Travel Insurance is “peace of mind” insurance So you never have to worry about the “what ifs”

I

nternational travel has become so seamless and accessible that it’s often easy to forget you’re in a foreign country — until you’re faced with an emergency. Experienced travelers know how frustrating it can be to solve a problem in a country, particularly when you don’t speak the language. With travel insurance from Allianz Global Assistance you’ll always have someone on your side. Last year they helped over 13 million people plan for the unpredictable with financial protection and 24/7 support from multilingual representatives around the world. With features like comprehensive trip cancellation and primary emergency medical coverage, and 24 hour travel assistance, the TripAssist Family Care Plan is a trusted traveling companion. And there’s no charge for kids 17 and under when traveling with parents or grandparents. This makes premiums more affordable for families. Lost or damaged bags are now the second most common complaint to the Department of Transportation. Should your luggage fail to arrive when you do, baggage loss and damage coverage is $1,000 — double that of comparable packages. Baggage delay coverage was recently increased to $300, a 50 percent improvement over previous plans. TripAssist Family Care also protects your travel investment should your trip be delayed or cancelled for a covered

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY — Travel insurance can provide valuable assistance and financial protection. reason, such as a major injury, jury duty or other unforeseen circumstances. Recent additions to this plan include reimbursement of Frequent Flyer miles and associated airline fees, and $750 in vehicle return coverage if your road trip is interrupted. Medical treatment on your domestic or overseas vacation may leave you with staggering out-of-pocket expenses. Many health plans do not cover you in a foreign country, and in most cases neither does Medicare. TripAssist

Family Care includes $25,000 in primary medical coverage for emergency medical and dental costs. Emergency medical evacuation can be a lifesaver when traveling to a destination where health care is not up to U.S. standards. TripAssist Family Care will reimburse you for transportation costs to the medical facility and back home, up to $500,000. An array of optional benefits helps you tailor a plan to your own specific needs. TripAssist Family Care Trip+

is ideal for families traveling abroad. It doubles many of the Family Care Plan’s post departure benefits, including missed connection coverage, travel delay, emergency medical coverage and transportation, and baggage loss/damage or delay. For just a few dollars a day Rental Car Damage Protector provides primary coverage for covered collision, loss and damage, along with 24 hour emergency assistance and you won’t have to worry about using your personal car insurance company. The Required to Work option gives you the flexibility to cancel for covered work related reasons like a business/ company merger or because your boss tells you to return to work. The Cancel Anytime option offers greater flexibility than a traditional trip cancellation policy because it allows you to cancel your trip for almost any reason that the Family Care Plan does not already cover and receive 80% of a nonrefundable trip costing up to $10,000 per person back in cash. Several factors can affect the cost of any travel insurance policy. Before deciding on a plan, be sure you understand what you’re buying and what each policy does and does not cover. For more information, or to compare benefits and plans visit AAA.com/travelinsurance.

By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central ometimes the best things in life really are free. If you have a teen that’s reached driving age, there’s no reason for them to go it alone on the road. AAA members can extend AAA protection to dependents age 16 to 18, with a Junior Associate membership. And it won’t cost you a dime. Giving your teen a AAA card, entitles them to a wealth of benefits and services, including 24/7 roadside assistance, exclusive savings at AAA Discounts & Rewards, AAA mobile and GPS solutions and more. Why is it important for everyone in your family to have their own AAA card? AAA membership is personal, it covers the individual, not the vehicle. What it means is you’re covered in any car you drive — even as a passenger in a non-member’s car. Plus, all AAA members — Primary or Associate, or Junior Associate — have total access to the complete catalog of AAA services except the club publication. AAA Junior Associate memberships may be free, but they deliver a tremendous amount of value. It’s a passport to no-cost travel services like online TripTik® routings, maps, TourBooks and eTourBook guides. Download the AAA Mobile app and it stays with you, when you’re on the go. Available for Apple

Richard Hamilton and Android devices, members can instantly access roadside assistance, gas prices, driving directions, and more, all from one integrated app. Junior Associates can use their AAA cards to obtain exclusive savings at thousands of “Discounts & Rewards” partners on AAA.com. This innovative shopping experience features deep discounts, limited-time offers and everyday savings on electronics, apparel, attractions, movie tickets and more at thousands of retailers, like Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Best Buy. Your AAA membership card also means finding trusted automotive

advice at AAA.com, and service at AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities that meet our strict standards of excellence. Free Junior Associate memberships are available for dependent children age 16, 17, or 18, residing at the Primary member’s household, and proof of age is required. If no one in your home meets those criteria, don’t worry. Primary members can still add their spouse, or one adult age 18 and older, and dependent children age 19 through 22, as regular Associate members, if they reside at the Primary member’s address. While not free, costs are surprisingly modest. AAA Associate protection is available for just $25.00 per member, per year. New Associate membership fees are also pro-rated to your expiry date for added savings and convenience. Members can add Associate members, or upgrade any existing AAA membership to a higher level like AAA Plus, or AAA Premier, at any time by calling or visiting their local AAA office, or calling our Member Service Center at 1.800.441.5008. You may also add new Associate members online at AAA.com. I think you’ll enjoy your own AAA membership even more, knowing you’ve extended the security, confidence, and peace of mind that comes from being a AAA member, to those you care for and want to protect. And that’s a feeling you just can’t put a price on.

