Kids, Cars and Heat Are a Deadly Combination AAA urges caregivers to “look before you lock”

Sizzling summer temperatures mean things

can heat up quickly, especially for children, seniors and pets left inside closed vehicles. Heatstroke or hyperthermia can occur when the outside temperature is as low as 57 degrees!

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicle fatalities for children 14 and under. Statistics compiled by San Jose State University found that an average of 37 children perish every year from being left in a hot vehicle. Some were left behind or forgotten by an adult. Others gained access to an unlocked car and could not get out.

Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can reach dangerous levels within minutes. Sunshine coming through car windows makes your car work like an oven. According to a study sponsored by General Motors, it takes just 10 minutes for the temperature inside a vehicle to rise by 19 degrees. In 30 minutes it can rise as much as 34 degrees.

Heat rapidly overwhelms the body’s ability to regulate temperature. Children under four are especially vulnerable because their bodies do not have the same internal temperature control as an adult’s, and warm three times to five times faster.

Heatstroke occurs when the body core temperature reaches 104 degrees F, and a body core temperature of 107 degrees F is almost always fatal.

Warning signs include red, hot, and moist or dry skin, no sweating, a strong rapid pulse, or a slow weak pulse, nausea, confusion or acting strangely. If a child exhibits any of these symptoms after being in a hot vehicle, NHTSA recommends cooling the child rapidly and calling 911.

Dogs are more susceptible to heatstroke than people because unlike humans, they mostly lack the ability to sweat. They cool their bodies by panting, and dogs with short muzzles are at greater risk because of their narrow, short airways. Don’t leave an animal in a parked vehicle in warm weather, no matter how briefly, and make sure your pet has access to shade and water when you travel.

Attempts to add an element of safety by “cracking” the windows — enough to let in air but keep others out — have been shown to be ineffective at keeping car interiors at an acceptable temperature.

Make a habit of looking inside your vehicle — front and back — before locking the door and walking away. Unlocked cars pose serious risks to children who may be naturally curious. Once they crawl in, Continued on page 5

ADVOCATING FOR MOTORISTS Representatives of Pennsylvania’s AAA clubs met in Harrisburg on April 21 and 22 for their annual Pennsylvania AAA Federation Legislative Affairs events. Discussions with state legislators and senior government officials focused on issues affecting the state’s motorists, including: the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s research on distracted driving; emissions and safety inspections; and a proposal to make Pennsylvania’s seat belt law a primary rather than secondary offense. The AAA family of clubs represents almost 3.2 million Pennsylvania motorists – and direct contact with elected officials is an excellent way to articulate AAA’s positions. plane, and you’re waiting at the rental car counter for the clerk to pull up your reservation. You’re daydreaming about driving along the beach, when the clerk interrupts your reverie. “Would you like to purchase our optional insurance coverage?” he asks.

It’s just one of several insurancerelated scenarios you might encounter this summer. As you plan for your vacation, you also need to think about your insurance, to make sure you’re properly covered should something unexpected happen. Here are some common seasonal situations where it helps to have some insurance knowhow.

Renting a car Typically, if you have a full-coverage auto policy, it will apply, subject to deductibles, to rental cars in the United States. However, before you leave home, review your policy and declarations pages so you’re aware of what insurance protection you have. That way, you’ll know what you might need when you get to the rental counter.

The most common optional insurance coverage by rental car companies is Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). This CDW covers the cost to repair the rental vehicle if it is stolen, vandalized or if you return it damaged. The waiver may also cover loss-of-use fees

that a rental agency might charge while a car is being repaired. Again, if your auto policy is a full-coverage policy, you would be covered for these losses subject to the limits of your deductible.

Optional insurance coverage offered by rental car companies can be very expensive and can vary depending on where you’re renting a car. Make sure you read the contract or talk to the rental agent if you have questions about what that optional auto policy covers before you go. Another possible source of coverage is your credit card. Check with your credit card company to see if it covers any deductibles in the event of a loss with a rental car that is charged on the card.

Going on a road trip Before you hit the road, make sure your insurance is up-to-date and consider these questions: Are you going to share the driving? Check to see if your auto policy covers a permissive user–someone else that you allow to drive the car. If it does, then your auto coverage remains in effect no matter who’s driving. However, if you’ve specifically excluded someone from your policy (for example, a person who has his or her own policy or a child who’s away at college), your loss wouldn’t be covered if that person was driving and became involved in an accident.

