The AAA Approved Auto Repair Program

Travel | Insurance/Financial | Automotive | Member Savings | AAA.com

AAA INTRODUCES NEW NO COST IDENTITY THEFT PROGRAM

October is Fall Car Care Month and AAA has identified a network of approved repair facilities that include new car dealerships and independent garages. These shops all meet AAA’s strict quality standards and display the AAA logo. When you see the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign, you’ll find highly trained technicians, a wide range of professional repair services and guaranteed workmanship. And while hundreds of repair facilities apply for the AAR rating each year, only about one-third are able to meet AAA’s rigid criteria. AAA ensures the repair facility has the right tools and equipment to provide a wide range of repairs. They must also adopt staff training qualifications and insurance guidelines. Finally, AAA surveys customers about their satisfaction with the facility. The AAR program protects members against repair failure, because all repairs, parts, labor, and components are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles under normal operating conditions. In addition, AAR shops have agreed to allow AAA to investigate repair service transactions that have been disputed by members and to abide by AAA’s resolution. See page 17 for a list of AAR garages in your area.

Avoiding common and costly life insurance mistakes Changes in relationships can impact the status of your beneficiary

L

ife insurance is one of the best sources of financial security for loved ones left behind after a death. One of the most important details of any life insurance policy is naming the beneficiary/beneficiaries for the policy. The beneficiary is the person(s) you wish to receive the proceeds from the policy upon your death. Believe it or not, there are some people that purchase their life insurance policy and neglect to select a beneficiary or never revisit the policy as life changes. You can save your loved ones a lot of time, money, and trouble by carefully selecting a beneficiary for your life insurance policy and making sure that information is kept applicable to your present situation. Most people don’t like to have conversations about anything involving death, but a possibly awkward conversation now can save your beneficiary the frustration and time of hunting down the information during what will already be a very difficult time for them. Here are three things you can do to avoid some of the most common and costly beneficiary mistakes:

Revisit the policy

Life is constantly in motion. Sometimes this motion doesn’t affect the relationships a person has, but

sion and legal challenges that can tie up the money or cause the omission of someone you wanted included. You want to be specific when naming a beneficiary. So, use the given name and not generic terms like child, parent, wife, or sibling.

Be cautious

STICK WITH THE PLAN — People often forget to revisit their insurance policies as life changes. more often than not it does. If relationship changes have an impact on the beneficiary you’ve selected, then the life insurance must be updated accordingly. And, we aren’t just talking about obvious deaths, divorces, births, or marriages. For example, if your children were underage when you first obtained your life insurance policy, then you might have established a guardian or trust. Once the children reach adulthood, it might make better

Some people name themselves or their estate as the beneficiary. This means that the life insurance benefit will go directly to their estate. However, naming yourself or your estate can leave the benefit subject to taxation and enable creditors to seize it for unpaid bills. Remember, if you have any questions, concerns, or doubts about your beneficiary designation, then you can always consult your tax advisor or attorney.

sense to name them directly as beneficiaries. Another example would be if a beneficiary is now elderly or no longer mentally competent. In such cases, it might make better sense to name an alternative beneficiary and make the appropriate provisions in your will to care for the previous beneficiary.

Newly revamped cruise ship lets the Sunshine in Carnival Destiny changes everything — including the name

C

ruise lines need to continually update their fleets to ensure existing ships match the stateof-the-art standards of their newer siblings. Sometimes these changes amount to little more than new carpet and drapes, or a refresh around the pool area. In the case of Carnival Destiny they decided to change everything, including the name. Launched in 1995, the world’s first 100,000-plus-ton cruise ship was a forerunner of a new class of grand-scale vessels. Now Destiny has a whole new destiny so to speak. The 3,006-passenger ship recently underwent a $155 million makeover morphing Carnival Destiny into Carnival Sunshine during a 49-day dry dock in Italy. The refit includes a radically reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck, the expansion of two other decks and 182 new cabins. Sunshine emerged in May with all of the elements of Carnival’s ground breaking Fun Ship 2.0 program, and several exciting new features all her own. Top-deck amenities include Serenity, a spectacular three-level adults-only retreat — the largest in the Carnival fleet — featuring a pool, waterfall, and magnificent sea views. WaterWorks is an all-new water park where you can zip down five different slides and have a splash-tastic time with 40 different interactive water fea-

