AAA Auto Buying Tools app wins accolades

The AAA Auto Buying Tools app was among “5 essential apps for buying a car” featured recently by TechHive. The profile focused on the ease with which the AAA app takes users from conducting initial vehicle research to making purchase reservations, as well as available tools and options. These include a tool to help users find a vehicle’s history by entering or scanning its vehicle identification number. The number of multi-device car shoppers — those using a combination of their personal computer, smartphone and/or tablet — is predicted to more than double by 2018.

inter’s frigid temperatures can take their toll on a car’s battery. The energy required to start and heat your vehicle in cold weather places significant strain on your battery. In fact, if the temperature drops to zero or below, your battery likely has only half its normal power. The last thing you want to face on a chilly morning is a car that won’t start, especially when you have a busy day ahead. Jump-starting your vehicle may get you back on the road quickly, but it’s a short-term fix for long-term battery problems. AAA Battery Service is a convenient member benefit that offers free diagnosis and technicians that come to you, saving you time and giving you piece of mind. “More than 1 million motorists have used AAA Battery Service,” said Steve Popovich, managing director of AAA East Central’s Automotive Service Department. “Mobile battery service eliminates the inconvenience of finding a repair shop, making an appointment and sitting in a waiting room while a new battery is installed. It is another example of how AAA continues to identify ways to make members’ hectic lives a bit easier.” When a AAA member requests roadside assistance and the problem is believed to be battery related, a battery service vehicle will be dispatched. Join the fight against this killer on the road By Richard Hamilton Chairman, AAA East Central he holiday season is a time to celebrate, but it can also lead to trouble on the road. Cars are packed, traffic is heavy and the weather outside may be frightful. Tempers become frayed and drivers are often exhausted from a long ride. Add alcohol to the mix and you have a recipe for disaster. About 40 percent of all traffic fatalities between Christmas and New Year’s involve alcohol. The first day of the year is also the deadliest day of the year for alcohol-related fatalities for motorists and pedestrians alike. You’ve all heard of Black Friday. Now there’s “Blackout Wednesday” thanks to a staggering increase in binge drinking and alcohol-fueled crashes on the night before Thanksgiving. The real tragedy is that drunk driving injuries and deaths are totally preventable if people make responsible choices. Spurred on by organizations like AAA and like-minded stakeholders, tougher legislation, and more proactive enforcement, drunk driving fatalities have declined by nearly 40 percent in the past two decades. Other contributing factors include shifting demographics and major improvements in emergency medicine and vehicle safety. Although social drinkers are much more aware of the risks, those who continue to drink and drive are more likely to be hard-core offenders, habitual drinkers who regularly consume large amounts of alcohol and drive

T

Richard Hamilton afterwards. About one-third of those arrested for drunk driving are repeat offenders, and up to two-thirds of those with suspended licenses still drive. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration those drivers are responsible for approximately 70 percent of all alcohol-related traffic fatalities. Clearly, more work needs to be done preventing drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel. AAA supports requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted DUI offenders. These devices prevent operation of the vehicle by anyone with a blood alcohol content (BAC) above a specified safe level. When installed, interlocks are associated with about a 70 percent reduction in arrest

rates for impaired driving. AAA is also working year-round to educate motorists about the hazards and driving practices that will help keep them safe and reduce alcoholrelated crashes. PreventDUI.AAA.com is an online resource offering impaired driving facts, transportation alternatives and expert advice. While you’re there, AAA encourages visitors to Take the Pledge to drive drug and alcoholfree. Simply provide your name, email and zip code, and “sign” the pledge by checking the box. Then, help spread the word to family and friends via social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Send personalized e-cards to encourage others to do the same with timely messages that could one day help save their lives. PreventDUI.AAA.com also helps AAA members become more effective advocates. It’s not only a gateway for people to publicly commit to the fight against impaired driving, but a valuable resource for prevention tips and up-todate statistics to help people drive more responsibly. If you’re planning to drink this holiday season, make sure you bring a designated driver. If you feel like you’ve had too much to drink, call a friend or a cab — don’t drive. Never allow yourself or your loved ones to ride in a vehicle driven by someone who is intoxicated. We’ve all seen the consequences of having “one too many” and the stakes are just too high to gamble with the legal limit.

