Tailgating puts you and everyone else at risk By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central ailgating may be fun at football games, but it’s no picnic when you’re on the road. In law enforcement terminology tailgating is known as “following too closely” and this dangerous and ultimately futile practice is almost always the result of an aggressive driver, or the last resort of someone in a hurry. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rear-end collisions account for nearly one-third of the over six million crashes each year. In most cases, the driver at fault was not maintaining a safe following distance. Studies have shown that tailgating saves no time. The laws of physics and of common sense dictate that you cannot go faster than the slowest car ahead of you. Unfortunately, poor planning and driver impatience increases everyone’s risk of being involved in a crash. Tailgaters will often attempt to intimidate other motorists into driving faster than their comfort level. Drivers who are being tailgated exhibit elevated heart rates, and other signs of stress, which in turn, can negatively affect their driving decisions. Other critical driving elements tailgaters sacrifice are perception and reaction times. Perception is the time we need to see and process a roadway hazard, while reaction time is the time needed for a driver’s body to physically

T

Richard Hamilton react to the brain’s perception. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials found that it takes an alert driver approximately two seconds to see a roadway hazard and react to it. At 60 mph, that’s 176 feet, over half the length of a football field. Stopping distance is also directly proportional to the size, weight and braking ability of your vehicle. If the car in front has better emergency braking, the tailgater will collide with it, even if they both apply their brakes at exactly the same moment. Large trucks need even more real estate to allow for safe braking. The average stopping dis-

Save on flu shots at participating Kmarts

A

AA is helping members protect themselves from the flu this season with a limitedtime discount. Members can receive a flu vaccine for just $15 (retail price $24.99) when they show their valid AAA card at 69 participating Kmart Pharmacy locations. That’s a savings of almost $10! The CDC reports that 5 to 20 percent of U.S. residents contract the flu each year on average, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations and thousands of deaths annually. The CDC recommends annual vaccination (for ages 6 months and older) as the first and most effective step in preventing the flu. Brenda Kromer-Catanzaro, Kmart Pharmacy manager in Indiana, Pa., suggests that in addition to vaccination, people take the following steps to remain healthy this flu season: • Wash your hands often and thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds). If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing. Always cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow – never into your hands. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

tance for a loaded tractor-trailer traveling at 55 mph (in ideal conditions) is 196 feet, compared with 133 feet for a passenger vehicle. Taking unnecessary risks behind the wheel could result in a crash that may seriously injure or kill you or someone you care about. A much safer and saner approach is to back off, focus on your driving and allow more time to reach your destination. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you a better view of the road, and the other traffic, so you can anticipate problems and have more time to react. Follow other vehicles at a reasonable and prudent distance and as your speed increases, so should the gap between your car and the car ahead. A safe following distance requires a minimum of three seconds from the vehicle in front of you. More distance is necessary at night, in poor road or weather conditions, or where visibility is limited. Do yourself a favor and limit your tailgating activities to football games. And don’t be bullied into speeding up if someone is tailgating you. Move into another lane or turn off the road and allow the tailgater to pass. Never tap your brakes or lose your temper as this can quickly escalate into a road rage incident. Avoid eye contact and do not make or return rude gestures. Concentrate instead on the safety of you, your passengers and your vehicle.

AAA Mobile App updated and improved

T

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Clean and disinfect all frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as tables, countertops, desks, keyboards, doorknobs and mobile devices. • Stay home from work or school if you aren’t feeling well. This will help prevent spreading illness to others. Flu shots are free to Medicare Part B-eligible patients with proof of insurance. Kmart Pharmacy will process most major insurances for eligibility to determine your best option. The AAA member discounted price for flu shots at Kmart Pharmacy is valid through November 30, 2014. Visit AAA.com/health for a list of participating locations.

three-quarter-mile taxi ride, Henry Allen started New York Taxicab Company in 1907. But with rides costing 50 cents a mile, cabs remain a mode of transportation only the relatively wealthy could afford. Taxicabs rose sharply in popularity during the 1920s. By the Great Depression, New York had an estimated 16,000 cabs, more than the 13,437 medallion (yellow) cabs in operation in 2014. The bulky Checker Marathon produced between 1958-82 became an icon of mid-century transportation and remains the most famous taxicab in America. Checker cabs were featured prominently in the TV series Taxi and in Martin Scorsese’s 1976 film Taxi Driver. After the demise of Checker the Ford Crown Victoria became a staple of 1990s taxi fleets, while the Lincoln Town Car remains the go-to “black car” for livery drivers. Today, New York taxis make 485,000 trips per day. In 2007, after learning that 80 percent of vehicle seats on American highways are empty, John Zimmer and Logan Green started Zimride on the campus of Cornell University. In 2009, Travis Kalanick created Uber in San Francisco, providing black-car rides at an affordable price. In 2012 Zimmer and Green started Lyft as a low-cost alternative that relies on personally owned everyday cars.

