AAA Mobile also features easy access to hotels and car rentals, maps and routing tools, trip-planning resources from AAA travel experts, current gas prices, exclusive member discounts and more. Seniors need to safeguard their assets from fraudsters Steps you can take to protect your nest egg

F

or many Americans, it’s hard to eke out a living and secure a nest egg for retirement. Fortunately, there are plenty of financial experts offering advice on how to save for the “golden years.” But that’s definitely not the case when it comes to skilled professionals with solutions on how to safeguard your life savings from identity theft. If you are retired or are close to retirement, protecting your nest egg from identity thieves is more vital today than ever, as is becoming aware of the different scams fraudsters use to separate you from your money. Here are some steps to preserve your investments: If you get a call from someone you don’t know to donate funds to a surefire investment opportunity, hang up the phone. A legitimate financial institution won’t just call you out of the blue with a windfall opportunity. Find a secure place to store Social Security numbers and medical information. Carry only necessary information in your wallet. If you get checks in the mail, such as Social Security, arrange to have them deposited directly into your bank account. Identity thieves are known to watch seniors’ mailboxes. Love your family members, but be aware that the majority of identity theft against seniors can be attributed to friends, family members or caretakers. It’s sad, but true, that the people closest to you have the highest probability of

A nice surprise — Life insurance may cost less than you think There are ways to make life insurance more affordable By Robin Jones hen Mike Richards found out that his wife, Linda, was having twins, he figured it was time to buy some life insurance. He wanted to ensure his family’s financial security and know that his mortgage and kids’ college tuition would be covered if something were to happen to him. And he understood that he had to jump on it. “I knew the longer I waited, the more expensive it would be,” he says. But his policy cost less than he expected. “I was really surprised it wasn’t higher,” he says. His experience is common. Yet many people don’t purchase life insurance because they worry about the cost. Worldwide research and consulting company LIMRA recently found that 85 percent of people who didn’t have life insurance chose not to buy it because they thought it’d be too expensive. Seventy-eight percent of those who already had some life insurance didn’t buy more for the same reason. But LIMRA also found that the average cost of a 20-year $250,000 term life insurance policy for a healthy 30-yearold was $400 per year. That’s about $33 per month, less than most 30-year-olds spend on one dinner out with friends. Here are a few ways to make life insurance even more affordable. Buy early — Age is probably the most important factor in determining cost. Youth is generally an advantage. For

W

FAMILY MATTERS — Life insurance can guarantee your family’s future. example, the policy that costs a healthy 30-year-old $400 a year could cost a healthy 50-year-old closer to $1,500. So it’s best to buy coverage as soon as someone depends on your income, whether that’s a spouse or a child. If you purchase your policy when you’re young and healthy, consider locking in your low rate for as long as possible. The right term life policy might let you keep your premium low for up to 30 years. A permanent policy like whole life or universal life might go longer. Stay healthy — Health is generally the second most important thing insur-

ers consider when they set premiums. Most companies will charge smokers and the obese more. Rates also increase for those with other health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes. However, if you can show that you take care of yourself—by maintaining a healthy diet or exercise routine—most insurers will keep your premium low. If you’re healthy, think about individual term insurance — A group policy through your workplace will usually cost more because it has to cover the unhealthy people in the group. Don’t overbuy — Purchasing too lit-

tle life insurance risks leaving your family in a position where they can’t pay the bills. But premiums rise as coverage increases, which is why it’s important to meet with an experienced life insurance agent who can help you decide how much life insurance is right and explain the various life insurance products that may be available to you. Consider a convertible term policy — Term life insurance, which covers you for a limited amount of time (a term), is usually less expensive than whole life or universal life. Those plans are referred to as permanent, because they can cover you for your entire life. Many people opt for term insurance because it’s more affordable. If you do decide to purchase term life insurance, make sure it’s a convertible policy: one that starts off as term insurance but can be converted to permanent insurance without having to re-qualify for the policy when you’re ready for a permanent policy.

