Travel insurance protects your travel investment The perfect companion for your perfect vacation

hether your idea of a spring break is sipping a cocktail by the pool, skiing a double black diamond, or touring the capitals of Europe, travel insurance can provide valuable assistance and financial protection. “Emergencies are rare, but everyone should have a backup plan,” notes Jim Lehman, president AAA East Central. “Unexpected illnesses and medical emergencies are the number one reason trips are canceled. A good travel insurance plan will cover you for virtually every contingency — from travel delays due to bad weather, or a missed connection — to lost luggage, or a medical emergency in a foreign country.” TripAssist Family Care Plan, AAA’s newest travel insurance product, covers more of the unexpected for less. It includes valuable features like comprehensive trip cancellation and primary emergency medical coverage, and 24-hour travel assistance. As any parent can tell you, children always seem to become ill at the worst possible moment. With TripAssist Family Care there’s no additional charge for children up to age 17 when traveling with parents or grandparents, and no surprise processing fees! “TripAssist Family Care makes travel insurance premiums more affordable, particularly for families with young children,” notes Ruth Nagy, AAA East Central Managing Director of Travel Services. “It’s our most popular plan for

Baggage loss and damage coverage is $1,000 — double that of comparable packages. Baggage delay coverage has been increased to $300, a 50 percent improvement over previous plans. TripAssist Family Care also provides expanded trip cancellation and interruption coverage. It protects your travel investment if your trip is delayed or canceled for a covered reason, such as a major injury, jury duty or other unfore-
seen circumstances. Recent additions to this plan include reimbursement of Frequent Flyer miles and associated airline fees, and vehicle return coverage if your road trip is interrupted. Medical treatment on your domestic or overseas vacation may leave you with expensive out-of-pocket expenses. TripAssist Family Care includes $25,000 in primary medical coverage for emergency medical costs during your travels. There’s no need to file claims with your regular health insurer first. Emergency medical evacuation can be a lifesaver when traveling to a destination where health care is not up to U.S. standards. TripAssist Family Care will reimburse you for transportation costs to the medical facility and back home, up to $500,000. Several add-ons are available to help you customize your coverage. TripAssist Family Care Trip+ offers double the limits for select benefits, including missed connection coverage, travel delay, emergency medical coverage and transportation, and baggage loss/damage or delay. The Required to Work option provides trip cancellation and interruption coverage when your travel plans change due to work related issues. Travelers can also add Cancel Anytime coverage to their TripAssist Family Care plan. As the name implies, Cancel Anytime reimburses you no matter why your plans change, up to an hour before your scheduled departure. This option offers greater flexibility than a traditional trip cancellation policy. It’s a great choice for anyone whose travel plans may change for a variety of reasons not covered by most trip cancellation plans.

inter vacation season is in full swing, and travelers are busy shopping for rental cars for their sun and snow destinations. One of the benefits of AAA membership is the special package of savings available when you rent from Hertz. Members receive up to a 20 percent discount on car rentals, free Hertz Gold Plus Rewards membership, plus an array of money-saving opportunities, including special upgrades, dollars-off coupons, and more. Their Member Satisfaction Guarantee is your assurance that the rate and car class, or a higher car class, will be available as reserved. The key to these savings and benefits is the CDP#215, the same number as your club code (215), printed on the front of your membership card. It’s your gateway to savings and value. The Hertz system will automatically assign the best rate available within the chosen channel of distribution at the time of reservation.
Exclusive AAA member benefits include free unlimited mileage on most rentals. Families receive free use of one child, infant or booster seat with every rental, and there’s no charge for an additional driver if that driver is a AAA member and meets standard rental qualifications. Hertz frequently offers AAA members special single and double upgrade coupons in addition to dollars off coupons. These offers are available from AAA travel offices, in your club publication and on AAA.com. While most leisure and/or promotional weekly rates require that a car be rented over Saturday night, AAA members qualify for low weekly rates without having to keep the vehicle over a Saturday night. Plus, you get 10 percent off Hertz’s per-gallon price when you purchase the prepaid fuel option. Hertz Gold Plus Rewards membership is free to AAA members. But that’s not all. Basic and Plus members receive 675 Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

