Forget the Stamp with AutoPay With Auto Pay, you can avoid late payments and a lapse in your AAA membership. You’ll still receive a paper bill, and you can update your membership prior to making a payment. The credit or debit card you leave on file will be charged the amount of the bill. Any payments from your card will be debited 10 to 15 days before your renewal date. Simply logon to your account at AAA.com and select “Enroll” under Billing Information, or call the Member Service phone number on the back of your membership card to sign up.

Consumer Reports Touts AAA Discounts The December 2015 issue of Consumer Reports highlights the value of AAA discounts offerings as a primary reason for becoming a member. “If you travel frequently, AAA’s discount program alone could be worth the cost of membership,” the publication’s Car Strategist column reads. “Even if you find a provider or program better for your needs, you may want to consider keeping your AAA membership just for the discounts, with its roadside assistance as a backup.” “We are pleased to be complimented by a well-respected magazine, which lends further credibility to AAA Discounts & Rewards,” said Jim Lehman, AAA East Central president.

Free Junior Associates — Priceless Protection for Teens AAA members can extend their AAA coverage for dependents age 16 to 18, with a free Junior Associate membership. They’ll carry their very own AAA card, and are entitled to AAA benefits and services including 24/7 roadside assistance, exclusive savings at AAA Discounts & Rewards, AAA Mobile solutions and more. Members can add Junior Associates by calling or visiting your local AAA office or, by clicking on aaa. com/JuniorAssociate. (All Associate Members must reside at the Primary Member’s address, and proof of age may be required).

A great member experience across every platform New and enhanced services expand AAA’s digital footprint

I

n an era when every new piece of technology promises a magical new future, AAA has opted for a more practical approach. Virtual and mobile platforms aren’t just the flavor of the month, but a means to extend AAA products and services to a mobile and tech-savvy audience. “Integration with the newest platforms enables AAA to deliver a great member experience with timely, accurate information across the entire consumer technology space,” notes Jim Lehman, president AAA East Central, “whether a member uses a desktop or notebook computer, a smartphone, a tablet or wearable technology.” AAA’s new Apple Watch functionality puts consumers in charge of their time and helps them make decisions on how much they spend on fuel. Apple Watch owners can also find the fastest route to nearby stations. AAA Gas Price functionality for Apple Watch searches gas station pricing within a multi-mile radius of the user. It then shows the options the user selected — fastest or cheapest. The fastest gas station is determined by reviewing detailed turn-by-turn directions of the eight closest stations and layering traffic information to compute drive times. Navigation to the stations is routed through Apple Maps. Users can also configure the app to select the price for the type of fuel they use. Be sure to program the watch before driving, then follow Apple Watch’s

and you can watch in real time as the responding service vehicle makes its way to you. For more information or to download the AAA Mobile app, visit the AAA Mobile Solutions page at AAA.com/Mobile. AAA’s TripTik Planner at AAA.com provides unprecedented access to AAA travel resources in multiple formats and across all devices. Users will notice a new look in the system’s tab and tool selections. The changes are designed to streamline access to core features and present a more fluid and responsive layout for all desktop and mobile screen sizes. Along with TripTik maps, directions and Drive Trips, AAA’s all-in-one platform for trip-planning resources, will also become a portal for locationbased content when a user maps, or explores a destination. Members can easily access AAA Road Service Online, from their PC or tablet device by clicking on the Road Service Online link at AAA.com. You’ll be guided through the online request process, and requests made online go directly to the dispatcher, so the time it takes to request service online can be considerably shorter than by phone. This is particularly true during severe weather when call volume can be heavy. Visit AAA.com the next time you need roadside assistance. While technology offers a seemingly endless capacity to enhance our motoring and travel lives, AAA reminds motorists that safety is always the number one priority. No application or device should be used in a manner that will distract drivers from their primary responsibility of driving safely and without distractions.

membersonly AAA Member Rewards Visa® now with microchip technology Make your travels safe and secure with AAA

