It used to be that cabins with a balcony were a rare thing, something to be coveted, something to splurge on — no longer. In the last ten years, cruise ship balconies have gone from luxury amenities to absolute necessities. On Princess Cruises’ newest ship, Royal Princess, all the 1,438 outside staterooms come with a balcony. In contrast, the most recent ship to that, the Ruby Princess, has less than 70% balconies. The percentage of balconies on Holland America’s newest ships has jumped to 78% from just 43%. New ships in the Celebrity and Carnival lineup are up to 90% and 80% balconies, respectively. Just about half of the outside staterooms on the brandnew Norwegian Breakaway come with balconies. On the big ships, it’s not just balconies; the newest trend is quality balconies. The standard size balcony with 40 to 50 square feet of space is now affordable and available to most cruise passengers. On the larger ships such as Celebrity Reflection and Norwegian Epic, there are so many balcony staterooms that they are actually less expensive than staterooms without balconies. The problem is, you can’t fit much more than two chairs and a teeny table on the standard size balcony. The newest luxury ships are designed with balconies for almost

Greetings from the Chairman

by Gregory E. Grim

I

received a letter from Dick Adams, a recently retired member of the East Penn Region’s Board of Directors that I thought was very poignant and a true testament to the dedication and loyalty not only of our AAA members, but also of our employees up to and including our Board of Directors. I want to share some of Dick’s thoughts with you, our members …. Thirty-one years ago Dick was elected to the Board of Directors of the Lehigh Valley Motor Club. At that time he thought AAA was restricted to providing emergency road service and little more and that during his tenure he would be restricted to the finite details of a service organization which was founded back in 1909. Since his original election – and through 10 others – Dick learned the Club’s history and the fact that, indeed, AAA has the best road service in the industry. It was after these initial lessons that his education about AAA truly began. Exposure to our travel business, insurance products, retail stores, and general member services taught Dick that AAA was a full-service member organization and his association with the Club quickly became not only a passion but also a thrill and a challenge. When Dick joined the Board of Directors there were just over 70,000 members within the local service area. Over the years through membership growth and Club consolidations our Club has grown to become part of a much larger organization with charge of over 14 million AAA card-carrying members. The services

and benefits we now offer our members (and employees) is truly exemplary. We, together, move forward with great expectation and unparalleled opportunity as members of AAA. Dick’s tenure as an active member of the East Penn Region Board of Directors comes to a close and he transitions to an Honorary Director, he is humbled to have been part of a local community organization which has become a leader in the travel, insurance and automobile safety industry. Dick is also proud to have been actively associated with a group that has championed teen driving safety, school bus safety, senior driving programs, Don’t Drink and Drive safety programs, highway improvement efforts, texting while driving bans and road safety efforts; in addition to providing college scholarships annually for deserving former safety patrols, launching a battery replacement program, delivering emergency road services and so many more worthwhile efforts to improve our quality of life. Over the years we have enjoyed great pleasure in being part of an organization that is well positioned and prepared to meet future challenges and opportunities. Dick remarked that it has also been a thrill to see our compatibility with community organizations grow in all our markets. Locally AAA interfaces with safety organizations, hospitals, service providers, social groups and others in our continuing effort to be good corporate citizens. In his thirty-plus years of serving on the Board, Dick has served with some phenomenal individuals, including the other Directors, the general membership, our employees, as well as many others too numerous to mention. It is with great gratitude and sincere appreciation that we thank Dick for his many years of dedicated service to the Club; and we look forward to even more opportunities for him to continue to serve AAA in his new role.

School’s Open – Are You Prepared? T

he school year has begun and as children take to the streets, their morning and afternoon commutes can be dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Administration in 2010 almost one-fifth of all children between the ages of 5 and 9 who died in motor vehicle crashes were pedestrians. On average, one pedestrian is killed in the United States every two hours. How can we prevent this from happening? Motorists are encouraged to stay alert in areas where children are present, paying special attention during the morning and afternoon hours while children are traveling to and from school. Look out for children who may potentially dart out into the street, particularly while driving in school zones, around playgrounds, approaching school buses that are loading or unloading children, or in neighborhoods. Children are often distracted by thoughts of playtime or are unable to accurately judge traffic situations while on their journey home, so it’s imperative that motorists keep this in mind and focus solely on the act of driving.