How much is enough life insurance? Steps to figuring out your life insurance needs By Robin Jones
J
ohn and Sallie Smith, ages 38 and 36, have a mortgage on their home and have two children: Johnny, 4, and Karen, an infant. Both parents work outside the home, and both want the surviving spouse to be able to maintain the family’s current standard of living and continue to contribute toward important family goals (like sending the kids to college) if one of them should die unexpectedly. The Smiths, a hypothetical family, are perfect candidates for a life insurance needs analysis, which some insurance providers, including the Auto Club, conduct for no charge. John and Sallie already have some life insurance, but because they now have two kids, they WE’RE NOT SATISFIED UNTIL YOU ARE TOTALLY SATISFIED

don’t think they have enough. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but nearly everyone with dependents needs a life insurance policy. If a family plans for their long-term needs when they first purchase a policy, they can feel secure knowing they’ll have enough coverage if tragedy strikes. A complete analysis of your life insurance needs will help determine if you have enough coverage to protect your family. Below, we look at the Smiths’ situation to give you an overview of what’s involved.

so the Smiths set aside about $15,000 each for John and Sallie. Education Funding: The Smiths provide enough in their individual policies for each child to attend a four-year university—approximately $151,000. Debt Repayment: The Smiths owe $250,000 on their mortgage and have $45,000 in other debt, including student loans, car loans, and credit card debt, so they include $295,000 in each of their policies for debt repayment. The money doesn’t have to be used for that purpose, but the funds would enable the survivor to pay off the debt and remain in their home instead of possibly being forced to sell. Ongoing Income Needs: John’s current annual salary is $80,000, and Sallie’s is $45,000—that’s $125,000 combined. If either died before retirement, the surviving spouse would probably need to replace most of the lost income. If John were to die first, the family would need 70 percent of John’s after-tax earnings over his expected lifetime, or about $1.25 million (which includes a 2.5 percent annual increase to offset inflation).
Using the same assumptions, the family would need $355,000 to cover Sallie’s income. Cash Sources and Income Sources Before their needs were analyzed, the Smiths had a $200,000 life insurance policy for John and a $100,000 policy for Sallie. Other income sources would include Social Security benefits, money they’ve set aside for retirement, and a small amount of savings. The surviving spouse would continue to work outside the home. The Conclusion After adding up their immediate cash needs, education funding, debts, and ongoing income needs, then subtracting their existing life insurance, the Smiths decide to add $1.5 million to John’s existing life insurance policy and $716,000 to Sallie’s to secure their family’s financial future and give them peace of mind. Pennsylvania auto thefts down dramatically
T
he National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recently released a historic look at vehicle theft in Pennsylvania. From its peak auto theft year in 1990 when 60,062 vehicles were stolen, Pennsylvania has experienced a significant decline ending 2013 with 13,770 thefts. That’s a reduction of 77 percent since 1990. From 1990 through 2013, vehicle thefts have been on a dramatic downward trend. Pennsylvania actually reported 84 fewer thefts in 2013 than it did in 1960. Like other states, Pennsylvania authorities employed some innovative law enforcement programs; among them the use of bait cars and license plate readers. In short, technology has had a huge positive impact. Not only is law enforcement exploiting technology, but auto manufacturers have been outfitting vehicles with more and more theft prevention products—from smart keys to immobilizers to tracking systems. So vehicles today are much harder to steal and that is good news for everyone who owns a vehicle. Even though auto theft is affecting fewer people these days, if you are one of its unfortunate victims, it can be a real hassle recovering from the loss. Most experts recommend a
layered approach – combining both passive and active devices to thwart even the most ambitious thieves. Common Sense: Avoid parking in isolated or dimly lit areas. Lock your car and take your keys. It’s simple enough but many thefts occur because owners make it easy for thieves to steal their cars. The vast majority of vehicle thefts occur while the doors are unlocked. About 20 percent of vehicles stolen have the keys in the ignition. Never leave your car running unattended. Locking your car when parked inside a garage provides an extra layer of protection. Warning Device: Most thieves will avoid vehicles with anti-theft devices. Having and using a visible or audible warning device is another item that can ensure that your car remains where you left it. Immobilizing Device: Generally speaking, if your vehicle can’t be started, it can’t be stolen. “Kill” switches, fuel cut-offs and smart keys are among the devices, which are extremely effective. Tracking Device: These systems combine GPS and wireless technologies to allow remote monitoring. If the vehicle is moved, the system will alert the owner and it can be tracked via computer. Some will even slow the vehicle down.

