Tailgating puts you and everyone else at risk By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central ailgating may be fun at football games, but it’s no picnic when you’re on the road. In law enforcement terminology tailgating is known as “following too closely” and this dangerous and ultimately futile practice is almost always the result of an aggressive driver, or the last resort of someone in a hurry. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rear-end collisions account for nearly one-third of the over six million crashes each year. In most cases, the driver at fault was not maintaining a safe following distance. Studies have shown that tailgating saves no time. The laws of physics and of common sense dictate that you cannot go faster than the slowest car ahead of you. Unfortunately, poor planning and driver impatience increases everyone’s risk of being involved in a crash. Tailgaters will often attempt to intimidate other motorists into driving faster than their comfort level. Drivers who are being tailgated exhibit elevated heart rates, and other signs of stress, which in turn, can negatively affect their driving decisions. Other critical driving elements tailgaters sacrifice are perception and reaction times. Perception is the time we need to see and process a roadway hazard, while reaction time is the time needed for a driver’s body to physically
T
Richard Hamilton react to the brain’s perception. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials found that it takes an alert driver approximately two seconds to see a roadway hazard and react to it. At 60 mph, that’s 176 feet, over half the length of a football field. Stopping distance is also directly proportional to the size, weight and braking ability of your vehicle. If the car in front has better emergency braking, the tailgater will collide with it, even if they both apply their brakes at exactly the same moment. Large trucks need even more real estate to allow for safe braking. The average stopping dis-

AA is helping members protect themselves from the flu this season with a limitedtime discount. Members can receive a flu vaccine for just $15 (retail price $24.99) when they show their valid AAA card at 69 participating Kmart Pharmacy locations. That’s a savings of almost $10! The CDC reports that 5 to 20 percent of U.S. residents contract the flu each year on average, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations and thousands of deaths annually. The CDC recommends annual vaccination (for ages 6 months and older) as the first and most effective step in preventing the flu. Brenda Kromer-Catanzaro, Kmart Pharmacy manager in Indiana, Pa., suggests that in addition to vaccination, people take the following steps to remain healthy this flu season: • Wash your hands often and thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds). If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. Always cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow – never into your hands. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
tance for a loaded tractor-trailer traveling at 55 mph (in ideal conditions) is 196 feet, compared with 133 feet for a passenger vehicle. Taking unnecessary risks behind the wheel could result in a crash that may seriously injure or kill you or someone you care about. A much safer and saner approach is to back off, focus on your driving and allow more time to reach your destination. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you a better view of the road, and the other traffic, so you can anticipate problems and have more time to react. Follow other vehicles at a reasonable and prudent distance and as your speed increases, so should the gap between your car and the car ahead. A safe following distance requires a minimum of three seconds from the vehicle in front of you. More distance is necessary at night, in poor road or weather conditions, or where visibility is limited. Do yourself a favor and limit your tailgating activities to football games. And don’t be bullied into speeding up if someone is tailgating you. Move into another lane or turn off the road and allow the tailgater to pass. Never tap your brakes or lose your temper as this can quickly escalate into a road rage incident. Avoid eye contact and do not make or return rude gestures. Concentrate instead on the safety of you, your passengers and your vehicle.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Clean and disinfect all frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as tables, countertops, desks, keyboards, doorknobs and mobile devices. • Stay home from work or school if you aren’t feeling well. This will help prevent spreading illness to others. Flu shots are free to Medicare Part B-eligible patients with proof of insurance. The ups and downs of your auto insurance What’s behind increases and decreases in auto insurance premiums By Robin Jones ou’re getting ready to pay your auto insurance bill when you notice that your monthly premium has changed. But you haven’t filed a claim or added or removed a driver from your policy—events you know are likely to raise or lower your payments. So what happened? It may be something you haven’t even considered. Many factors come into play when your auto insurance premiums are calculated. Here are a few: Up: You bought a new car. Newer vehicles are typically more expensive to insure due to their higher value and increased repair costs. In addition, if you are financing a new car, you will likely be required to purchase collision and comprehensive coverage (which you may or may not have previously had with an older car). Up: Auto repair costs have increased. To achieve greater fuel economy, more automakers these days are building cars with lightweight materials such as aluminum, which can be more expensive to fix than steel. And the electronics in today’s cars are costly to replace. These factors help drive up repair costs, which get passed along to insurance companies. If repair costs go up enough, insurers may be forced to increase their premiums accordingly. Down: You bundled your homeowners insurance with your auto pol-