Ride with Hertz, park for free at Hertz rental locations

H

ow would you rather spend $35 in Chicago — paying the average price to park your car for the day, or taking in the Chicago skyline from the top of Navy Pier’s iconic Ferris wheel? No matter the city, expensive parking fees and the time spent searching for a spot can be a real hassle. Parking prices have climbed over the years, as cities and neighborhoods expand and develop, cashing in on parking fees. Major U.S. cities and top tourist spots have some of the highest daily parking rates, according to the most recent Colliers International Parking Rate Survey. Honolulu, New York City, and Chicago will cost drivers the most when it comes to securing a place to park. Median daily parking rates run the highest at about $42 in Honolulu, about $31 in the Big Apple and just less than $30 in Los Angeles. Whether you’re planning to drive to your destination, or renting a car when you arrive, booking with Hertz saves. A Hertz car gives renters access to parking at all Hertz rental locations, saving time and money. AAA members also receive up to

20 percent off rentals, free unlimited mileage on most vehicles, a free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Membership and a free rental day. Save your cash for doing the things you love! The Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program allows members to bypass the counter at the airport, pick up the rental with a driver’s license and hit the road. Drop-off is faster with eReturn, and upgrades and updates are available right on your cell phone. As one of the nation’s top green companies, according to Newsweek, Hertz’s fleet of fuel-efficient cars will go easy on the environment and take you farther without setting back your wallet. Even Hertz offices are becoming more environmentally friendly. Last year alone, Hertz offices recycled more than 2 million gallons of used oil and auto waste, recycled 414,000 tires and used reclaimed water in 80 percent of their car washes. With 15 solar locations nationwide, and five additional solar offices in the works, Hertz is driving change toward sustainability. For details on all Hertz discounts, visit AAA.com/Hertz.

Welcome to your new favorite credit card The AAA Member Rewards Visa® can be very rewarding

T

he purchases you make every day will reward you when you use the AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card. There’s no limit on how much you can earn and no spending categories that change quarterly. The Member Rewards card can be used for everything from your gym membership to your phone bill to a family vacation. Any purchases you make will earn points. Depending on what you purchase, you’ll get at least one point for every dollar you spend. If you use the credit card to make purchases at the grocery store, drug store or at the gas pump – and who doesn’t have these expenses on a regular basis – you will earn two points for every dollar spent. Where the credit card gets really rewarding is when you use it to make qualifying purchases at AAA, including travel, merchandise and insurance. Every dollar spent with AAA on qualified purchases earns three points. Next time you have to renew your membership, why not use the card and earn triple points? You can start redeeming those points for 1% cash back starting with as few as 5,000 points. To illustrate, if you spend $100 a week at the grocery store, over the course of a year you’ll have spent $5,200. At 2 points per $1, that comes out to 10,400 points or $104 cash back. See how fast your points can add up?

MORE REWARDING — The AAA Member Rewards Visa® card lets you earn points on your purchases. There’s no end to how the Member Rewards card can work in your favor. Use it to purchase large ticket items or to pay for your travel arrangements. It makes sense to use a credit card with reward points rather than writing a check for a large amount. It’s money back in your pocket. The Member Rewards card comes with a lot of flexibility, too. Cardholders can choose to redeem points for a variety of options. Exclusive rewards include AAA vouchers good for trav-

el, car repairs at AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities, gift cards, a statement credit, car rentals and hotel stays in the U.S. Using a credit card to pay for everyday purchases can also be safer than carrying cash or using a debit card. If lost or stolen, Member Rewards Visa cardholders have zero liability protection against fraudulent purchases. Right now, there’s more reason than ever before to apply for the card. When you open up a new account in one of

our AAA branch offices, you’ll qualify for a $100 statement credit if you make at least $250 in purchases within 90 days of activating the account. It’s a great offer, exclusive for our members. Here at AAA, we believe that financial rewards and benefits are what our members have come to expect. The Member Rewards credit card is just one of the many reasons your membership has real value. For information about rates, fees, other costs and benefits associated with the use of this credit card, or to apply, visit a AAA branch office. Earn 1 point per dollar of new net retail purchase transactions (qualifying purchases less credits, returns and adjustments) charged to the card each billing cycle. Earn 2 points per dollar for purchases made with the card at any eligible gas, grocery or pharmacy retail merchant categories as designated by Bank of America. Earn 3 points per dollar for purchases made with the card through any participating AAA Club when AAA is the merchant of record, or at eligible retail travel merchant categories as designated by Bank of America. Points expire (5) years from the end of the billing cycle during which the points were earned. Additional restrictions apply. Details accompany new account materials. Take Travel Insurance for the entire family No charge for children 17 and under with TripAssist Family Care

raveling abroad can be a rewarding experience. But unexpected events can sometimes spoil even the most carefully crafted vacation. What if you’re suddenly unable to go because of an illness to a non-traveling loved one? What do you do if your luggage is lost or stolen, or you or a family member are injured while away from home? With features like comprehensive trip cancellation and primary emergency medical coverage, and 24 hour travel assistance, the Family Care Plan from Allianz Global Assistance, is the perfect traveling companion. And there’s no charge for kids 17 and under when traveling with parents or grandparents, and no surprise processing fees! This makes travel insurance premiums more affordable, for families with young children. Should your luggage fail to arrive when you do, baggage loss and damage coverage is $1,000 — double that of comparable packages. Baggage delay coverage has been increased to $300, a 50 percent improvement over previous plans. TripAssist Family Care also protects your travel investment if your trip is delayed or cancelled for a covered reason, such as a major injury, jury duty or other unforeseen circumstances. Recent additions to this plan include reimbursement of Frequent Flyer miles and associated airline fees, and vehicle return coverage if your road trip is interrupted.