Crossing the border? Many U.S. insurance policies are valid in Canada. In Mexico, however, U.S. policies are often invalid. If you’re involved in an accident anywhere in Mexico, your insurance company might not be able to help you. The Science Behind .05

Scientifically, however, its tragic effects seem to become truly magnified at a BAC of .05.

When the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a safety report called “Reaching Zero: Actions to Eliminate Alcohol-Impaired Driving” in May 2013, it included a list of 19 recommendations that, if enacted, could make considerable progress toward the project’s ambitious goal.

One lightning-rod bullet point, however, received the most attention by far: the NTSB’s call to reduce the legal blood alcohol concentration limit from .08 to .05 for all drivers.

In a presentation to Public Affairs delegates at the 2014 AAA Annual Meeting, former NTSB member Mark Rosekind made clear that the .05 figure wasn’t “just pulled out of a hat” and that there was plenty of science behind it.

More than 70 countries already have an .05 limit or lower, including most of Europe, South America and Australia.

• Since .05 BAC limits were instituted in Australia, Japan and many European nations, studies have shown that fatal crashes have decreased and injuries have been reduced in those countries. Fatal crashes among males ages 18 to 49 in Europe have markedly decreased and overall fatal crashes in Australia were reduced up to 18 percent.

• A 2014 study showed that in twovehicle accidents between drivers with BAC levels of .05 to .07 and drivers with BAC levels of .08, the drivers with the lower BAC levels were found solely at blame for the crash just as often as the .08 drivers.

In the Canadian province of British Columbia, September 2010 laws enacted immediate vehicle impoundment, a 72-hour driver’s license suspension and heavy fines for BACs between .05 and .08, with more severe sanctions for multiple offenders and those with BACs of .08 or above.

The results? A September 2012 study showed that drivers with BACs over .08 decreased by 59 percent and drivers with levels from .05 to .08 decreased by 44 percent from 2010. Decreases in drinking and driving were universal across all age groups, sex and communities, and 92 percent of drivers were aware of the new sanctions. Overall, levels of drinking and driving were the lowest ever recorded in the province.

The effort to reduce the BAC threshold from .10 to .08 in the U.S. took two decades, so when it released its 2013 report, the NTSB realized it was just a starting point.

In the two years since, legislation to lower BAC limits has been introduced in five states – Kentucky, New York, South Carolina, Vermont, and Washington – and a hearing on the topic has been held in Utah. None of these initiatives achieved serious traction.

A number of organizations support the NTSB’s call for a lower limit, including the American Trucking Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers, the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization. AAA agrees that the science is clear on impairment below .08 BAC. And while AAA is not currently pushing for changes in state laws, the club has begun to educate its members and the public about the risks of driving while impaired at lower BAC levels—an integral first step to changing public opinion on this safety issue.

Bicycles are associated with more childhood injuries than any other form of transportation except the automobile.

During the summer, child bicycling deaths increase 45 percent above the monthly average.

That’s not to say that bicycle safety is strictly a children’s issue. Statistically, cyclists ages 45–54 suffer the highest fatality rates. Head injuries are the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes and wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet has been shown to reduce the risk by up to 85 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

realize that in most states the law treats bicycles like any other vehicle and they should be given the same consideration.

AAA recommends that motorists double check before changing lanes or making a turn — once for cars and trucks, and once for bicycles and motorcycles.

Cutting into the path of a bicyclist while making a right turn is one of the leading causes of car-bike accidents.

Drivers should never tailgate a bicycle. Following too closely may cause a rider’s attention to be distracted from the road and traffic ahead. Don’t honk your horn. Honking near or behind a bicyclist could startle the rider and cause them to swerve into traffic or lose control.

Be careful when opening your vehicle door. Road widths often force bicyclists to ride close to parked vehicles where they may be injured by an opening door.

Rules for cyclists Because of the hazards inherent in sharing the road with motor vehicles, bicyclists need to ride cautiously and observe the following safety tips: • Ride on the roadway or shared pathways, rather than on sidewalks; • Follow the same rules of the road as other roadway users, including riding in the same direction as traffic and following all the same traffic signs and signals; • Signal all turns; • Wear a bicycle helmet every time and on every ride; • Be visible by wearing bright colors during the day, reflective gear in low light conditions, and use head and tail lights at night.

Always make sure you test the temperature of the car seat surface and safety belt buckles before restraining your children to prevent burns. Teach children not to play around parked cars and consider blocking the sun with shades for the windshield and rear window.

Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle — even if

the windows are partially open or the engine is running and the air conditioning is on. If you see a child left alone in a hot vehicle call 911 immediately, or the local emergency number.

Parents and caregivers may want to keep a stuffed animal in the car seat when it’s empty. After you secure your child in the restraint, move it to the front seat as a visual reminder. Make “look before you lock” your routine whenever you get out of the car.

Scholarships totaling $10,000 were awarded to Lindsay Capper, Jim Thorpe Area High School, Jim Thorpe, PA; Austin Glass, Methacton High School, Eagleville, PA; and Connor Mason, Western Montgomery Career & Technology Center, Limerick, PA. Lyndsay and Austin have each been awarded a $4,000 scholarship to be given in $1,000 annual stipends for study at an accredited, four-year college or university. Connor has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship to be given in $1,000 annual stipends for study at an accredited college or university.

AAA School Safety Patrol program continues to build on its legacy of safety, leadership T

he belt color may have changed quite dramatically over the years in the AAA School Safety Patrol program -- from white to neon orange to today’s fluorescent green called "lectric lime" — but the mission remains the same: To provide a safer environment and leadership opportunities for millions of schoolchildren.

What began as a small, boys-only initiative continues to stand the test of time, celebrating its 95th year in 2015. Since that humble beginning, the AAAsponsored patrol has expanded into the world’s largest safety program. Today, more than 635,000 male and female patrollers in 33,500 schools nationwide dedicate their time before and after each school day in working with teacher supervisors and adult crossing guards to ensure the safety of their classmates.

"AAA School Safety Patrol plays an important role in helping young pedestrians learn and fulfill responsibilities regarding traffic safety," said AAA Traffic Safety Advocacy Project Manager Rhonda Shah.

"Millions of U.S. boys and girls have honorably served their classmates since the program began in the early 1920s, and interest in the program has spread around the world."

deaths and injuries among 5- to-14-year olds, the age group most at risk for pedestrian injury. AAA provides an array of equipment and educational material to patrollers, including the lectric-lime fluorescent belts, patrol badges and training resources.

The program also teaches lifelong lessons of good citizenship, leadership and responsibility, as evident in the fact that past patrollers have grown up to be U.S. presidents or vice presidents (George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden), astronauts, governors, members of Congress, Supreme Court justices (William Brennan, Stephen Breyer, Warren Burger, Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas) and Olympic medalists (Eric Heiden and Edwin Moses). Many patrollers also now serve as educators, executives, physicians and other community leaders throughout the nation.

"AAA clubs across the country are very proud of not only our patrollers, but also school personnel who administer the program and law enforcement officials who contribute to patrollers’ success in local communities," Shah said.

To honor and recognize the valuable contribution Safety Patrollers make in our local schools, AAA East Central sponsored the Annual AAA Safety Patrol Night at Coca-Cola Park on Thursday, May 21.

The Safety Patrollers dedicate their time to guide and protect their fellow students while also fostering citizenship, leadership skills and community involvement. All the safety patrollers who attended the baseball game wore their safety patrol belts and participated in a pre-game parade around the field with Lehigh Valley IronPigs mascots, Ferrous and FeFe, leading the parade.

This year’s Outstanding Safety Patroller was Leah Moll, from Jefferson Elementary School in Allentown.

Leah was recognized when she threw out a ceremonial first-pitch prior to the start of the game.

AAA EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE AAA’s 24-hour Emergency Road Service means there is always a person to call in case of an automotive emergency. We’ll rescue you and your vehicle to get you back on the road as quickly as possible with a dedicated network of more than 13,000 Emergency Road Service facilities across the U.S.A. and Canada.

AAA assistance includes changing a flat tire, jumping a dead battery or mobile battery testing and replacement service, delivering emergency gasoline or fuel, lock out and key service, or when all else fails, towing your car. We’ll provide the assistance to help get you behind the wheel again as quickly and safely as possible. No one provides better roadside assistance than AAA. AAA Emergency Road Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is designed to assist you in an emergency when your vehicle, or the vehicle in which you are a passenger, becomes disabled.

Your membership coverage applies only to those emergency and towing services listed in this guide. AAA coverage entitles each AAA member in the Primary Member’s household to four service calls per membership year. After four calls, members will be charged for service.

To Obtain Service AAA is only a phone call or click away!

In case of an automotive emergency, call the AAA number listed on your AAA membership card. You’ll be connected to our 24-hour dispatch center or the AAA club in the area from which you are calling. You can even request emergency road service online at AAA.com or from the AAA app. To help speed our response, be prepared to: • Provide your name, membership number and your club code (215) listed on your membership card.

