Protect Your ID From Online Overexposure

aving too much of your personal information available online makes you vulnerable to cyber criminals who will target you for scams or identity theft. If you use social media, shop online or post a job resume, you likely have plenty of identifying information on the web that’s easily found. Your maiden name, city you were born in, first pet – all information that can be used to identify who you are – can sometimes be found with just a little searching through social media profiles and Google. Unfortunately cyber-criminals piece these factors together resulting in online over-exposure. Think it hasn’t happened to you yet? Try searching your name and birth date on Google. You may be surprised by the results you find. Here are some tips to protect your identity when using the Internet: • Regularly review the privacy terms and settings of every site you use: In only five to ten minutes, you can quickly familiarize yourself with this information and prevent hours of trouble later, should a cyber-crook get ahold of your personal information. • Limit the amount of personal information available on social media sites: Be wary of “friend requests” from people you don’t know personally. Fight the urge to over-share on social media. Thieves could easily piece together information from your social sites to commit fraud and identity theft – including your name, high school and birthplace. Continued on page 6

Thanksgiving Holiday Hours Closed Nov. 28 and Nov. 29 (all stores will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)