Ring in the New Year with AAA Premier Up to 200 miles free towing and more

N

ow is the season when people often begin thinking about New Year’s resolutions. This year, resolve to protect your family both at home and on the road with an upgrade to AAA Premier membership, AAA’s most comprehensive package of services and benefits. “We introduced AAA Premier after determining that members were looking for even higher levels of protection and benefits than those of basic or AAA Plus membership,” said John Herrilko, AAA East Central Senior Vice President. AAA Premier is perfect for members planning to hit the road for the holidays. AAA Premier roadside assistance includes one tow of up to 200 miles per household per membership year, in addition to three remaining calls, which can be tows of up to 100 miles. If your vehicle does need to be towed, you’ll also be reimbursed for up to $55 in car-rental fees. If you rent from Hertz, you will receive a second day’s rental free on a minimum two-day emergency rental.

AAA Premier also includes trip interruption protection. Members are eligible for up to $1,500 toward the cost of substitute transportation and/or accommodations, should travel plans be delayed or interrupted (when driving 100 miles or more from home) due to an accident, mechanical breakdown, car theft or illness. In addition, members qualify for up to $500 in vehicle return coverage if car issues result in the use of substitute transportation. “People are amazed how quickly costs can add up, and how much these Premier benefits alone can help out when the unexpected happens,” said Herrilko. “With trip interruption and vehicle return coverage, members can quickly get back on schedule and complete their trip.” Some of the most commonly used AAA Premier benefits can be found at your local AAA branch office. Premier members can receive passport photos or personal notary service at no charge. In addition, the $25 per person airline reservation fee is waived for AAA Premier members who book reserva-

tions at their AAA Travel Agency. AAA Premier members also save 15 percent on luggage and travel accessories at AAA Travel Stores in AAA East Central branch offices. Use your discount to buy gifts for the traveler on your holiday shopping list, or to stock up on essentials for your winter vacation getaway. “With all that AAA Premier membership has to offer, there’s a good chance that your family will use at least one of these benefits each year,” Herrilko said. “And almost all of these benefits pay for the cost of annual membership in themselves. That’s why we think it’s become so popular among our members.” Visit www.AAA.com/premier for a comparison of AAA basic, AAA Plus and AAA Premier benefits. AAA Premier is available at an annual fee of just $35 per household, in addition to the member’s basic and AAA Plus membership dues. To upgrade to AAA Premier, call or stop by your local AAA branch office, or contact the Club’s Member Service Call Center at 800.441.5008.

What you need to know about travel insurance Why no two travel insurance policies are the same

P

lanning a vacation requires preparation: reserving transportation and accommodations, applying for a passport or visa, and researching the destination. There are some travel factors that are impossible to anticipate. With the correct travel insurance coverage, however, you don’t need to worry. “Travel insurance is a way of protecting your investment, just as you would with your home or your vehicle,” said Ruth Nagy, AAA East Central managing director, travel operations. “You worked hard to earn that money to be able to take a vacation, so if you need to cancel or change your travel plans for a valid covered reason, you’re going to want that money back.” Trip cancellation insurance is one of the most popular types of travel insurance. It reimburses your travel expenses if your trip is delayed or cancelled for a valid reason, such as severe weather or major illness. Other reasons often covered by trip cancellation policies include: death of an immediate family member, jury duty, and bankruptcy of the travel vendor. If your trip cancellation policy does not cover a specific reason that may apply to your situation — such as military deployment or pregnancy — talk with your agent to see if that coverage can be added on. Additional options on travel insurance coverage may include reimbursement

