Forget the Stamp with AutoPay With Auto Pay, you can avoid late payments and a lapse in your AAA membership. You’ll still receive a paper bill, and you can update your membership prior to making a payment. The credit or debit card you leave on file will be charged the amount of the bill. Any payments from your card will be debited 10 to 15 days before your renewal date. Simply logon to your account at AAA.com and select “Enroll” under Billing Information, or call the Member Service phone number on the back of your membership card to sign up.

Consumer Reports Touts AAA Discounts The December 2015 issue of Consumer Reports highlights the value of AAA discounts offerings as a primary reason for becoming a member. “If you travel frequently, AAA’s discount program alone could be worth the cost of membership,” the publication’s Car Strategist column reads. “Even if you find a provider or program better for your needs, you may want to consider keeping your AAA membership just for the discounts, with its roadside assistance as a backup.” “We are pleased to be complimented by a well-respected magazine, which lends further credibility to AAA Discounts & Rewards,” said Jim Lehman, AAA East Central president.

Free Junior Associates — Priceless Protection for Teens AAA members can extend their AAA coverage for dependents age 16 to 18, with a free Junior Associate membership. They’ll carry their very own AAA card, and are entitled to AAA benefits and services including 24/7 roadside assistance, exclusive savings at AAA Discounts & Rewards, AAA Mobile solutions and more. Members can add Junior Associates by calling or visiting your local AAA office or, by clicking on aaa. com/JuniorAssociate. (All Associate Members must reside at the Primary Member’s address, and proof of age may be required).

A great member experience across every platform New and enhanced services expand AAA’s digital footprint

I

n an era when every new piece of technology promises a magical new future, AAA has opted for a more practical approach. Virtual and mobile platforms aren’t just the flavor of the month, but a means to extend AAA products and services to a mobile and tech-savvy audience. “Integration with the newest platforms enables AAA to deliver a great member experience with timely, accurate information across the entire consumer technology space,” notes Jim Lehman, president AAA East Central, “whether a member uses a desktop or notebook computer, a smartphone, a tablet or wearable technology.” AAA’s new Apple Watch functionality puts consumers in charge of their time and helps them make decisions on how much they spend on fuel. Apple Watch owners can also find the fastest route to nearby stations. AAA Gas Price functionality for Apple Watch searches gas station pricing within a multi-mile radius of the user. It then shows the options the user selected — fastest or cheapest. The fastest gas station is determined by reviewing detailed turn-by-turn directions of the eight closest stations and layering traffic information to compute drive times. Navigation to the stations is routed through Apple Maps. Users can also configure the app to select the price for the type of fuel they use. Be sure to program the watch before driving, then follow Apple Watch’s turn-

by-turn voice commands or designate a passenger to help navigate to a destination. Pricing is updated seven times per day to ensure consumers have access to the most current information. The AAA Mobile app is designed to look and work great on your IOS or Android device. Use it to access roadside assistance, interactive maps, turn-byturn directions and more all from one integrated app. AAA’s new Service Tracker function takes the worry out of waiting for assistance. You’ll know exactly when help will arrive and you can watch in real time as the responding service vehicle

Membership for Them...

Peace of Mind for You. You always want the best for them. So give them the benefits of AAA membership. With roadside assistance, vacation planning, maps, travel guides, exclusive savings, and much more, they can rely on AAA almost as much as they rely on you. To add an associate to your membership, or to buy a gift membership, call or visit your local AAA office, or AAA.com.

makes its way to you. For more information or to download the AAA Mobile app, visit the AAA Mobile Solutions page at AAA.com/Mobile. AAA’s TripTik Planner at AAA.com provides unprecedented access to AAA travel resources in multiple formats and across all devices. Users will notice a new look in the system’s tab and tool selections. The changes are designed to streamline access to core features and present a more fluid and responsive layout for all desktop and mobile screen sizes. Along with TripTik maps, directions and Drive Trips, AAA’s all-in-one

platform for trip-planning resources, will also become a portal for location-based content when a user maps, or explores a destination. Members can easily access AAA Road Service Online, from their PC or tablet device by clicking on the Road Service Online link at AAA.com. You’ll be guided through the online request process, and requests made online go directly to the dispatcher, so the time it takes to request service online can be considerably shorter than by phone. This is particularly true during severe weather when call volume can be heavy. Visit AAA.com the next time you need roadside assistance. While technology offers a seemingly endless capacity to enhance our motoring and travel lives, AAA reminds motorists that safety is always the number one priority. No application or device should be used in a manner that will distract drivers from their primary responsibility of driving safely and without distractions.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

AAA.com is now more informative, more reader-friendly, and more in-synch with the busy lives of AAA members. It’s an indispensible online companion and a perfect complement to the brick-andmortar AAA locations that you know and trust.

