Congress made the effort to protect the area from settlements by designating the region America’s first national park. That effort grew into a larger movement to preserve these kinds of sites, where the natural beauty inspires and educates visitors, and eventually led to the creation of the National Park Service (NPS), established by an act signed by Woodrow Wilson on Aug 25, 1916. Today, the NPS also administers national monuments, recreation areas, seashores, lakeshores and historic parks & memorials. Its programs focus on wildlife conservation, natural resources and outdoor recreation. Its 408 sites cover more than 84 million acres. There’s a NPS site in every state, the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. CARFAX Vehicle History Reports™ are available on every used car and light truck model year 1981 or later using the unique 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN). Each CARFAX Vehicle History Report™ contains a wealth of valuable information that can impact a consumer's buying decision such as: • Title information, including salvaged, rebuilt, or junked titles; • Flood damage history; • Total loss accident history; • Odometer readings including mileage rollbacks or rollovers; • Lemon history; • Number of owners; • Accident indicators, such as airbag deployments and structural damage; • State emissions inspection results; • Service, inspection and registration history; • Warranty information; • Recall Information; • Vehicle use (taxi, rental, lease, etc.). Although CARFAX doesn’t promise to have every repair or accident record for every vehicle, or that had its odometer rolled back; it does provide consumers with detailed, in-depth ownership information. AAA still recommends having any prospective used car purchase checked out by a reputable repair facility -- like those who participate in AAA’s Approved Auto Repair program. If you are shopping for a used car, don’t waste time looking at vehicles with a less than desirable past. Start your search at AAA.com/CarfaxReport and filter your results by one-owner cars, accident history, cars with service records, and more. Find the right used car, at the right price, with the help of CARFAX and AAA!

Buying a House? Here’s Some Help for New Homebuyers
What you need to know now about homeowners insurance by Robin Jones
I
f you’re shopping for a home, you might be looking for something with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an updated kitchen, and a big backyard for the kids and the dog. Add one more thing to that list: good homeowners insurance. That’s because when you’re in escrow, your mortgage lender will require you to buy a policy before the sale is final. Since your new home is likely to become your most valuable asset, it’s important to understand the types of coverage that are available so you can decide the kind and amount of insurance that is right for you. It’s also helpful to be aware of insurability issues. Coverage to consider — A standard homeowners policy covers the dwelling, additional structures, personal property, and loss of use should your home become uninhabitable due to a covered loss. It also provides you with some liability coverage if someone gets hurt on your property. Be sure to ask your insurance agent about the various
types of homeowners policies available, along with the different coverage and premiums associated with them. When the need arises, you don’t want to be surprised that the coverage you have is not what you expected. Also, know that most insurance policies may not cover losses from certain natural disasters, but government agencies or specialized insurance companies offer plans that are worth considering—and might even be required, if your home is in a designated high-risk flood zone, for example. Many insurers offer a multi-policy discount, so it may be a good idea to have both your auto and home insurance policies with the same company. Insurability issues — Insurance companies will look at “acceptability criteria” when they decide whether or not to insure a home. The criteria include things such as the type of construction (e.g., wood or masonry), the type of roof (e.g., composite shingle or tile), and the use of the dwelling (owner-occupied or rented out).

A SMART DECISION — The right insurance for new home buyers can bring peace of mind.
While the acceptability criteria vary by insurer, many carriers consider certain common factors. First, insurers usually look at the prior claims history of the applicant and the home he or she is seeking to insure. Second, they may consider any characteristic of the home or property that could create a liability issue. That might be a broken handrail, uneven pavement, or a swimming pool without a safety fence. Depending on the age of a house or its prior loss history, an insurance

company may require a home inspection before the buyer can obtain a homeowners policy. If an inspection is required, the inspector may also look for evidence of prior damage—for instance, a stain on the ceiling indicating that the roof is leaking or any wall or floor damage pointing to water seepage or leaks. With all the headaches of buying a new home, good homeowners insurance can bring peace of mind to the process.

