The AAA Approved Auto Repair Program

Travel | Insurance/Financial | Automotive | Member Savings | AAA.com

AAA INTRODUCES NEW NO COST IDENTITY THEFT PROGRAM

October is Fall Car Care Month and AAA has identified a network of approved repair facilities that include new car dealerships and independent garages. These shops all meet AAA’s strict quality standards and display the AAA logo. When you see the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign, you’ll find highly trained technicians, a wide range of professional repair services and guaranteed workmanship. And while hundreds of repair facilities apply for the AAR rating each year, only about one-third are able to meet AAA’s rigid criteria. AAA ensures the repair facility has the right tools and equipment to provide a wide range of repairs. They must also adopt staff training qualifications and insurance guidelines. Finally, AAA surveys customers about their satisfaction with the facility. The AAR program protects members against repair failure, because all repairs, parts, labor, and components are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles under normal operating conditions. In addition, AAR shops have agreed to allow AAA to investigate repair service transactions that have been disputed by members and to abide by AAA’s resolution. See page 17 for a list of AAR garages in your area.

By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central dentity theft is a crime that victimizes people of all ages and from all walks of life. It not only robs you of your money, but of your privacy and your personal information. One of America’s fastest-growing crimes, identity theft has ranked number one on the Federal Trade Commission’s list of complaints for 13 years in a row. According to a study by Javelin Strategy & Research, in 2012 identity fraud incidents increased by more than one million victims. The study pinpointed 12.6 million identity theft victims in the U.S., or one every 3 seconds. In all, criminals stole more than $21 billion. Identity thieves are relentless in their pursuit of your most private information but now, AAA East Central members have a new tool to protect themselves. It’s a new, no cost benefit that enhances AAA’s mission of providing safety, security and peace of mind. Available exclusively for AAA members ProtectMyID® helps you go beyond what you could ever do on your own for effective identity theft protection. AAA’s Protect MyID® comes with two options: ProtectMyID® Essential, a completely free version that is included in your membership, and ProtectMyID® Deluxe, available to members at just $8.95 per month. Comparable to plans costing $7.95 per month, ProtectMyID® Essential includes these important features: • Daily Credit Monitoring of your Experian® Report — Your credit report is monitored daily to detect key changes.

I

Richard Hamilton • Email Alerts — Receive email alerts when key changes are detected on your credit report. If no changes are detected, you’ll be sent a monthly all-clear email. • Dedicated Fraud Resolution Support — Highly-trained agents are available to walk you through each step of resolving identity theft—from beginning to end. • Lost Wallet Card Protection — Securely store your debit and medical card numbers in one safe place. If your wallet is lost or stolen, it only takes a single call to a ProtectMyID® agent for assistance in canceling and replacing your cards. In addition, ProtectMyID® Essential also provides AAA Premier members with $10,000 in no cost identity theft insurance.

New AAA Top Destinations Guides

I

t’s now easier than ever for AAA members to plan memorable travel experiences and activities, thanks to AAA’s new Top Destinations digital travel guides. Available via a recent update to the iPad version of the free AAA Mobile App, the guides give travelers a fast, fun way to plan their visits to popular destinations. “These informative, interactive guides provide valuable time- and vacation-saving insight from AAA’s travel experts,” said Jim Lehman, president, AAA East Central. “They pinpoint the very best things to see and do at member-preferred destinations and enable users to make the most of their visits to these locations.” The guides also make the most of AAA’s mapping expertise, allowing users to switch back and forth from pages to map views. Top Destinations guides are available for several popular U.S. cities including Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Orlando, San Diego and Tampa, with more titles underway. The guides are loaded with

enlargeable photos, colorful maps, insider details and listings for places to stay, dine and play. Users can save their favorites to a ‘trunk’ for later reference and itinerary planning, or they can share ideas through social media like Facebook and Twitter. Travelers can learn about AAA’s Top Destinations travel guides at AAA.com/mobile and download it from the iTunes Store. Everyone who downloads the free app to their iPad or iPad mini can access sample sections of the Top Destinations guides, and those who complete a one-time AAA member registration can access the full versions.