ehicle breakdowns are an unfortunate fact-of-life and the timing is never good. You could call in by dialing our 1-800-222-4357 toll-free number, but AAA has several convenient ways to request road service — AAA Mobile, AAA Find Me, and AAA Road Service Online. Use them when you’re on the road, or from your home or office.

AAA Mobile AAA Mobile is beautifully responsive and optimized to look and work great on your IOS or Android device. Use it to access Roadside Assistance, and more, from a single cohesive app. Our new Service Tracker function takes the anxiety out of waiting for assistance. The app estimates the truck’s arrival time, letting you know when help will arrive. Watch in real time as the responding service vehicle makes its way to you. AAA Mobile also makes the perfect traveling companion for people on the go. In addition to roadside assistance key features include: • Convenient trip planning with interactive maps and turn-by-turn directions;

Exclusive member discounts at over 164,000 locations; • Mobile battery quotes and instant replacement; (where available) • Locate the AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities and AAA branches nearest you, no matter where you are; • Research and book AAA Diamond Rated hotels; • Find electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. AAA Mobile delivers a complete mobile member experience. For additional information, or to download the AAA Mobile app, visit the AAA Mobile Solutions page at AAA.com/ Mobile.

AAA Find Me No street signs? No mile markers? No problem! If you need roadside assistance AAA can rescue you — even if you aren’t sure where you are. AAA has teamed up with Sprint and AT&T to provide you with AAA Find Me, enabling AAA to automatically receive your geographic location when you call from a Sprint or AT&T GPS-enabled wireless phone. To take advantage of this free member service, all you need to do is reg-

ister your Sprint or AT&T handset at AAA.com/Mobile.

AAA Road Service Online Members can easily access AAA Road Service Online, from their PC or tablet device by clicking on the Road Service Online link at AAA. com. If you are not a registered AAA. com user, you’ll be asked to enter your member number and zip code to confirm your membership. You’ll quickly be guided through the online request process, providing the same information you would if you had called, including vehicle information, location, and type of service requested. Service requests made online go directly to the dispatcher, so the time it takes to request service online can be considerably shorter than by phone. And AAA accepts online requests for road service 24-hours a day so you can be confident your service request will be handled promptly and carefully. This is particularly true during severe weather conditions when call volume can be heavy. Visit AAA.com the next time you need roadside assistance.

Beware of Dog: When man’s best friend is not so friendly Dogs can take a big bite out of your homeowners insurance By Robin Jones arol Lewis had just arrived home with her kids when her postal worker came to deliver the mail. As Carol opened the door, the family dog, Max, a dachshund/beagle mix, raced out to greet everyone. “Max was jumping up to say hello to the postwoman, and as he came down, one of his teeth caught on her thigh,” says Phillip Lewis, Carol’s husband. “Carol walked over to see if the postwoman was okay, and when she looked at her leg, she realized it was bleeding.” The postal worker explained that she was required to report the incident. The Lewises thought they’d simply receive a letter warning them to keep Max locked up, but a few months later, the post office informed the couple they’d need to get a PO box if they wanted to continue to receive mail. Moreover, the postal worker eventually filed a lawsuit against the Lewises to recoup her medical bills. Their homeowners insurance covered those costs. But the insurer dropped the family’s coverage at renewal time, forcing the Lewises to buy home insurance elsewhere. After a difficult search, they finally found an insurer that would cover dog-bite incidents—but the policy was twice as expensive. Dog bites postal worker—it sounds like the start of a joke. But as the Lewis family found out, if your pet bites a visitor, you may face serious consequences. In fact, according to the Insurance

BAD DOGGY — Sneaking up on the sofa is one thing, but dog bites account for one-third of all homeowners liability claims. Information Institute, one-third of all homeowners liability claims paid out in 2012 were due to dog bites. The average cost per claim was $29,752. The Humane Society estimates that almost half of all U.S. households have at least one dog. If you fall into that category, here’s how to protect yourself and your family: Make sure you’re covered. Most carriers will insure homes with dogs, and a typical homeowners policy will cover dog-bite incidents through your liability coverage. This coverage can be used to

regarding pets. Many insurers have a “one-bite rule,” meaning that they’ll cover the first dog-bite incident, but you’re responsible for any additional bites. Others might charge a premium after an incident, or, as the Lewis family found out, they might choose to drop your coverage entirely. Some insurance companies will not cover dogs deemed “high risk,” such as pit bulls or rottweilers (or even dogs mixed with an excluded breed); check with your agent to make sure your dog’s breed is covered. Also, be aware that your pet could also cause injury by accidentally knocking someone down or causing a fall. If your dog bites someone, know what to do. First and foremost, provide medical attention for the injured person. Make sure you get that person’s name and phone number, and tell him or her to save all medical bills. Then call your insurance carrier to report the incident, and follow any instructions your agent gives you.