If claims in your region have gone up significantly, your insurer might adjust the premium for everyone in your neighborhood, regardless of your personal claim history. For example, if there’s a spike in auto thefts in your area, you might pay more on your insurance due to the increase in claims, regardless of whether or not your vehicle was stolen. Of course, if you have a good driving record, your personal premium will reflect your eligiGOING UP — Newer vehicles are typically more bility for a good driver expensive to insure. discount of at least 20 percent. icy. Up or down: You’ve had your driver’s license for a certain number of years. Auto insurance premiums for inexperienced drivers are generally higher, because the rookies on the road have more accidents than veteran drivers do. Accordingly, as you amass driving experience, your rates generally go down. But at a certain point—usually after about five decades behind the wheel—driver claims start to increase again, and premiums go up in turn. Down: Your teenage driver had a good report card or just left for college. A good-student discount on your auto insurance is another reason to encourage your teens to excel in school. In addition, if your child is not planning to drive while away at college, you may be eligible for a student-away discount, which provides year-round coverage for your student at a greatly reduced premium.

More multigenerational travelers—defined as travel by people belonging to three or more generations—are opting for shared, family-together experiences and no place does families better than Disney. Kids will be drawn to the fantastic New Fantasyland, the largest expansion project in Magic Kingdom history. It features an eye-popping array of attractions including Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid, and Princess Fairytale Hall. The enchanting new home to Cinderella, Rapunzel and the princesses is located in the Castle Courtyard. Pass the intricate tiara that graces the entryway and be immersed in their world. Anyone who ever wanted to run away and join the circus should treat themselves to Storybook Circus, where families can share an array of fun-filled games and interactive wonders inside the Big Top. The sound of a calliope leads guests to the Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride. Inspired by the Disney animated film classic Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is rollicking familystyle coaster with just the right blend of heart, humor, and thrill.

FAMILY TIES — Shared vacation experiences can bring families closer together.
The new Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade rolls down Main Street, U.S.A in a breathtaking fusion of floats, and Cirque du Soleil-style theatrics. The caravan of characters includes Anna and Elsa from “Frozen,” a pageantry of Disney princesses, and a 53-foot, firebreathing Steampunk-inspired Dragon from Sleeping Beauty. Parents and grandparents were once kids too, and at Walt Disney World Resort they can be kids all over again. From daytime experiences in the theme

parks, to some midday R&R, and special nighttime events, grownups will find Walt Disney World Resort the perfect fountain of youth. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa recalls Henry Flagler’s lavish, 19th century beach resorts with gabled roofs, canary palms and richly colored gardens. In the afternoon, adults can relax in the domed, four-story atrium lobby, while kids can make a splash in the Beach Pool, complete with a waterfall gushing from a stone mountain.
Food lovers won’t need a passport to embark on an epic global culinary journey during the 19th Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Diners can sample cuisine from six continents during this 53-day culinary extravaganza, which runs through November 12. Celebrity chefs like Warren Brown and “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro will also stir up plenty of food fun at culinary demonstrations. In the evening, families can gather at the Magic Kingdom as the skies above Cinderella Castle explode in a dazzling display of fireworks during the Wishes Nighttime Spectacular. The entire park thunders accompanied by an unforgettable medley of Disney songs and the voices of Disney characters like Jiminy Cricket, and Tinker Bell, who takes flight over the park. Between world-class attractions and cutting edge shows, character breakfasts, and relaxing in resorts, there’s more than enough magic for everyone. FOR MORE INFORMATION