ProtectMyID® Deluxe, which compares with products retailing for $22.90 per month, adds an extra level of protection with these advanced tools: • Comprehensive Daily Monitoring — Checks all three national credit bureaus—Experian, Equifax® and TransUnion® for new credit cards, loans, delinquent payments and more. • Experian Credit Report and Score — Lets you review your personal credit information to catch inaccuracies, potential fraud and suspicious activity even sooner. • ChildSecureSM — Closely monitors children’s personal information, and alerts you if someone applies for credit or opens credit accounts in their names. • Internet Scan — Conducts confidential, daily scans on illegal websites and chat rooms searching for signs that your identity is exposed. • Identity Theft Insurance — $1 million identity theft insurance. Once thieves have your personal information they can use it to empty your bank account, take loans, obtain credit cards in your name, or conceal criminal activities. An identity theftmonitoring program is an essential step in protecting yourself and your family. AAA’s ProtectMyID® can help catch identity theft when it happens and help you restore your credit and your good name. To register for your free subscription to ProtectMyID® Essential, or to upgrade to ProtectMyID® Deluxe at a special members-only price of just $8.95 a month, simply go to AAA.com/ ProtectMyID or call 1.877.440.6943.

The Eternal City’s famous landmarks (Colosseum, Forum, Emannuel Monument and others) illuminated against the night sky are an unforgettable sight! But, to assist your memory, you’ll receive a souvenir opera CD (1 per couple & 1 per single). Near stunning Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast, seek out a charming little town blessed by mountain breezes and sea air to visit a dried-pasta factory. Learn about the art of pasta making and then savor a dinner featuring this delicous culinary treasure in the factory’s very own restaurant. Buon appetito! Yet another unforgettable “moment” awaits in a tiny town atop one of the picturesque hills surrounding Florence. Enjoy an after-hours visit to a 14th-century monastery before sitting down to a family-style feast of traditional Tuscan dishes and local wines (live entertainment & service gratuities included!). manager will be available to offer suggestions. Journey south to the brilliant Bay of Naples. Soak in 2,000 years of history during your exploration of the excavated ruins of Pompeii. In the resort town of Sorrento, see a demonstration of wood inlaying by local artisans. A very scenic boat ride takes you to the enchanting, stylish and dramatic isle of Capri. Take a panoramic ride to its highest town, then enjoy Capri town's chic boutiques, lush vegetation and outdoor cafes before returning to the mainland for your dinner experience at a pasta-making facility. Traverse Tuscany’s picturesque vineyards and olive groves on the way to Florence, “Cradle of the Italian Renaissance,” to see Michelangelo’s magnificent “David” at the Academy Gallery. Enjoy a Diner’s Choice night — an included dinner of your choice from a “menu” of great restaurants. Visit a family-owned leather shop to learn traditional techniques in leather making and a gold shop for an informative explanation of Florentine gold. Tour the city’s architectural landmarks, including the Piazza del Duomo. In the ancient maritime Republic of Pisa you might choose, as most visitors do, to stage a photo of yourself holding up the famous Leaning Tower! Sure, it’s corny and cliché, but it’s almost irresistible...and fun! A special stop is made at a Tuscan winery & farm for a lunch of local specialties and wines. Then cross the Appenine Mountains to Venice. Cruise to Murano Island for a glass-blowing demonstration before returning to St Mark’s Square for a tour of the Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Bridge of Sighs. In Verona, stroll the streets that served as the backdrop for Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. At Stresa, in the breathtaking Lakes District, admire the gorgeous views of Lago Maggiore. Cross over the border into Switzerland

to the picturesque lakeside resort of Locarno for its views, shopping and cafes. Cruise to Isola dei Pescatori, one of the scenic Borromean Islands, for a farewell dinner surrounded by beautiful scenery. This magnificent adventure features visits to 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Pisa, Venice and Verona! Because this is such a popular package, we’re offering 2 departures:

A Las Vegas vacation is never a gamble Vegas rocks with a jackpot of new entertainment and attractions

W

hy roll the dice on another destination when you can pack an entire year’s worth of fun into one long weekend? Las Vegas entertainment includes Broadway-caliber productions, superstar performers and unique-to-Vegas production shows. Whether it’s the hottest headliner, or a trendy nightclub, there’s always something going on in the Entertainment Capital of the World. Rock of Ages at the Venetian takes us back to a time when big hair and spandex posed the greatest threats to our national security. Set in 1987, it’s the story of a young couple chasing their dreams of stardom on the Sunset Strip. Patrons can hold up battery-operated “lighters” and sing along with arena rock favorites like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” and “Don’t Stop Believin.” Country Music’s first couple — Tim McGraw and Faith Hill — have extended their limited engagement Soul2Soul tour at the intimate 1,815seat Venetian Theatre. The show will open on Oct. 25- 26 and cover 10 select weekends through April 2014. Cirque du Soleil’s ethereal combination of athleticism and special effects performs at eight Vegas venues. Zarkana, their newest show at ARIA Resort & Casino, blends circus arts

MAKING A SPLASH — Le Rêve was voted Best Show in Las Vegas in 2012. with rock music. Audiences will be taken on a surreal journey to a circus populated by strange, off-the-wall characters and death defying stunts. The story revolves around Zark, a magician who has lost his powers and Lia, his former assistant and muse. The show’s finale features 15 artistes performing a banquine, a visually stunning display of acrobatic fantasy. Absinthe is the acclaimed acro-cab-

aret variety show performed in the round at Caesars Palace. A raucous blend of vaudeville, carnival sideshow and spectacle, audiences are treated to mesmerizing feats of strength and agility while seated so close they can see every bead of sweat on the performers. Master of ceremonies Gazillionaire mixes some old time burlesque into this outlandish, adults-only show. From a thrilling high-dive to a

submerged tango, Wynn Las Vegas’ breathtaking Le Rêve (The Dream) is Cirque du Soleil meets Esther Williams’ Million Dollar Mermaid in an eerie underwater ballet. The show’s provocative choreography features aerial acrobatics, and elaborate special effects. Certified scuba divers can now experience the show from a whole new perspective — underwater in the vast depths of the Aqua Theater’s 1.1 million gallon pool. The Fremont Street Experience, located in downtown Las Vegas, blends vintage Las Vegas neon with high-tech light and sound and live entertainment. The Viva Vision canopy and light show spans the length of five football fields and towers 90 feet above the ground. It features more than 12 million LED modules and a 555,000-watt sound system. Coming this fall, thrill seekers can fly beneath the canopy on Slotzilla, a zip-line that launches from an enormous slot machine.

Newly revamped cruise ship lets the Sunshine in Carnival Destiny changes everything — including the name

C

ruise lines need to continually update their fleets to ensure existing ships match the state-of-the-art standards of their newer siblings. Sometimes these changes amount to little more than new carpet and drapes, or a refresh around the pool area. In the case of Carnival Destiny they decided to change everything, including the name. Launched in 1995, the world’s first 100,000-plus-ton cruise ship was a forerunner of a new class of grand-scale vessels. Now Destiny has a whole new destiny so to speak. The 3,006-passenger ship recently underwent a $155 million makeover morphing Carnival Destiny into Carnival Sunshine during a 49-day dry dock in Italy. The refit includes a radically reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck, the expansion of two other decks and 182 new cabins. Sunshine emerged in May with all of the elements of Carnival’s ground breaking Fun Ship 2.0 program, and several exciting new features all her own. Top-deck amenities include Serenity, a spectacular three-level adults-only retreat — the largest in the Carnival fleet — featuring a pool, waterfall, and magnificent sea views. WaterWorks is an all-new water park where you can zip down five different slides and have a splash-tastic time with 40 different interactive water fea-