Nature knows no boundaries, Costa Rica A peaceful green oasis filled with natural attractions

C

osta Rica has an emerald-like radiance that seems to emanate from a place deep inside the earth. Dense lowlands give way to rolling savanna, steaming volcanoes and evenings filled with stars. Humpback whales breech on a secluded coast and solemn black frigate birds hang like kites in the wind. Roughly half the size of Ireland, this mountainous nation on the Central American isthmus is home to an astonishing bio-diversity. No fewer than twelve climatic zones shelter about five percent of the world’s known species of flora and fauna. There are at least 50 varieties of hummingbird and millions of butterflies, including the iridescent blue morphos with an 8-inch wingspan. Eco-tourism has surpassed coffee and banana exports as Costa Rica’s largest industry. That’s impressive when you consider that Americans consume upward of 28 pounds of bananas per person a year. San Jose, the capital, is located in the temperate central highlands a fertile region renowned for its coffee plantations. Sometimes referred to as the “Big Pineapple,” the city is built around the “Plaza de la Cultura,” a great starting point for exploring the capital and its attractions. Don’t be surprised if an iguana comes looking for a handout at your table in the cafes around Playa Tamarindo.

CHASING WATERFALLS — The Río Celeste Waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park. Surrounded by mountains and national parks a day on the beach often ends in an impromptu fiesta with a Ticostyle barbecue and liberal quantities of guaro, the local firewater. Straddling the Continental Divide, the Monteverde Cloud Forest feels like stepping into a vast green cathedral. The elfin woodlands have been whimis-

cally dwarfed by the winds and there are millions of bromeliads, epiphytes, and fauna of every possible shade of green. Every breeze seems redolent with orchids or the pungent musk of tree ferns. Visitors can take a zip line canopy tour, which floats silently above the trees and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch

a glimpse of a jaguar or the elusive Quetzal, famous for their iridescent, jewel-like plumage. The bird’s name is derived from quetzalli, an Aztec word meaning “precious” or “beautiful.” Just to the northwest, the Arenal Volcano rises above the rainforest reaching into the sky with near perfect symmetry. The youngest and most active of Costas Rica’s 14 volcanoes, puffs of steam rise from its caldera, although the last eruption was in 2010. The Río Celeste unravels through the rainforests of the Northern Lowlands region. One of Costa Rica’s most spectacular rivers, the water’s supernatural shade of blue is the result of sulphur from the Tenorio Volcano mixing with calcium carbonate. About 50 miles away is the remote Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. Perched along the Nicaraguan border, it’s one of the best places to view indigenous wildlife, like the rare harpy eagle. Mosscovered crocodiles lurk in the shallows, while the jungle’s soothing layers of green are interrupted by the flash of a scarlet macaw or a howler monkey’s elegiac roar.

Just because you don’t own a home in Florida is no reason you can’t be a “snowbird” and live the leisurely (and warm!) life-style of the Sunshine State for 28 nights (Saturdayto-Saturday weeks) in 2016. AAA Travel has just what you need: 4-week Saturday-to-Saturday rentals of a roomy furnished vacation home in peaceful Port Charlotte! One of Sail magazine’s 10 Greatest Places to Sail, the Charlotte Harbor area offers nature adventures like canoeing/kayaking on 53 trails, exploring 5 national wild-life refuges and discovering prime birding opportunities. There are more than 70 parks & preserves, 16 golf courses and numerous sporting events and recreational facilities. Cultural pursuits include visual arts, theater, dance and music (Port Charlotte is home to the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra). No wonder Money magazine called it Best Place to Retire. Or just settle in, take advantage of the screened-in swimming pool and laugh at winter back home! Get away from it all...or invite family and/or friends to share some Florida fun with you. These 3-bedroom/2-bathroom (some with 2.5) homes can comfortably sleep 6 (bedding/ linens provided). They feature fully equipped kitchens (dishwasher, stove/oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave) and dining areas for everyone to gather in...screened-in heated pools for swimming, lounging and loafing! Alaska in February? Crazy, right? Make that “crazy awesome”! In today’s lingo that translates into unique, unusual and you-need-to-experience-it-to-believe-it! It’s true: AAA’s Ultimate Alaska tour does depart on Feb 25, right in the middle of Old Man Winter’s reign. But that’s exactly what makes this trip special. This is when true Alaskans reclaim their stunning state from the hordes of tourists who descend upon it in summer. And it’s also the time of a wondrous natural phenomenon — the Aurora Borealis. Begin in Fairbanks in search of the beguiling Aurora Borealis. This natural light display in the sky can vary from barely visible to the naked eye to bright enough to read at night. Visit the Morris Thompson Cultural Center and see the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Ride the Alaska Railroad, whose cars feature picture windows and open-air vestibules. Keep an eye out for wildlife and views of Mt McKinley. Enjoy an entire day at leisure to explore Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city...or opt to flight-see through the Chugach Mountains...or try dog sledding with an Iditarod musher! Motorcoach via Seward Highway, one of America’s most beautiful highways, past Chugach State Park’s 3,000-foot-high mountains jutting up on your left. On the right, the sprawling flats of Turnagain Arm stretch like a plain to the opposite shores of Cook Inlet. Visit a Wildlife Conservation Center to see wildlife close up and a Sealife Center for an in-depth look above and below the water.