Before You Hit the Road This Summer … Trust AAA to steer you in the right direction For many families, the summer • Check the level and condition of Program the AAA season means at least one big family car trip. Whether you’re heading out for a day at the beach or on a cross-country adventure, AAA wants your summer road trip to be safe and enjoyable. One of the fastest ways to put the brakes on a great vacation is with an emergency. But by planning ahead and preparing properly, travelers can minimize risk. AAA offers these precautionary tips: Car Maintenance • Consider having your car checked by an automotive technician before a long trip. An ounce of prevention can be worth a pound of cure. Visit a AAA Approved Auto Repair Shop to make sure your vehicle is up to making the trip. • Check the tires regularly for uneven or excessive tread wear. Make sure all items, including the spare, are inflated properly. Do at least one check BEFORE hitting the road, as tires hot from driving give inaccurate inflation readings. • Check the coolant level and condition, making certain the proper 50/50 mixture of water and coolant is present.
the engine oil. If driving under extreme conditions – such as very hot summer weather or pulling a heavy trailer – you may want to consider switching to a higher viscosity oil. Check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations. • Look for worn, cracked, blistered or soft belts or hoses. Always perform this check with the engine off. • Hot weather can shorten the life of a car’s battery – if there’s concern, have it tested by a qualified automotive technician. With AAA’s Mobile Battery Program you can have your battery tested, and if necessary, a new battery can be purchased and installed on the spot! Travel Planning • Carry an emergency kit with a flashlight, extra batteries, warning devices such as flares or reflective triangles, jumper cables, a first-aid kit drinking water and snacks, and a basic tool kit. • Keep a cell phone and a car charger with you at all times in case of emergency.
Emergency Road Service phone number (1-800-AAAHELP) into your cell phone for single click dialing should you need AAA service in the event of a breakdown. Keep in mind that using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle is considered distracted driving and is inherently dangerous. If you need to make a call while you are driving, pull off to the side of the road or to an area of safety before dialing. • Download the AAA Mobile App on your smart phone or tablet. Not only will you be able to reach AAA for roadside assistance, but you will also have access to the AAA TourBook® guide information and other travel planning tools. • Visit FuelCostCalculator.AAA.com to determine how much money you need to budget for gas during your trip. You will get a customized estimate of fuel costs based on your vehicle type, destination, and current fuel prices. Never let your gas level drop below onequarter of a tank. • Map out your route in advance and be prepared for busy roads during
the popular summer travel season. The TripTik® Travel Planner is a great online tool that helps you map out not only your route, but also provides information on gas station locations, lodging, restaurants and attractions along the way. • Reserve all hotel/motel accommodations in advance. • Keep anything of value in the trunk of your car or in a covered storage area. Lock your car when you leave it and make sure any loose objects are secured in the vehicle. • Make sure everyone is properly restrained by a safety belt or child safety seat or booster seat to prevent injury in case of a sudden stop, swerve or collision. Remember, in most states seat belt use is required by law. • Bring books, games, or music for the ride, and a pillow so passengers can sleep. • Bring information on your destination to make the most of your trip. AAA hopes you have a safe and enjoyable vacation.