AAA East Central supports ignition interlock legislation in Ohio
A
AA East Central is supporting Ohio House Bill 469, sponsored by Representative Terry Johnson (Dist. 90) and Representative Gary Scherer (Dist. 92). The lifesaving ignition interlock legislation known as Annie’s Law, is named after Annie Rooney, a Chillicothe, Ohio attorney who was killed by a drunk driver on July 3, 2013. Alcohol impaired driving is a significant public health issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reported 10,322 fatalities in crashes involving a driver with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher in 2012, accounting for 31 percent of all traffic fatalities for the year. This represents an average of one alcoholimpaired driving fatality every 51 minutes. In Ohio, 385 people were killed in crashes involving drunk drivers in 2012, representing 34 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state. AAA’s recommendation to require the use of IIDs for all convicted offenders is grounded in research which shows that IIDs are more effective than other methods at reducing re-arrest among convicted drunk drivers and keeping impaired drivers off the road. According to the Centers for Disease Control, ignition interlock devices (IIDs) are effective in reducing repeat drunk driving
offenses by 67 percent. Drivers must blow into the device and register a sober blood alcohol level or the car will not start. Currently, interlocks are only required for repeat offenders in Ohio. In addition to fewer arrests, drivers with IIDs also have fewer alcoholinvolved crashes than drivers who simply had their licenses suspended. In fact, research suggests 50 percent to 75 percent of DUI offenders with suspended licenses continue to drive and have more alcohol-involved crashes than drivers with an ignition interlock device. Nearly eight in 10 Americans support requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted DUI offenders, even if it’s their first conviction according to the 2012 Traffic Safety Culture Index conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Nearly all (97 percent) surveyed find it unacceptable for a driver to get behind the wheel when they have had too much to drink. “Requiring lifesaving ignition interlocks for first-time offenders will save lives,” said Theresa Podguski, director of legislative affairs for AAA East Central. “Impaired driving affects all road users, and we look forward to working alongside the state legislature to eliminate the number one killer on our roadways.”

A New York state of mind for the holidays This year make it a Big Apple celebration
N
ew York City becomes a city of magic and serendipity during the holidays. Where the kindly old gentleman who takes a seasonal job at Macys really does turn out to be Santa Claus. New York’s holiday season officially kicks off with the 88th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 27. Visitors and viewers will be in awe of its giant helium character balloons, fantasy-filled floats, marching bands, performance groups and clowns. The parade begins at 77th Street and Central Park West and concludes with its final turn onto 34th Street in front of Macy’s Herald Square. Other must-sees include the New York City Ballet’s annual production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, complete with marching toy soldiers, a one-ton Christmas tree that grows right before the audience’s eyes and crystalline snowflakes. The show will run November 28–January 3, 2015. New York City shopping is entertainment with a purpose. From the red awnings and understated elegance of Saks Fifth Avenue to the lavish yuletide glow of Macy’s Herald Square, New York’s legendary department stores offer a window wonderland at holiday time. Lord & Taylor is known for its extravagant windows and magical animation, while displays at Tiffany & Co. have a holiday sparkle all their own.
GREAT WHITE WAY — The New York Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes is a holiday institution. Every year, holiday markets pop up across the city, selling homemade goods, holiday treats and gifts. In addition to the show, Radio City Music Hall offers visitors a chance to make the experience more memorable with an
exclusive show package that includes dancing with the Rockettes. One of the city’s most magical sights is the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. The spectacular tree frames the ice rink in a postcard perfect winter-scene of skaters gliding through a frosty haze. The lighting ceremony takes place this year on December 3, and features an evening of celebrity guests and performers. The Big Apple Circus, a New York City holiday favorite, returns to Lincoln Center October 17–January 11. This year’s show, Metamorphosis, will transport you to a realm of enchantment and illusion, where no one sits more than 50 feet from ringside, and nothing is impossible! Shop the sales and see the sites, but give your regards to Broadway. On “The Great White Way” visions of Times Square and millions of twinkling lights will dance in your head. Then there’s the ultimate New York celebration — New Year’s Eve in Times Square. The annual ball drop attracts an estimated million people each year.

