aving too much of your personal information available online makes you vulnerable to cyber criminals who will target you for scams or identity theft. If you use social media, shop online or post a job resume, you likely have plenty of identifying information on the web that’s easily found. Your maiden name, city you were born in, first pet – all information that can be used to identify who you are – can sometimes be found with just a little searching through social media profiles and Google.

Unfortunately cyber-criminals piece these factors together resulting in online over-exposure. Think it hasn’t happened to you yet? Try searching your name and birth date on Google. You may be surprised by the results you find.

Here are some tips to protect your identity when using the Internet: • Regularly review the privacy terms and settings of every site you use: In only five to ten minutes, you can quickly familiarize yourself with this information and prevent hours of trouble later, should a cyber-crook get ahold of your personal information.

• Limit the amount of personal information available on social media sites: Be wary of “friend requests” from people you don’t know personally. Fight the urge to over-share on social media. Thieves could easily piece together information from your social sites to commit fraud and identity theft – including your name, high school and birthplace.

Americans Growing Less Concerned about Dangerous Driving Behaviors

Survey Results Come as Road Deaths Increase for First Time in Seven Years

A

mericans are less likely to perceive a serious threat from dangerous driving behaviors such as drunk, aggressive or drowsy driving, according to an analysis of four years of public surveys conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The decreased concern is accompanied by an estimated 5.3 percent increase in annual traffic fatalities, totaling more than 34,000 in 2012. This is the first annual increase in seven years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Motorists may be growing less concerned about potential safety risks behind the wheel. A ‘do as I say, not as I do’ attitude remains common with many motorists consistently admitting to engaging in the same dangerous behaviors for which they would condemn other drivers.

Survey results during the previous four years show decreasing concern for dangerous driving behaviors: • The number of people who believe driving after drinking is a serious threat declined from a near universal 90 percent in 2009 to 69 percent in 2012.

• The number of people who consider drowsy

driving a very serious threat declined from 71 percent in 2009 to 46 percent in 2012.

• The number of people who believe that texting or emailing while driving is a very serious threat declined from 87 percent in 2009 to 81 percent in 2012. The number of people who admit to texting while driving increased from 21 percent to 26 percent during the same period.

• The number of people who consider red-light running to be completely unacceptable declined from 77 percent in 2009 to 70 percent in 2012.

More than one-third (38 percent) admitted to running a red light within the previous month.

AAA believes that we have made great strides in recent years to reduce road deaths, but there are still too many needless fatalities caused by dangerous driving. It is clear that more must be done to address the dangers of drunk, aggressive and drowsy driving to stem this concerning trend.

Someone dies on America’s roadways every 15 minutes. Fatalities include drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and every other kind of road user. Car crashes affect young people disproportionately by killing more people aged 5-34 than any other cause of death. More than 2.3 million people annually also suffer serious injuries from crashes.

AAA Supports Ignition Interlocks and Warns of Drunk Driving Dangers

AAA

reminds drivers of the sobering fact that alcohol-related highway fatalities remain a leading problem on the nation’s roadways. The organization advocates for ignition interlock devices for first-time offenders to combat the dangers of drunk driving.

AAA is not alone in its concern about impaired driving or strong support for tough policies for convicted drunk drivers. According to the 2012 Traffic Safety Culture Index conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than nine in 10 drivers consider it a serious threat to their personal safety when others drink and drive, and nearly all (97 percent) surveyed find it unacceptable for a driver to get behind the wheel when they have had too much to drink. To prevent these dangers, nearly eight in 10 Americans support requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted DUI offenders, even if it’s their first conviction.

Research has identified ignition interlock devices (IIDs) as a proven way to save lives. AAA’s recommendation to require the use of IIDs for all convicted offenders is grounded in research, which shows that IIDs are more effective than other methods at reducing re-arrest among convicted drunk drivers and keeping impaired drivers off the road.

AAA is reaching out to motorists on the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) decision to support laws requiring IID use for all first-time DUI offenders­— one of several new recommendations issued to help curb alcohol-related traffic injury and death.

“I commend AAA for stepping up for safety,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman. Technologies such as ignition interlocks will reduce alcohol-related crashes on our nation’s roadways. We look forward to working alongside AAA and its clubs to eliminate the nation’s top killer on our roadways ­— impaired driving.”

ife insurance is one of the best sources of financial security for loved ones left behind after a death. One of the most important details of any life insurance policy is naming the beneficiary/beneficiaries for the policy. The beneficiary is the person(s) you wish to receive the proceeds from the policy upon your death. Believe it or not, there are some people that purchase their life insurance policy and neglect to select a beneficiary or never revisit the policy as life changes.