hether you are packing in preparation for a little leaf-peeping, or you are planning an off-season getaway, saving your car from the wear of a long road trip can help keep you focused on the changing colors or the hot tropical sun. The best part is renting a car does not have to break your vacation budget. There are several tips, tricks and exclusive AAA member discounts to ensure you receive the best deal available to you. To start, consider renting from a location other than the airport. Locations away from busy airport traffic often offer lower rates on rental vehicles due to fewer applicable taxes and fees. Many rental companies provide pick up and return services for no extra charge. For example, Hertz car rental offers the service within a 15-minute radius from the rental spot, providing your location is not an airport. In some cases, booking at an offairport location could save you about a couple of hundred dollars per week. Renting on the weekends can get you a better deal on rates, as well. When booking a rental, use a credit card instead of a debit card whenever possible. Companies will sometimes place a $200 surcharge on the card at the time of pickup. an Juan is a colorful mélange of beaches, history and Latin and Afro-Caribbean cultures. The crown jewel of Spain’s empire in the Americas, it was built to protect Spanish treasure ships. Today, it’s the busiest cruise hub in the Caribbean. Most passengers arrive in Old San Juan, a 7-square-block historic area that’s a century older than Jamestown and Plymouth Rock. The old walled city houses a remakable patrimony of over 400 carefully restored 16th- and 17thcentury Spanish Colonial buildings crowned by Fort San Felipe del Morro, a sixteenth-century citadel. The area was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1983. With its 60-foot-high walls and cannons facing out toward the sea El Morro overlooks the entrance to San Juan Bay. Construction began 1539, and continued on and off for the next 400-years. Castillo de San Cristóbal stands guard at the eastern gate, the land entrance to the Old City. Visitors can walk along the ramparts, peer through cannon enbrasures, or take in the panoramic views of the coast that extend all the way to the trendy beach resort of Condado. The streets of Old San Juan are lined with Spanish Colonial buildings painted in bright pastels and draped with wrought iron balconies. According to the findings of Princess Cruises’ 2015 Relaxation Report released last August, over half (54%) of Americans spend their vacation days dealing with personal obligations such doctor’s or dentist’s appointments rather than actually vacationing. And the mere thought of asking their boss for a few extra days off causes more stress than asking for a pay raise for nearly a quarter (22%) of American workers, according to the recent survey conducted by Wakefield Research for Princess Cruises. With our 24/7 always-on culture, stress triggers are on the rise with nearly one-third of people who get stressed at just the thought of relaxing, up from 28-percent in 2014. And 42-percent frequently feel guilty about relaxing, also up from 38-percent last year. More than a third of Americans (36%), find it more difficult to relax than to live within their budget! “In the six years that Princess Cruises has commissioned this survey, we’ve continued to see stress levels rise year after year,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president. “This is an

unsustainable trend that can have a genuinely adverse impact on our society as a whole.” Half of Americans find just planning — and taking — an actual vacation stresses them out, and over half (55%) say they return feeling the need for a vacation from their vacation. Research has shown that men who take vacations are one third less likely to suffer from heart disease, while women, who don’t take vacations are more than twice as likely to suffer from depression. Beyond the obvious health benefits of being rested and rejuvenated, people who take a relaxing vacation feel more connected with family, more productive and positive about their jobs. And putting in more time on the job won’t even help you get ahead. According to an Oxford Economics report, workers who left 11-15 days of vacation time on the table actually lowered their chances of getting a bonus or promotion. On the positive side however, Americans still believe they can achieve the dream of finding relaxation, with two-thirds (66%) agreeing that taking a cruise is the best way to experience life and relax all in one vacation.

