By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central afe mobility is essential to healthy aging and most of us want to hang onto the car keys for as long as we can. But whether we like it or not, time catches up with us all. Now an eye-opening new report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety finds elderly adults with a history of falling are 40 percent more likely to be involved in a crash than their peers. Falls limit an older driver’s ability to function behind the wheel and can make driving risky for themselves and others on the road. These findings are important since a record 12 million older drivers will experience a fall this year. Drivers age 60 and older are involved in more than 400,000 crashes annually, and it’s vitally important that we find ways to keep them and others secure on the road. Although seniors are among our safest drivers — more likely to wear seatbelts, and practice good driving habits — they are much more likely to die when a crash does occur. This research is critical because it indicates that we may now be able to use a history of falls to identify whether an older driver is at greater risk for a crash. The report, “Associations Between Falls and Driving Outcomes in Older Adults,” is the latest research released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s $12 million Longitudinal Research on Aging Drivers (LongROAD) proj-

S

Richard Hamilton ect. Researchers from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, along with the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, found that falls increase crash risk in two ways: • Falls can result in a loss of functional ability (i.e. wrist fractures or a broken leg), which can make it difficult for older drivers to steer or brake to avoid a crash. • Falls can increase an individual’s fear of falling, which can lead to a decrease in physical activity that weakens driving skills. The research suggests that seniors and their families should view falls as a possible precursor of declining physical fitness. Addressing the health issues

that originally led to the fall such as lower body weakness, poor balance, slow reaction time, certain medications, dizziness, or vision problems, can help older drivers strengthen their functional ability and lower their risk for crashing or experiencing another fall in the future. Understanding the causes and consequences of falls is essential for older drivers to keep themselves and others safe on the road. Those concerned about a parent or other senior driver should help them monitor risk factors that address health concerns or household dangers. Older drivers would be wise to look for activities that enhance balance, strengthen muscles and promote flexibility. Even a low impact fitness training program or driver improvement course can help safely extend a mature driver’s years on the road. AAA recommends a series of exercises and stretches to improve neck, shoulder, trunk, back and overall body flexibility, which can help a driver who has suffered from a recent fall. SeniorDriving. AAA.com has a variety of resources for senior drivers on strength and flexibility exercises at AAA.com/fitness. As a leading advocate for senior driver safety, AAA offers a variety of programs and resources to help older drivers improve their driving performance and avoid crashes. SeniorDriving.AAA. com is designed to help mature drivers stay on the road for as long as safely possible and mobile thereafter.

AA Roadside Assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is designed to assist you in an emergency when the vehicle you are either driving or riding in becomes disabled. Helping motorists stay mobile, safe and protected has been the cornerstone of AAA’s member commitment for over 100 years. AAA responds to over 30 million requests for emergency road service each year, and it’s important to remember there are some nonemergency limitations designed to prevent abuse while maintaining and improving our service quality. These help us to respond to your calls swiftly and intelligently and avoid excessive delays that can negatively impact service provider arrival times for all members. Emergency road service will be limited to that which can be provided with equipment ordinarily used by the independent service provider serving the area. Service will not be provided when the disabled vehicle cannot be safely reached or serviced

without damage to the vehicle or servicing equipment. Towing service is only provided for a covered vehicle disablement. Service may not be used as a substitute for regular maintenance necessary to keep a vehicle in good operating condition. AAA cannot render service repeatedly to a vehicle in need of repair. An individual’s AAA membership may not be used by a business or organization to provide roadside assistance service for its customers, employees or vehicles. The following policies apply to the membership benefit: • Towing to or from auto dismantlers, salvage yards, repair facility to repair facility or from one storage location to another. • Towing for the purpose of transporting vehicles due to a purchase, sale, auction transaction, car show exhibition, charitable donation, relocation or any other similar situation. • Service to a vehicle that is loaded, altered or constructed in such a

way as to cause damage or create a hazard while being serviced. • Charges related to impound or stolen vehicle recovery, towing or storage. • Service in situations where appropriate photo identification in addition to the membership card is requested and not provided to the service driver. • Use of two or more roadside assistance service calls to extend the member tow mileage benefit for the same breakdown. • If specific towing equipment is requested, but not required to safely transport the vehicle, the associated cost will be at your expense. • AAA Plus, AAA Premier, AAA Plus RV and AAA Premier RV emergency road service options become effective 7 calendar days after receipt of your dues. Discover the many ways AAA can help you save time and money, and provide you with confidence and security on the road. For a complete Guide to AAA Member Services, please visit AAA.com.

