Seniors need to safeguard their assets from fraudsters Steps you can take to protect your nest egg

or many Americans, it’s hard to eke out a living and secure a nest egg for retirement. Fortunately, there are plenty of financial experts offering advice on how to save for the “golden years.” But that’s definitely not the case when it comes to skilled professionals with solutions on how to safeguard your life savings from identity theft. If you are retired or are close to retirement, protecting your nest egg from identity thieves is more vital today than ever, as is becoming aware of the different scams fraudsters use to separate you from your money. Here are some steps to preserve your investments: If you get a call from someone you don’t know to donate funds to a surefire investment opportunity, hang up the phone. A legitimate financial institution won’t just call you out of the blue with a windfall opportunity. Find a secure place to store Social Security numbers and medical information. Carry only necessary information in your wallet. If you get checks in the mail, such as Social Security, arrange to have them deposited directly into your bank account. Identity thieves are known to watch seniors’ mailboxes. Love your family members, but be aware that the majority of identity theft against seniors can be attributed to friends, family members or caretakers. It’s sad, but true, that the people closest to you have the highest probability of

Credit reports and credit statements are often the first places evidence of fraud shows up. If you only look at your reports once a year for free, you may miss warning signs, and identity theft could go unchecked for months. A nice surprise — Life insurance may cost less than you think There are ways to make life insurance more affordable By Robin Jones hen Mike Richards found out that his wife, Linda, was having twins, he figured it was time to buy some life insurance. He wanted to ensure his family’s financial security and know that his mortgage and kids’ college tuition would be covered if something were to happen to him. And he understood that he had to jump on it. “I knew the longer I waited, the more expensive it would be,” he says. But his policy cost less than he expected. “I was really surprised it wasn’t higher,” he says. His experience is common. Yet many people don’t purchase life insurance because they worry about the cost. Worldwide research and consulting company LIMRA recently found that 85 percent of people who didn’t have life insurance chose not to buy it because they thought it’d be too expensive. Seventy-eight percent of those who already had some life insurance didn’t buy more for the same reason. But LIMRA also found that the average cost of a 20-year $250,000 term life insurance policy for a healthy 30-yearold was $400 per year. That’s about $33 per month, less than most 30-year-olds spend on one dinner out with friends. Here are a few ways to make life insurance even more affordable. Buy early — Age is probably the most important factor in determining cost. Youth is generally an advantage. For

So it’s best to buy coverage as soon as someone depends on your income, whether that’s a spouse or a child. The right term life policy might let you keep your premium low for up to 30 years. A permanent policy like whole life or universal life might go longer. Stay healthy — Health is generally the second most important thing insur-

Make your Grand Canyon vacation even grander There’s more than one side to this natural wonder

here’s a reason the Grand Canyon makes the ‘must-visit’ list of travelers’ around the world. This is nature’s own sculpture garden, created on a canvas as broad as eternity and continuously reshaped by the forces of water and wind. Although nothing is needed to enhance the canyon’s unparalleled views, there are plenty of things visitors can do to make the experience more memorable. Colorado River-rafting and helicopter tours are available near the South Rim, as well as a scenic ride aboard the Grand Canyon Railway. Making daily roundtrip runs between Williams, Ariz. and Grand Canyon Village, the journey covers 65-miles of classic western terrain, including high desert plains dotted by sage and rabbit brush and the world’s largest Ponderosa pine forest. Passengers board the train at historic Williams Depot, an attraction in itself complete with a vintage steam locomotive and caboose on display. The train pulls out of the station at roughly 9:30 a.m. and a daily Wild-West Shootout is staged at the depot prior to departure. They arrive within sight of the famed El Tovar Hotel, 200-yards from the edge of the South Rim just before noon. Most travelers opt to spend a few hours in the park before the return trip at 3:30 p.m. Few visitors venture below the rim,

from March 15 through Oct. 31. Located just 10-miles away as the crow flies from the South Rim, but more than 200-miles by road the North Rim offers a slower, more relaxed pace than the South Rim and the opportunity for quiet exploration. Travelers often choose to walk the short trail to Bright Angel Point for expansive views across the canyon. Grand Canyon West is where visitors can experience the SkyWalk, a cantilever-shaped glass walkway suspended more than 4,000-feet above the Colorado River on the very edge of the Grand Canyon’s West Rim. Located at Eagle Point, the Skywalk extends 70-feet from the canyon’s rim. Sky Walk is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation about 4.5-hours away from the South Rim.