• Give the exact location of your disabled vehicle and the nature of the trouble.

• Provide the vehicle’s year, make, color, and license plate number.

• If possible, provide a telephone number where you can be reached.

Unable to Locate the Vehicle If a service provider does not appear within the time stated by the AAA customer service representative, please call AAA back to let us know. The service provider may not have been able to locate your vehicle.

Present Membership Card and ID You may be asked to show a valid AAA membership card and your driver’s­­­­­ license or other acceptable photo identification. In the absence of proper identification, or, if your membership cannot be verified, the service representative will be obligated to charge you for the service. This charge will be reimbursed by AAA (less charges for services exceeding published limitations) upon submission of your paid receipt to AAA within 60 days and verification of your membership.

Cancel Unnecessary Calls If the requested service is no longer needed and the AAA service representative has not yet arrived, please call AAA immediately, as each service call is charged against the member’s record.

SERVICE INCLUSIONS Mechanical First Aid The AAA emergency service representative will make minor mechanical repairs or adjustments to place a vehicle in safe driving condition. If needed and available, parts and the labor cost to install them are to be paid by the member. If the vehicle cannot be put into a drivable condition to proceed under its own power, towing service, as described in the Towing Services section, will be provided.

Flat Tire Service If the vehicle’s spare tire is inflated and serviceable, it will be installed in place of the vehicle’s flat tire. If not, the towing provision will apply. (Note: Tire rotation, installation/removal of tire chains and snow tire change-over are not emergency road services.)

Battery Service A battery boost will be provided in an attempt to s­ tart the vehicle. If the vehicle cannot be started in this manner, towing provisions will apply. In most service territories, AAA can also quickly test your battery and electrical system. If needed, AAA can replace the battery on the spot with a AAA branded battery (at a special discounted member price.). The AAA battery includes a 3-year full replacement warranty.

Fuel Delivery Service An emergency supply of fuel will be delivered to a member’s disabled vehicle enabling the member to reach the nearest service station. The member will be charged for the fuel at current pump prices. Specific quantities, brand, or octane ratings cannot be promised, nor can availability.

AAA Plus: Provides sufficient free emergency fuel to enable you to reach the nearest service station, when your vehicle has run out of fuel.

Towing Services When your vehicle cannot be safely driven after attempting any of the listed emergency services, your vehicle will be towed (once per breakdown) to the facility rendering the service, or up to three miles in any direction to a repair facility from the point of disablement at no charge. Charges for service that exceeds the benefits listed will be at the prevailing hourly or mileage rate for the region where service is provided. In instances when your vehicle becomes disabled

while towing a light-duty trailer, service will be provided for the trailer. You will be required to pay for trailer towing. All vehicles must be free of snow and ice prior to towing.

AAA Plus: Provides up to 100 miles of free towing, in any direction from the point of disablement, to a repair facility of your choice.

AAA Premier: Increases one tow to a maximum 200 miles plus a free one-day rental car.

Extrication/Winching Your vehicle will be pulled out of a ditch by being extricated/winched when it can be safely reached from a normally traveled or established thoroughfare (driveways must be cleared of snow or ice). If special equipment, additional service personnel or vehicles are required, the associated costs will be at the member’s expense.

AAA Plus: Provides a second truck and second driver, for up to one hour, if your situation requires it.

Lockout Service If your keys are locked inside the vehicle, service will be sent to gain entrance. If your keys are lost, broken, or the service provider cannot gain entrance to your vehicle, locksmith service up to $60 or, if a AAA locksmith is not available, reimbursement for locksmith service up to $60, will be provided.

In cases where the vehicle cannot be made operable, towing services will be provided according to the towing provision.

AAA Plus: Provides up to a total of $100 in parts and labor to gain entry or make vehicle operable.

AAA Premier: Provides up to $150 for Locksmith, $100 Home Lockout Service.

Service Limitations Members requiring more than four road service calls during their membership year will be charged for the fifth call and each succeeding call at the time of service.

AAA Plus, AAA Plus RV, and AAA Premier services become effective seven days after receipt of your dues.

Special Assistance When your vehicle cannot be made operable upon providing the services listed in this guide, AAA will assist you in finding the nearest open place of repair. If a repair facility cannot be located, we will assist you in obtaining lodging or alternate transportation, which will be at your expense.