AAA Member Rewards Visa® now with microchip technology Make your travels safe and secure with AAA

A

AA members enjoy added convenience and security when traveling abroad when they use a AAA “chip” credit card and take advantage of AAA’s foreign currency program. While abroad, many travelers encounter merchants that won’t accept their traditional credit or debit cards. That’s because in the United States, credit card transactions are processed primarily by card readers that read the magnetic stripe on the back of the credit card. In Europe and many other countries, credit card transactions are processed primarily by card readers that read an embedded microchip on the card. The chip makes transactions more secure and as a result this technology has been widely adopted. The good news for AAA members is that AAA credit cards are available with chip technology. If you already have a AAA credit card you can call the number of the back of your card to request a chip card. If you’re not

a AAA cardholder, visit your local branch office or aaa.com/creditcard to learn about the many benefits of carrying a AAA credit card. Here are a few key things you need to know about chip cards before you travel: Chip cards come in two types: ‘Chip & PIN’ and ‘Chip & Signature.’ With Chip & PIN, the cardholder enters a 4-digit PIN to complete each transaction. With Chip & Signature, the cardholder simply signs for the transaction. AAA credit cards with chip technology are Chip & Signature cards. Most of Europe and a number of other countries prefer Chip & PIN technology, while most issuers in the US are offering Chip & Signature technology. Therefore, when traveling abroad with a chip card issued by a bank in the United States, including your AAA credit card, you may need to let the merchant know that you’ll be signing for your transaction rather than entering a PIN.

In addition, be sure to carry some cash in the local currency since US-issued chip cards cannot be used in unattended terminals and kiosks in countries that issue Chip & PIN cards. That way you’ll be ready to grab a quick bite to eat or pay for ground transportation upon arrival. By purchasing foreign currency before you leave you also save on service fees. Many AAA offices provide foreign currency services, including buying back your leftover currency after the trip. So relax, have a great trip, and enjoy the added security and peace of mind that comes with your AAA membership.

Safe, convenient & rewarding With the AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card, you are never alone. There is someone to assist you with any matter regarding your account 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For information about the card or to apply, call 866-665-3581 or visit AAA.com/creditcard.

Keeping the roof over your head Proper maintenance can help you avoid expensive repairs By Robin Jones hen a big storm blows into town, are you holding your breath, wondering if your roof will leak? While rain falls outside, do you kick yourself for not having hired that contractor to inspect your roof? If so, you’re not alone. Too many homeowners discover that their roof needs repairs only after it starts to leak. Then, if the leak causes serious water damage, there’s a chance their insurance may not cover repairs. The best way to avoid expensive repairs resulting from a leaky roof is to perform regular preventive maintenance and replace your roof when damage or age dictates it’s time. Here are a few maintenance tips, along with some guidelines for choosing a contractor: Check your roof for signs of wear annually. From the ground, take a detailed look at your roof with a pair of binoculars. Are any shingles torn, loose, or missing? If so, you may need to hire someone to secure or replace them. Is there any sign of other damage? Often the first place a roof shows its age is in the shingles that cap the roof peaks. Replacing these will cost far less than a whole new roof and can give your roof up to five more years of life. Inspect the gutters. Clear out debris that’s stuck in the gutter system. Leaves, twigs, and other waste can stop water

W

UP ON THE ROOF — Homeowners often discover a roof problem only after a leak. from draining properly, which can lead to water damage to your roof, walls, and ceiling. What’s more, heavy mounds of debris can cause gutters to sag and even fall down. Trim tree limbs so that the leaves and branches can’t fall on your roof and cause damage. Look for other signs your roof might need replacing. If you can clearly see a leak stain on the ceiling inside your home, if shingle granules start to show up in your roof gutters or fall onto the

driveway, or if it looks as if your roof is sagging or dipping, you probably have a problem. Call a contractor and schedule a roof inspection as soon as possible to ward off further damage. Replace it on time. Most roofing types are designed to last an average of 15 years, but certain types can last as long as 25 years. Also, roof warranties can vary widely depending on the materials used. Maintain records detailing when your roof was installed and

what the warranty protects so you’ll know when it’s time to replace it. Putting on a new roof increases your home’s value, and you might also get a discount on your insurance. Check their credentials. Before you sign a contract or hand over any money, ask your roofer for proof that he or she is licensed and carries general liability and worker’s comp insurance. Then ask for referrals, and check them. You want to hire someone with a solid reputation and many years of experience in the trade. Get it in writing. A good contractor will provide you with a written estimate on the cost of the roof repair and how long it will take. If your roofer can’t (or won’t) give you a contract, or if he asks you for more than half of the price upfront, you’re probably better off finding someone else.