BRAND-NEW TOUR! AAA Traveler | MAY/JUNE 2016

Never cruised before? This is for you! Cruising is the perfect way to relax in comfortable, elegant surroundings; visit exotic destinations; meet new friends; and enjoy fantastic food. Cruises are fundamentally hassle-free...but, for those on their first cruise, it can feel like entering a world of “unknowns.” To help first-time cruising “newcomers” get their sea legs, here’s some useful information: Do a bit of homework. There was a time when cruising meant a flight to Miami and a slow boat to the Caribbean. Now there are endless destinations to choose from — from Asia to Antarctica — and many regional departure points, so take the time to find your perfect cruise itinerary. As an alternative to flying to a far-off departure city, you might consider driving or motorcoaching to a closer port (New York/New Jersey, Baltimore, etc), which could save you money and stress. Cruise fare includes accommodations, meals in main dining venues, activities (including children’s programs) and nighttime entertainment — not to mention transportation from port to port. When you factor in all of the costs you’d incur on a land vacation, as well as the great deals you can currently find on cruise travel, you’ll discover that you can actually save by booking a cruise, compared to a land-based vacation. Ships come in a variety of sizes and personalities. You’ll find a myriad of ship variations — big, small, explorer-oriented, decadent luxury, family-friendly — and one that’s right for you! Consider splurging on a balcony stateroom; this semi-private relaxation area affords expansive ocean vistas and potentially spectacular sunrises and sunsets that can make the extra cost well worth it. Pack just what you need. According to some estimates, many first-time cruisers pack twice as many clothes as they need. There’s no good reason to bring 15 pairs of shoes on a 7-day cruise. Rely on this: “When in doubt, leave it out.” Worst-case scenario: You can always pick up anything you absolutely need (but didn't bring or forgot to bring) on the ship or in a port of call on your journey. Pack swim suits in a carry-on; it may take a
short while for luggage delivery to reach your stateroom. Visiting the pool can be a great timefiller until you can completely unpack. Try new foods, new activities. Seagoing gourmets can break bread in French or Italian bistros, sup in sea-view cafés, pork out in pizzerias or flambé at intimate restaurants branded by celebrity chefs. You can sample tableside cooking in dine-in wine cellars or graze on eclectic offerings from every part of the globe. Dining options include New York–style delis, patisseries, sushi bars and “steakhousestyle” supper clubs. Consider pre-booking shore excursions. Most cruise lines allow you to pre-book sightseeing tours, scuba trips, etc, months in advance — saving time otherwise spent waiting in an onboard line — and ensuring the adventure isn’t sold out before you’re able to sign up. Be aware of the ship’s cancellation policy, just in case you change your mind once the vacation is under way. Get involved. All cruise ships offer plenty of onboard activities, so you can enjoy high-energy floor shows, flirt with Lady Luck in onboard casinos, dance cheek-to-cheek or savor the sea air on a moonlit stroll on deck. If you seek intellectual fulfillment, cruise lines offer onboard enrichment programs (on diverse topics such as language, music and cooking) and guest lecturers who are experts in their fields. There are even a growing number of theme cruises, where you can learn to dribble from an NBA star; explore art, music or food; or take driving lessons from a NASCAR champion. You can participate in contests, do crafts, watch movies or simply grab a book and get a tan. Keep fit. Some say the average person gains about 5
pounds on a 1-week cruise. But, for those watching calories, be assured there are low-fat and often low-carb options on the menus, and buffets often offer some healthier choices. Also, there’s a workout plan for everyone, and you can actually end up in even better physical condition than when you started. Fitness and spa facilities on most ships are equal to — and in many cases exceed — the best land-based facilities. Classes may include Pilates, tai chi and kickboxing, and personal trainers are often available to offer customized exercise programs. Most ships have wooden promenade decks, and the invigorating sea air makes walking or jogging a breeze. Play some hoops or visit the ship’s gym, and there are always pools for soaking & swimming. Stay connected...if you like. Most ships have internet centers and shipboard Wi-Fi, so you can read e-mail and surf the web. Most offer CNN or some other cable news network on your in-room TV. You can make phone calls from the phone in your stateroom and from your cell phone as well (roaming charges apply). Mind the clock...away from the dock. With all the activities available on shore, it’s easy to lose track of time with all the sights, sounds and smells of a new destination. When you leave the ship, remember to be back in good time and that cruise lines typically use the 24-hour clock (where the day is divided into 24 hours, and 16:00 is not the same as 6:00pm). Speak with a AAA travel agent. AAA travel agents are cruise experts. For trip planning assistance, visit or call your local AAA Travel office.