You can save your loved ones a lot of time, money, and trouble by carefully selecting a beneficiary for your life insurance policy and making sure that information is kept applicable to your present situation. when you first obtained your life insurance policy, then you might have established a guardian or trust. Once the children reach adulthood, it might make better sense to name them directly as beneficiaries. Another example would be if a beneficiary is now elderly or no longer mentally competent. In such cases, it might make better sense to name an alternative beneficiary and make the appropriate provisions in your will to care for the previous beneficiary.

Be Specific

Being vague in an attempt to avoid a hard decision, conflict, or the need to revisit the policy can result in confusion and legal challenges that can tie up the money or cause the omission of someone you wanted included. You want to be specific when naming a beneficiary. So, use the given name and not generic terms like child, parent, wife, or sibling.

Be Cautious

Some people name themselves or their estate as the beneficiary. This means that the life insurance benefit will go directly to their estate. However, naming yourself or your estate can leave the benefit subject to taxation and enable creditors to seize it for unpaid bills.

Remember, if you have any questions, concerns, or doubts about your beneficiary designation, then you can always consult your tax advisor or attorney.

Host a Holiday Party Your Friends will Love and Live to Tell About

y the time you finish reading this article three people will have been injured in a car crash related to drinking and driving. By the time your lunch hour is over, someone will have died in an alcohol-related driving accident.

The facts are sobering. As we are heading into the holiday season, AAA encourages everyone to approach the festivities with an awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving.

If you’re planning a get-together, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Be a friend first and a host second.

Don’t force alcoholic drinks on your guests. Make available a variety of nonalcoholic beverages and respect the wishes of those who say “no thanks.”

Set a good example. Don’t let yourself overindulge. Your guests are likely to follow your lead.

The best defense is a good offense.

Encourage car pooling and give a small gift to designated drivers. As soon as your guests arrive, identify who those designated drivers are—they’re certain to be an ally later on.

De-emphasize drinking as entertainment. Slow down your guests’ drinking rate by engaging them in conversation and asking them to

participate in fun activities that you’ve planned.

Serve food throughout the evening. Tempt your guests away from the bar with an attractive array of food.

High-protein items such as cheese and meats stay in the stomach longer and slow down the rate of intoxication. Rich, starchy foods such as mashed potatoes and beans are great, too.

Minimize salt. Salt makes people thirsty and speeds up intoxication. Serve dips and spreads with unsalted or lowsalt crackers or raw vegetables. Also, consider cold-cut trays, cheese fondues and cheese balls. Avoid using carbonated mixers as they tend to speed up the body’s absorption of alcohol. Stick to water or juices.

Put away the alcohol when the hour is late. Close the bar 90 minutes before the party is over and don’t encourage “one for the road.” Bring out coffee, food, and dessert. Only time will sober up someone who has had too much to drink. If things appear to be getting out of control, cut back on the amount of alcohol in the mixed drinks. If need be, hide the alcohol somewhere and claim that you’ve run out!

Never serve someone who is under the age of 21. Keep alcohol in one area so you can monitor it easily.

Take charge! Take keys, call a cab, or insist that a person who has had too much to drink to stay overnight. They will thank you in the morning.

Remember, only time will make your guests sober, not coffee and not cold showers. It takes about one hour to burn off an average drink. Five ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer and one-and-one-half ounces of liquor all contain about the same amount of alcohol. Keep a watch on behavior. Sleepy, too talkative, too giddy, and uncoordinated guests are under the influence.

For irate intoxicated guests, “hide” their car keys until they have found another ride home. You may feel as if you have lost a friend that night, but you will have an even better friend the next morning.

If you are a party guest, keep these following points in mind.

Accept a drink only when you really want one. If someone tries to force a drink on you, ask for a non-alcoholic beverage instead. If that doesn’t work, “lose” your drink by setting it down somewhere and leaving it.

Skip a drink now and then. Having a non-alcoholic drink between alcoholic ones will help keep your blood alcohol content level down, as does spacing out your alcoholic drinks.

Limit consumption of alcohol beverages to one drink (beer, wine or spirits) per hour.