Traveling on a fully packaged tour from a Premier Plus Basic well-respected AAA Savings per room (double occupancy) on new air-exclusive bookings (minimum $3,500/room) with deposit by 2/28/15 Travel partner may save you as much as 40% of what you’d pay if you invested the time and energy to plan, reserve and purchase the exact same vacation experience on your own. Save up to $200.00 per room when you book and deposit on a 2015 Europe escorted tour (valued at $3,500 or more per room) from a selection of AAA Travel partners by Feb 28, 2015. Because many escorted tours sell out months before their departure dates, it’s always advisable to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Booking early enables you to take advantage of the best availability in tours, accommodations and transportation options; the longer you wait, the greater the chance that the hotels, flights or excursions you really want won’t be available. But the best reason to book early is to save money. The farther away from the departure date, the less you pay. With some travel partners, you can save up to 10% off the land-only portion of select tours by booking and paying in full in advance. So pay early and save more. Choose now from hundreds, if not thousands, of exciting European tour packages from AAA Member Choice Vacations,® Alexander+Roberts, Insight Vacations and Trafalgar. From additional savings to vouchers valid toward optional tours and excursions, AAA members are entitled to exclusive benefits on select packages (ask a AAA Travel Agent for details). Also, some AAA partners offer frequenttravel programs for those who’ve toured with them in the recent past; travel with that same partner again and get additional savings on the land-only portion of select itineraries. What are the benefits of an escorted tour? No need to worry about language, finding your hotel or missing a train. No need to rent a car, to drive yourself along unfamiliar terrain, to decipher maps instead of appreciating the passing scenery. Professional guides provide history and cultural context as well as a personal touch that you’d never experience on your own. All in all, you’re free to enjoy because the hassles have all been taken care of for you. And most tour operators have spent years developing a perfect balance between organized activities and the freedom to spend time on your own. So save yourself valuable time & money and get the most out of your hard-earned vacation. You may even develop new friendships among your fellow travelers — all the more reason not to go it alone!