2

September/October 2013

Having a heightened sense of awareness of children and following the practices below will help to keep your drive and children safe: • S low down in or near school and residential areas. •D rive with your headlights on, even during the day, so children and other drivers can see you. • L ook for clues such as AAA School Safety PatrolTM members, crossing guards, bicycles, and playgrounds which can indicate children could be in the area. • S can between parked cars and other objects for signs that children could dart into the road. •P ractice extra caution in bad weather or times of limited visibility. •A lways stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students. Remember, School’s Open – Drive Carefully. You can make a difference just by staying alert and taking extra care while driving where children are present.

S

tandard auto, homeowners and boat insurance policies cover liability a person may have for injuries or property damage suffered by someone else. Insurance companies design them to cover accidents for which the insured person may owe tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, sometimes the person may be responsible for an accident so catastrophic that the damages are $1,000,000 or more. To cover financially devastating events like these, insurance companies offer personal umbrella policies. These policies provide additional protection when an accident uses up the amounts of insurance provided by the other policies. They may also cover some types of losses these other policies do not cover. There is not a “standard” umbrella policy; each company’s offering will be different. Therefore, it helps to have a checklist of considerations when evaluating a policy. First, identify those things that could expose you to a catastrophic loss. How many cars do you own? Do you have inexperienced drivers in your household? Household attractions like swimming pools, trampolines, and swing-sets present an exposure to severe losses. Boats, like cars, can cause serious injuries and damage if the operators are inattentive, intoxicated, or inexperienced.

Next, identify other exposures you may have that do not involve potential physical injury, illness, property damage or that might require different coverage. Do you or any members of your family participate in social media Web sites or online discussion forums? Does anyone coach a youth sports team, belong to the governing board of a non-profit organization, write computer code as a hobby, or give music lessons? These activities present different exposures to legal liability. Review your insurance policies. How much will your auto insurance pay for injuries to one other person? How much will it pay collectively for injuries to more than one? How much will it pay for property damage? How much will your homeowners' policy pay for your personal liability for an accident? Does it cover any business activities? Does it cover family members accused of slander, libel, or defamation of character in online postings? Does it cover you for allegedly causing mental anguish to a kid who didn’t get much playing time on a team you coached, or trouble caused by a computer program you wrote? How much will your boat-owners policy pay for your liability for boating accidents? The answers to these questions will tell you where an umbrella policy can help. For example, if your auto policy will pay up to $250,000 for injuries to one person and $500,000 for injuries to multiple people, an umbrella with a $1,000,000 limit will give you insurance equaling $1,500,000 for injuries to two or more people. If your homeowners policy will pay up to $300,000 for your liability, the same umbrella will afford $1,300,000 if someone gets seriously hurt at your home. The umbrella limit of insurance also applies on top of the limit on the boat policy. In addition, the umbrella may cover things like volunteer activities, statements made online, and certain business activities that a homeowners' or auto policy might not cover. Normally, the insurance company will require you to pay a deductible amount (such as $250 or $500) before it will pay for a loss that one of these other policies does not cover. A professional insurance agent can help you sort out what your current insurance does and does not cover and what additional coverages an umbrella will provide. It is important to compare all the coverages the policies provide and not just their prices. Fortunately, catastrophic accidents are extremely rare, but having an umbrella policy when they happen can make it easier to get through them. Trust AAA to steer you right on all your current and future Auto, Home and Life insurance needs. Combining your coverage with one insurance company could make a significant difference in your premium. AAA Members Save On Prescriptions

Y

our current insurance or Medicare Part D doesn’t cover your prescription? No problem. AAA members save an average of 24 percent on prescriptions at more than 60,000 participating pharmacies nationwide! You can even save on pet prescriptions that are filled at a pharmacy. Whether you frequently purchase maintenance medication or need a one-time fill to treat a seasonal illness, you can save money on prescriptions by presenting your AAA membership card at a participating pharmacy - no extra cards needed! The information required by the pharmacy to offer the AAA discount is printed on the back of your AAA membership card. AAA members are pleasantly surprised at how much their AAA Prescription Savings card saves them at their neighborhood pharmacy. For many, it adds up to hundreds of dollars a year. Meet a few members who put their AAA Prescription Savings card to the test.

Tanya’s story

Tanya went to her doctor who prescribed a $150 per month brand name medication. Tanya had health insurance, but no drug coverage from her insurer. Worse, there was no generic equivalent to the brand name drug she was prescribed. “I had used my benefit before and saved a few dollars here and there,” said Tanya, “but with this new brand medication, I used my card and saved $30! That’s going to make a huge difference for me month to month. I was thrilled and it reminded me that I need to show my AAA card every time I go to the pharmacy.”