Distractions linger long after hands-free tasks end New technologies can pose hidden dangers for drivers

P

otentially unsafe mental distractions can persist for as long as 27 seconds after dialing, changing music or sending a text using voice commands, according to surprising new research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. These lingering distractions are referred to as “residual costs” and the results raise new and unexpected concerns regarding the use of phones and vehicle information systems while driving. “These residual costs are notable,” says David Strayer, the University of Utah psychology professor who led the study. “At 25 mph, a vehicle would travel up to 988 feet — the approximate length of three football fields — before the residual costs completely dissipate. These findings have implications for people who think it’s safe to dial or send a text message at a stoplight, because the distractions from these interactions are likely to persist after the light turns green.” In prior research, Strayer’s team established a five-point scale to assess distraction levels resulting from activities such as listening to the radio (Category 1); sending voice-activated texts from an error-free system (Category 3), a set of complicated math-memory problems was used to establish the top end of the scale (Category 5). The latest study, completed in

MEASURING THE RISK — Researchers introduce participants to devices designed to gauge mental distraction. October, analyzed distraction levels caused by using voice-controlled information systems available in 10 vehicles and three smartphones. Sensors and video recorded the participants’ reaction times to potential hazards as they used hands-free systems to place calls, change radio stations and use the smartphones’ voice-texting features while driving in a residential neighborhood. The systems that performed best generally had fewer errors, required less

prior research, AAA considers distractions at Category 2 or higher to be unsafe, and none of these systems met this threshold. The researchers also determined that in-vehicle systems placed greater mental demands on older drivers than on younger drivers. Even after familiarizing themselves with their vehicles’ information systems, participants showed only marginal improvement in driving performance, leading researchers to conclude that such distractions “cannot be practiced away.” “The lasting effects of mental distraction pose a hidden and pervasive danger that would likely come as a surprise to most drivers,” said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “The results indicate that motorists could miss stop signs, pedestrians and other vehicles while the mind is readjusting to the task of driving.”

time on task and were relatively easy to use. Among the vehicles, the Chevy Equinox had the lowest, or best, distraction rating (2.4), while the Mazda 6 (4.6) had the highest, or worst, rating. Of the smartphone systems, Google Now performed best (3.0), followed by Apple Siri (3.4) and Microsoft Cortana (3.8), and using the latter three systems to send text messages significantly increased distraction levels. Replace any wiper blades that are “chattering,” or leave streaks or miss spots. Consider installing winter wiper blades or “beam” blades in areas of heavy snow. Winter wiper blades wrap the blade in a rubber boot that prevents ice and snow buildup that can inhibit contact between the blade and glass. Beam blades’ frameless design conforms to the shape of your windshield and the design helps resist snow and ice buildup for improved allweather performance. Keep your windshield washer fluid reservoir filled with a winter cleaning solution. All-season tires will work well in light to moderate snow conditions, providing they have adequate tread depth. In areas with heavy winter weather, using winter tires on all four wheels offers the best winter traction. If any tire has less than 3/32-inches of tread, it should be replaced.

POWER SHORTAGE — Battery problems are the number one reason for AAA Roadside Assistance calls during winter months. As the temperature starts to drop, so will the pressures in your tires—typically 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The proper tire pressure levels can be found in your owner’s manual, or on a sticker located on the driver’s side doorjamb. And don’t forget to check the spare.