Start your rail journey with Mississippi River views and glimpses of the Twin Cities skyline. Awaken in your private sleeping accommodations to cross North Dakota’s plains and traverse Gassman Coulee Trestle. Enjoy breakfast and lunch onboard as you cross into Montana to Glacier National Park. This vast ice-carved terrain of serrated ridges, jutting peaks (6 more than 10,000 feet high), waterfalls, hanging valleys, 50 glaciers, dense forests and more than 200 lakes is one of the world’s most pristine natural environments. Designated a national park (the 10th) in 1910 by President Taft, the park covers some 1.2 million acres. Deer are among the most commonly spotted wildlife, but elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, wolves and bears are seen. Tour in a 1930s “jammer” with a canvas roll-top; rebuilt in 2001, these vehicles ply the park’s primary route — Goingto-the-Sun Road. Cross the border into Canada to visit Alberta’s Waterton Lakes National Park, site of the Canadian Rockies’ deepest lakes. The park is part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a World Heritage Site. Enjoy 2 nights at Glacier Park Lodge, built by the Great Northern Railway. The lobby’s massive fireplace invites fireside chats, and there’s an outdoor pool, a golf course, a pitchn-putt and a day spa on site. Your other in-park home for 2 nights is the Swiss-themed Many Glacier Hotel on Swiftcurrent Lake. Its balcony offers 180º views of the lake, 3 glaciers and serrated peaks. Celebrity’s biggest stars are aligned on Europe Five Solstice-class ships will cruise the Continent in 2015
T
here’s an old adage that you should “go big or go home.” In 2015 Celebrity Cruises is going very big in Europe with more ways to experience the Continent than ever before. Celebrity will offer 19 distinct Mediterranean itineraries aboard five ships, visiting 94 ports in 28 countries, with more than 65 enticing overnight stays. Ships include Celebrity Reflection, their newest and most advanced vessel. Celebrity’s impeccable design taste is readily apparent in the elegant public rooms filled with contemporary artwork, while the Alcoves is a cool, cabana-style retreat. Staterooms are generous with 85 percent of the 1,498 cabins incorporating private verandahs. Amenities include smarter storage and closet space, spacious bathrooms, and plush European bedding. The Lawn Club is a unique top-deck environment with just over a half-acre off real growing grass and a Hamptonsesque vibe. There are ten memorable dining venues, including Qsine a “uniquely unordinary” interactive bistro with menus delivered on an iPad. Reflection will be retracing the voyage of Odysseus on a series of 10- and 11-night Eastern Mediterranean sailings roundtrip from Rome to the Greek Isles and Turkey. The 10-night itinerary calls in at Messina, Sicily, Mykonos,
SIREN SONG — Santorini may be the quintessential Greek isle. Greece, Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey, Rhodes, Santorini and Athens, Greece, and Naples, Italy. The postcard-perfect island of Mykonos is filled with windmills and dazzling white houses set against a shimmering blue sea. Basket-laden donkeys make their way through a maze of ancient streets designed to frustrate marauding pirates. Kusadasi, a popular resort town on
the Turkish coast, is the gateway to the ancient ruins of Ephesus, once the second largest city in the Roman Empire. Walking down the Arcadian Way, an ancient street paved with white marble, you can almost hear the footsteps of Alexander the Great and Anthony and Cleopatra reverberate on the stone. Dolphins frolic in the wake as you sail into storied ports like Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands. The
thickly walled Old Town is Europe’s largest inhabited medieval city. Santorini may be the quintessential Greek Isle, with whitewashed buildings and blued domed churches perched on dramatic cliffs overlooking an Aegean Sea the color of your dreams. Visitors can ride the mules up the 547 steps from the harbor up to the ancient town of Fira. The cradle of Western civilization Athens is revered for its golden age monuments like the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the temple of Athena Nike. Naples is the gateway to the famous archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, located under the looming shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The two towns remain frozen in time, buried by volcanic eruption in AD 79. For centuries Rome was the center of the world, filled with hidden squares, and ancient wonders like the Colosseum and the Pantheon, that still have the capacity to amaze. Don’t forget to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure your return.

The Post Graduate — Alfa Romeo introduces 4C Coupe Italian carmaker makes a memorable return to America
W
ith its stunning Italian design and Formula 1 derived innovations, the all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C may be the world’s first affordable supercar. Handcrafted in the Maserati plant in Modena, Italy the ground hugging mid-engine coupe marks the iconic Italian brand’s long anticipated return to North America after a nearly 20 year absence. In truth, Alfa Romeo has been pretty much a nonstarter on this side of the Atlantic since a youthful Dustin Hoffman tooled around L.A. in a bright red Duetto Spider in the 1967 film The Graduate. Now owned by Fiat Chrysler, the company plans to add seven new models, including two SUVs, to their lineup by 2018. The acronym ‘4C’ draws its inspiration from the brand’s legendary 8C and 6C models from the 1930s and 1940s, and references its innovative 4-cylinder all-aluminum engine. The exterior’s voluptuous curves pay homage to the ultra rare 1967 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, ranked number 15 in Top Gear’s 100 Sexiest Cars of all time. Alfa Romeo leveraged advanced solutions from Formula 1 racing to develop a competition-capable architecture that makes extensive use of aluminum, plus a composite body for an ultra-lightweight design. The carbon fiber monocoque chassis weighs just 236 lbs.
catalytic converter to the tailpipe. Those looking for a Grand Touring car like the Mercedes SLK may be disappointed. The C4 is engineered for performance and that means sacrificing some amenities like power steering and a glove compartment. The interior’s drab plastic surfaces could best be described as Greyhound Bus Terminal circa 1970. Just getting in and out of it with any dignity may require a background in gymnastics, or at the very least, a working knowledge of Gangnam Style dance moves. But what are a few tiny inconveniences when compared to its sinuous lines and seductive Italian charm? It can turn your daily commute into the Mille Miglia followed by a victory lap around Rome.
LOVE, ITALIAN STYLE — The 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Launch Edition. A lilliputian 1.75-liter flat four produces 237 horsepower and 258 lb. ft. of torque. That’s roughly on par with a Hyundai Sonata, but good enough to move the featherweight 4C from zero to sixty in about 4.5 seconds. And to paraphrase two-time presidential candidate Ross Perot “that giant sucking sound you hear behind you is the turbo.” Drivers can use the Alfa DNA selector to choose four distinct driving modes — Dynamic, Natural and All Weather
and Race, which disables most of the driver assists. The six speed automatic transmission can be shifted manually using the paddle shifters mounted on the steering column. The 4C is available in two variants, the 4C Coupe and the 4C Coupe Launch Edition. Only 500 serialized Launch Edition coupes will be available with upgrades like carbon fiber trim, a unique front fascia and a racing exhaust, by which they mean “no muffler.” The exhaust goes directly from the