The Big Freeze: How to Prevent Freezing Pipes Protect your ID I

magine waking up on a frigid winter morning, throwing on your bathrobe and stumbling down the stairs to make a pot of coffee—only to find your kitchen is filled with water. Each winter, about a quarter of a million families find themselves in scenarios like this all because of water pipes that freeze and burst.

Not only can a pipe eruption ruin your day, but it can also cause thousands of dollars of damage to your home. As a matter of fact, just a three millimeter crack in a pipe can dump up to 250 gallons of water in your house in a single day. Whether your home is outfitted with copper or plastic PVC pipes, no one is immune to pipe bursts.

Fortunately, you can take a few precautions to protect your pipes and avoid the hassle of a messy, expensive pipe burst. Follow these simple steps: Bundle up those pipes: Take time to insulate all the exposed pipes in your crawl spaces, garage and attic. Because these pipes are open to the elements, they are more vulnerable to freezing.

Use heat tape or thermostaticallycontrolled heat cables to wrap your highrisk pipes. Use exterior tape for outside pipes and interior tape for indoor pipes.

Carefully follow all the installation instructions.

Seal the cracks: Look for air leaks near your pipes. If arctic air seeps through even a tiny crack, your pipes can quickly freeze and burst. Seal up every leak with caulk or insulation.

Put the garden hose away: Before the temperature plummets below freezing, disconnect your garden hose and shut off the indoor valve.

Bump up the thermostat: Never set your thermostat below 65 degrees in the winter. The temperature inside the walls and attic is much colder than the inside of your house. If you let the indoor temperature drop below 65 degrees, your exterior wall pipes are at high risk of freezing and bursting.

Protect your home when you’re gone: If you’re going out of town, ask a friend or neighbor to check your house each day. Tell them to look for any signs of a burst pipe and make sure it’s warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing. If you don’t have anyone who can check your home, consider shutting off and draining your water system before you leave.

Know the signs of a pipe freeze: If you turn on your faucet and no water comes out, this could be a sign that your pipe is frozen. You may be able to thaw the frozen pipe yourself with a hair dryer.

Start warming the pipe as close to the

faucet as possible, working toward the coldest part of the pipe. Never try to thaw pipe with a torch or open flame.

Deal with the pipe burst: If your pipes freeze and burst, turn off your water at the main shut-off valve and leave the water faucets on. Call a plumber right away.

You should also call your insurance agent or company as soon as possible.

Although your insurance adjuster doesn’t need to see the spill before you clean it up, you should at least inform them of your situation.

Move electronics, furniture, carpet and other items away from the water.

Start mopping up the water and try to make temporary repairs to protect your home from further damage. Be sure to save all of your receipts for any money you spend related to the pipe burst. Kruger National Park

Valley is the food and wine heartland of the country, where splendid wines are grown and top chefs create international cuisine.

Kruger National Park

Only a 2.5 hour flight from Cape Town, visitors to the area don’t want to miss the world-renowned Kruger National Park, which offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Man’s interaction with the Lowveld environment over many centuries— from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela—is very evident in the Kruger National Park.

These treasures represent the cultures, persons and events that played a role in the history of the Kruger National Park and are conserved along with the park’s natural assets. The Big Five is the term used to describe the most popular and exciting animals to view while on safari in the Kruger National Park, and there are great opportunities to see them at this beautiful reserve.

Pilanesberg National Park

The Pilanesberg National Park ranks among one of the largest national parks in southern Africa, covering an area of 136,000 acres. Pilanesberg is one of the few Big Five destinations that are malariafree, making it an excellent choice for families with children, older travelers, or women who are pregnant. This unique area is encircled by four rings of hills, a geologically fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic action some 1,200 million years ago. The scenic beauty of Pilanesberg is reflected in a large central

lake. Through time, wind and water have carved a spectacular landscape with rocky outcrops, open plains, wooded valleys and dense bush. Pilanesberg exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as "Bushveld."

Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone. Springbok, brown hyena, the red-eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually found in arid areas are found co-habitating with moist-area-limited impala, black-eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees. The colorful hues, varied habitats and panoramas will delight and entertain photographers and all but the most unobservant visitor. Since late 1979, thanks to Operation Genesis - the largest game translocation ever undertaken at the time, tourists have been able to take note of nature's alphabet - from aardvark to zebra. The park boasts healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant and buffalo Africa's "Big Five". A wide variety of rare and common species exist with endemic species like the nocturnal brown hyena, the fleet-footed cheetah, the majestic sable, as well as giraffe, zebra, hippo and crocodile, to mention but a few.