peaceful fountains, and expansive views of San Juan Bay. Get an inside look at rum’s most recognizable brand at Casa Bacardí. The interactive tour covers the entire rummaking process from raw cane to molasses, to barrel and bottle. A tasting and mixology lesson teaches visitors how

to create their own mojitos, and Cuba libres. About an hour east of the city is La Laguna Grande, home to one of the world’s most mesmerizing bioluminescent bays. Millions of micro-organisms known as dinoflagellates sparkle with an eerie blue green glow when disturbed. Kayak excursions lead visitors through the narrow mangrove channels into the lagoon, and the sensation of paddling through a sea of stars. El Yunque National Forest is one of Puerto Rico’s most beautiful natural settings and the only subtropical rainforest in the United States Forest System. Visitors can hike the Caimitillo Trail to the Coca Waterfall, once believed to be the Fountain of Youth, or take in the views from the Yohaku observation tower. In the evenings, the tiny coqui frog — Puerto Rico’s national symbol — begins its nightly symphony as San Juan’s boisterous clubs and casinos pulsate with seductive rhythms of Salsa, the musical “sauce” that makes parties happen.

Need a good mechanic? A

s you prepare your vehicle for the cooler months ahead, the task of finding a good mechanic for routine work or an unexpected situation can be daunting.

Over the past 40 years, AAA has been doing the hard work for you through the Club’s Approved Auto Repair program (AAR). The participating shops must meet a high level of standards, and not just any auto body makes the cut. Hundreds of shops apply with fewer than half meeting the criteria for approval. Every year, each facility is inspected and visited quarterly to ensure AAA standards are being upheld. Beyond these inspections, customer feedback is assessed through satisfaction surveys to guarantee the best service for AAA members. These facilities provide a written estimate of costs, labor guarantees on mechanical repairs, member discounts on parts and labor and must pass regular insurance and financial background checks. AAA members receive a 24-month/24,000-mile parts and labor guarantee on mechanical repairs at AAR shops, can request a member discount on regularly priced parts and labor through the program and benefit from priority Roadside Assistance for tows to AAR facilities. After the tow to an AAR facility, you’ll receive a prompt vehicle evaluation within an hour of arrival and assistance in obtaining alternative transportation. If at any time a member is not satisfied with the work completed at an AAR facility, the facility has agreed to follow AAA’s resolution to correct the member’s concerns. There are some simple measures car owners can take to keep their vehicles running smoothly throughout the year. By maintaining a calendar of checkup reminders and appointments, including the items listed in the following pages, some costly repairs can be avoided. Periodic inspections of tires, brakes, cooling/heating systems and fluid levels are a must. Regular maintenance also increases fuel economy and will extend the life of your vehicle. For when your car requires more than simple maintenance, you can find plenty of reliable mechanics by choosing an AAR facility. A list of local AAR facilities can be found in this section. You can search for AAR shops around the country by logging onto AAA.com/AAR.

Ready

October is car care month for AAA, and it is also a good time to make sure your vehicle is prepared for the winter ahead. AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities often report drivers skip critical maintenance measures in vehicle care, which can become costly oversights in the long run. Many repairs or replacements are simple and can be done at home. Inside you will find tips and information on vehicle care and upkeep.

Set

Before performing any type of maintenance on your vehicle, first check the owner’s manual. Familiarize yourself with the manufacturer specifications for tire pressure, fluids and filters. Replace worn wiper blades and switch to a cold-weather washer fluid. Examine the exterior of the vehicle, and check to make sure all lights are working. Test heaters and defrosters, as well, before the start of winter.

Go!

After performing regular maintenance and doing at-home repairs, a seasonal checkup at a repair shop offers a more in-depth assessment of your vehicle. AAA Approved Auto Repair shops conduct 40-point vehicle inspections. See page 23 for for a special offer on a Car Care inspection package. For a list of AAR facilities in your area, check out the back page of this section, or log on to AAA.com/Repair.

Car Care

Batteries, brakes & bumpers As the temperatures decrease, so can the performance from car batteries—around 33 percent less below freezing! So, be sure to perform regular maintenance to keep your car’s battery at its best. • Clean any noticeable corrosion. Always wear protective glasses and rubber gloves, and read your manual for proper care. A mixture of baking soda and water as cleaner will usually eliminate any residue. • Make sure all cables are tight. Check the cables using a firm grasp while the engine is off. • Have your battery inspected by a professional. AAA Approved Auto Repair shops and Mobile Battery Service technicians can make sure your battery is in working order.

They are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle, the brakes, and having them inspected by a technician is never a bad idea. Modern brake pads only last about 18,000 to 24,000 miles. Before winter, do a brake check, especially if you’ve noticed any high pitched squealing, grinding noises, vibration in the steering wheel and/or longer stopping distances. Don’t forget to check the belts and hoses, as well. Check engine hoses for leaks or cracks, squeeze each and replace any that feel brittle or excessively spongy. Check coolant levels when the engine is cold. If the level is low, add a 50-50 mix of coolant and water to maintain the antifreeze capability.