What is a data breach and what you should know Things you can do in case you become a victim
D
ata breach woes aren’t just plaguing the United States. The world over, data breach incidents are happening at government, technology, education, healthcare, retail and financial service organizations. These are the industries in which the biggest and most breaches are occurring, according to KPMG’s Data Loss Barometer. Truth be told, data breaches happen at any type of business, from local dental clinics to big online retailers. The discomforting part is, the privacy of our data depends on the companies with which we share it. And sometimes those companies share data with thirdparty vendors, such as payment processors or cloud service providers that we don’t even know about. So you can see why data breaches have become so prevalent–both people and companies have data in so many places. When a company’s records are lost or stolen, your sensitive information (like your Social Security number or bank account information) can land in the hands of an identity thief. The thief then can use your information to siphon money from your bank account, gain access to your credit cards, or to create new accounts in your name. As a result, your credit reports can be blemished with unpaid accounts and you can start receiving phone calls from collection agencies.
GOOD PROTECTION — ProtectMyID® can help you address identity theft. What you should know: 1. State laws typically require the business to notify affected customers within a certain amount of time or be subject to a fine. 2. The District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands all have some type of data breach law. Five states – Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Colorado – do not. 3. In the past, some companies have paid for six to twelve months of credit monitoring for affected individuals. While this is something the Federal
Trade Commission (FTC) recommends to businesses that have suffered a data breach, it isn’t a requirement. What to do if you are a victim: Contact one of the three credit bureaus. Have an initial security alert added to your credit report which can help prevent further damage. Additional precautions will be taken to make sure anyone applying for credit in your name is you. You will have more time to investigate and get a free copy of your credit report.
File a police report. A police report can be instrumental in helping you place long-term alerts on your credit report and helping you recover from fraud and other crimes where your identity was used. Thoroughly review your credit report for suspicious information or activity. Request a copy of your credit report from the credit bureaus. You should also review your billing statements and immediately notify each creditor to dispute what you believe is fraudulent charges. Keep detailed records of your conversations and interactions. If you suspect, or you are a victim identity theft due to a data breach, you have first-hand knowledge of the stress it can cause. ProtectMyID®, offered to AAA members, can help you address identity theft as soon as you become aware of suspicious activity. This article is provided for general guidance and information. How you can survive a winter weather emergency Keep your cool if you’re stranded in your car
W
hether you’re driving to your local supermarket, or traveling from International Falls to Winnipeg, temperatures can fall fast and winter storms can be dangerous for those caught unprepared. Motorists should monitor weather conditions, pay close attention to storm warnings and road reports and trust them. Heavy snow and ice can trap motorists in their cars but attempting to walk for help in a blizzard can be a deadly decision. Disorientation and confusion can come very quickly in blowing snow. People should remain in their vehicle and wait for help to arrive. Emergency crews can find your vehicle a lot easier than they can find you. Don’t expect to be comfortable. The challenge is to survive until you’re found. Carry a winter survival kit. This should include a flashlight, batteries, hand/foot warmers, first aid supplies, high-energy snacks, brightly colored cloth or flag, a candle, matches, a cell phone, and a shovel. Don’t forget some kitty litter or sand, which can be used to provide added traction. If your car breaks down or gets stuck pull off the road as far as possible and don’t panic. Being hit by a passing car is the greatest danger at this point, so stay put.
THE COLD, HARD TRUTH — In any weather emergency, the challenge is to survive until you’re found. Let others know you are in trouble. Call first responders or AAA to inform them of your location and situation. Hang a distress flag from your aerial or window. Raise the hood when the snow stops falling. Other tips include: • Run the engine and heater approximately ten minutes of each hour. • Change positions and do minor exercises to maintain body heat. • Use newspapers, road maps, seat covers, floor mats or extra clothing for insulation and warmth. If there are •
•
•
two or more people, huddle together for warmth. Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by clearing snow from the exhaust pipe and cracking a window for ventilation. Turn on your inside dome light at night so first responders can spot you. Never overexert yourself. Avoid shoveling heavy snow or trying to push your car out of a deep snowdrift.
Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Symptoms of frostbite include loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in your fingers, toes, nose and earlobes. Hypothermia symptoms can include uncontrollable shivering, slow speech, memory lapses, drowsiness, exhaustion and frequent stumbling. If you suspect frostbite or hypothermia, warm the victim’s mid-trunk section. Warm the arms and legs last to avoid moving cold blood toward the heart. Avoid giving caffeine (such as coffee or tea) or alcohol to a frostbite or hypothermia victim. Sugary drinks are better than hot drinks for beating the cold. Delay your trip if possible in poor driving conditions, and if not, notify others of your plans. If you do become stranded preparation and knowing how to react are vital to keeping you safe.
GIVE YOUR CAR A CHECK-UP
To avoid mechanical breakdowns, have a qualified automotive technician like those in AAA’s Approved Auto Repair program, inspect the brakes, tires, cooling system, windshield wipers, battery, electrical system, lights, emergency flashers, ignition, defroster, and exhaust system.