Types of Vehicles Serviced Service applies to all properly licensed and inspected four-wheeled motor-driven vehicles of the passenger, pleasure or

recreational type - provided that services can be safely delivered. If specific towing equipment is requested, but not required to safely transport the vehicle, the associated cost will be at your expense.

Dual-wheel campers/motor homes are eligible for all services except towing, extrication/winching and tire service.

Dual-wheel unloaded pickup trucks are eligible for all services except tire services.

Rented passenger vehicles, as well as four-wheeled commercial vehicles, (excluding taxis, limousines and vehicles with snow plows attached) are eligible for services. Motorcycles are ineligible for all services.

Weather Emergencies During severe weather conditions, AAA reserves the right to suspend or limit service temporarily if the vehicle is already in a place of safety, such as a private or public garage, driveway, etc.

AAA will provide service to the vehicle after the weather emergency is over.

Alternate Service If you have followed the procedure outlined to obtain emergency road service, and AAA service is not available, you may obtain your own service, pay for it and submit the original receipt to your AAA club within 60 days. Reimbursement will be based on the prevailing commercial rate for the region where the vehicle was disabled. In instances where the AAA contractor access is legally restricted (toll roads, limited-access highways), reimbursement will be provided for all covered services. If AAA service was available, but not requested, reimbursement may be limited to the amount the club would normally have paid for the covered service.

No reimbursements will be made by AAA on charges incurred when a member’s vehicle is removed from the street or under direction of the police because of illegal parking, traffic violations, or other illegal activities. Storage charges and clean-up fees from the scene of a traffic accident are also not eligible for reimbursement.

Members having more than four road service calls during their membership year are not eligible for alternate service reimbursement.

AAA Helps Mature Drivers Find Vehicles That Fit Their Needs

America’s roadways. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) people over 50 accounted for nearly half of all U.S. drivers in 2013. Out of 212.2 million licensed drivers, nearly 93.5 million were 50 or older, an increase of 22 percent since 2003. By 2020, the United States will have more than 40 million licensed drivers 65 and older, about one in four drivers on the road. What’s more, drivers 85 and older represent the fastest growing demographic group, which has nearly doubled from 1.76 million in 1998 to 3.48 million in 2013.

This “silver tsunami” will greatly impact changes in vehicles and infrastructure design to better accommodate the needs of the 50-plus motorist. Most drivers appreciate the benefits of winterizing their vehicles in the fall, but far fewer understand that hot weather can be just as damaging to your vehicle.

Higher temperatures accelerate wear and tear, as fluids and lubricants break down more quickly.

Before you hit the road this summer, make sure your preparation includes “summerizing” to get your car in shape for hot weather driving.

Windshield wipers — Wiper blades play an important role in increasing visibility. Replace every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering.

Check the tires — Check the tire inflation and inspect the tread for uneven wear, which could indicate the need for a wheel alignment. Also look for bulges and bald spots.

Keep it clean — Give your car a good washing from top to bottom.

Use a product specifically made for automobiles. Waxing not only protects

washing easier. Check for rust spots and paint chips and have them repaired as soon as possible.

Weak or old batteries should be tested and replaced if necessary. Clean any accumulated corrosion from the terminals.

One in Three Americans Doubt Accuracy of Fuel Economy Ratings AAA analysis, test results reveal that drivers, not automakers, responsible for shortcomings A new AAA survey reveals that percent higher fuel economy than EPA selected three additional one in three Americans do not believe the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new vehicle window sticker accurately reflects the fuel economy they achieve when driving. To assess the accuracy of this perception, AAA performed an analysis of data collected on the EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov website, along with laboratory and real-world vehicle testing, and found that driver behaviors and environmental conditions, rather than vehicle shortcomings, are likely responsible for most fuel economy variances.

“For years, we’ve heard that drivers question whether the fuel economy rating for their vehicle is accurate,” said John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director, Automotive Engineering and Repair.

“In the interest of our members, AAA aimed to address this issue with a multiphase testing series designed to uncover the real reasons behind fuel economy variations.”

AAA engineers conducted a comprehensive analysis of 37,000 records submitted to the EPA, representing over 8,400 vehicle make, model and year combinations, to identify trends in real-world fuel economy. Surprisingly, among the self-reported data, eight out of 10 drivers reported fuel economy that was higher than the combined city and highway EPA mileage rating for their vehicle. Additional findings include: Owners of vehicles equipped with manual transmissions reported 17

ratings.

Owners of diesel-fuel vehicles, including light trucks, reported 20 percent higher fuel economy than EPA ratings.