A cruise “veteran”? This is for you! You’ve cruised before...and you loved it. You’ve sailed the islands of the Caribbean... maybe even to Canada & New England. And now you’re looking for something a little different. Take a look below at some exciting and out-of-the-ordinary cruise vacation options available at AAA Travel. Repositioning Cruises Birds do it, so do butterflies and whales. Even cruise ships migrate with the seasons. And for a growing number of savvy travelers, the change of seasons is a welcome signal to pack up and go on a repositioning cruise. Repositioning cruises offer many advantages, including one-of-a-kind itineraries and a unique combination of ports. Passengers not only enjoy all the usual onboard amenities , many cruise lines enhance repositioning cruises with extra at-sea days, special themes and out-of-theordinary entertainment. Cruise ships follow the sun. The most common repositioning cruises sail either north for the summer or south for the winter. In the fall, many return to the Caribbean from Europe. Cooling fall temperatures can also signal hot cruise deals with a variety of special offseason and promotional rates, which can make a repositioning cruise a genuine bargain. This rare combination of exotic off-the-beaten-path locales, leisurely days at sea and incredible value means they often sell out early. Transatlantic Crossings Transatlantic cruises once were the heart of daily commerce across the Atlantic Ocean, but today most transatlantic sailings take place when the cruise fleets migrate from the Caribbean to Europe and back during spring and fall. These crossings feature long tranquil days at sea along with one-of-a-kind port calls. Down Under Cruises Koala bears, kangaroos and kiwi birds await cruisers who sail the ports of Australia
and New Zealand. Few travel experiences rival the excitement of sailing into Sydney and Auckland, the awe-inspiring scenery of Fiordland National Park and the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, to name just a few. Hawaii Cruises Cruising is the best way to experience Hawaii’s scenic splendor. Scattered like pearls around the North Pacific, the islands are a rich melange of people, cultures and cuisines with endless leisure opportunities. A garden of earthly delights where soothing green vistas are capped by towering volcanic peaks. No doubt about it: The popularity of Hawaiian cruises is on the rise. Cruisers returning from the Aloha State typically rave about their experiences, fanning the flames of interest and sparking new “converts.” Who can resist sunshine-splashed days, star-filled nights, flower-scented breezes, jewel-tone waters? Cruising around Hawaii’s 4 major islands is a stress- and hassle-free way to move from place to place. There’s absolutely no squandering precious vacation time. Settle into your stateroom — once — and that’s it. Unpack just once (that alone is priceless!) and forget about lugging suitcases, scurrying for interisland flights, checking in & out of hotels and worrying about long security checks, delays and other hassles associated with airports. Panama Canal Cruises The Panama Canal has been called the “Big Ditch” and the “8th Wonder of the Modern World.” The romance of crossing 2 oceans in a single day remains no less compelling than it
did centuries ago, when mariners first dreamed of carving a route through the narrow isthmus linking 2 continents. Travelers have marveled at this system of man-made channels, locks, dams and artificial lakes that connect the Pacific to the Atlantic. The canal is about 50 miles long, with an average transit time of 9 hours. Each of the locks has concrete walls 1,000 feet long and 81 feet high and is designed to raise giant ships 85 feet from sea to sea. The Spanish first surveyed a canal route through the Isthmus of Panama in 1534, but it would be more than 300 years before construction finally began. A French company started digging in 1880, but the project went bankrupt. In 1902 the US purchased the French holdings in Panama for $40 million and the US Army Corps of Engineers were put in charge of construction. It would take 10 more years, $387 million and countless lives to complete. River Cruises More travelers are discovering this exceptional travel “current” that takes you to (and into) destinations in ways no other tour can; river cruising is relaxing, exciting, even educational (in the most enjoyable way!). Luxurious liners glide in style into places ocean cruises can’t reach; enjoy more time to get an authentic sense of a place. Dock in the heart of a city; little time is needed to transfer to points of interest. Local entertainers may even board your vessel for cultural performances. River cruises average 130 guests (ocean liners host thousands); expect a quiet, intimate onboard atmosphere, with more space per person.