1. Inflate

2. Rotate

Tire pressure can drop one PSI for every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature, which means checking the pressure in all four tires and the spare is particularly important in fall and winter. Check the pressure once about every two weeks, inflating the tires to the prescribed level that can be found in the owner’s manual or along the door jamb.

For bumpers and everything in between, making sure your car is clean on the inside and outside will help extend its life and value. Washing the car once every 10 days will help keep the paint looking shiny and remove the grime left over from driving on winter roads. Always use soaps specifically made for vehicles and perform a pre-rinse to remove any particles that might scratch the paint. Mix in some baking soda with the water to help dissolve leftover salt. Clean the wheels first, then move onto the body of the car. Rinse the undercarriage, and use straight line motions when washing and drying. Dry the car thoroughly using a microfiber towel.

3. Replace

Every 5,000 to 7,000 miles tires should be rotated to ensure maximum performance and life. Front tires tend to wear more along the edges as the car turns. Rear tires typically wear more evenly, as they follow the front tires. Also important to the life of your car’s tires are alignments and balancing. In conjunction with regular tire rotations, alignments and balancing will give you a safer ride and save you money over time.

Any time the tire tread dips below 3/32 inches, it’s time for a replacement. An easy way to check tread depth is by placing a penny with Lincoln’s head facing down between the treads. If Lincoln’s head is visible above any of the tread, the wheel is in need of a new tire. With winter weather ahead, it may also be a good time to install snow tires on all four wheels to increase traction and shorten braking distances on slick roads.

Winter weather not only can take a toll on the outside of your car, but also on the inside. Lower temperatures reduce fuel economy by up to 20 percent. • Park your car in warmer places during colder months. • Avoid long warmups. A gentle drive off after about 30 seconds is recommended. • Maintain tire pressure. • Minimize the use of seat warmers and defrosters.

Sometimes vehicles can be as unpredictable as the weather. With millions of recalls making the news and connected cars potentially exposing drivers to hackers, keeping up with all the changes can be a challenge. As connected cars become more prevalent, making sure your privacy and safety is protected is increasingly on the minds of carmakers and legislators. Bills to make sure drivers’ information and security safe from hackers has already been introduced to require manufacturers to meet standards of safety regarding information such as where motorists shop, travel, etc. Connected car owners should pay special attention to any recalls or updates from manufacturers, according to Joe Fosko, manager of automotive repair solutions for AAA East Central. Keeping your car current, just as you would with your computer and cell phone, is key to making sure your vehicle is at its safest. All updates and upgrades will be issued by the car’s manufacturer. For general recalls, the manufacturer will often initiate a recall and inform car owners of steps to repair and/or replace affected parts. To find a list of current automotive recalls, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration created SaferCar.gov for consumers to keep track of and report vehicle issues. Even with the utmost preparation, weather conditions and other unexpected events can render vehicles inoperable. Taking steps to prepare yourself and your vehicle for an emergency may save the lives of you and your passengers. Start by programming emergency phone numbers into your cell phone’s contact list and downloading emergency service apps. Anytime you hit the road, particularly in winter, also make sure to keep the gas tank at least half full. Enough fuel and the following essentials should help keep you safe. Keep these items easily accessible: Drinking water and snacks for pets and humans Cell phone charger First aid kit Blankets/extra warm clothing Some other items to pack are: Snow shovel Abrasive material (e.g. cat litter, sand, salt) Ice scraper with brush Jumper cables Paper towels Flashlight with extra batteries Basic toolkit Flares/triangles Windshield washer fluid For a complete winter car care checklist, visit Exchange.AAA.com/Automobiles and click on “Car Care Month.”

AAA’s Mobile Battery Service is charging ahead

W

hether it’s the first start up in the morning or having the reserve power to run the heater and other accessories, your battery is critical to winter driving safety. And cold weather affects batteries more than any other vehicle component. As fall temperatures cool, motor oil thickens and more power is needed to turn over your engine. Batteries also lose approximately 35 percent of their efficiency when the temperature dips below freezing and close to 60 percent when the temperature falls below zero. Extremes of heat and cold, parasitic drains from onboard electronics and lack of proper maintenance are the main reasons for poor performance and premature battery death. Slow cranking, corroded terminals, a bulging or cracked case are all signs that a battery has been subject to harsh conditions and getting weaker. But diagnosing batteries can be tricky and they sometimes fail without warning. If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested to ensure it can survive the coldest winter months and/ or replace it as a preventative measure. AAA Battery Service offers fast, accurate and convenient mobile battery testing and replacement. State-of-

the art diagnostic equipment will confirm whether your battery will hold a charge, or if the problem lies deeper in the electrical system. Best of all, the service is included with your AAA membership. If a new battery is needed, you can purchase one and have it installed right on the spot. AAA Battery Service vehicles carry batteries compatible with 90 percent of all cars, SUVs and light trucks on the road. And each AAA branded battery is covered by an unprecedented nationwide 72-month warranty, with a 36-month free replacement warranty. Teens need to know the rules before they hit the road “5 to Drive” campaign helps parents reach teen drivers