On the beach in Florida’s Cultural Capital Sarasota is where the circus never leaves town
S
arasota is artsy, cosmopolitan and oddly un-Florida-like. Sometimes called Florida’s Cultural Capital, there are over 100 galleries, an Opera House, worldclass museums and a real downtown. Visitors willingly surrender their days to the sun in this lush subtropical estuary ringed by a necklace of six barrier islands, dreamily adrift in the Gulf of Mexico. Beach goers cautiously shuffle their feet in the surf in hopes off warding off stingrays. The islands are a study in contrasts. Secluded Long Boat Key sports one the wealthiest zip codes in America, while Siesta Key is as laid-back as a Grateful Dead album. In 2011, Dr. Stephen Leatherman AKA “Dr. Beach” named Siesta Beach No. 1 in the nation for its powdery white sand. Composed almost entirely of crushed quartz crystal, its unique composition makes it remarkably cool on the feet. Although technically not a key, Venice Beach has a Jaws-dropping attraction. It’s home to the world’s largest collection of fossilized shark teeth. Visitors can scour the beach for shark teeth in varying shades of black, brown and gray—some dating back millions of years. John Ringling used his circus elephants to build the first bridge from

the mainland to Lido Key. A slender constellation of beaches circle this idyllic dot of sand, which is also home to St. Armands Circle, a European-flavored piazza filled with designer boutiques and some of the area’s best restaurants. Sarasota’s legacy as a circus town is still evident in the neat, ranch-style homes where an attached gorilla cage is as ubiquitous as a two-car garage. In
those heady days the town was peopled by legends like Emmett Kelly, May Wirth and the Flying Wallendas. Ringling picked out a prime spot on the Gulf to erect Cà d’Zan, or House of John, his magnificent Venetianstyle estate. Soon after its completion he built a museum modeled on the Florentine Uffizi Gallery to house his collection of Old Masters, includ-
ing Velazquez, van Dyke and Rubens. Now a public museum, visitors can stroll the 66 acres of Bayfront Gardens, or admire the replicas of Greek and Roman sculpture, including a bronze cast of Michelangelo’s David. The Ringling Circus Museum preserves rare Big Top memorabilia including parade wagons and calliopes. Visitors can walk the wire, squeeze into a clown car, or view John Ringling’s luxurious private railroad car. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is an urban oasis with nine acres of banyan groves, a koi pond and tropical gardens set on the sparkling bay. The Tropical Conservatory houses more types of epiphytes — orchids, ferns, bromeliads and heliconias — than any other place in the nation. Golfers can tee off at more than 100 courses including the Bobby Jones Golf Complex, a 45-hole municipal layout. The legendary Donald Ross designed the original 18 holes and Bobby Jones cut the ribbon at the dedication ceremony in 1927. IF YOU GO