NO WORRIES — If something does happen on your vacation, you want to be prepared. Medical treatment on your domestic or overseas vacation may leave you with expensive out-of-pocket expenses. TripAssist Family Care includes $25,000 in primary medical coverage for emergency medical costs during your travels. There’s no need to file claims with your regular health insurer first. Emergency medical evacuation can be a lifesaver when traveling to a destination where health care is not up to U.S.

standards. TripAssist Family Care will reimburse you for transportation costs to the medical facility and back home, up to $500,000. An array of optional benefits helps you tailor a plan to your own specific needs. TripAssist Family Care Trip+ is ideal for families traveling abroad. It doubles many of the Family Care Plan’s post departure benefits including missed connection coverage, travel delay, emer-

gency medical coverage and transportation, and baggage loss/damage or delay. For just a few dollars a day Rental Car Damage Protector provides primary coverage for covered collision, loss and damage, along with 24 hour emergency assistance. The Required to Work option provides trip cancellation and interruption coverage when your travel plans change for a variety of work related issues. The Cancel Anytime option offers greater flexibility than a traditional trip cancellation policy because it allows you to cancel your trip for almost any reason that the Family Care Plan does not already cover and receive 80% of a nonrefundable trip costing up to $10,000 back in cash. TripAssist Theme Park Protection is a low-cost travel insurance plan intended for AAA members planning trips to domestic amusement parks. It has appropriate levels of cancellation coverage, medical protection, and convenience services for most trips to amusement parks within the United States. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Several factors can affect the cost of any travel insurance policy. Before deciding on a plan, be sure you understand what you’re buying and what each policy does and does not cover. For more information, visit AAA.com/travelinsurance.

Step off the plane in Lisbon; its charms and style make it one of Europe’s last “undiscovered” capitals, and it invariably surprises and delights visitors. Wind your way among its hilly, narrow alleys aboard a similarly narrow streetcar to find neighborhood taverns where traditional fado vocalists reveal the soulful depths of the Portuguese personality. A guided tour of Lisbon features the Moorish Alfama Quarter, Jerónimo’s Monastery (a Unesco World Heritage site), the Monument to the Discoveries and the Tower of Belém. On the Silver Coast, visit the pilgrimage town of Fátima, a testament to Portugal’s Catholic heritage. View Batalha Monastery (UWH) and visit quaint

See the westernmost point in continental Europe, the PORTUGUESE POTTERY rugged coastline, wind surfers and Estoril, known for luxurious homes & gardens.

SPAIN

Once a global empire and colonial power, Spain ruled many parts of the world throughout history. Today, it’s a country with an unhurried, relaxed atmosphere — and a place welcoming to travelers from all over the world. You’ll sense its former glory and its present hospitality on your tour of Madrid, the vibrant capital, especially at its lively and historic center (the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor). After a fascinating tour of the Royal Palace’s lavish halls, banquet rooms, throne room, armory and courtyard, travel south to Toledo, a UWH site and Spain’s glorious medieval capital. Marvel at its Gothic cathedral, a 13th-century synagogue and Santo Tomé (church home of El Greco’s The Burial of Count Orgaz). Tour the Mezquita (UWH), an architectural marvel built by the Moors in the 8th century as a magnificent mosque, which then became the city’s cathedral in the 16th century. See also its well-preserved Jewish Quarter. In Seville, Spain’s “cultural capital,” see Columbus’ tomb, the ornate cathedral (UWH) and Giralda Bell Tower. Enjoy a walking tour of quaint old Santa Cruz Quarter with its bright flowers, white-washed buildings and winding streets. Visit Plaza de España and María Luisa Park, one of Europe’s loveliest. Top it off with regional cuisine and an unforgettable flamenco performance by Seville’s top dancers. Another UWH site awaits at Granada’s immense hilltop palace; Alhambra is a marvel of geometric patterns, tilework, fountains and gardens. In Valencia, a treasure trove of Roman and Arabic architecture surrounded by citrus groves, visit Lladro and learn about the history and making of its world-famous porcelain figurines. A “paella experience” reveals where this Valencia rice & seafood dish originated and how it’s made — and includes a tasty paella lunch! Last but not least, Barcelona buzzes with life! Celebrating a century of AAA Roadside Assistance AAA has been helping stranded motorists for 100 years