Bird-watching is excellent with over 300 species recorded. Near the Manyane Gate in the eastern section of the park, there is an outstanding walk-in aviary for close encounters of the feathered kind.

The park has over 62 miles of wellsurfaced roads, much patronized by visitors from the next-door Sun City resort complex and its satellite hotels.

Picnic sites, viewing hides and selfguided wilderness trails are among the established facilities. The viewing is probably at its most rewarding along the valleys. You will have the opportunity to spot lion, elephant, giraffe, rhino, leopard, hippo, wildebeest, warthog, hyena, and the elusive cheetah - to name just a few!

One of the most spectacular sights in Southern Africa is Victoria Falls, located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Although not close to Cape Town, many visitors feel this extra excursion is well worth the time to see one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Statistically speaking, it is the largest waterfall in the world. This recognition comes from combining the height and width together to create the largest single sheet of flowing water. Whether viewed by helicopter or from the various trails, the splendor of Victoria Falls will take your breath away.

If you care to, you can prepare some of your meals and eat in your own dining area (or on the lanai, which most condos have). It’s a great way to economize. Forget about searching for a restaurant, making reservations, getting there, parking and tipping. Be as casual or as formal as you like. Make and serve only the foods you love. Linger around the table for as long as you like. Eat whenever you wish (24-hour access!).

Even if you don’t cook, use the refrigerator for store-bought foods and the microwave or oven for restaurant leftovers. Condo kitchens save you time and money.

Mazda5 Mirroring a compact wagon rather than a true crossover, the Mazda5 packs a great deal of practicality into a small footprint. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is not the most powerful and that can be apparent in hilly terrain or when carrying a heavy load but, it is surprisingly economical and its around town performance is more than adequate.

Honda Odyssey The Odyssey is roomy, rides comfortably, features supportive seats and has a first-class drivetrain. Child entertainment options include an optional built-in DVD system. Handling is good and maneuvering this relatively large minivan in tight parking lots is easier than one might imagine. Chrysler Town & Country This minivan offers a quiet and composed ride and a smooth and powerful V-6 engine. It stands out for its interior flexibility. The “Stow-n-Go” package allows quick and easy conversion from passenger to cargo hauling duties as both second and third row seats stow easily into wells located in the floor. When the seats are raised and in use, those wells provide additional storage. Unfortunately, these folding seats fall short on comfort. Please take a few minutes to acquaint yourself with AAA East Central’s Emergency Road Service Handbook.

AAA’s Emergency Road Service (ERS) brings you the ultimate in travel protection. It’s with you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. No matter where you go, AAA comes to your rescue in the event of all kinds of unexpected car trouble.

For Emergency Road Service telephone numbers in your local area, please refer to your membership card.

For Emergency Road Service outside the AAA East Central, East Penn Region service area call 1-800-AAA-HELP (1-800-222-4357); you will be connected to the nearest AAA dispatch center.

Emergency Road Service is designed to assist you in an emergency when your vehicle cannot proceed under its own power; your membership covers the emergency services listed below. AAA service is provided only for the member whose name appears on a current, paid-up service membership card. This service is not available to any non-member driving the member’s car even though the nonmember may reside in the same household. If protection is desired for the other eligible drivers in your family, an associate membership must be obtained. AAA MEMBERSHIP COVERS THE MEMBER – NOT THE AUTOMOBILE. ELIGIBLE VEHICLES Service applies to all properly licensed fourwheeled motor driven vehicles of the passenger, pleasure, or recreational type (vans, campers, and motor homes), if those services can be safely delivered.

Dual wheel campers/motor homes are eligible for all services except towing, extrication/winching and tire service. Dual wheel unloaded pickup trucks are eligible for all services except tire service. Rented passenger vehicles are also eligible for services.

Commercial vehicles are eligible for service with the exclusion of taxi cabs and limousines.

EMERGENCY AND ACCIDENT TOWING SERVICE When your vehicle cannot be driven after attempting the services below, or when it cannot be placed in a safe driving condition, you may have it towed to the facility answering the call at no additional charge. If you choose to have your vehicle towed to any location other than the responding facility, it will be towed with the first three (3) miles provided AT NO CHARGE. Charges for towing beyond three (3) miles shall be paid to the serviceman by the member.

If your vehicle becomes disabled while towing a light duty trailer, service will be provided for the trailer (fifth wheel trailers, horse trailers and utility trailers are excluded). You may be required to pay for trailer towing.