EXTREME MAKEOVER — Carnival Sunshine has undergone a total makeover from bow to stern. tures, including a 300-gallon drenching bucket in the SplashZone kids’ water play area. Speedway Splash lets you slip slide away in dual, side-by-side 235-foot-long slides with racers’ times displayed on a scoreboard and special lighting effects that add to the adventure. The enclosed 334-foot-long Twister — Carnival’s longest slide — features a crystal clear turn that extends out over the edge of the ship. Diners will discover a tantalizing array of culinary choices. Let Cancun be your place in the sun An oasis of flawless beaches and fabulous attractions

C

ancun could best be described as a beach with an island in the middle. Centuries ago, Mayan emperors traveled here to get some R&R. Today, this cosmopolitan resort perched on the limestone shelf of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is among the premier vacation spots on the planet. Luxury hotels line the Hotel Zone, a seahorse-shaped oasis connected by two causeways and flanked by the tranquil Nichupte Lagoon and the restless Caribbean Sea. People watchers can take a stroll on the Malecón Américas a palm-fringed promenade hugging the shoreline. Cancun’s twelve miles of beach are celebrated for their turquoise waters and powdery white sand. All are open to the public and anyone with the inclination can walk from one end to the other. You can either hike along the northern shore by the calm waters of Bahia de Mujeres, or follow the Caribbean Sea on the eastern shore. The sand here is like talcum powder and surprisingly cool, thanks to a limestone composition that doesn’t hold the heat. Playa Ballenas is the magnificent white beach that established Cancun’s reputation as a resort, while Playa Las Perlas is a favorite with boogie boarders because of the great wave action and

REACH THE BEACH — Cancun’s 12 miles of beach are celebrated for their brilliant turquoise waters and fine white sand. pickup volleyball games. Playa Linda is the main departure point to Isla Mujeres and for the submarine and dive excursions. Cancun’s waters are legendary for their clarity with schools of dazzling blue neons hovering among the rocks and piers. The otherworldly Underwater Museum, which opened in 2010, features more 400 life-size figures by English artist Jason deCaires Taylor, displayed in less than 10 feet of water.

Shoppers can bargain for authentic Mexican handicrafts, silver, Mayainspired art and designer clothing. The majority of open-air markets are located in El Centro, the downtown area, while the mercados on Tulum Avenue are a great place to practice your bargaining skills. Party animals will want to take full advantage of Cancun’s legendary nightlife at clubs like Dady Rock, Señor Frog’s and Coco Bongo, a multilev-

el madhouse full of mammoth video screens, brilliantly costumed dancers, Cirque du Soleil-style acrobats, celebrity impersonators, conga lines, confetti canons and balloons. Cancun is close to several Mayan archeological sites including Tulum, located about 80-miles south of the city. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of all Mayan sites, Tulum is the only Mayan city built next to the sea, which provides a spectacular backdrop for its well-preserved ruins. Chichen-Itza, located about 2-hours from Cancun, was the political and economic center of the Mayan civilization. The expansive ruins cover about six square miles, and are dominated by the 75-foot-tall Kulkulkan pyramid, which functions as a giant solar calendar. During the equinox, the sunlight sends an image of a serpent undulating down the temple walls. IF YOU GO

DIY auto maintenance saves time and money Three easy fixes you can do by yourself

V

ehicles are a big investment for families — usually their second biggest purchase after their home. While the sticker price of vehicles keeps going up, the cost of maintenance has been holding steady. Better materials, sophisticated computers and other advances increase reliability and allow less frequent oil changes, tune-ups and other scheduled service. While repairing today’s sophisticated vehicles is increasingly beyond the scope of most shade tree mechanics, there are still some things owners can do themselves to reduce maintenance costs even further. Doing some of the work yourself not only saves money, it gives you a sense of self-reliance and increases your pride of ownership. A few minutes is all it takes to accomplish any of the following maintenance tasks without any expensive tools or training. Headlamps and tail lights — You may be surprised to discover how easy it is to replace burned out headlamp or tail light. For most vehicles, installation of headlamps is from the engine compartment. Just unplug the electrical connector on the back of the bulb, unscrew the large plastic ring that holds the bulb in place and pull the bulb out. Most headlamps use halogen lights, so