Coolant leaks are more common when temperatures plunge because metal engine parts contract during cold weather, and hose clamps aren’t as tight and they should be. While your coolant never loses its antifreeze capability, the additives that lubricate the water pump and protect internal engine com-

ponents from rust, scale and corrosion become depleted over time. Motorists should have the cooling system flushed and filled when recommended by the manufacturer. Some newer coolant formulations can last for up to 5 years or 150,000 miles. A strong, healthy battery is an absolute necessity in winter. Your vehicle’s battery loses approximately 35 percent of its efficiency when the temperature dips below freezing and it goes down, down, down from there. First take a look at the connections and cables to make sure they’re tight and corrosionfree. If you suspect your battery is failing a qualified technician like those from AAA’s Mobile Battery Service can determine the condition of the battery. AAA Mobile Battery Service offers fast, accurate and convenient mobile battery testing and replacement. If a new battery is needed, you can have one installed right on the spot. AAA Battery Service vehicles carry batteries compatible with 90 percent of all cars, SUVs and light trucks on the road. FOR MORE INFORMATION

A regal tour of Portugal’s crowning glory Castles and fortresses breathe life into history

W

hat is the difference between a castle and a fort? In Portugal the answer is simple: a cannon. Castles make for good neighbors and Portugal and Spain often had “issues”. As a result there are dozens of castles and ancient walls wrapping towns and villages across the country. The historic city of Tomar is located 85 miles northeast of Lisbon. Rosescented streets attest to its remarkable gardens, bordered by geometric swaths of whitewashed houses. In the middle ages, the city was home of the Templar Knights, and brooding Templar Castle. During the 15th century Portuguese mariners sailed their caravels deep into uncharted waters to find the trade routes to Asia and South America. Henry the Navigator, one of the Order’s most famous grand masters, planned these epic adventures, known as the Discoveries, from this hilltop lair. Twelve miles south of Tomar medieval Almourol Castle rises up over a granite promontory on an islet in the Tagus River. Constructed by Gualdim Pais, the mystical Master of the Order of the Knights Templar in 1171, the crenellated towers and walls remain perfectly preserved. The Portuguese were master castle builders, but the need for walls changed dramatically in 1453. That year the Turks used a new invention, the can-

ON THE ROCKS — The name Almoural is derived from the Arabic word for “high rock.” non, to blast through the “impregnable” walls of Constantinople. It was a game changer — and Portugal needed a new type of castle designed to stop cannons and warships. These fortresses were very different than the castles of old — the walls were low, and backed by earthworks. Walls

were sloped, so cannon balls simply bounced off of them. The forts were often star shaped — so defenders could create deadly cross fire. Not far from the Spanish border the fortress of Almeida stands watch over Portugal’s mountainous east. Completed in 1641, from the air it

resembles a 12-pointed star and the perimeter still includes a moat and massive gates. Today, the village remains almost entirely within the walls, which are intact, well-preserved and easy to explore and admire. Home to some of the best-preserved city walls in Europe, Elvas once guarded the road to Lisbon. The town is dominated by a remarkable, 13th century Moorish castle and visitors will find churches, military barracks and miles of walls to walk and explore. The main plaza is filled with shops and tascas — simple, inexpensive Portuguese restaurants. One local favorite is bacalhau dourada, salted cod with fried egg, mixed with very thin fries. Valença protected Portugal’s northern most borders. The massive fortress still looms over the Minho River with Spain just a cannon shot away. A masterpiece of 17th century military architecture, between the interconnected forts is the historic town with pretty squares, medieval lanes and lots of shops, cafes and inns. Inside the fortress is a Roman milestone that dates back to the 1st century AD.

Study your options for travel insurance What student travelers and parents need to know

A

new year means a new semester for the college student in your life. Chances are, at some point, your son, daughter or relative may have the option of traveling and studying abroad. Whether they’re planning to visit for a week over spring break or are diving into the culture and lifestyle of a new country for a semester or more, international travel offers an immersive and unique opportunity for students. But, the same opportunity can leave with an anxiety-inducing prospect. Before the process becomes too overwhelming, there are some steps you can take to ensure everyone’s peace of mind. For spring breakers headed abroad, making sure all the essentials are covered is integral. A short trip overseas requires at least a passport. Longer stays, depending on the country may also require a visa. Be sure to allow enough time—roughly four to six weeks—for the application to be processed. As part of the passport application, several other documents are needed to fulfill the request. A copy of their birth certificate, a photocopy of a valid driver’s license and two passport photos, along with the application form and fee must be submitted for processing. Many local AAA branches offer a passport photo service available