Speedway Splash lets you slip slide away in dual, side-by-side 235-foot-long slides with racers’ times displayed on a scoreboard and special lighting effects that add to the adventure. The enclosed 334-foot-long Twister — Carnival’s longest slide — features a crystal clear turn that extends out over the edge of the ship. Diners will discover a tantalizing array of culinary choices. Ji Ji Asian Kitchen serves a diverse menu of deli-

Fahrenheit 555 is a classic American steakhouse with all the ambiance of a pre-war supper club. The Havana Bar pays homage to Cuba’s storied nightlife with palm trees, elegant archways, and vibrant tile work, along with floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic ocean vistas. By day, a casual gathering spot, at night, it transforms into a Cuban-inspired club with a cool Latin vibe. Alchemy Bar is a vintage-themed

cocktail “pharmacy.” Professional mixologists will “prescribe” concoctions from different elixirs and ingredients, or guests’ can create their own custom cocktails. Carnival Sunshine’s Limelight Lounge is home to the Punchliner Comedy Club Presented by George Lopez. A lineup of established and upand-coming comic talent is showcased in partnership with the popular TV personality who serves as Carnival’s “curator of comedy” In November, Carnival Sunshine will reposition from the Mediterranean to New Orleans, for a winter schedule of seven-day Caribbean cruises from the Big Easy through April 2014. Carnival Sunshine will then shift to Port Canaveral, Florida, for year-round five- to eight-day Caribbean departures beginning in April 2014.

Whether it’s the hottest headliner, or a trendy nightclub, there’s always something going on in the Entertainment Capital of the World. Rock of Ages at the Venetian takes us back to a time when big hair and spandex posed the greatest threats to our national security. Set in 1987, it’s the story of a young couple chasing their dreams of stardom on the Sunset Strip. Patrons can hold up battery-operated “lighters” and sing along with arena rock favorites like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” and “Don’t Stop Believin.” Country Music’s first couple — Tim McGraw and Faith Hill — have extended their limited engagement Soul2Soul tour at the intimate 1,815seat Venetian Theatre. Let Cancun be your place in the sun An oasis of flawless beaches and fabulous attractions

C

ancun could best be described as a beach with an island in the middle. Centuries ago, Mayan emperors traveled here to get some R&R. Today, this cosmopolitan resort perched on the limestone shelf of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is among the premier vacation spots on the planet. Luxury hotels line the Hotel Zone, a seahorse-shaped oasis connected by two causeways and flanked by the tranquil Nichupte Lagoon and the restless Caribbean Sea. People watchers can take a stroll on the Malecón Américas a palm-fringed promenade hugging the shoreline. Cancun’s twelve miles of beach are celebrated for their turquoise waters and powdery white sand. All are open to the public and anyone with the inclination can walk from one end to the other. You can either hike along the northern shore by the calm waters of Bahia de Mujeres, or follow the Caribbean Sea on the eastern shore. The sand here is like talcum powder and surprisingly cool, thanks to a limestone composition that doesn’t hold the heat. Playa Ballenas is the magnificent white beach that established Cancun’s reputation as a resort, while Playa Las Perlas is a favorite with boogie boarders because of the great wave action and

REACH THE BEACH — Cancun’s 12 miles of beach are celebrated for their brilliant turquoise waters and fine white sand. pickup volleyball games. Playa Linda is the main departure point to Isla Mujeres and for the submarine and dive excursions. Cancun’s waters are legendary for their clarity with schools of dazzling blue neons hovering among the rocks and piers. The otherworldly Underwater Museum, which opened in 2010, features more 400 life-size figures by English artist Jason deCaires Taylor, displayed in less than 10 feet of water.