A

AA members enjoy added convenience and security when traveling abroad when they use a AAA “chip” credit card and take advantage of AAA’s foreign currency program. While abroad, many travelers encounter merchants that won’t accept their traditional credit or debit cards. That’s because in the United States, credit card transactions are processed primarily by card readers that read the magnetic stripe on the back of the credit card. In Europe and many other countries, credit card transactions are processed primarily by card readers that read an embedded microchip on the card. The chip makes transactions more secure and as a result this technology has been widely adopted. The good news for AAA members is that AAA credit cards are available with chip technology. If you already have a AAA credit card you can call the number of the back of your card to request a chip card. If you’re not

a AAA cardholder, visit your local branch office or aaa.com/creditcard to learn about the many benefits of carrying a AAA credit card. Here are a few key things you need to know about chip cards before you travel: Chip cards come in two types: ‘Chip & PIN’ and ‘Chip & Signature.’ With Chip & PIN, the cardholder enters a 4-digit PIN to complete each transaction. With Chip & Signature, the cardholder simply signs for the transaction. AAA credit cards with chip technology are Chip & Signature cards. Most of Europe and a number of other countries prefer Chip & PIN technology, while most issuers in the US are offering Chip & Signature technology. Therefore, when traveling abroad with a chip card issued by a bank in the United States, including your AAA credit card, you may need to let the merchant know that you’ll be signing for your transaction rather than entering a PIN.

In addition, be sure to carry some cash in the local currency since US-issued chip cards cannot be used in unattended terminals and kiosks in countries that issue Chip & PIN cards. That way you’ll be ready to grab a quick bite to eat or pay for ground transportation upon arrival. By purchasing foreign currency before you leave you also save on service fees. Many AAA offices provide foreign currency services, including buying back your leftover currency after the trip. So relax, have a great trip, and enjoy the added security and peace of mind that comes with your AAA membership.

Safe, convenient & rewarding With the AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card, you are never alone. There is someone to assist you with any matter regarding your account 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For information about the card or to apply, call 866-665-3581 or visit AAA.com/creditcard.

Keeping the roof over your head Proper maintenance can help you avoid expensive repairs By Robin Jones hen a big storm blows into town, are you holding your breath, wondering if your roof will leak? While rain falls outside, do you kick yourself for not having hired that contractor to inspect your roof? If so, you’re not alone. Too many homeowners discover that their roof needs repairs only after it starts to leak. Then, if the leak causes serious water damage, there’s a chance their insurance may not cover repairs. The best way to avoid expensive repairs resulting from a leaky roof is to perform regular preventive maintenance and replace your roof when damage or age dictates it’s time. Here are a few maintenance tips, along with some guidelines for choosing a contractor: Check your roof for signs of wear annually. From the ground, take a detailed look at your roof with a pair of binoculars. Are any shingles torn, loose, or missing? If so, you may need to hire someone to secure or replace them. Is there any sign of other damage? Often the first place a roof shows its age is in the shingles that cap the roof peaks. Replacing these will cost far less than a whole new roof and can give your roof up to five more years of life. Inspect the gutters. Clear out debris that’s stuck in the gutter system. Leaves, twigs, and other waste can stop water

W

UP ON THE ROOF — Homeowners often discover a roof problem only after a leak. from draining properly, which can lead to water damage to your roof, walls, and ceiling. What’s more, heavy mounds of debris can cause gutters to sag and even fall down. Trim tree limbs so that the leaves and branches can’t fall on your roof and cause damage. Look for other signs your roof might need replacing. If you can clearly see a leak stain on the ceiling inside your home, if shingle granules start to show up in your roof gutters or fall onto the

driveway, or if it looks as if your roof is sagging or dipping, you probably have a problem. Call a contractor and schedule a roof inspection as soon as possible to ward off further damage. Replace it on time. Most roofing types are designed to last an average of 15 years, but certain types can last as long as 25 years. Also, roof warranties can vary widely depending on the materials used. Maintain records detailing when your roof was installed and

what the warranty protects so you’ll know when it’s time to replace it. Putting on a new roof increases your home’s value, and you might also get a discount on your insurance. Check their credentials. Before you sign a contract or hand over any money, ask your roofer for proof that he or she is licensed and carries general liability and worker’s comp insurance. Then ask for referrals, and check them. You want to hire someone with a solid reputation and many years of experience in the trade. Get it in writing. A good contractor will provide you with a written estimate on the cost of the roof repair and how long it will take. If your roofer can’t (or won’t) give you a contract, or if he asks you for more than half of the price upfront, you’re probably better off finding someone else.