AN EASY FIX — Motorists can usually change their wiper blades themselves in just a few minutes. be sure to wear gloves or use a cloth to avoid getting fingerprints on the bulb. Oils from your hands can cause hot spots and shorten the life of the bulb. Your can usually gain access to rear lights through the trunk of the vehicle underneath the trim material.

Wiper blades — The worst time to learn you need new wipers blades is during a heavy rain shower. Most replacement blades can be installed with no tools, but when it comes to buying new wiper blades, you may be surprised by the choices. Technology has taken the

humble wiper blade to a whole new level. Unlike conventional wipers, the newer beam or flat blade wipers feature an innovative frameless blade design that helps conform to the shape of your windshield. Multiple pressure points provide constant pressure for a uniform wipe and the design helps resist snow and ice buildup for improved all-weather performance. Beam blades typically cost more than conventional wipers, but drivers should appreciate the durability and clarity they provide. Air filter — Air filters are the lungs of your car’s engine. Your owner’s manual will specify how often the filter should be serviced depending on your driving conditions, and removing it usually involves nothing more than removing a few screws, clips or nuts. When replacing the filter, pay attention to the direction the original element as sometimes the filter may fit more than one way, but will only work properly in one position. Something as simple as proper air filter maintenance can help your engine breathe better, optimizing performance. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Your best used car deal may be a new one Why some new car models may be more attractive than used

C

onventional wisdom dictates that a new car will always cost you more than a used one. There’s the higher price tag and you have to absorb the depreciation that comes when you drive off the dealer’s lot. If you were looking to save money, used vehicles were considered the best option. However, used car prices have skyrocketed in the current economy, which could make buying new just as cost-effective. What is behind this unusual trend? Simply put: a shortage of used car inventory. Experts suggest that the sluggish economy pushed more people out of the new-car market and into the used-car market. This has put a strain on used inventories, raising prices. Dealers also rely heavily on lease returns for used car inventory and these have become much lighter in recent years. It’s all about supply and demand. Low supply means car shoppers can expect to pay a premium for a preowned car that would usually be affordable, since new cars are more plentiful. While used-car prices have dropped in recent months, they remain high compared to historical standards. Aside from looking just at cost, experts say that buying new or used has many different benefits. Some of the advantages to buying a new car:

WATCHING THE WHEELS — AAA members can get comprehensive car buying information on AAA.com. • Reduced maintenance expense, largely because of warranty coverage; • Often lower financing charges, which can be spread over a longer loan term; • Peace of mind knowing that you are the first owner. Even though today’s vehicles are more reliable than ever, buying a used vehicle can still be a risky business. While it’s hard to beat the feeling of owning something brand-new, there

is a good case to be made for buying a pre-owned vehicle. The top reasons are affordability and lower depreciation cost. Buying used also lets buyers drive a nicer, more luxurious car than they could normally afford. Another trend that makes buying used more attractive is the proliferation of certified pre-owned programs. The idea started with luxury brands, but today, most manufacturers offer these programs. Only newer, low-mileage

cars are usually included, and they have to undergo a rigorous inspection by the manufacturer to be considered for the program. Certified vehicles are normally covered by a new warranty that extends beyond the original factory warranty. There are also sometimes special lowfinancing options for certified vehicles. Just make sure you understand what “certified” really means. Not every dealer’s definition of “certified” is the same. In some cases “certified” is just a euphemism for “used.” What the future holds for the great new or used debate remains uncertain, an improving economy has resulted in record-breaking new-car sales in 2013. This means that, in theory, the supply of used cars should go back to normal, making buying a used vehicle a better value proposition.