Ohio is taking the high road to teen driver safety Changes include limits on driving times and passengers

New regulations for Ohio’s teen drivers aim to ensure younger drivers have the road experience necessary before taking on some of driving’s tougher challenges. Drivers younger than 18 will now be limited on the number of passengers in the car and hours they can drive. “The change in driving times and the passenger restrictions during the first 12 months of driving allows Ohio’s young motorists to gain more experience on the road, while reducing their risks,” said Karhlton Moore, Executive Director of the Office of Criminal Justice Services. “This will help them become safer drivers.” During the first 12 months after receiving a license, probationary drivers younger than 18 must follow these restrictions: • No driving between midnight and 6 a.m. (unless with a parent/guardian or with a valid work, church or school documentation) • No driving with more than one nonfamily member as a passenger • All passengers must buckle up • No cell phone use while driving According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, drivers between 16 and 20 were involved in nearly 57,000 acci-

Bad for the game, worse for your tires From footballs to tires, inflation’s important

ho would have thought that slightly flat footballs would spur a national debate? When the New England Patriots were accused of using underinflated footballs in the AFC Championship game last January, many fans we’re calling for a penalty. If anything good came out of “deflategate” it’s that it helped raise awareness of the impact of air pressure on performance. And that’s especially true for your tires. “It’s very important that people properly inflate their tires,” says Bob Abram, product planning manager for Yokohama Tire Corporation, “because they are the only part of a vehicle that actually touches the road. When kept at the right pressure, tires will grip the road better and save you money.” Correct tire pressure is actually specified by the manufacturer of the vehicle, not the tire maker. You can find the proper inflation levels on a placard on the inside of the car door, or in the owner’s manual. Tires that are underinflated by 8 pounds per-square-inch (psi) can reduce your fuel economy by as much as 2 percent. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, tires can lose about 1-2 psi each month under normal driving conditions. That’s

TOUCH DOWN — Tires are the only part of a vehicle that actually touches the road. why Abram strongly recommends taking five minutes each month to check your tire pressure. “It’s quick and easy, and if you do it regularly, you’ll extend the life of your tire and get better fuel economy.” Abram says you can’t tell a tire’s pressure is off by just looking. Use a reliable tire gauge and check the pressure when the tires are cold (at least four hours

after the vehicle has been driven). Same with driving on slightly underinflated tires. You probably wouldn’t feel a big difference, but they wouldn’t be nearly as effective. Checking your tires regularly will pay off, but Abram says there are many other ways you can maintain your tires for improved driving and fuel-cost savings. Here are a couple:

Rotating your tires will prevent uneven wear and promote a smoother ride. Because the weight distribution on your car or truck can vary, it’s best to rotate your tires. Drivers should rotate their tires in accordance with vehicle owner’s manual recommendations to ensure even treadwear and optimum tread life. Yokohama recommends their tires be rotated at 6,000 – 8,000 mile intervals. Tires that are balanced correctly will provide a smoother ride and help prevent improper wear. Check your tire alignment once a year. Misaligned tires create unnecessary tire wear and higher fuel consumption. Make sure the valve stems are protected by a cap to keep out dirt, water and foreign objects. Check your tread depth by placing a penny upside down into a tread groove. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tire’s tread has worn down to the legal limit and you need to buy new tires. FOR MORE INFORMATION

ver since there have been cars, there has been car trouble — flat tires, dead batteries, blown radiator hoses and more. In his 1976 book Why Not the Best, President Carter wrote: “One of the proudest moments of my life came

when I was given a white canvas belt and tin badge and sworn in as a School Boy Patrolman.” AAA School Safety Patrol Members take pride in protecting others. Over the years twelve have received the prestigious AAA National Lifesaving Award for saving the life of a fellow student while on duty. At the end of the school year all School Safety Patrol members are recognized for their dedication toward preserving lives and preventing injuries. As the 100th anniversary approaches, AAA and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety will continue to sponsor the program through the Charles M. Hayes Advancement Fund, whose namesake founded the program, to advance and develop safety patrol programs. “AAA values our long-standing sponsorship of the program,” notes AAA East Central Safety Advisor JJ Miller. “In addition to keeping children safe, it helps to build meaningful relationships in communities across the country. As an association that values community investment, the program embodies what AAA stands for.”