your sun visor to block reflected light. Always keep a pair of sunglasses in your car to shield your vision. Gray, rainy days make it more difficult to see pedestrians, cyclists and children playing in the late afternoon. Morning commuters should also watch carefully for students walking along roadways or waiting for school buses. Lower nighttime temperatures can result in frost on windshields and roads. Black ice may linger on roads in shaded areas or particularly on bridges. Stay alert for shaded areas that could obscure black ice during early morning and evening hours. As warm weather fades, bad weather, road hazards and poor visibility can make driving more hazardous. To help you stay safe, AAA offers the following fall driving tips: • Increase your following distance in severe weather, at dusk and dawn and when in an area with wet leaves. • Check your vehicle’s headlights, tail lights and turn signals to ensure they are working properly. • Have your vehicle’s heating and wiper systems checked to ensure they are working properly. Under Ohio state law, when your wipers are on, your headlights must also be on. • Be sure your tires have sufficient tread depth in case of an early season snow.

Halloween can bring increased risks to pedestrians It’s no trick keeping trick-or-treaters safe with these tips
E
and children should look up and pay attention to their surroundings while walking. Texting and social media can wait. If you need to use your cell phone, walk to a safe area away from the street before doing so.
ach Halloween, little superheroes, ghosts and witches crisscross the neighborhood in search of candy and sweets. Traffic safety is the furthest thing from these children’s minds. “Because excited trick-or-treaters often forget about safety, adults must be even more alert,” said Teresa Thomas, AAA East Central director of public affairs. “Drivers should to be especially vigilant between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight, when pedestrians are most vulnerable,” she added. Safe Kids Worldwide reports that on average, children are more than twice as likely be struck by a vehicle and killed on Halloween than on any other night of the year. To keep roadways safer for pedestrians this Halloween, AAA offers these tips for parents and motorists.
Parents
Trick-or-treat together. AAA recommends that parents accompany young trick-or-treaters at least until age 12. Choose costumes wisely. Children are small, and often difficult to see even in well-lit situations. Make sure your child is visible by selecting a light-colored costume, or by adding reflective tape. Choose disguises that don’t obstruct vision and opt for non-toxic face paint instead of masks. Check and adjust the length of costumes to avoid tripping.

IN THE DARK — Dark costumes can make trick-or-treaters harder to see. Make a plan. Review trick-or-treating precautions, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules. Plan and discuss the route your trick-or-treaters will follow. Teach children to stop only at well-lit houses and to never enter a stranger’s home or garage. Stay on the sidewalk. Always walk on sidewalks, if available. If there are no sidewalks, walk as far to the left of the road as possible, facing traffic.
Shine a light. Give everyone a glow stick or flashlight to help them see and be seen by drivers. Cross with caution. Parents and trick-or-treaters should cross streets only at the corner, and never between parked cars or mid-block. Look left, right, and left again, and be sure that approaching cars come to a complete stop before stepping into the roadway. Put down the phones. Both parents
Avoid neighborhood shortcuts. If possible, avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. Slow down. Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed if they’re hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to 25 mph. What seems like a small difference can be the difference between life and death. Watch for children. In dark costumes, trick-or-treaters may be harder to see at night. Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. They may not be paying attention to traffic and cross the street mid-block or between cars. Take extra caution when entering or exiting driveways or alleys. Remove distractions. Avoid any distractions that may you’re your attention away from driving, such as cell phones or in-car entertainment and navigation systems.