Douglas’s story

When his yearly AAA renewal packet arrived, Douglas presented his AAA membership card to his pharmacist and asked him to place it on file. “Immediately I started saving money,” said Douglas. “My medication was costing me $89 a month. But with my AAA card, it only cost me $30 a month!

What can you expect when using the AAA Prescription Savings program? •S avings are only available at participating pharmacies. •M ore than 60,000 pharmacies participate nationwide. • Savings vary by pharmacy and drug. • There is no guaranteed percentage savings on every prescription purchase. (Avg. is 24%)

When a generic form of Douglas’ medication became available, his prescription dropped to $35, and with his AAA Prescription Savings ben-efit, he was able buy it for just $11 a month. “I figured out that I’m saving $24 a month, multiplied by 12 months. That’s a lot,” said Douglas. “Better yet, it pays for my AAA membership!”

Char’s story

Because a preexisting condition was not covered by her health insurance, Char was forced to pay full price for some of her medications. But that changed the day she joined AAA. “I filled out the card and showed it to my pharmacist,” said Char. “That day, I cut my prescription costs in half! And, I’ve saved $300 to $400 a year ever since. I think it’s the best benefit that AAA has to offer.” Like these members, any AAA members can use the AAA Prescription Savings program anytime their medication is not covered by insurance. This is especially true for many lifestyle medications, such as smoking cessation therapies, skin care and ED products. And, members save on pet medicines when they fill their prescriptions through a pharmacist. AAA Prescription Savings works in 9 out of 10 pharmacies* – with over 60,000 participating pharmacies nationwide. Stores include CVS/pharmacy, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Target, Wal-Mart, and Safeway, just to name a few. For more information on AAA’s Prescription Savings program, visit AAA.com/prescriptions. And next time you need a prescription, remember to show your AAA card at the pharmacy and save. It’s that simple. AAA Prescription Savings is not insurance. AAA Prescription Savings Frequently Asked Questions Q: Who can use AAA Prescription Savings? A: AAA members and all family members in their household – including pets. Q: What do I need to do to receive the AAA Prescription Savings discount? A: You already have it! The AAA Prescription Savings program is a FREE AAA Member Benefit. The information required by a pharmacist is printed on the back of your AAA membership card. Simply show your valid AAA Membership card to your pharmacist whenever you need a prescription refilled. Q: What can I expect to save? A: Members are currently receiving an average discount of approximately 24 percent off regular retail prices. The savings amount is not guaranteed. The price paid depends on the pharmacy, the type and quantity of drug purchased and when the drug is purchased. Pharmacies, just like other retail stores, compete against each other and may have special prices on some products. Q: Will I always save 24 percent? A: No. The 24 percent refers to the average savings percentage achieved by members who have used the program. You can save more or less than 24 percent depending on the medication and pharmacy. Q: Will I save at every pharmacy? A: No. Discounts are only available at participating pharmacies. Currently there are over 60,000 locations nationwide. Visit AAA.com/prescriptions for participating locations. Q: Can I expect to always save using my discount card? A: The program is designed to provide savings off full retail price. If your pharmacy offers a special low price on a drug that is lower than the program’s discounted price, you will pay the pharmacy’s special price. When this is the case, we cannot discount the pharmacy’s already low price, but you will receive the advantage of the pharmacy’s special pricing. (Please Note: It is intended that AAA members always receive the lower of the program’s contracted price or the pharmacy’s price.) Q: Is there a mail order option? A: Yes, you can get up to a three-month supply of medication shipped right to your home or location of your choice. Members will receive the best price by purchasing through mail order. To get started, call 1-866-AAA-SAVE (866-222-7283). Q: Can I use my AAA Prescription Savings Card on pet medications? A: Yes. Just ask your veterinarian to write a prescription you can fill at a participating pharmacy or through mail service. Q: What types of pet medications are covered? A: Many drugs used by humans are also used to treat pets with such common conditions as diabetes, arthritis, and infections. Heartworm or flea/tick prevention medications are not covered.