All you have to do is pick an available departure (there are many throughout the year) and pack your bags! Begin in San Jose, the colorful capital, and travel through verdant Central Valley to the Doka Coffee Estate and learn about this lifeblood of Costa Rica's economy. Sip samples before heading to Tamarindo Beach in Guanacaste, a Pacific-side region known for breathtaking scenery and beaches; rest and relax amid tropical greenery for 2 nights. U.S. Open returns to Oakmont Country Club The eyes of the golf world are on Western Pennsylvania

T

hee world’s top professional and amateur golfers will converge on the venerable Oakmont Country Club this month for a record ninth time at the 2016 U.S. Open. This year’s field is expected to include former champions Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Webb Simpson, Ernie Els, and last year’s winner Jordan Spieth. One of the signature events in professional golf will be broadcast to 170 countries and territories on six continents, including live coverage on Fox and Fox Sports 1. Practice rounds begin on Monday June 13th, with the four-day, 72-hole tournament running from Thursday, June 16th through Sunday, June 19th. Oakmont Country Club has hosted more major Championships than any other course in the country, including eight U.S. Opens, three PGA championships, five U.S. Amateurs and most recently the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open. The course has been the backdrop for some of the U.S. Open’s greatest moments. Ben Hogan defeating Sam Snead in 1953 to win the second of his three straight majors. Johnny Miller shooting a record final round 63 and winning the 1973 U.S. Open, by a stroke. Jack Nicklaus defeating Arnold Palmer in a playoff in 1962 to win the first of his 18 majors. Oakmont personifies the philosophy of disgruntled fictional golf course designer Ian MacCallister (as portrayed by John Cleese) that “golf is supposed to be hard.” Although nearly devoid of water hazards, and now almost treeless, thanks to a controversial clearing of some 4,000 trees in 2007, Oakmont remains one of North America’s most

formidable golf courses. Tight fairways are fringed with tall fescue and over 200 bunkers, including the infamous Church Pews — about 100 yards long with twelve grass-covered ridges — that come into play on the 3rd and 4th holes. Slick greens tilt away from the fairway at every angle, and are so notoriously difficult that Lee Trevino once

claimed every time he two-putted at Oakmont he knew he was passing somebody on the leader board. Golf Digest lists Oakmont as #6 in its most recent ranking of America’s Top 100 courses. Now a National Historic Landmark, Oakmont was founded in 1903 by Pittsburgh industrialist Henry C. Fownes. Amazingly, it was his first and only foray into golf course design. After routing the course using mule teams and an army of immigrant laborers he declared: “Let the clumsy, the spineless and alibi-makers stand aside,” words that would certainly warm Ian MacCallister’s crusty old Scottish heart. True to its reputation Oakmont exacted a heavy punishment on the field during the 2007 U.S. Open with a stroke average of 75.72, and Angel Cabrera’s winning score of five-over par. Now it’s up to new crop of young stars like Rickie Fowler, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth to prove they can do better. IF YOU GO

The 2016 U.S. Open will take place June 13-19, 2016 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont. Falling fuel prices lower driving costs to six-year low Annual cost to own and operate a vehicle drops in 2016

F

alling gas prices have driven down the annual cost to own and operate a vehicle in the U.S. to a six-year low. According to AAA’s 2016 Your Driving Costs study a driver can expect to spend 57 cents for each mile driven, or approximately $713 per month or $8,558 a year to cover the fixed and variable costs associated with owning and operating a typical sedan. “American drivers can expect to save hundreds of dollars in fuel costs in 2016,” said Jim Lehman, AAA East Central president and CEO. “Fortunately, this annual savings more than offsets the moderate increases in maintenance, insurance, finance charges and other costs associated with owning and operating a vehicle.” Compared to last year’s study, the average price of regular fuel fell more than 25 percent to $2.139 per gallon in the fourth quarter. At the same time, vehicle redesigns and improved powertrain technologies increased the average fuel economy of the sedans used in the study to 26.71 mpg. Insurance rates vary widely with driver, driving habits, issuing company, geographical area and more. While AAA’s insurance cost estimates are based on low-risk drivers with good driving records, even this group has seen rates

rise over the past few years. Lower gas prices have resulted in more miles driven, an increase in collisions and higher insurance payouts. Insurance premiums are up 9.60 percent to $1,222 per year, a $107 increase over 2015. The single largest ownership expense, depreciation, rose for 2016 due to robust new-car sales and, therefore, increasing numbers of used and off-lease vehicles entering the marketplace. This reduces retained value and

resale prices, thus increasing depreciation by $105 or 2.87 percent to $3,759 per year. Maintenance costs rose 3.33 percent to 5.28 cents per mile/$792 per year a slight increase of $25 per year. More engines are requiring expensive semior full-synthetic motor oils, along with modest increases in extended warranty pricing and shop labor rates. Along with rising vehicle prices, many states, counties and cities have