Color your world at Epcot Flower & Garden Festival Spring is in the air at Walt Disney World Resort
S
pring will be bursting out all over at the 22nd Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, March 4 to May 17 at Walt Disney World Resort. New Disney character topiaries include a nod to “Frozen” while Outdoor Kitchens will serve a fresh take on traditional favorites. Green thumb-minded guests can get “hands-on” during Disney-led gardening seminars. The festival, including most gardening programs and exhibits, is included in regular Epcot admission A little gardening magic goes a long way with over 100 whimsical topiaries including Snow White, Bambi, Mickey Mouse, Simba and Peter Pan. Each year, topiary experts pull out all the “chops” to create showstoppers like Chip and Dale in a new Epcot front entrance garden vignette, and Disney’s first Anna and Elsa topiaries in a scene from the Oscar-winning animated film’s finale. One of the most interesting challenges is finding just the right plant materials to bring the park’s topiaries to life and the details can be daunting. The “Frozen” topiary vignette at World Showcase Plaza, will illustrate Anna’s and Elsa’s icy world with white and silver blooms of delphinium, alyssum and other floral varieties. Tinker Bell’s Butterfly House will return with a huge, screened, walkthrough enclosure with hundreds of

This year’s concert series will welcome stars like the Gin Blossoms, Pablo Cruise, The Village People and more to the America Gardens Theatre with their timeless tunes. Chefs will be cooking up a variety of new and popular returning menu items, including vegetarian and glutenfree dishes, in the festival’s Outdoor Kitchens where guests can sample garden and spring-inspired tapas-sized food and beverages. When the sun sets, illuminated topiary and play gardens will glow brightly for an after-dark festival experience.

Co-piloting with advanced driver assistance technology AAA advises drivers to know the limits of these systems
T
oday’s vehicles can detect and communicate important safety information to the driver and in some cases, assume temporary control of the steering and braking functions to prevent a crash. Advanced driver assistance technologies have to the potential to keep occupants safer, as long as drivers are aware of their limitations. Motorists must learn how these systems operate and how best to manage them for maximum safety and convenience. Recent testing by the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center, found that blind-spot monitoring and lanedeparture warning systems performed effectively in multiple situations, but there were some situations where the systems failed to perform as expected: • Blind-spot monitoring systems had difficulty detecting fast-moving vehicles – such as when merging onto a busy highway. Alerts were often provided too late for evasive action. • Motorcycles were detected by blindspot monitoring systems 26 percent later than passenger vehicles. • Road conditions were often a problem for lane-departure warning systems. Worn pavement markers, construction zones and intersections can cause the lane-departure warning system to lose track of lane location.
CHANGING LANES — Motorists must learn to manage advanced driver assistance devices for maximum safety. •
The litany of alerts and warnings could be confusing. Auditory, visual or haptic responses — or a combination — could be similar to other advanced driver assistance features that delivered the same warnings. Pros and cons aside, motorists will encounter advanced driver assistance technology more often as automakers introduce these devices across their vehicle lines. Being aware of these
systems and understanding how they operate is a necessary step before driving the vehicle. Tests show that drivers can effectively interact with these systems by: • Gaining experience with the technology. Both systems are effective, convenient solutions to help reduce driver workload. There are limitations, and systems vary greatly. Motorists should consult the vehicle’s owner’s
manual to determine how the systems work before driving the vehicle. • Leverage system input for enhanced safety. Blind-spot monitoring systems detected approaching vehicles as far away as 200 feet. In most cases, the systems also properly detected parked vehicles. These enhanced views of the roadway are an asset for drivers. • Staying engaged. AAA found instances when the blind-spot monitoring system did not provide appropriate warnings or delivered the alarm when the approaching vehicle was only a few feet away. Drivers relying on these systems may not have had time to maneuver to safety. “With nearly three-quarters of new vehicles offering blind-spot detection and 50 percent offering lane-departure warning as options, it’s key that consumers are educated on how to get the best benefit from these systems,” says John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director of Automotive Engineering. “AAA’s tests found that these systems are a great asset to drivers, but there is a learning curve.”