Cruise Line Suites Keep Getting Sweeter and Balconies Better Continued from page 1 Some favorite balconies

Celebrity Cruises’ Solstice, Constellation and Century-class ships offer the best standard balconies. They are the industry standard 42 square feet in size, but the tables are large enough to hold breakfast (or lunch or dinner) dishes for two persons. Royal Caribbean’s Oasis and Allure of the Seas offer some of the best family cabins. Balconies on the AquaTheatre Suites come with views ranging from the festive Boardwalk neighborhood to the best seats to watch nighttime performances of the AquaTheatre, a hydraulics-laden pool with 2,000 water nozzles. It’s a terrific show that includes high divers and gymnasts on trampolines. They are not inexpensive, but suites sleep eight and the spacious 600-800 square-foot balconies can accommodate everyone at once. The cabins with some of the the best views are the aft cabins on several cruise lines, including Carnival, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Princess. These cabins face backwards, over-looking the ship’s wake and offer Zen-like tranquility. In fact, many cruisers rave about the ability to meditate on the foamy wake as it stretches out into

R

infinity behind the ship. The cabins are also deeper than the usual and the balconies come with upgraded furnishings, such as full-length chaise lounges. Oceania Marina & Riviera Owners’ Suites are probably one of your best bets for a splurge cabin. These suites offer balconies larger than most cabins. You can actually live outside--amenities include full-length, padded lounge chairs; large dining table; and whirlpool with flat-screen TV. Because the balconies wrap around the aft, there are 180-degree views. Interiors are furnished by Ralph Lauren Home and come complete with a large living and dining room, plus foyer and an ebony piano. Best views of the moon and stars are from the mini-suites on Princess Cruises’ Grand Class Suites. These balconies jut out from the ship without a protective overhang for privacy, but they do offer some benefits--they are wide and deep and large enough for recliners and a full dining set-up. Some cruisers bring their own beach umbrellas to thwart prying eyes from above. But at night, when everyone else is pursuing indoor activities, there’s plenty of G INTRODUCIN privacy and stars. R

Corner Aft cabins sell out fast. They are standard accommodations on many ships; their balconies wrap around the stern. With the L-shape come unobstructed views of the ship’s wake plus the bonus of any port or starboard-side scenery. They are particularly in demand on Alaska cruises. Holland America’s 1,300-squarefoot Penthouse Veranda Suites have balconies with Hot Tubs. The Royal Suites on Celebrity Cruises’ Milleniumand Solstice-class ships also come with roomy, whirlpool-topped balconies. These can run from $1,100 to $3,000 a night. But not all these suites are expensive, actually. Norwegian Sky’s forward-facing Owner’s Suite starts at just $450 per person, per night on a three- or four-night Bahamas sailing out of Miami.

The suite life

“You could get used to this,” is how Royal Caribbean markets its new Concierge Suites. “Luxury, comfort, a view you won’t believe.” They are correct; there really are no other accommodations at sea quite like them. Staying in a B&B allows you to experience a true welcome into a real family home, sample the best Irish breakfast and savor possibly the best home baking and cooking you’ll ever have. B&B owners are amazing people with great hearts, good advice and a supreme dedication to meeting your needs. CIE offers self-drive homestay B&B vacations of 6 days/6 nights or longer, featuring town, farm country and historic homes. There are over 1,000 of them located throughout Ireland. You have the freedom to decide where to stay and you can choose from a variety of different urban, countryside and farm locations. The program includes a Hertz self-drive car, with unlimited mileage, for the duration of your vacation. These Go-AsYou-Please vacations are a great affordable option to experience authentic Ireland with 6-day/6-night packages starting at just $363 per person in the winter. You choose from a wide range of hotels and travel on any dates you wish. Hotels vary from modern resorts, small friendly Irish Country Hotels, elegant Manor House Hotels to luxurious castle properties. Your CIE driver looks after you every step of the way. All are fully experienced and familiar with Ireland’s attractions. Many have worked as guides and are able to make suggestions as to routes and recommended visits. They will also provide informational commentary on various aspects of life in Ireland and on places along the route as you roll along.