E

ver since there have been cars, there has been car trouble — flat tires, dead batteries, blown radiator hoses and more. The earliest cars were notoriously unreliable, and drivers often found themselves stranded. AAA came to rescue when it introduced Roadside Assistance — 100 years ago this year. In 1915, the Automobile Club of St. Louis — now AAA Missouri — launched its “First Aid Corps.” The club deployed mechanics on motorcycles to assist stranded drivers. AAA clubs across the country quickly recognized the value and AAA’s trusted emergency road service network was born. Today, AAA responds to more than 30 million calls for help each year, with AAA East Central handling more than 1.25 million of those throughout its five-state region. Early calls were recorded on paper and placed on a conveyor belt to a dispatcher. Later, AAA pioneered the use of radio dispatching right after World War II. Today, AAA uses the latest technology to make the roadside experience completely seamless. Advanced AAA call centers use computer-based systems to track and monitor calls and to dispatch and communicate with service providers. Members can now receive calls or texts to keep them updated on the loca-

Or they can use the AAA Mobile app’s Truck Tracker feature on their mobile device to ease roadside anxiety. “AAA understands the role that technology plays in our daily lives,” notes Jim Lehman, president AAA East Central. “Members feel vulnerable when they experience a breakdown, and the Truck Tracker function on the

AAA Mobile app offers the added benefit of knowing exactly when help will arrive.” Should you lock your keys in your car, experience a flat, need a jumpstart, or a tow call 1-800-AAA-HELP, or request Roadside Assistance online. Your membership covers you, not your vehicle, so you can call whether you’re in your own car, a friend’s, or a rental,

and whether you’re the driver or a passenger. If your vehicle won’t start, AAA’s Mobile Battery Service provides convenient mobile battery testing on the roadside, using state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. Should the battery need to be replaced, you’ll have the option of having AAA battery installed on the spot at a specially discounted member price. Last year, AAA East Central installed over 45,000 batteries. AAA’s specialized training ensures every service provider can safely tow and unlock your unique vehicle. Our procedures have become the industry standard for towing and unlocking vehicles. Today’s Roadside Assistance has evolved into a state-of-the art experience that combines know-how and convenience, with safety and security at the roadside. Whether it’s changing a tire, replacing a battery, opening a locked vehicle, or towing it to a repair shop, AAA will be there whenever a member needs help. FOR MORE INFORMATION

rmed with belts and badges, they brave the elements and early morning hours. They’ve been volunteering their time for 95 years, faithfully performing their duties to ensure the children in their schools and communities are safe. Since its inception in 1920, the AAA School Safety Patrol program has provided a safer environment and a wide spectrum of educational opportunities for millions of school children. Each year, over 600,000 children participate, at more than 31,000 schools throughout the country. AAA East Central supports over 2,000 School Safety Patrollers dedicated to the safety of children going to and from school. This vital program has helped instill countless young people with a sense of leadership, responsibility and citizenship. AAA provides an array of equipment and materials, including electriclime fluorescent belts, badges, hats, ponchos, flags and training. When properly uniformed and trained, AAA School Safety Patrollers can assist their grade school classmates by ensuring their safety to and from school every day. AAA School Safety Patrol’s influence extends well beyond U.S. borders with similar programs in 30 other countries, including England, France, Germany, the Netherlands and New Zealand. The program has been recognized by safety

Many famous Americans have held the position of School Safety Patroller, including former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton; U.S. Supreme Court Justices Anthony M. Kennedy

and Clarence Thomas; former astronauts, Norman E. Thagard, Robert D. Cabana and Mary Ellen Weber; Olympic Gold Medalists, Lynette Woodard (basketball) and Mike Ramsey (hockey); and Nobel Prize winner Gary S. Becker. In his 1976 book Why Not the Best, President Carter wrote: “One of the proudest moments of my life came

when I was given a white canvas belt and tin badge and sworn in as a School Boy Patrolman.” AAA School Safety Patrol Members take pride in protecting others. Over the years twelve have received the prestigious AAA National Lifesaving Award for saving the life of a fellow student while on duty. At the end of the school year all School Safety Patrol members are recognized for their dedication toward preserving lives and preventing injuries. As the 100th anniversary approaches, AAA and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety will continue to sponsor the program through the Charles M. Hayes Advancement Fund, whose namesake founded the program, to advance and develop safety patrol programs. “AAA values our long-standing sponsorship of the program,” notes AAA East Central Safety Advisor JJ Miller. “In addition to keeping children safe, it helps to build meaningful relationships in communities across the country. As an association that values community investment, the program embodies what AAA stands for.”