The 14-night Exotic Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Celebrity Eclipse, departs from Miami and calls in at Willemstad, Curaçao; Kralendijk, Bonaire; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; Basseterre, St. Kitts; Philipsburg, St. Maarten, with an overnight in Oranjestad, Aruba. License plates on Aruba bear the slogan “One Happy Island” and it shows. Located 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela, days are filled with sunshine and the beaches curve like brilliant,

Genuinely Caribbean excursions include evening jazz, bonfires and exclusive boat parties in Cozumel, Mexico; an exclusive wine tasting at the Caribbean’s first winery in Willemstad, Curacao; drifting along Aruba’s picturesque coastline, to live Caribbean music, on a special sunset cruise; and nighttime, horse-drawn carriage tours along winding cobblestone streets, past historical colonial mansions in Cartagena, Colombia. More time in port means more time to explore, and Celebrity now offer more overnights, more excursions and more of the Caribbean than any other cruise line. Vacationers can go beyond the ordinary to capture firsthand what makes each island truly special.

Study your options for travel insurance What student travelers and parents need to know

A

new year means a new semester for the college student in your life. Chances are, at some point, your son, daughter or relative may have the option of traveling and studying abroad. Whether they’re planning to visit for a week over spring break or are diving into the culture and lifestyle of a new country for a semester or more, international travel offers an immersive and unique opportunity for students. But, the same opportunity can leave with an anxiety-inducing prospect. Before the process becomes too overwhelming, there are some steps you can take to ensure everyone’s peace of mind. For spring breakers headed abroad, making sure all the essentials are covered is integral. A short trip overseas requires at least a passport. Longer stays, depending on the country may also require a visa. Be sure to allow enough time—roughly four to six weeks—for the application to be processed. As part of the passport application, several other documents are needed to fulfill the request. A copy of their birth certificate, a photocopy of a valid driver’s license and two passport photos, along with the application form and fee must be submitted for processing. Many local AAA branches offer a passport photo service available

TRAVELS WITH YOU — Your medical insurance may not cover you outside the country. for members. Passport renewals may be sent by mail, but applications must be made in person for first-time applicants and those younger than 16. Keep up with the news, and follow travel alerts and statements through the U.S. Department of State. Signing up for the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) keeps you

informed through alerts and messages to travelers and their loved ones about travel concerns in other countries. U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad are able to register their trips with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, for free, as well. Remember to make insurance arrangements, as well. Not all health insurance policies cover medical care

abroad, and those that do often have stipulations regarding the types of issues covered and rarely cover medical evacuations. Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance covers the unexpected for you and your loved ones while overseas. With a travel insurance policy, your travel investment is protected if the trip needs to be cancelled due to illness or injury, flight delays or bad weather. You’re even protected while away. Travel insurance goes beyond borders, where your domestic medical insurance or Medicare may not cover. Depending on your destination, the cost of health care, hospitalization and emergency medical evacuation can be prohibitive. Allianz Global Assistance offers several different packages to meet your vacation needs. A AAA travel agent can assist you in choosing the right package, no matter where you have made your travel arrangements.

Wilderness, wildlife, wonder and more The National Park Service turns 100 this year

T

he National Park Service turns 100 this year, and everyone can take part in the celebration. The Centennial is more than a birthday. It will kick off a second century of stewardship by engaging communities through recreation, conservation, and historic preservation programs. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation to create the National Park Service, which preserves and protects 408 sites throughout the country. Each one, whether it’s a national park, a monument, historic site or a national seashore, was established to protect, preserve and share its national significance for future generations. Some, like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite conserve magnificent landscapes and natural wonders. Others, like the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania commemorate people and events. Chicago’s newly designated Pullman Historic District, marks the birthplace of the first AfricanAmerican labor union. Parks like Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley National Park offer easy access to major cities, while others are extremely remote. Kobuk Valley, located high in the Arctic Circle, is accessible only by dogsled, snowmobile, or on foot. The largest — Alaska’s Wrangel-St. Elias National Park and Preserve — unravels over 13 million acres and is

MAGIC MOUNTAINS — Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Jeff Dunn photo. larger than nine states. At just 0.02 acres Philadelphia’s Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial is the smallest, honoring the Polish American hero of the Revolutionary War. America’s national parks are home to Denali, the highest point in North America at 20,322 feet, and Death Valley, the lowest (also the hottest and driest) at 282-feet below sea level.