Why Travel Insurance from Allianz Global Assistance? Imagine you’re waiting in the airport and the status of your connecting flight suddenly changes from “On-Time” to “Delayed.” At first it’s just by a few minutes…then it’s an hour…then two. Before you know it, you’ve bought three cups of coffee, eaten dinner, and your flight is cancelled. Now, you can either fork out more cash for a hotel or sleep next to the boarding gate. No one likes to spend extra money. But anything can happen when you’re traveling, and the insurance offered through a tour operator or cruise line might not be as comprehensive as you think. Travel insurance, on the other hand, can protect you and your wallet from a wide array of travel-related problems and emergencies—freeing you up to enjoy your vacation. Trip delays, interruptions, and cancellations can cause a lot of unexpected headaches and expenses. This is where travel insurance can help. It can cover the adjustments you need to make to get your trip back on track. And should something worse happen, like a medical emergency before you depart, it can reimburse you for the entire cost of your trip. Where a cruise line might give you a voucher, travel insurance can put cash back in your pocket. Medical emergencies while overseas can happen to anyone, and most personal health
insurance policies (including Medicare) don’t offer coverage outside the U.S., which is why the State Department recommends travel insurance. It can help you get emergency medical care while overseas and get back home after treatment. Plus, it usually comes with a higher amount of coverage than the insurance offered by tour operators. Lost, damaged, or stolen luggage is a common problem that can put a damper on any vacation. Have you ever arrived at your destination only to find that your luggage is missing? Making due without your stuff isn’t fun. Thankfully, travel insurance can protect you when other insurance options do not—covering up to hundreds of dollars in reimbursement if you need to purchase new clothes, toiletries, and other essentials for your trip right away. Rental car accidents and break-ins can trigger a number of unexpected fees. You could be required to pay a deductible, compensate the rental company for financial losses, and your policy premium could go up. Travel insurance can protect you from all of these extra costs, and it’s usually cheaper than the insurance offered by the rental company. As you can see, travel insurance is the smart choice for AAA members who want to be prepared for the unexpected while on vacation. If
you have any questions, or you need to purchase an insurance package for an upcoming trip, visit our travel insurance page or stop by your local AAA store. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. Insurance products are underwritten by BCS Insurance Company or Jefferson Insurance Company. Plans may not be available in all jurisdictions. AGA Service Company is the licensed producer and administrator of these plans.

History of Falling Increases Crash Risk for Older Drivers
New study finds preventing falls may make roads safer is the latest research released in Older drivers with a history of Adults, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s falling are 40 percent more likely to be involved in crashes than their peers, according to a new study released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Falls limit an older drivers’ ability to function behind the wheel and can make driving risky for themselves and others on the road. These findings are important since annually a record 12 million older adults will experience a fall. Drivers age 60 and older are involved in more than 400,000 crashes each year, and it’s important that we find ways to keep them and others safe on the road. Although seniors are more likely to wear seatbelts, and are less likely to speed or drink and drive, they are also much more likely to die when a crash occurs. This research is critical because it shows that we can now use an older driver’s fall history to identify whether they are at greater risk for a crash. Researchers from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus along with the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety say that falls can increase crash risk in two ways: • Falls can result in a loss of functional ability (i.e. wrist fractures or a broken leg), which can make it difficult for older drivers to steer or brake to avoid a crash. • Falls can increase an individual’s fear of falling, which can lead to a decrease in physical activity that weakens driving skills. The research suggests that seniors and their families should view falls as a possible early indicator of declining physical fitness. How You Can Prevent Grand Theft Auto
Take It to the Limit with AAA Premier
the primary mode of transportation for most of us, and often an indispensable part of our lives. It can be a lifeline to food and medical care or your only access to opportunity like a job or school. But what would happen if yours suddenly disappeared? In the United States a vehicle is stolen approximately every 44 seconds. Nearly 45 percent of these vehicles are never recovered. Highdemand luxury and sports cars are often shipped abroad and sold overseas. Others like your daily driver end up in chop shops where they are taken apart and sold as parts that can often amount to two to three times their value as a whole. Radios and expensive wheels aren’t the only popular stolen vehicle parts thieves covet. They want whatever sells, and some of the most popular parts are engines, transmissions, body panels, air bags, radios, catalytic converters and valuables left in vehicles like laptops and purses. The estimated total value of vehicles stolen nationwide is approximately $4.1 billion. Car thefts have been on a downward trajectory since 2007 largely due to the widespread adoption of immobilizer technology. Even though the overall decline in vehicle thefts is great news, don’t think it can’t happen to you. Nearly half of vehicle theft is due to driver error, such as leaving your keys in the vehicle or leaving it running while you make a quick trip to the store. Summertime is prime time for car thieves with July and August the two busiest months. To protect your vehicle most experts recommend a layered approach — combining both passive and active devices to thwart even the most ambitious thieves. Common Sense: Lock your car and take your keys. It’s simple enough but many thefts occur because owners make it easy for thieves to steal their cars. Eighty percent of vehicle thefts occur while the doors are unlocked. About 20 percent of vehicles stolen have the keys in the ignition. Warning Device: Having and using a visible or audible warning device is another item that can ensure that your