P

arents may not realize it, but driving or riding in a car with a teen driver is the number one threat to their teen’s safety. The fact is, about 3,000 teens lose their lives every year in car crashes. That’s eight teens a day too many. The main cause? Driver inexperience. Yet, a recent survey shows that only 25 percent of parents have had a serious talk with their kids about the key components of driving. Parents need to discuss the many dangers of driving, including alcohol, seat belts, texting, speeding, and extra passengers. AAA East Central and Auto Club Driving Schools Inc., are joining with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote the “5 to Drive” campaign during National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 18-24, 2015. The campaign aims to help parents begin a conversation with their teen drivers about the rules of the road. “Parents must be vigilant about setting limits, enforcing the rules, road strategy and safety,” said Auto Club Driving Schools’ Jeff Gardner. “The ‘5 to Drive’ campaign will give them the tools they need to keep their teen drivers safe.” The “5 to Drive” campaign addresses the five most dangerous and deadly behaviors for teen drivers. The idea is to give parents some clear and concise talking points to use when they share these

FIVE TO KEEP THEM ALIVE — Parents can help change the numbers on teen driving crashes by explaining the risks. “5 to Drive” rules with their teens: No Drinking and Driving — Almost one out of five (19 percent) of the young drivers (15 to 19 years old) involved in fatal crashes had been drinking, even though they were too young to legally buy or possess alcohol. Buckle Up. Every Trip. Every Time. Front Seat and Back — Sixty four percent of all the young (13- to 19-year-old)

passengers of teen (15- to 19-year-old) drivers who died in motor vehicle crashes in 2013 weren’t restrained. Put Down the Device — The age group of 15 to 19 years old has the highest percentage of drivers who were distracted by cell phone use and involved in a fatal crash. In 2013, 156 people were killed in crashes that involved a distracted teen driver.

Stop Speeding Before It Stops You — In 2013, almost one-third (29 percent) of teen drivers involved in a fatal crash were speeding. No More Than One Passenger at a Time — The risk of a fatal crash goes up with each additional passenger. Teen drivers need to follow these rules and any other restrictions outlined in Kentucky’s graduated driver licensing (GDL) law. Parents need to outline rules and explain to their teens the deadly consequences of unsafe driving practices. The “5 to Drive” campaign can help parents start that conversation. “We are hoping that Teen Driver Safety Week and the ‘5 to Drive’ campaign will get the word out to all parents of teens,” Jeff Gardner said. “Don’t stop protecting them now that they can drive. They need you now more than ever.”

Battery Service A battery boost will be provided in an attempt to start the vehicle. If the vehicle cannot be started in this manner, towing provisions will apply. In most service territories, AAA can also quickly test your battery and electrical system. If needed, AAA can replace the battery on the spot with a AAA branded battery (at a special discounted member price.) The AAA battery includes a 3-year full replacement warranty. Fuel Delivery Service An emergency supply of fuel will be delivered to a member’s disabled vehicle enabling the member to reach the nearest service station. The member will be charged for the fuel at current pump prices. Specific quantities, brand, or octane ratings cannot be promised, nor can availability. AAA Plus: Provides sufficient free emergency fuel to enable you to reach the nearest service station, when your vehicle has run out of fuel. Towing Services When your vehicle cannot be safely driven after attempting any of the listed emergency services, your vehicle will be towed (once per breakdown) to the facility rendering the service, or up to three miles in any direction to a repair facility from the point of disablement at no charge. Charges for service that exceeds the benefits listed will be at the prevailing hourly or mileage rate for the region where service is provided. In instances when your vehicle becomes disabled

while towing a light-duty trailer, service will be provided for the trailer. You will be required to pay for trailer towing. All vehicles must be free of snow and ice prior to towing. AAA Plus: Provides up to 100 miles of free towing, in any direction from the point of disablement, to a repair facility of your choice. AAA Premier: Increases one tow to a maximum 200 miles plus a free one-day rental car. Extrication/Winching Your vehicle will be pulled out of a ditch by being extricated/winched when it can be safely reached from a normally traveled or established thoroughfare (driveways must be cleared of snow or ice). If special equipment, additional service personnel or vehicles are required, the associated costs will be at the member’s expense. AAA Plus: Provides a second truck and second driver, for up to one hour, if your situation requires it. Lockout Service If your keys are locked inside the vehicle, service will be sent to gain entrance. If your keys are lost, broken, or the service provider cannot gain entrance to your vehicle, locksmith service up to $60 or, if a AAA locksmith is not available, reimbursement for locksmith service up to $60, will be provided. In cases where the vehicle cannot be made operable, towing services will be provided according to the towing provision. AAA Plus: Provides up to a total of $100 in parts and labor to gain entry or make vehicle operable. AAA Premier: Provides up to $150 for Locksmith, $100 Home Lockout Service. Service Limitations Members requiring more than four road service calls during their membership year will be charged for the fifth call and each succeeding call at the time of service. AAA Plus, AAA Plus RV, and AAA Premier services become effective seven days after receipt of your dues. Special Assistance When your vehicle cannot be made operable upon providing the services listed in this guide, AAA will assist you in finding the nearest open place of repair. If a repair facility cannot be located, we will assist you in obtaining lodging or alternate transportation, which will be at your expense. Types of Vehicles Serviced Service applies to four-wheeled motordriven vehicles of the passenger, pleasure or recreational type that were in operation