pocket, which can be expensive. Many travel insurance plans include options to cover expenses and medical evacuation, if needed. There may be exclusions such as preexisting condition, so review the coverage and ask your agent about what options are best for your situation. There are several factors affecting the cost of a travel insurance policy, including the age of the travelers, the length of the trip, and the distance they are traveling. In most instances, a travel insurance policy costs approximately 10 to 20 percent of the total trip cost. Before deciding on any travel insurance plan, be sure you understand what you’re buying and what each policy does and does not cover. “I always encourage travelers to read the policy, understand the policy and ask any questions they may have before they leave for their trip,” said Nagy. “You want to make sure your plan includes the coverage that best fits your specific needs.”

BE PREPARED — Lost luggage, bad weather, medical emergencies, and natural disasters can all impact your travel plans. for delayed or lost luggage and missed connection coverage. Emergency medical coverage is another important aspect of travel insurance. If traveling internationally, most people are not covered by

their health insurance. Even if you are staying within the United States, your health insurance may not cover outof-network care. If you should need medical treatment on your vacation, you will most likely have to pay out-of-

SOUTH AMERICA

Been there? Done that? Here’s a spectacular getaway for those “tired” of Europe or “over” the Caribbean. Look to the intriguing, inviting lands of South America! This all-too-unsung continent boasts some of the world’s most fascinating natural & manmade landmarks, a colorful tapestry of native & European-influenced cultures and unique travel experiences that rival or surpass destinations you've already seen. “Treasures of South America,” a 17-night escorted AAA Featured Vacation, starts with a bang in exciting Rio de Janeiro. This vibrant city pulses with life 24-7 and is in full-speed prep to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Stroll the sands at Ipanema, ride a cable car to the top of Sugarloaf and marvel at vistas from atop Corcovado, from which you and “Christ the Redeemer” tower over the sights & sounds of this friendly city. Indulge in a churrascaria, a seemingly unending feast of marinated & barbecued meats, while sipping a sweet/sour (sugar cane liquor & lime) caipirinha. Leave the uber-urban metropolis for the primal atmosphere of Iguazu, one of the world’s largest & most breathtaking waterfalls. Feel its mist & power...then dine at the nexus of the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Refreshed, fly to the wine country of Mendoza, Argentina, for touring and tastings before visiting the “Paris of South America”; Buenos Aires’ European-style architecture and joie de vivre lend Argentina’s stylish capital an air of sophistication unique in the Western Hemisphere. Witness (and participate in!) the much-revered spectacle that is the tango. In Peru, tour Lima’s historical center (a UNESCO World Heritage site), then fly to Cuzco and descend into the Sacred Valley of the Incas to meet locals and visit Ollantayambo, the only Inca settlement continually inhabited since its inception. The next stop alone is worth the journey to South America — Machu Picchu! By Book this vacation & choose 1 gift below. train, ascend to the “Lost City of the Incas” for a magical moment in time and nature.

Portugal & its Islands Right now, Portugal is hot! And getting hotter! Not necessarily temperature-wise; it’s fast becoming the last “undiscovered” destination in Western Europe. Why? Those who have discovered its considerable assets are having a hard time keeping it to themselves! Those assets include Portugal’s impressive history; once a world superpower, its seafarers explored and charted much of the Old and New Worlds. Then there’s the endless variety of things to see and do, all within a manageable area (about the size of Maine). Throw in a lively, cosmopolitan capital and charmingly sleepy villages...as well as world-renowned wines and succulent seafood & sausages. Add sun, sand and surf. And top it all off with the Azores and Madeira — island gems in the Atlantic! In Lisbon, explore the Moorish Alfama Quarter, Jeronimo’s Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Monument to the Discoveries and the ©STEVANZZ/FOTOLIA.COM Tower of Belem (UWHS). See Sintra (UWHS), summer residence of kings for 6 centuries. Then enjoy Portugal’s “Riviera” and dinner accompanied by wine and fado, soulful music recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. On the Silver Coast, see sleepy villages, rich vineyards and age-old castles. At Fatima, see the famous Basilica and view the magnificent Batalha Monastery (UWHS). The truly remote Azores archipelago lies some 900 miles west of Lisbon. Its volcanic birth created mountains and valleys richly covered with varied vegetation, pocket lakes resting in ancient craters, hot springs, fumaroles and thermal fountains. Seaside villages, white-washed houses guarded by medieval city walls, bustling harbors and cities overflowing with architectural treasures — these, and Europe’s Book this vacation & choose 1 gift below. only pineapple and tea plantations, make the Azores all the more inviting. The Big Chill — How you can prevent frozen pipes What should you do when a water pipe freezes?