There are 35 parks named after presidents, and one that celebrates four of them. Mount Rushmore National Memorial, established in 1925, features 60-foot tall sculptures of Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln, but somehow ended up being named after Charles Rushmore, a New York attorney. The Roosevelt Campobello International Park is actu-

ally located in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Some of the oldest trees on earth live on the craggy mountain slopes of Nevada’s Great Basin National Park. The rare Great Basin bristlecone pine can survive for 4,000 years or more under extremely harsh conditions. Mammoth Cave National Park is the world’s longest cave system, with more than 365 miles explored. Located in the Green River valley in south central Kentucky, cave tours have been offered since 1816, making Mammoth Cave one of North America’s oldest tourist attractions. A national park can be many different things to many different people and the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation encourage you to connect with and celebrate our national parks this year with their Find Your Park campaign. Whether you’re a regular visitor, or a virtual explorer, take time to experience, explore, learn, be inspired, or just relax in America’s national parks, which will continue to amaze and delight visitors for the next 100 years.

Teens need to know the rules before they hit the road “5 to Drive” campaign seeks to boost teen driver safety

P

arents may not realize it, but driving or riding in a car with a teen driver is the number one threat to their teen’s safety. The fact is, about 3,000 teens lose their lives every year in car crashes. That’s eight teens a day too many. The main cause? Driver inexperience. One thing is certain: teens aren’t ready to have the same level of driving responsibility as older adults. Yet, a recent survey shows that only 25 percent of parents have had a serious talk with their kids about the key components of driving. Parents need to talk with their kids about the many dangers of driving, including alcohol, seat belts, texting, speeding, and extra passengers. AAA East Central and Auto Club Driving Schools Inc., are joining with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote the “5 to Drive” initiative. The campaign aims to help parents begin a conversation with their teen drivers about the rules of the road. “5 to Drive is all about getting parents and guardians to engage in an ongoing discussion with their teens about safe driving,” said Al Salyers, manager of Auto Club Driving School Inc. “The idea is to give parents some clear and concise talking points to use when they share these 5 to Drive rules with their teens. It’s a simple, straightforward checklist that can help them talk about good driving skills and most

156 people were killed in crashes that involved a distracted teen driver. Stop Speeding Before It Stops You — In 2013, almost one-third (29 percent) of teen drivers involved in a fatal crash were speeding. No More Than One Passenger at a Time — The risk of a fatal crash goes up with each additional passenger. Teen drivers need to follow these rules and any other restrictions outlined in Ohio’s graduated driver licensing (GDL) law. Parents need to outline rules and explain the deadly consequences of unsafe driving practices. The “5 to Drive” campaign can help parents start that conversation. “We’re asking parents and guardians to reinforce these five basic rules with young drivers in their family,” Salyers said. “Adults control the keys and 5 to Drive is the conversation that needs to happen before you hand them over.”

FIVE TO KEEP THEM ALIVE — Parents can help change the numbers on teen driving crashes by explaining the risks. importantly, prevent a tragedy before it happens.” No Drinking and Driving — Almost one out of five (19 percent) of the young drivers (15 to 19 years old) involved in fatal crashes had been drinking, even though they were too young to legally buy or possess alcohol. Make Cancun your place in the sun Flawless beaches and fabulous attractions

C

ancun could best be described as a beach with an island in the middle. Centuries ago, Mayan emperors traveled here to get some R&R. Today, this cosmopolitan resort perched on the limestone shelf of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is among the premier vacation spots on the planet. Luxury hotels line the Hotel Zone, a seahorse-shaped oasis connected by two causeways and flanked by the tranquil Nichupte Lagoon and the restless Caribbean Sea. People watchers can take a stroll on the palm-fringed promenade hugging the shoreline. Cancun’s twelve miles of beach are celebrated for their turquoise waters and powdery white sand. All are open to the public and anyone with the inclination can walk from one end to the other. You can either hike along the northern shore by the calm waters of Bahia de Mujeres, or follow the Caribbean Sea on the eastern shore. The sand here is like talcum powder and surprisingly cool thanks to a limestone composition that doesn’t hold the heat. Playa Ballenas is the magnificent white beach that established Cancun’s reputation as a resort, while Playa Las Perlas is a favorite with boogie boarders. Playa Tortugas is a popular public beach and a departure point to sleepy Isla Mujeres or Island of Women. One of the most idyllic spots in the