Teens Delaying Licensure — A Cause for Concern? AAA Foundation Study Looks at Why Teens Are Delaying Rite of Passage Peter Kissinger, President and CEO, AAA

T

Foundation for Traffic Safety. “For most, it’s about not having a car or having alternatives for getting around that are the top reasons cited for delaying what has traditionally been considered to be a rite of passage.” Contrary to some expectations, survey results suggest that few teens wait until 18 simply to avoid graduated driver licensing. Instead, a number of other reasons for delaying licensure were cited, including: • 44 percent – Did not have a car • 39 percent – Could get around without driving • 36 percent – Gas was too expensive • 36 percent – Driving was too expensive • 35 percent – “Just didn’t get around to it” Low-income and minority teens are the least likely to obtain a driver’s license

he majority of American teens today delay getting a driver’s license, according to new study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Less than half (44 percent) of teens obtain a driver’s license within 12 months of the minimum age for licensing in their state and just over half (54 percent) are licensed before their 18th birthday, causing concern among safety experts that young adult drivers are missing the benefits intended by graduated drivers licensing (GDL). These findings mark a significant drop from two decades ago when data showed more than twothirds of teens were licensed by the time they turned 18. “With one in three teens waiting to get their license until they turn 18, there’s a segment of this generation missing opportunities to learn under the safeguards that GDL provides,” said

before age 18. Only 25 percent of teens living in households with incomes less than $20,000 obtained their license before they turned 18, while 79 percent of teens were licensed by their eighteenth birthday in households with incomes of $100,000 or more. The findings for licensure by age 18 differed significantly by race and ethnicity, with 67 percent for non-Hispanic white teens, 37 percent for non-Hispanic black teens, and 29 percent for Hispanic teens. adopt and enforce a comprehensive three-stage (learner’s permit, intermediate/probationary license, full/ unrestricted license) graduated driver licensing (GDL) system for novice teen drivers. These programs require minimum holding periods and practice requirements for teens with learner’s permits, followed by restricted licenses that limit driving at night or with peer passengers. These requirements help novice drivers safely gain the skills and experience needed to become safe adult drivers. Previous AAA Foundation research found that states with comprehensive GDL systems have experienced a 38 percent decrease in fatal crashes involving 16 year-olds and a 40 percent reduction in injury crashes. Since traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, making sure new drivers have a foundation in basic driving skills is critical to their safety behind the wheel. To help your family prepare for the learning to drive process, AAA offers the popular Dare to Prepare pre-permit program for you and your teen. The free 90-minute workshop is not intended to replace driver’s education or even to substantially overlap such a course. Instead, it is a supplementary program designed to facilitate early discussion of driving safety issues and to be delivered before teens receive their learner’s permit. Dare to Prepare focuses on concepts and messages that a teen may not normally receive during a traditional driver education course, such as: driving is a privilege; Pennsylvania’s graduated driver licensing law; teen crash statistics; insurance coverage; and parent-teen driving agreements. The program is intended to increase teens’total exposure to traffic safety messaging throughout their career as developing drivers.

Insuring Your Home - The Importance of Replacement Cost vs. Market Value

N

o one is immune to the threat of losing their home due to any number of possible hazards. A recent survey found that most homeowners are seriously underinsured. Marshall & Swift/Boekch (MSB), a leading insurance data services company, found that 66 percent of homeowners had inadequate coverage by an average of 18 percent. That works out to $36,000 for a typical $200,000 home. While few people would willingly choose a policy with a $36,000 deductible, that is the net result of being underinsured. The market value of what your home would sell for is very different from the replacement cost coverage to properly insure the rebuilding of a home. Market value takes into consideration the land value, depreciation and other market factors while the replacement cost simply reflects the cost to rebuild a home. For example, identical homes in two different neighborhoods could have a significant difference in market value, but actually replacing those homes - rebuilding them in place using similar construction methods and materials - would essentially cost the same for both.

Reviewing the features of your home with your agent is very important, as homes with features such as crown molding, hardwood floors and tile cost more to rebuild. The quality of kitchens and bathrooms add significantly to rebuilding costs. These and other factors, including total square footage, determine the home’s replacement cost. This is the amount you should insure your house for; sometimes referred to as “Coverage A” in your homeowner’s policy. Separate structures or “Coverage B”, refers to any structure that is on your property but not attached to your main house. Examples of separate structures include: • Detached garage • Fence • Garden shed • Detached in-law unit • Retaining walls • Swimming pool • Outdoor kitchen Most homeowner policies automatically include separate Coverage B coverages that equal 10 percent of the amount of insurance on the main house (Coverage A). If the number and value of separate structures are

Your homeowner’s policy will automatically include personal property coverage known as “Coverage C” that can equal 50 percent to 75 percent of the Coverage A amount. If you have higher value items, discuss an additional amount of coverage with your agent. Jewelry, guns, coins and computers, typically have policy sub-