I

magine waking up on a frigid morning, and stumbling down the stairs only to find your kitchen is filled with water. Each winter, about a quarter of a million families find themselves with water pipes that have frozen and burst. A single three millimeter crack in a pipe can dump up to 250 gallons of water in your house in a single day causing thousands of dollars of damage. Whether your home has steel, copper or plastic PVC pipes, no one is immune. Fortunately, there a few precautions you can take to protect your pipes: Bundle up those pipes: Take time to insulate all the exposed pipes in your crawl spaces, garage and attic. These pipes are more vulnerable to freezing. Use heat tape or thermostaticallycontrolled heat cable to wrap high-risk pipes. Use exterior tape for outside pipes and interior tape for indoor pipes. Seal the cracks: Look for air leaks near your pipes. If arctic air seeps through even a tiny crack, your pipes can quickly freeze and burst. Seal up every leak with caulk or insulation. Put the garden hose away: Disconnect your garden hose and shut off the indoor valve before winter. Bump up the thermostat: The temperature inside the walls and attic is much colder than the inside of your house. If you let the indoor temperature drop below 65 degrees, your exterior

FROZEN OUT— About a quarter million families deal with frozen water pipes that burst each winter. wall pipes are at high risk of freezing. Protect your home when you’re gone: If you’re going out of town, ask a friend or neighbor to check your house each day. Ask them to make sure it’s warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing and look for any signs of water. Consider shutting off and draining your water system before you leave. Know the signs of a pipe freeze: If you turn on your faucet and no water comes out, your pipe is probably frozen.

You may be able to thaw the pipe yourself with a hair dryer. Start warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest part of the pipe. Never try to thaw pipe with a torch or open flame. Deal with the burst pipe: If your pipes burst, turn off your water at the main shut-off valve and leave the water faucets on. Call a plumber right away. You should also call your insurance agent or company as soon as possi-

ble. Although your insurance adjuster doesn’t need to see the spill before you clean it up, you should at least inform them of your situation. Move electronics, furniture, carpet and other items away from the water. Start mopping up the water and try to make temporary repairs to protect your home from further damage. Be sure to save all of your receipts for any money you spend related to the pipe burst. Your insurance company may be able to reimburse you for temporary repairs. Try to avoid making expensive permanent repairs until your insurance adjuster has a chance to assess the damage. Obviously, no one wants to deal with the cost and aggravation of a pipe burst. Take the proper measures to protect your pipes and your home. It’s also important to ensure your family is prepared to act swiftly and smartly if a pipe does rupture.

Taking the bite out of winter driving Preparation the key to staying safe on the road

W

inter driving can be hazardous for even the most experienced drivers, especially if their vehicles are not properly prepared for the challenging conditions winter often brings. Maintaining the safety and reliability of your vehicle should be a top priority during the winter months. Start the season off right by winterizing your vehicle before taking to the road. Here are some helpful tips to help you arrive safely to your destination: Drive cautiously — Match your driv-

ing speed to the current conditions. If conditions are challenging due to a slippery road surface or reduced visibility, decrease your speed. A slower driving speed allows for more reaction time and margin of error. Traction is key — Winter weather is not the time to ignore your tires. For optimum traction to navigate harsh winter conditions with confidence, consider installing a set of winter tires on your vehicle. Winter tires like Goodyear’s Ultra Grip Ice WRT feature a specialized ice