REACH THE BEACH — Cancun’s 12 miles of beach are celebrated for their brilliant turquoise waters and fine white sand. Caribbean, the tiny island is home to a turtle sanctuary, the remains of a notorious pirate’s lair and the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, one of nature’s most bizarre encounters. Fierce Tiger sharks lie motionless 65-feet below the surface, a phenomenon caused by the cave’s oxygen rich water, which acts like a narcotic on the soporific sharks.

Cancun’s waters are legendary for their clarity with schools of dazzling blue neons hovering among the rocks and piers. The otherworldly Underwater Museum, which opened in 2010, features more than 500 life-size figures in two locations, displayed in less than 10 feet of water. Shoppers can bargain for authen-

tic Mexican handicrafts, silver, Mayainspired art and designer clothing. The majority of open-air markets are located in El Centro, the downtown area and the Mercados on Tulum Avenue are a great place to practice your bargaining skills. Party animals will want to take full advantage of Cancun’s legendary nightlife at clubs like Coco Bongo, a multilevel madhouse full of mammoth video screens, brilliantly costumed dancers, Cirque du Soleil style acrobats, celebrity impersonators, conga lines, confetti canons and balloons. Cancun is close to several Mayan archeological sites including El Ray located right in the resort area. Chichen-Itza, about 120-miles southwest of the city, covers about six square miles, and is dominated by the iconic, 75-foot-tall Kulkulkan step pyramid, which functions as a giant solar calendar. During the equinox, the sunlight sends an image of a serpent undulating down the temple walls.

Why your mileage drops when the mercury plunges Winter weather takes a bite out of your fuel economy

C

old weather and winter driving conditions are not only difficult; they can reduce your fuel economy significantly. Fuel economy tests by the U.S. Department of Energy show that a conventional car’s gas mileage in short-trip city driving, is about 12% lower at 20°F than it would be at 77°F. It can drop as much as 22% for very short trips (3 to 4 miles). The effect on hybrids is even worse. Their fuel economy can drop about 31% to 34% under these conditions. Cold weather affects your vehicle in more ways than you might expect. It takes longer for your engine to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature. This affects shorter trips more, because your vehicle spends more of your trip at lessthan-optimal temperatures. Engine and transmission friction increases in cold temperatures due to cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids. Heated seats, window defrosters, and heater fans use additional power. Warming up your vehicle before you start your trip lowers your fuel economy—idling gets zero miles per gallon. Cold air is denser, increasing aerodynamic drag on your vehicle, especially at highway speeds. Tire pressure decreases in colder temperatures, increasing rolling resistance. Winter grades of gasoline have

DON’T CARRY THAT WEIGHT — Extra weight from snow and ice will drag down your mileage. slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends. Fuel must be able to evaporate at low temperatures for the engine to operate properly, so refineries add butane, which can reduce the amount of energy per gallon between 2 and 8 percent Battery performance decreases in cold weather, making it harder for your alternator to keep your battery charged.

This also affects the performance of the regenerative braking system on hybrids. In severe winter weather, your mpg can drop even further. Icy or snowcovered roads decrease your tires’ grip on the road, wasting energy. Snow and ice reduce your vehicle’s aerodynamics and add excess weight that drags down your mileage. You may not be able to completely

avoid the effects of cold weather on your fuel economy, but you can do some simple things to improve your gas mileage. Park your car in a warmer place, such as your garage, to increase the initial temperature of your engine and cabin. If you drive a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, preheating the cabin while plugged into the charger can extend your vehicle’s range. Minimize idling to warm up your car. Engines warm up faster when being driven, which allows the heat to turn on sooner, decreasing your fuel costs, and reducing emissions. Clean all snow and ice off your vehicle and use the type of oil recommended by your manufacturer for cold weather driving. Colder temperatures cause your tire pressure to drop — typically 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit — so make a point to monitor your tire pressure at least twice a month. Snow covered roads and underinflated tires dramatically increase rolling resistance, causing excessive wear, and robbing fuel efficiency.