increased their fees related to vehicle purchasing, titling, registration and licensing. License/Registration/Taxes were up 3.31 percent to $687 per year in 2016. The average vehicle finance rate remained relatively unchanged in 2016. A modest 2.09 percent or $14 increase in finance charges is attributable to higher new car prices combined with increased tax, title, license and registration fees, which are typically rolled into the vehicle financing. Tire costs were essentially flat increasing by 2.04 percent .02 cent per mile, to 1 cent per mile in 2016. AAA also determined annual costs associated with both minivans and sport utility vehicles. Owners of these vehicles also benefited from lower driving costs in 2016, at $9,262 and $10,255 respectively. AAA has published the report every year since 1950, when driving cost just 9 cents per mile, and gasoline sold for 27 cents a gallon.

Produced by the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center (ARC), the sixth annual edition reviewed over 80 battery electric vehicles, compressed natural gas-powered (CNG) vehicles, clean diesels, hybrids, partial zero emission vehicles (PZEVs), and vehicles with high fuel economy. This year’s Top AAA Green Car is the 2015 Tesla Model S 70D. “The Tesla has a 240-mile range, room for five, excellent power and steering, and fast charge capability,” said John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair. “Add sleek styling, great acceleration and an air of sophistication that separates it from other alternative-fuel vehicles and you see why the Model S 70D was our top vehicle this year.” AAA’s top three green vehicles were all electrics, with the BMW i3 and Volkswagen e-Golf SEL Premium rounding out the top three. “The research center’s evaluators divided the vehicles into six categories, crunched the numbers, and identified winners in each category,” added Nielsen. “They also recognized winners by price,” he said. “The Tesla took three awards — Best Green Car over $50,000,

Five tips for a smooth car rental

S

unshine and warm temperatures offer the promise of the open road and adventure around every bend. As travelers prepare for their summer vacations, they should consider the following car rental/travel tips from Hertz when making their plans: • Reserve your car well in advance particularly during the high season. Booking several weeks before departure will help you secure the right vehicle and the best deals. With exclusive AAA members-only discounts and benefits the Hertz system will automatically assign the best rate available within the chosen channel of distribution at the time of reservation. • Streamline your pick-up. Spend less time at the car rental counter and more time enjoying your trip. AAA members can sign up for a free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards® membership, and avoid the paper work at the counter altogether. Just show your license and pick-up your keys at the designated Gold counters, or bypass the counter completely at many airport locations. Enjoy expedited drop-off with eReturn. Members also earn Hertz Gold Plus Rewards® Points for every qualifying U.S. dollar spent on Hertz rentals and optional services. •

Select the right car. The number of passengers, amount of luggage, the distance you intend to travel, the kind of roads you’ll be driving on, parking options and climate should all be considered. Hertz offers a broad range of vehicle options including their exclusive Fun, Green, Family, Prestige and Dream Collections. Check on policies regarding mileage and fuel. Unlimited mileage allows the greatest flexibility, and is a good idea if you drive long distances. Exclusive Hertz AAA member benefits include free unlimited mileage on most rentals. Most rental companies supply vehicles with a full tank of fuel and charge a refueling fee if cars are returned with less than a full tank. Customers can also opt to purchase a tank of gas from Hertz at local prices and eliminate the hassle of rushing around trying to find a gas station. AAA members also receive 10 percent off the Hertz Fuel Purchase Option. Consider the extras. Some of the ways Hertz makes your journey smoother include free use of one child, infant or booster seat, and no charge for an additional driver, if that driver is a AAA member and meets standard rental qualifications.

type and size and price. The AAA Green Car Guide is designed to help give consumers research-based information and tips to find the vehicle that best suits their needs and navigate the green car marketplace with confidence,” said Megan McKernan, manager of the Automotive Research Center. “AAA’s expertise along with the Automobile

Club of Southern California’s nearly half-century of automotive research with alternative-fuel vehicles continues to benefit AAA members and the public today.” A recent AAA member green vehicle survey found that green car issues are important across generations with millennials and non-millennials saying they’d consider buying a green vehicle because of fuel costs and environmental impact. The majority of respondents in the AAA survey also said they are interested in a green vehicle when shopping for a new car and 82 percent stated it was important to understand green technology. To help car buyers and enthusiasts vehicles were grouped into categories according to size, body type and three price ranges. They were scored by the Los Angeles-based Automotive Research Center in real-world evaluations (acceleration, handling, ride comfort, turning, cargo capacity, etc.). The report also contains in-depth information about green technologies, vehicle safety and advanced driver assistance systems.