tread compound that offers enhanced traction on ice and snow-covered roads and maintains its flexibility in cold weather. This helps the tire to adapt to the road surface and reallly dig into snow and ice. Inflation is essential — Tire pressure decreases by about one pound per square inch for every 10-degree drop in outside air temperature, so it is vital that drivers check the air pressure regularly during the winter months. Proper tire inflation is essential for vehicle stability, fuel efficiency, optimum steering, grip, wear and load-carrying capabilities. Air pressure should be checked when the tires are cool, meaning they have not been driven even a mile. Service your vehicle — Be prepared for what Mother Nature throws your way by making sure you have enough antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid. For a correct amount of antifreeze to withstand the winter temperatures, a 50/50 mix of antifreeze to water is sufficient. You can go through all your windshield wiper fluid in one storm, so be sure to completely fill your vehicle’s reservoir before the first snowfall hits. It may be useful to buy extra, but make sure it is high-quality, “no-freeze” fluid. Practice makes perfect — It’s important to be alert when driving on snowcovered roadways because slush, ice and other hazards make it difficult to

change lanes and handle your vehicle. In order to know how your vehicle performs in the winter weather, it may be helpful to practice driving techniques in an empty, open parking lot. Refer to your owner’s manual to fully understand your vehicle’s braking and traction control systems. Stock your vehicle — No one wants to break down, especially in cold weather, so keeping a kit with essential items is helpful in case of emergencies. Some essential items to include are blankets, water bottles, a first aid kit, jumper cables, shovel/ice scraper, road flares, a candle and matches.

SLIDE RULE — Winter tires are able to stop up to 50 percent faster on ice and snow. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Batteries now included on all new i3 electric car BMW kickstarts a new era of urban mobility

I

t’s a brave new world of electro mobility. Designed to incorporate groundbreaking technologies and innovative materials, the battery powered BMW i3 is the first product to emerge from BMW’s new i sub-brand. Previously known as the “megacity vehicle,” the i3 is the first purposebuilt electric vehicle built primarily from carbon fiber reinforced polymer — a material as strong as steel, yet 50% lighter. Traditional BMW styling cues include a vestigial version of the iconic kidney shaped grille, although i3’s offkilter curves make it seem more like the Pontiac Aztec that might have been. BMW says designing an all-electric drive vehicle from the ground up offers numerous advantages over “conversion” vehicles, where the internal combustion engine is simply swapped for an electric motor. Space set aside for things like a fuel tank or exhaust system typically gets wasted, but the BMW i3 makes no such compromises. Well almost no compromises, since BMW has hedged its bet somewhat by offering an optional 34 horsepower 650cc gasoline powered “Range Extender” borrowed from a BMW motorcycle. When the battery gets to a certain level, the Range Extender kicks in and maintains the battery’s current state of charge. While this may sound suspiciously like a plug-in hybrid, the Range Extender never directly drives the i3’s

Coach style doors and front and rear bench seats allow for easy entry and exit giving the driver the ability to exit from either side of the vehicle, a maneuver BMW calls the “Slide Through Experience.” BMW’s first electric model may also have the auto industry’s most unusual option — a backup car. Buyers suffering from range anxiety can book a fullsized X5 SUV for a few weeks a year to use on longer road trips.

FUTURE SHOCK — The i3’s polarizing exterior is built primarily from carbon fiber reinforced polymer. wheels. BMW expects most customers will opt for the Range Extender, which roughly doubles the vehicle’s 80 to 100 mile range. It will also extend the $41,350 sticker price by about $3,650. BMW’s near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, and precise electric power steering help to make the i3 as satisfying to drive as any BMW. The hybrid synchronous electric motor generates 170 hp, taking it from 0-60mph in about 7.2 seconds, but drivers may have to get used to an accelerator pedal