KEEP YOUR CAR SAFE
Here are some common sense ways to help prevent your vehicle from being stolen: • Never leave your car running unattended • Lock it up. When leaving your car, lock all doors, close all windows • Don’t leave valuables in plain sight. A laptop computer or cell phone is a tempting target for thieves. Take them with you or lock them in your trunk • Avoid parking in isolated or dimly lit areas. Opt for well-lit, attended lots whenever possible • Park inside. Locking your car inside provides an extra layer of protection. car remains where you left it. Signs of these devices —such as a steeringwheel locks or a warning light— keep crooks away. Immobilizing Device: Generally speaking, if your vehicle can’t be started, it can’t be stolen. “Kill” switches, fuel cut-offs and smart keys are among the devices, which are extremely effective. Tracking Device: These systems combine GPS and wireless technologies to allow remote monitoring. If the vehicle is moved, the system will alert the owner and it can be tracked via computer. Some will even slow the vehicle down. Not only do anti-theft devices give your car extra protection and encourage thieves to go elsewhere, they also may help you save money on your car insurance.

Technology is Making it Easier to See the Light New headlights from Ford won't blind oncoming drivers Driving at night, particularly on and means drivers can see significantly Further semi- SEEING THINGS — unlit roads, can be a nerve-wracking experience. Poor visibility, especially at night, is a serious driving hazard. According to According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about half of deadly accidents occur during night, despite the fact that nighttime driving accounts for only 25 percent of overall traffic. Ford has now developed a technology that enables drivers to take full advantage of their headlights’ capability, without dazzling other drivers. Glare-Free Highbeam uses a windshield-mounted camera to detect the headlights or taillights of vehicles and bicycles up to 875 yards away at night, and uses specially developed headlights to block light that could otherwise temporarily blind other drivers and cyclists. Driving with high-beam headlights enables drivers to see hazards in the road much earlier. And studies have shown that automated high-beam headlights are activated up to 10 times more than when drivers have to switch to highbeam themselves. “Ford’s new Glare-Free Highbeam helps maximize the use of high beam
more of the road ahead, without causing any distraction to other road users,” said Michael Koherr, research engineer, Lighting Systems, Ford of Europe. The technology was developed by a global team of Ford engineers and supplier partners. Testing included a purpose-built light simulation area and test drives in night-time conditions around the globe. Glare-Free Highbeam works together with Ford’s Auto High Beam system, and Ford Dynamic LED headlights with Adaptive Front Lighting System, which can adjust the headlight beam angle and intensity to one of seven settings according to speed, ambient light, steering angle, distance to the vehicle in front and windshield wiper activation. Ford’s automated lighting technologies are automatically activated when low ambient light conditions are detected. “Ford’s Glare-Free Highbeam technology can remove that stress for drivers, and softly transitioning between settings also helps the driver’s eyes adjust faster to changing quantities of light,” Koherr said.