Missouri is a fall tapestry of color

W

hen the long days of summer give way to frosttinged evenings, autumn can’t be too far around the corner. The sun falls more gently on your back and the fields are gilded with the gold of Indian summer. Tranquility hangs like a harvest moon over the crisp nights and by September, yellow leaves begin to show themselves like the first gray hair. Whether you have a weekend or more to spend, Missouri is a tapestry of color in the fall. Autumn descends down the mountainsides, draping the woods in vast swaths of crimson, orange and gold. Destinations include serene villages tucked beside wooded slopes, sprawling state parks and forests, and scenic drives through rolling, leaf-mottled landscapes. Missouri’s fall color season usually lasts from four to six weeks. The state is blessed with a great variety of trees, shrubs, and vines and their leaves turn at different times. Sassafras, sumac, Virginia creeper — even poison ivy — are some of the first to turn, beginning in mid-September. By late September, black gum, bittersweet, and dogwood are changing. Fall color usually peaks around mid-October when maples, ashes, oaks, and hickories are at the height of their fall display. Leaf colors are typically determined by the species of tree. Maples tend to turn red and orange, hickories golden yellow, and oaks russet and bronze. The effect is pure magic — blazing, multi-colored landscapes that stir the imagination and lift the spirit. Visitors can choose routes along rivers with spectacular vistas and forested bluffs, or along the ridges. Travel on back roads, hike hidden trails, or take a float trip in one of the state parks under a multihued forest canopy. The remains of a huge, circa 1905 European-style stone castle lends an air of mystery to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. Situated atop towering bluffs, the views of the Lake of the Ozarks are majestic. More than 15 miles of winding trails take you past caves, a spring, sinkholes, a natural bridge and down to the lake. Castlewood State Park straddles the lush valley of the Meramec River. The park is a haven for hikers and is one of the best mountain-biking locations in the St. Louis area. A substance called chlorophyll gives leaves their green color. When fall comes, the tree’s sap supply diminishes and the chlorophyll fades. This fading unveils yellows, oranges, and browns. Red results from sap trapped in the leaf cells during cool nights followed by sunny days. Radiocarbon dating indicates Graham Cave State Park’s shelter cave was inhabited more than 10,000 years ago. Located two miles west of Danville along the Loutre River, it features camping, hiking and mountain-biking trails. Native Americans explored the meaning of autumn in the myth of the Great Bear. Hunters killed the bear in the sky spilling its blood into the forest,

staining the leaves red. Giant, billion-year-old granite boulders stand end-to-end, like a train of red pachyderms in Elephant Rocks State Park. Spend some time reading the inscriptions carved into the red granite by 19th century miners who worked in the area. A self-guiding trail (with Braille signage) winds among these geologic wonders and takes you past what

remains of the long-dead mining operation. The park is located off of Route 21, four miles north of Pilot Knob. At an elevation of 1,772 feet, Taum Sauk Mountain State Park is the highest point in Missouri. Mina Sauk Falls, the state’s highest wet-weather waterfall, is a highlight and in autumn the falls are cloaked in a mantle of scarlet, orange and gold and the somber magic of

those enduring old hills. The park is located off Route 21, nine miles southwest of Ironton on Route CC. Beneath nature’s bright couture, there’s a tinge of loneliness to the landscape, a chilly reminder that Missouri‘s fall foliage only lasts a short time — about six-weeks from start to finish. You need to see it quickly, because soon it will be gone.

f a car is on your teen’s back-toschool list, keeping your teen safe might not have to cost as much as you may think. Although new cars typically offer the latest and most safety features, a recent compilation lists some of the safest used cars available. Keeping the price range less than $10,000, Consumer Reports looked at cars made within the last 10 years, comparing safety features and designs known to help keep passengers and drivers safe. Features like electronic stability control (ESC), one of the most effective safety features, became standard in all vehicles in 2012, and has been proven to prevent and mitigate serious and fatal accidents. ESC assists the driver in loss-of-control situations by automatically braking individual wheels to maintain vehicle control in potential rollover crashes or misjudging of a curve. The safest cars will also include antilock brakes, traction control and side and curtain airbags, all likely included in vehicles with ESC. Chevrolet Malibu models from 2009 to 2012, 2009 to 2011 Ford Focus cars, Toyota Rav4 models from 2004 to 2012 and Volkswagen Jetta models between 2009 and 2010 are some of the safest and most affordable vehicles for teens,