Taking the scenic route in New York State Making the most of this year’s fall foliage

A

utumn descends down the hillsides of New York State, draping the woods in vast swaths of crimson, russet and gold. From scenic rail routes in the Adirondacks, to cruises down the Erie Canal, this time of year offers breathtaking views and trips in all regions of the state. The northeast is particularly blessed with a great variety of broad-leaved trees, which help give the region’s foliage a spectacular color range. New York State has almost as many acres of these trees as the rest of the Northeast combined. The change in color from the bright greens of summer to the brilliant hues of fall follows a predictable pattern across the state. It begins high in the Adirondack and Catskill mountains in late August and early September, and spreads out and down across the hills and valleys of the state, ending in late October to early November. It takes about two weeks for the colors to complete their cycles in any given area, with peak brilliance lasting three to four days in any one spot. In western New York, the Genesee Valley Greenway’s well-known “tunnel of green” turns to red and yellow as more than 60 miles of trail follows the Genesee River and the abandoned Genesee Valley Canal through woodlands, farmlands, and historic villages from Rochester to near the

Between Albany and Buffalo more than 270 miles of Erie Canalway Trail provide an excellent opportunity to experience quaint towns and a bounty of fall color, along the state’s historic New York State Canal System. The longest continuous stretch of trail begins in Lockport, about 10 miles east of Buffalo, and continues 100 miles to Lyons along the Erie Canal in western New York. Seasonal conditions and the resultant chemical changes in the leaves are the key factors in the timing and coloration of the leaves. Generally, clear, sunny days and cool nights with temperatures in the 40’s bring about the most striking autumn colors.

AUTUMN LEAVES

GRAND CANYON OF THE EAST — Letchworth State Park follows the Genesee River as it plunges over three major waterfalls. Pennsylvania border. Inside Letchworth State Park, the river roars through the gorge known as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” over three major waterfalls between cliffs — as high as 600 feet in some places — surrounded by lush forests. In the Finger Lakes Region, fresh streams, deep ravines and densely treed areas with winding paths compliment a fiery palette of crimson, orange and

yellow. In Taughannock Falls State Park, New York’s highest waterfall drops 215 feet into a rock amphitheater. Salamanca, in the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York, is the only city in the country located on a Native American reservation, and the gateway to the 65,000 acre Allegany State Park. The largest park in the state system is known for its wildlife, primitive forested valleys, and fiery leaves.

New York’s weekly I LOVE NEW YORK fall foliage color reports began September 8, and will continue until the end of the foliage season, around the first week in November. The weekly foliage report, a detailed map charting fall color progress, vantage points for viewing spectacular foliage, suggested autumn getaways and weekly event listings are available by visiting the I LOVE NEW YORK web site at iloveny.com. Halloween can bring increased risks to pedestrians It’s no trick keeping trick-or-treaters safe with these tips

E

ach Halloween, little superheroes, ghosts and witches crisscross the neighborhood in search of candy and sweets. Traffic safety is the furthest thing from these children’s minds. “Because excited trick-or-treaters often forget about safety, adults must be even more alert,” said Teresa Thomas, AAA East Central director of public affairs. “Drivers should to be especially vigilant between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight, when pedestrians are most vulnerable,” she added. Safe Kids Worldwide reports that on average, children are more than twice as likely be struck by a vehicle and killed on Halloween than on any other night of the year. To keep roadways safer for pedestrians this Halloween, AAA offers these tips for parents and motorists.

Parents

Trick-or-treat together. AAA recommends that parents accompany young trick-or-treaters at least until age 12. Choose costumes wisely. Children are small, and often difficult to see even in well-lit situations. Make sure your child is visible by selecting a light-colored costume, or by adding

reflective tape. Choose disguises that don’t obstruct vision and opt for non-toxic face paint instead of masks. Check and adjust the length of costumes to avoid tripping. Make a plan. Review trick-or-treating precautions, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules. Plan and discuss the route your trick-or-treaters will follow. Teach children to stop only at well-lit houses and to never enter a stranger’s home or garage. Stay on the sidewalk. Always walk on sidewalks, if available. If there are no sidewalks, walk as far to the left of the road as possible, facing traffic. Shine a light. Give everyone a glow stick or flashlight to help them see and be seen by drivers. Cross with caution. Parents and trick-or-treaters should cross streets only at the corner, and never between parked cars or mid-block. Look left, right, and left again, and be sure that approaching cars come to a complete stop before stepping into the roadway. Put down the phones. Both parents and children should look up and pay attention to their surroundings while walking. Texting and social media can wait. If you need to use your cell phone, walk to a safe area away from the street before doing so.

Motorists

Avoid neighborhood shortcuts. If possible, avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. Slow down. Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed if they’re hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to 25 mph. What seems like a small difference can

be the difference between life and death. Watch for children. In dark costumes, trick-or-treaters may be harder to see at night. Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. They may not be paying attention to traffic and cross the street mid-block or between cars. Take extra caution when entering or exiting driveways or alleys. Remove distractions. Avoid any distractions that may you’re your attention away from driving, such as cell phones or in-car entertainment and navigation systems.