Shoppers can bargain for authentic Mexican handicrafts, silver, Mayainspired art and designer clothing. The majority of open-air markets are located in El Centro, the downtown area, while the mercados on Tulum Avenue are a great place to practice your bargaining skills. Party animals will want to take full advantage of Cancun’s legendary nightlife at clubs like Dady Rock, Señor Frog’s and Coco Bongo, a multilevel mad-

house full of mammoth video screens, brilliantly costumed dancers, Cirque du Soleil-style acrobats, celebrity impersonators, conga lines, confetti canons and balloons. Cancun is close to several Mayan archeological sites including Tulum, located about 80-miles south of the city. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of all Mayan sites, Tulum is the only Mayan city built next to the sea, which provides a spectacular backdrop for its well-preserved ruins. Chichen-Itza, located about 2-hours from Cancun, was the political and economic center of the Mayan civilization. The expansive ruins cover about six square miles, and are dominated by the 75-foot-tall Kulkulkan pyramid, which functions as a giant solar calendar. During the equinox, the sunlight sends an image of a serpent undulating down the temple walls. IF YOU GO

AAA sponsors Don’t Text and Drive billboards Message reminds motorists that it’s the law

A

AA has unveiled twelve billboards in Jefferson County putting a simple message in front of motorists; Don’t Text and Drive, It’s The Law. Designed to reinforce the texting ban in Kentucky, which took effect on January 1st, 2011, the law prohibits drivers from texting while their vehicle is in motion and prohibits both texting and cell phone use for drivers under eighteen. Specifically, the law says no person may write, send or read a text -based communication (including text messages, instant messages and emails) while operating a motor vehicle that is in motion. It also says that no person under the age of 18 may operate a motor vehicle while using a personal communication device (including talking, texting or emailing on cell phones, smart phones or other PDAs) except when it is necessary to summon medical help or law enforcement in an emergency situation. Between 2009 and 2012, the number of people who admit to texting while driving has increased from 21 percent to 26 percent “The law provides for primary enforcement, meaning that a law enforcement officer can stop and cite you for an observed violation of the law and the penalty is a $25 fine for the first

offense and $50 for each subsequent offense.” said Roger Boyd, Director of Public Affairs for AAA East Central Kentucky Region. With thousands of drivers passing these billboards each day, AAA hopes to remind motorists to put that cell phone down and pay attention to the road. Since the beginning of 2012, 12,000 collisions in Kentucky have occurred in which drivers had cell phones in their hands.

“Like most traffic safety issues, it comes down to the responsibility of the motorist to obey the law,” said Boyd.

“These billboards will remind motorists that it’s time to put their focus back on driving as safe as possible.”

Free Car Care Check To make sure your car is ready for winter, AAA wants to remind motorists about our upcoming Car Care check at the Rescue Rangers office at 2026 Old Shepherdsville Road on October 10th and 11th between the hours of 1 p.m. and 7

p.m. Refreshments will be provided. Plus, many of AAA’s Approved Auto Repair locations will be offering free inspections, by appointment only, during the week of October 14th - 18th. For a list of AAA’s AAR facilities, go to AAA.com.

Safe winter driving is all about being prepared

the key to being properly prepared is taking the necessary steps before getting behind the wheel. Before driving in inclement weather, be sure that your vehicle is properly maintained. According to a survey conducted by the Car Care Council,

inter weather means frigid temperatures, heavy snow and icy road conditions, which can spell trouble for even for the most experienced driver. Safe winter driving is all about the preparation and

use required safety devices such as seatbelts. Along with winterizing your vehicle, drivers in areas with more than three months of winter weather should consider installing winter tires. Corroded terminals, a bulging or cracked case are sure signs that a battery has been subject to extreme conditions. Test batteries if they are four years old or older. While batteries can last more than five years in ideal driving conditions, factors such as temperature, the car’s age and nature of usage can impact the life of a battery. Batteries often do not give noticeable warning signs if they’re about to fail. Visibility is crucial. Safe and responsible vehicle operation requires that front, rear, and side windows are clear. Snow left on the hood will blow onto the windshield and clog wipers as speed increases. Snow left on the roof will blow off and obscure the rear window and the windshield of the car behind. Clearing headlights, signal lights, and taillights will allow you to be seen. Motorists should always carry a winter driving kit that includes blankets, water, snacks, first-aid supplies, flashlights, charged cell phones, shovels, and sand or kitty litter. Have a bright-colored cloth to tie to your antenna to help make your car more visible, in case you get stranded.