immediately prior to disablement — provided that services can be safely delivered. If specific towing equipment is requested, but not required to safely transport the vehicle, the associated cost will be at your expense. Dual-wheel campers/motor homes are eligible for all services except towing, extrication/winching and tire service. Dual-wheel unloaded pickup trucks are eligible for all services except tire services. Rented passenger vehicles, as well as four-wheeled commercial vehicles, (excluding taxis, limousines and vehicles with snow plows attached) are eligible for services. Motorcycles are ineligible for all services. Weather Emergencies During severe weather conditions, AAA reserves the right to suspend or limit service temporarily if the vehicle is already in a place of safety, such as a private or public garage, driveway, etc. AAA will provide service to the vehicle after the weather emergency is over. Alternate Service If you have followed the procedure outlined to obtain emergency road service, and AAA service is not available, you may obtain your own service, pay for it and submit the original receipt to your AAA club within 60 days. Reimbursement will be based on the prevailing commercial rate for the region where the vehicle was disabled. In instances where the AAA contractor access is legally restricted (toll roads, limited-access highways), reimbursement will be provided for all covered services. If AAA service was available, but not requested, reimbursement may be limited to the amount the club would normally have paid for the covered service. No reimbursements will be made by AAA on charges incurred when a member’s vehicle is removed from the street or under direction of the police because of illegal parking, traffic violations, or other illegal activities. Storage charges and clean-up fees from the scene of a traffic accident are also not eligible for reimbursement. Members having more than four road service calls during their membership year are not eligible for alternate service reimbursement.

Lakeland shines in sunny central Florida Region is stacking up a pile of new attractions

C

entrally located between Tampa and Orlando, Lakeland is just minutes from major attractions and the Gulf and Atlantic beaches. Water sports and nature abound on the region’s 554 lakes and golfers will find plenty of challenges in the more than 500 holes of golf. The renowned Polk Museum of Art is filled with Asian and contemporary paintings, European and American decorative arts, as well as an excellent collection of pre-Columbian and African art. Stroll through the lush tropical foliage at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, or the world’s largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. LEGOLAND® Florida in nearby Winter Haven, was inspired by the ubiquitous LEGO brick, dubbed “Toy of the Century” by Fortune Magazine. Florida’s newest family theme park features 150-acres of interactive rides and shows that include you, and those amazing LEGO® models. Miniland USA is the heart of every LEGOLAND Park, and home to eight remarkably themed areas with miniature versions of famous American landmarks. Nearly all of the rides and attractions are hands-on, so parents and kids can push, pull, pedal, program, steer, squirt, splash, crawl, climb, drive and build their way through more than 100 acres of non-stop fun. Attractions include Fun Town, offering families a firsthand

The recently opened DUPLO Valley, brings LEGO’s line of preschool building toys to life with new farm-themed attractions. LEGOLAND Florida has also taken great care to preserve the soul of the park —historic Cypress Gardens. The setting has been restored and reclaimed

to create a horticultural masterpiece. Highlights include a vast Banyan tree that was planted as a seedling in 1939. Frank Lloyd Wright came to Lakeland in 1938 to create a “great educational temple.” He designed 18 structures for Florida Southern College to resemble buildings rising “out of the ground... and into the sun.” Twelve were built,

Bok Tower Gardens is one of famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.’s crowning achievements. Tranquil resting places, shady recesses, picturesque vistas and expansive splashes of color create a quiet contemplative setting. The national landmark was constructed between 1922-1929 by Edward William Bok, a Dutch immigrant who amassed a fortune as editor of the Ladies Home Journal. The centerpiece of the gardens is the majestic Singing Tower, a 60-bell carillon set within a 205-foot tall, Gothic Revival and Art Deco tower. It sits on Iron Mountain, one of the highest points of peninsular Florida, and was constructed from pink and gray marble and Florida native coquina stone. The tower is surrounded by a 15-foot moat that serves as a Koi pond and a habitat for dozens of species of birds.