One-of-a-kind Ford Mustang fuses 50 years of history National Inventors Hall of Fame debuts creative Mustang exhibit

F

ord and the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum (NIHF) recently unveiled a one-of-akind exhibit that marries two Mustangs in a unique side-by-side display. The split-personality pony car fuses 50 years of history by combining a 1965 Mustang and a 2015 model — both split lengthwise — with two functional driver compartments. It’s part of a new, permanent Intellectual Property Power Exhibit at the NIHF museum on the United States Patent and Trademark Office Campus in Alexandria, Virginia. The Mustang, along with other museum exhibits, celebrates the story of intellectual property and illuminates its significance to progress, innovation, and culture in America. The interactive display is designed to highlight the importance of patents and the tremendous march of technology over the decades. It calls out various patents in the current vehicle, as well as those in the original pony car. At the time of its introduction, the Mustang, shared much of its its underpinnings with the Ford Falcon, and no specific styling patents were granted. Only after the car proved such a huge success — selling more than 1 million cars in its first 18 months — were styling patents even considered and applied for over time. The 1965 Mustang had the first floating bumpers and utilized more than 100 of Ford’s existing function-

Normal conveniences we now take for granted were also involved, like Patent 3,271,540 — the origin of Ford’s selfcanceling turn signal. Today, Mustang is a wellspring of creative design and engineering. The 2015

The display was crafted by Classic Design Concepts, which combines about 60 percent of the driver’s compartment of the original Mustang and about 60 percent of a new pony car — both including the console area and technology of their times. The left side consists of a reproduction 1965 left-hand-drive Mustang licensed for modern production by Ford and built to the same specifications as the original car. The other side is a right-hand-drive 2015 Mustang that is sold in several of the 150 countries where the car is now available. Visitors to the museum will be able to sit in either side of the car and directly compare features and styling details; from the AM radio, roll-up window, vent air window, and optional retractable color-keyed seat belts available in 1965, to the working touch screen display in the 2015 model. Visitors to the exhibit will also be able to hear the sounds of the original 1965 Mustang V8 engine and a 2015 Mustang V8 engine at idle.

Mustang Convertible was granted 36 patents for styling alone, which ensure the unique look stays with the car. It also introduced the first passenger knee airbag system packaged inside the glove box door, and features like the patented relief in the seat cushion to allow more room for a wallet or a phone.

amilies across the country are eagerly awaiting the end of the school year and the beginning of summer. Millions of travelers are getting ready to visit their favorite beach destinations, theme parks, or foreign countries. According to a recent AAA survey, more than one-third of Americans (35 percent) are planning to take a family vacation of 50 miles or more away from home involving two or more immediate family members in the next 12 months. Of this group, fifty-five percent of Americans say they are more likely to take a road trip this year due to lower gas prices. Road trips (69 percent), national parks (49 percent) and theme parks (42 percent) are the most popular types of vacations for families planning to travel. Vacations to international destinations (26 percent) and cruises (19 percent) round out the top five most popular vacation options for traveling families. Two-thirds of Americans say spending quality time as a family is the most important part of taking a family vacation. Whether it’s a cross-country road trip or a dream vacation to a far-off destination, travel offers busy families an excellent opportunity to share experiences and connect with each other in meaningful ways. AAA Travel experts offer tips for families planning vacations this year: • Road Trips: AAA recommends travelers map out a route in advance to

trips to international destinations this year. The current strength of the dollar makes international travel especially affordable right now and Americans will get more for their money when visiting destinations around the world. Cruises: Cruise vacations offer a variety of activities for all ages, plus children’s programs that give parents a chance to relax and unwind. Approximately 24 million vacationers are expected to cruise the world’s waterways in 2016, one million more than last year. Experienced travel agents can help first-time cruisers identify the cruise line, ship and itinerary that best suits their family.

IF YOU GO make the most of their road trip. Drivers should plan frequent stops, about every 100 miles or two hours, to remain alert. Tools such as AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner, in desktop and app versions, can help families find AAA Diamond Rated hotels and restaurants, gas prices and plan fun stops along the way. National Parks: The National Park Service celebrates its centennial anniversary in 2016, making it a great year for travelers to discover the parks. The most popular national parks, such as Great Smoky Mountains, Grand •

Canyon and Yosemite, may reach capacity during peak travel times, so plan ahead. For families traveling on a budget, national parks are waiving entrance fees this year Aug. 25-28, Sept. 24 and Nov. 11. Theme Parks: Theme parks are a perennial family favorite and for those with flexible travel schedules, September is a great time to visit theme parks, when travelers can experience lighter crowds and shorter lines.