TRAVELS WITH YOU — Your medical insurance may not cover you outside the country. for members. Passport renewals may be sent by mail, but applications must be made in person for first-time applicants and those younger than 16. Keep up with the news, and follow travel alerts and statements through the U.S. Department of State. Signing up for the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) keeps you

informed through alerts and messages to travelers and their loved ones about travel concerns in other countries. U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad are able to register their trips with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, for free, as well. Remember to make insurance arrangements, as well. Not all health insurance policies cover medical care

abroad, and those that do often have stipulations regarding the types of issues covered and rarely cover medical evacuations. Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance covers the unexpected for you and your loved ones while overseas. With a travel insurance policy, your travel investment is protected if the trip needs to be cancelled due to illness or injury, flight delays or bad weather. You’re even protected while away. Travel insurance goes beyond borders, where your domestic medical insurance or Medicare may not cover. Depending on your destination, the cost of health care, hospitalization and emergency medical evacuation can be prohibitive. Allianz Global Assistance offers several different packages to meet your vacation needs. A AAA travel agent can assist you in choosing the right package, no matter where you have made your travel arrangements.

Wilderness, wildlife, wonder and more The National Park Service turns 100 this year

T

he National Park Service turns 100 this year, and everyone can take part in the celebration. The Centennial is more than a birthday. It will kick off a second century of stewardship by engaging communities through recreation, conservation, and historic preservation programs. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation to create the National Park Service, which preserves and protects 408 sites throughout the country. Each one, whether it’s a national park, a monument, historic site or a national seashore, was established to protect, preserve and share its national significance for future generations. Some, like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite conserve magnificent landscapes and natural wonders. Others, like the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania commemorate people and events. Chicago’s newly designated Pullman Historic District, marks the birthplace of the first AfricanAmerican labor union. Parks like Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley National Park offer easy access to major cities, while others are extremely remote. Kobuk Valley, located high in the Arctic Circle, is accessible only by dogsled, snowmobile, or on foot. The largest — Alaska’s Wrangel-St. Elias National Park and Preserve — unravels over 13 million acres and is

MAGIC MOUNTAINS — Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Jeff Dunn photo. larger than nine states. At just 0.02 acres Philadelphia’s Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial is the smallest, honoring the Polish American hero of the Revolutionary War. America’s national parks are home to Denali, the highest point in North America at 20,322 feet, and Death Valley, the lowest (also the hottest and driest) at 282-feet below sea level.

There are 35 parks named after presidents, and one that celebrates four of them. Mount Rushmore National Memorial, established in 1925, features 60-foot tall sculptures of Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln, but somehow ended up being named after Charles Rushmore, a New York attorney. The Roosevelt Campobello International Park is actu-

ally located in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Some of the oldest trees on earth live on the craggy mountain slopes of Nevada’s Great Basin National Park. The rare Great Basin bristlecone pine can survive for 4,000 years or more under extremely harsh conditions. Mammoth Cave National Park is the world’s longest cave system, with more than 365 miles explored. Located in the Green River valley in south central Kentucky, cave tours have been offered since 1816, making Mammoth Cave one of North America’s oldest tourist attractions. A national park can be many different things to many different people and the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation encourage you to connect with and celebrate our national parks this year with their Find Your Park campaign. Whether you’re a regular visitor, or a virtual explorer, take time to experience, explore, learn, be inspired, or just relax in America’s national parks, which will continue to amaze and delight visitors for the next 100 years.

Just 21 miles long and 14 miles wide, most of the pear-shaped island is encircled by coral reefs teeming with marine life. Bridgetown, the capital was once known as “the London of the West Indies.” Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, in the 18th and 19th centuries the British Colonial Garrison was the largest in the colonies. Often the first landfall for ships making the Atlantic crossing it remains a popular port. Cruise lines calling in here include Carnival, Oceania, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. The island offers over 70 miles of beaches, ranging from mild to wild. The west coast stretching from Bridgetown to Holetown, is known as the “Platinum Coast” because of its powdery white beaches framed by upscale resorts like Sandy Lane, where golfer Tiger Woods was married. Crane Beach, on the quieter south coast, is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world. With its alluring backdrop of cliffs and smiling crescent of pink sand, it’s perfect for a romantic getaway. The East Coast Road overlooking

Nearby Andromeda Botanic Gardens cascades down a verdant hillside strewn with enormous coral rock formations.

In 1536 Portuguese explorer Pedro Campos called the island Los Barbados “the bearded ones” after seeing the long hanging aerial roots of island’s bearded fig trees.