Taking the scenic route in New York State An autumn trek through transportation history

A

utumn descends down the hillsides of New York State, draping the woods in vast swaths of crimson, orange and gold. The fall colors draw thousands of visitors to the state’s roadways and waterways, country fairs and harvest festivals. New York has played an important role in the development of America’s transportation system. From automotive and rail museums, and World War II era naval ships, to the Erie Canal, New York is rich with historic destinations that will make any fall trip around the Empire State an unforgettable experience. The hundred-mile footpath between Tonawanda, just outside Buffalo, to Newark in the Finger Lakes, has become a popular destination for autumn hiking and biking. The scenic village of Fairport, known as the “crown jewel of the Erie Canal,” is located on the longest section of the Canalway Trail. Whether biking, boating or traveling by car, it’s fun to explore the nostalgic Main Streets, farmlands, lift bridges and multi-tier locks. As an added attraction, Niagara Falls is just a ten-minute drive from Buffalo. The Pierce-Arrow Museum offers a unique collection of bicycles, automobiles, and memorabilia — many of which have a story entwined with that of Western New York’s communities

ON THE WATERFRONT — Barge on the Erie Canal in Fairport, New York. Photo: Bill Blevins. at the turn of the 20th century. Naval enthusiasts will want to visit the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park to see the decommissioned U.S. Naval vessels, including the Cleveland-class cruiser USS Little Rock, the Fletcherclass destroyer USS The Sullivans and the submarine USS Croaker. In Lockport, the triumph of building the canal is apparent. The town is built around two impressive five-lock staircases that move boats up the steep Niagara escarpment, which visitors can

learn about at the new Erie Canal Discovery Center & Flight of Five. More transportation history beckons at the Historic LeRoy House in LeRoy, which features more than 100 historic vehicles ranging from an ox-cart and antique bikes to a 1908 Cadillac. Rail buffs will also find plenty to explore in the region, starting with the Medina Railroad Museum, a beautiful wooden freight depot filled with memorabilia and model trains. Relax and enjoy a leisurely two-hour ride

through the scenic Erie Canal Heritage Corridor aboard vintage 1947 Budd passenger coaches. The Arcade & Attica Railroad runs steam and World War II-era diesel engines from its historic station in Arcade. See some of Wyoming County’s prettiest fall colors on this two-hour excursion. One of the brightest lights shining on Lake Erie emanates from the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse in Dunkirk. Established in 1826, the 61-foot tall lighthouse, still guides sailors in Lake Erie using its original 1875 Fresnel lens. Learn about the many shipwrecks and follow the spiral stairs to the upper observation level. A restored 1800 lighthouse keeper’s home and museum feature nautical displays.

plunging guests deep into the world of dark shadows and things that go bump in the night. There are inescapable scarezones, darkly comic live shows and hundreds of frightening “scareactors.” This year’s lineup features some of the most terrifying names in entertainment and pop culture. In addition to Resident Evil, the eight haunted houses will include AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” Mexican urban legend La Llorona and acclaimed horror films “Evil Dead,” “An American Werewolf in London” and “The Cabin in the Woods.” Universal is partnering with Cabin in the Woods director and co-writer Drew Goddard to deliver a movie-quality haunted house experience that’s authentic to the film and places guests in the middle of an ancient fight for survival. Universal Orlando is dedicating its entire Halloween Horror Nights street experience to “The Walking Dead” — the first time ever that all of the scare zones throughout the park will be themed after a hit television series. The eerily authentic and disturbingly real maze experiences will place guests at the heart of the show’s once impenetrable prison, the West Georgia Correctional Facility, now overrun by hordes of flesh-eating walkers. The mazes will send guests cowering through the walker-infested wilderness that surrounds the prison and into the seemingly utopian town of Woodbury, where gruesome secrets are concealed.