Truck owners with gasoline-fuel V-8 engines reported fuel economy five percent higher than EPA ratings, while owners of turbocharged V-6 engines reported fuel economy that was nine percent lower.

Owners of sedans with V-6 engines reported a nine percent higher fuel economy than EPA ratings, while owners of turbocharged four-cylinder engines reported fuel economy that was four percent lower.

Minivan owners reported real-world fuel economy that was equal to or slightly lower than EPA ratings.

“The vast majority of drivers that submit their vehicle’s fuel economy to the EPA report mileage that beats the window sticker rating,” continued Nielsen. “Although self-reported data has limitations, it’s encouraging to see realworld fuel economy that more closely aligns with, or even exceeds, automaker promises.”

In conducting this analysis, AAA engineers identified a list of vehicles that were frequently reported as failing to achieve the EPA’s mileage rating. The majority of these vehicles, including the scrutinized Hyundai and Kia models, have since been retested and, in some cases, mileage ratings were revised. AAA

vehicles – a 2014 full-size pickup truck, a 2014 large sedan and a 2012 medium sedan – for further testing.

In partnership with the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center, AAA tested the vehicles independently to verify the fuel economy.

Over the course of several weeks, testing was conducted using a certified dynamometer and on the streets of Southern California.

Test results from of all three vehicles confirmed the EPA mileage rating was accurate, leaving AAA to conclude that driving behaviors, vehicle condition, driving environment and terrain are likely responsible for most deviations from EPA ratings that consumers experience.

“In addition to logging hundreds of miles in various driving environments, the research team put the vehicles through EPA-specified testing designed to mimic the real-world conditions, including city, highway and aggressive driving,” said Megan McKernan, manager of the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center.

“The findings indicate that while vehicles tested are capable of achieving the EPA rating, a driver’s real-world mileage will vary based on driving style.”

In the next phase of AAA’s fuel economy testing series, to be released in late 2015, researchers will measure the impact that specific driving behaviors, such as acceleration rates and idle time, have on an individual driver’s fuel economy. In the meantime, AAA recommends that drivers take a closer look at their driving habits to understand the role they play in the fuel efficiency of their vehicle.

“If you drive aggressively, with heavy acceleration, hard braking and driving at higher speeds, your fuel economy is going to suffer,” continued Nielsen.

“Driving just five miles per hour above 50 is like paying an additional 19 cents per gallon for gasoline.”

Work Zone Safety Summertime is prime time for road

repair. As you navigate around town, or to a vacation destination, be mindful of the hardworking highway crews along the roadside.

Earlier this year, PennDOT announced its #Slow4Zone social media campaign, which spotlights department employees and reminds drivers why it is important to pay attention and slow down in work zones.

PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said, “Work on our roadways is essential to keep people and commerce flowing, but drivers need to remember that it isn’t just equipment that they see in work zones – there are people. Work zones may be a temporary inconvenience, but these workers deserve our full attention and safest driving.”

Preliminary PennDOT data shows that 24 people were killed in work-zone crashes in 2014, eight more than in 2013.

Since 1970, 85 PennDOT employees have died in the line of duty.

Additionally, the same data shows there were 1,841 crashes in work zones last year, a slight decrease from the 1,851 crashes in 2013. Over the five-year period, there were 10,586 work-zone crashes and 128 fatalities in those crashes.

In addition to crash data from police reports, PennDOT monitors work-zone safety with internal reports. In 2014,

Speed-Monitoring Devices. Interstate work zones with a project cost exceeding $300,000 will have a speedmonitoring device to alert motorists of their speed prior to entering the work zone.

ACTIVE WORK ZONES Posting of Active Work Zones. Active work zones must be designated as such to notify motorists when they enter and leave the work zone. A white flashing light attached to the “Active Work Zone When Flashing” sign will indicate an active

Fines Doubled/Jail Time Increased.

Fines for certain traffic violations – including speeding, driving under the influence, and failure to obey traffic devices – are doubled for active work zones. Also, the law provides for up to five years of additional jail time for individuals convicted of homicide by vehicle for a crash that occurred in an active work zone.

In 2014, 377 suspensions were imposed on motorists for work-zone violations.

To further underscore the importance of the lives of people working on the state’s transportation system, PennDOT’s #Slow4Zone initiative will feature employees from across the state who have witnessed or been injured in work-zone crashes, or who have a message for motorists. The campaign emphasizes that each employee is a mother, youth mentor or family member who wants to get home safely each day.