EMERGENCY FUEL DELIVERY SERVICE Even if you run out of gas you’re covered. AAA will deliver a sufficient amount of fuel to reach the nearest service station. However, specific brands, or octane ratings cannot be promised, nor can availability. You will be charged for the gasoline at current pump prices.

LOCK OUT SERVICE If the vehicle key is lost, broken, or the service provider cannot gain entry, the Club shall provide locksmith service up to $50 or reimbursement of commercial locksmith service up to $50. If necessary, the Club will also provide tow service.

EXTRICATION/WINCHING SERVICE If a vehicle is stuck in a ditch or mud, it will be freed provided it can be safely reached by the service vehicle. If extrication requires the use of special equipment, or more than one truck or additional manpower, it is the member’s responsibility to absorb a portion of these charges.

Service applies only to vehicles disabled in an area specifically designed for public travel. Service cannot be provided when a member has intentionally driven into vacant lots, beaches, short cuts, open fields, barricaded streets, roads or areas under construction.

WEATHER CONDITIONS Service will not be rendered to snowbound cars. Digging or towing a car out of a snow bank or rendering service to cars on unplowed streets or driveways is not an emergency road service function.

Service will be provided only when driveways, streets or highways are reasonably free of snow in the estimation of the serviceman. Servicemen will not remove snow. During any weather emergency, preferential service must be given to cars that have become disabled on highways. Emergency service does not provide installation or removal of snow tires or chains.

TIRE SERVICE If your vehicle’s spare is inflated and serviceable, it will be installed to replace a flat tire. If no inflated spare is available, the vehicle will be towed in accordance with the towing provision.

EMERGENCY MECHANICAL FIRST AID Any time a AAA facility responds to your call, they will first attempt minor mechanical adjustments to make your car operable. If their efforts do not get your car mobile again, towing services will be provided in accordance with the Club’s towing provision.

BATTERY SERVICE A battery boost will be provided in an attempt to start your vehicle. A new battery can be provided for purchase if a test shows it’s needed. (Battery delivery is available in most areas of the AAA East Central, East Penn region.)

TURNPIKES AND TOLL ROADS Certain toll road authorities will not provide AAA service trucks access to service AAA members on their highways. Members should submit their itemized receipts to the Club for reimbursement and are entitled to be reimbursed for towing up to three (3) miles or to the nearest exit, or to the responding turnpike garage. (See Reimbursement Service.)

Continued patterns of excessive use may result in a change of coverage type or the cancellation of future membership services.

These emergency services are provided to put your vehicle in a drivable condition. If these attempts are unsuccessful after a reasonable effort by the serviceman, the towing service provision will apply.

ERS is available to you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada.

We select Emergency Road Service (ERS) facilities for their ability to handle service calls, but we cannot guarantee that these facilities have parts or equipment to make repairs. ERS facilities are independent businesses and are not employees or agents of this Club, AAA or its affiliates. Responsibility for loss, damage or unsatisfactory workmanship remains with the facility providing the service. AAA will attempt to resolve disputes or damage complaints within 10 days of the incident and AAA cannot promise resolution if repairs are completed prior to investigation.

During severe weather conditions, civil disturbances or national emergencies, AAA reserves the right to temporarily suspend service to members.

Keep Insurance Information Current Inaccurate Information Could Result in Registration Suspension

ennDOT and the state Insurance Department urge motorists to contact PennDOT if they change their vehicle insurance provider, as vehicle owners – not insurance providers – are responsible for reporting new policy information to the department.

People may assume that when they start a new vehicle insurance policy, the new company notifies PennDOT that they’re covered. That is not the case.

Customers are urged to provide updated insurance information to PennDOT when requested to avoid any penalties, such as registration suspension.”

Drivers must purchase auto insurance – or maintain “financial responsibility” – in order to legally drive in Pennsylvania. Consumers need to remember that if you fail to renew your policy, or if your policy is canceled, you could face fines, penalties and driving restrictions.

When PennDOT receives notification

from an insurance company that an individual’s insurance has been cancelled, PennDOT sends a letter to the individual requesting verification that a new insurance policy is in place.

By law, if an individual does not respond to the letter providing current insurance information, PennDOT is required to administer a three-month vehicleregistration suspension.

If a suspension occurs, the vehicle owner must surrender the vehicle’s registration plate to PennDOT in order to begin the suspension. The owner will be required to provide current proof of insurance to the department and pay a $50 fee in order to have the vehicle registration restored once the suspension has been served.
