your vehicle cannot be safely driven after attempting any of the listed emergency services, your vehicle will be towed (once per breakdown) to the facility rendering the service, or up to three miles in any direction to a repair facility from the point of disablement at no charge. Charges for service that exceeds the benefits listed will be at the prevailing hourly or mileage rate for the region where service is provided. In instances when your vehicle becomes disabled

while towing a light-duty trailer, service will be provided for the trailer. You will be required to pay for trailer towing. All vehicles must be free of snow and ice prior to towing. AAA Plus: Provides up to 100 miles of free towing, in any direction from the point of disablement, to a repair facility of your choice. AAA Premier: Increases one tow to a maximum 200 miles plus a free one-day rental car. Extrication/Winching Your vehicle will be pulled out of a ditch by being extricated/winched when it can be safely reached from a normally traveled or established thoroughfare (driveways must be cleared of snow or ice). If special equipment, additional service personnel or vehicles are required, the associated costs will be at the member’s expense. AAA Plus: Provides a second truck and second driver, for up to one hour, if your situation requires it. Lockout Service If your keys are locked inside the vehicle, service will be sent to gain entrance. If your keys are lost, broken, or the service provider cannot gain entrance to your vehicle, locksmith service up to $60 or, if a AAA locksmith is not available, reimbursement for locksmith service up to $60, will be provided. In cases where the vehicle cannot be made operable, towing services will be provided according to the towing provision. AAA Plus: Provides up to a total of $100 in parts and labor to gain entry or make vehicle operable. AAA Premier: Provides up to $150 for Locksmith, $100 Home Lockout Service. Service Limitations Members requiring more than four road service calls during their membership year will be charged for the fifth call and each succeeding call at the time of service. AAA Plus, AAA Plus RV, and AAA Premier services become effective seven days after receipt of your dues. Special Assistance When your vehicle cannot be made operable upon providing the services listed in this guide, AAA will assist you in finding the nearest open place of repair. If a repair facility cannot be located, we will assist you in obtaining lodging or alternate transportation, which will be at your expense. Types of Vehicles Serviced Service applies to four-wheeled motordriven vehicles of the passenger, pleasure or recreational type that were in operation

immediately prior to disablement — provided that services can be safely delivered. If specific towing equipment is requested, but not required to safely transport the vehicle, the associated cost will be at your expense. Dual-wheel campers/motor homes are eligible for all services except towing, extrication/winching and tire service. Dual-wheel unloaded pickup trucks are eligible for all services except tire services. Rented passenger vehicles, as well as four-wheeled commercial vehicles, (excluding taxis, limousines and vehicles with snow plows attached) are eligible for services. Motorcycles are ineligible for all services. Weather Emergencies During severe weather conditions, AAA reserves the right to suspend or limit service temporarily if the vehicle is already in a place of safety, such as a private or public garage, driveway, etc. AAA will provide service to the vehicle after the weather emergency is over. Alternate Service If you have followed the procedure outlined to obtain emergency road service, and AAA service is not available, you may obtain your own service, pay for it and submit the original receipt to your AAA club within 60 days. Reimbursement will be based on the prevailing commercial rate for the region where the vehicle was disabled. In instances where the AAA contractor access is legally restricted (toll roads, limited-access highways), reimbursement will be provided for all covered services. If AAA service was available, but not requested, reimbursement may be limited to the amount the club would normally have paid for the covered service. No reimbursements will be made by AAA on charges incurred when a member’s vehicle is removed from the street or under direction of the police because of illegal parking, traffic violations, or other illegal activities. Storage charges and clean-up fees from the scene of a traffic accident are also not eligible for reimbursement. Members having more than four road service calls during their membership year are not eligible for alternate service reimbursement.

The most effective traveler information systems inform drivers in real-time of their precise location, advise them of current traffic or road conditions at their location and surrounding roadways, and empower them with optimal route selection and navigation instructions, ideally making this information available on multiple platforms, both in-vehicle and out. Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS) include

applications that focus on traffic control devices, such as traffic signals. Adaptive traffic signal control refers to intelligent traffic signal timing. Giving traffic signals the ability to detect the presence of waiting vehicles, or giving vehicles the ability to communicate that information to a traffic signal, can enable improved timing of traffic signals, thereby enhancing traffic flow and reducing congestion. Ramp metering represents another advanced transportation management system that can yield significant traffic management benefits. Ramp meters are traffic signals on freeway entrance ramps that break up clusters of vehicles entering the freeway, which reduces the flow disruptions that vehicle clusters cause and makes merging safer. Some 20 U.S. metropolitan areas currently use ramp metering technologies to manage traffic flow. In the near future are vehicle-tovehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (VTI) communication systems that gather information from other vehicles, roadways and traffic signals to warn drivers about possible hazards ahead. This is also the time of year when the sun sits much lower in the horizon and glare from the sunlight can temporarily blind you or drivers around you.