While the atmosphere in town and on the beaches is generally laid back, Barbados does maintain a certain sense of decorum. Topless sunbathing is illegal and so is wearing camouflage clothing. Remnants of the old sugar plantations and mills still dot the lush green hills of the interior. Top 5 ways your car has changed in past 10 years Automotive landscape has undergone a decade of transition

T

en short years ago, smartphones were rare, no one ever heard of ride sharing, and automakers were touting the number of cupholders in the cabin. Today, they are racing to offer wireless communications embedded into the vehicle; eye-popping fuel economy and technologies aimed at helping drivers avoid collisions. The past decade has been revolutionary for many sectors of society, but few have seen as much change as the auto industry. “Cars have become more like brains on wheels,” said Sheryl Connelly, Ford’s global trends manager. “Consumers want the drive to be an experience, especially since the amount of time Americans spend in the car has nearly doubled in the last 10 years.” This trend has exploded in the past decade, redefining the way we use our vehicles. As the calendar flips into 2016, here are our Top 5 ways your vehicle has changed since 2006: Accident avoidance — Automotive safety has advanced dramatically in the area of accident avoidance. The systems include lane departure and blind spot warnings, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, active headlights, telematics control systems and parking guidance. Surveys show that more than 6 in 10 consumers are interested in these systems next time they buy a car.

HOME ON WHEELS — Americans now spend twice as much time in cars. Fuel economy — Cars and the engines that power them are shrinking and have become more fuel-efficient. According to the EPA, the average vehicle CO2 emissions reduction rate and fuel economy achieved record levels in model year 2013, and have improved in 8 of the last 9 years. Four-cylinder engines with turbochargers, once exclusively reserved for exotic sports cars, have become a popular way to achieve higher mileage without giving up performance.

Removing the guesswork — Today’s vehicles are equipped with maintenance reminders, and active controls that actually manage vehicle systems including self-parallel parking, and rain-sensing wipers. Warning systems use radar sensors and cameras to detect objects while active controls can engage automatic braking in certain situations. Reliability — Not that long ago vehicle life expectancy was around 100,000 miles. Now vehicles are routinely driven

200,000 or even 300,000 miles without major mechanical problems. More creature comforts — Consumers today enjoy a much more comfortable ride. Improved interior materials and touch points, sleek interior designs, heated and cooled seats, and more storage offer drivers more comfort and convenience. Other features include ambient lighting, keyless remotes, voice-activated controls, and real-time traffic alerts. The next decade will bring more revolutionary change for both the auto industry and American consumers. Look for semi-autonomous vehicles, vehicles that can communicate with pedestrians or cyclists who carry a smartphone or a special transponder, more connectivity such as vehicle-to-vehicle systems that will allow vehicles to “talk” to each other via the cloud using “swarm” intelligence.

Car crashes pose the single greatest risk to teens Parental involvement key to keeping teen drivers safe

T

he biggest threat to teens’ safety is sitting in right in your driveway, but many parents fail to appreciate the risk. A recent National Safety Council survey found 76 percent of parents are unaware that car crashes are the biggest threat to their teens’ safety. Three quarters of parents said they believe drugs and alcohol, bullying or the Internet are teens’ most significant safety threats. “Too many parents fail to appreciate that the first year of driving is a particularly dangerous time in a teen’s life,” says Auto Club Driving Schools’ Jeff Gardner. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) on average eight teens lose their lives every day in vehicle crashes, or approximately 3,000 teens per year. Parents may be unaware of the scope of the problem, but many understand why teens crash. Seventy-two percent of parents correctly pointed to lack of experience or poor decision making as leading crash factors. However, far fewer parents said they enforce rules that help reduce crash risks, and 44 percent said they do not supervise their teens’ driving for the recommended amount of time during the restricted licensing stage. Five key issues for teen drivers include: Impaired driving — In 2011, nearly

RISKY BUSINESS — The first year of driving is a dangerous time for teens. 1 million high school teens drove after drinking despite the fact that all were legally too young to drink. Driving at night — Teens’ fatal crash risk is nearly twice as high at night, yet the survey found 45 percent of parents allow their teens to drive until 10 p.m. or later. Driving with young passengers — A single young passenger can increase a teen driver’s fatal crash risk 44 percent, but 60 percent of parents surveyed allow teens to drive younger siblings,

and 43 percent allow teens to drive with friends. Driving Practice — Forty four percent of parents do not spend more than the recommended hours supervising their teens’ driving. Experts say they should look for opportunities to continue to drive together during the first year of licensure.
