A great member experience across every platform New and enhanced services expand AAA’s digital footprint
I
n an era when every new piece of technology promises a magical new future, AAA has opted for a more practical approach. Virtual and mobile platforms aren’t just the flavor of the month, but a means to extend AAA products and services to a mobile and tech-savvy audience. “Integration with the newest platforms enables AAA to deliver a great member experience with timely, accurate information across the entire consumer technology space,” notes Jim Lehman, president AAA East Central, “whether a member uses a desktop or notebook computer, a smartphone, a tablet or wearable technology.” AAA’s new Apple Watch functionality puts consumers in charge of their time and helps them make decisions on how much they spend on fuel. Apple Watch owners can also find the fastest route to nearby stations. AAA Gas Price functionality for Apple Watch searches gas station pricing within a multi-mile radius of the user. It then shows the options the user selected — fastest or cheapest. The fastest gas station is determined by reviewing detailed turn-by-turn directions of the eight closest stations and layering traffic information to compute drive times. Navigation to the stations is routed through Apple Maps. Users can also configure the app to select the price for the type of fuel they use. Be sure to program the watch before driving, then follow Apple Watch’s

AAA’s TripTik Planner at AAA.com provides unprecedented access to AAA travel resources in multiple formats and across all devices. Users will notice a new look in the system’s tab and tool selections. The changes are designed to streamline access to core features and present a more fluid and responsive layout for all desktop and mobile screen sizes. Along with TripTik maps, directions and Drive Trips, AAA’s all-in-one platform for trip-planning resources, will also become a portal for locationbased content when a user maps, or explores a destination. Members can easily access AAA Road Service Online, from their PC or tablet device by clicking on the Road Service Online link at AAA.com. You’ll be guided through the online request process, and requests made online go directly to the dispatcher, so the time it takes to request service online can be considerably shorter than by phone. This is particularly true during severe weather when call volume can be heavy. Visit AAA.com the next time you need roadside assistance. While technology offers a seemingly endless capacity to enhance our motoring and travel lives, AAA reminds motorists that safety is always the number one priority. No application or device should be used in a manner that will distract drivers from their primary responsibility of driving safely and without distractions.

membersonly AAA Member Rewards Visa® now with microchip technology Make your travels safe and secure with AAA
A
AA members enjoy added convenience and security when traveling abroad when they use a AAA “chip” credit card and take advantage of AAA’s foreign currency program. While abroad, many travelers encounter merchants that won’t accept their traditional credit or debit cards. That’s because in the United States, credit card transactions are processed primarily by card readers that read the magnetic stripe on the back of the credit card. In Europe and many other countries, credit card transactions are processed primarily by card readers that read an embedded microchip on the card. The chip makes transactions more secure and as a result this technology has been widely adopted. The good news for AAA members is that AAA credit cards are available with chip technology. If you already have a AAA credit card you can call the number of the back of your card to request a chip card. If you’re not
a AAA cardholder, visit your local branch office or aaa.com/creditcard to learn about the many benefits of carrying a AAA credit card. Here are a few key things you need to know about chip cards before you travel: Chip cards come in two types: ‘Chip & PIN’ and ‘Chip & Signature.’ With Chip & PIN, the cardholder enters a 4-digit PIN to complete each transaction. With Chip & Signature, the cardholder simply signs for the transaction. AAA credit cards with chip technology are Chip & Signature cards. Most of Europe and a number of other countries prefer Chip & PIN technology, while most issuers in the US are offering Chip & Signature technology. Therefore, when traveling abroad with a chip card issued by a bank in the United States, including your AAA credit card, you may need to let the merchant know that you’ll be signing for your transaction rather than entering a PIN.
In addition, be sure to carry some cash in the local currency since US-issued chip cards cannot be used in unattended terminals and kiosks in countries that issue Chip & PIN cards. That way you’ll be ready to grab a quick bite to eat or pay for ground transportation upon arrival. By purchasing foreign currency before you leave you also save on service fees. Many AAA offices provide foreign currency services, including buying back your leftover currency after the trip. So relax, have a great trip, and enjoy the added security and peace of mind that comes with your AAA membership.
Safe, convenient & rewarding With the AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card, you are never alone. There is someone to assist you with any matter regarding your account 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For information about the card or to apply, call 866-665-3581 or visit AAA.com/creditcard.

Keeping the roof over your head Proper maintenance can help you avoid expensive repairs By Robin Jones hen a big storm blows into town, are you holding your breath, wondering if your roof will leak? While rain falls outside, do you kick yourself for not having hired that contractor to inspect your roof? If so, you’re not alone. Too many homeowners discover that their roof needs repairs only after it starts to leak. Then, if the leak causes serious water damage, there’s a chance their insurance may not cover repairs. The best way to avoid expensive repairs resulting from a leaky roof is to perform regular preventive maintenance and replace your roof when damage or age dictates it’s time. Here are a few maintenance tips, along with some guidelines for choosing a contractor: Check your roof for signs of wear annually. From the ground, take a detailed look at your roof with a pair of binoculars. Are any shingles torn, loose, or missing? If so, you may need to hire someone to secure or replace them. Is there any sign of other damage? Often the first place a roof shows its age is in the shingles that cap the roof peaks. Replacing these will cost far less than a whole new roof and can give your roof up to five more years of life. Inspect the gutters. Clear out debris that’s stuck in the gutter system. Leaves, twigs, and other waste can stop water
W
UP ON THE ROOF — Homeowners often discover a roof problem only after a leak. from draining properly, which can lead to water damage to your roof, walls, and ceiling. What’s more, heavy mounds of debris can cause gutters to sag and even fall down. Trim tree limbs so that the leaves and branches can’t fall on your roof and cause damage. Look for other signs your roof might need replacing. If you can clearly see a leak stain on the ceiling inside your
home, if shingle granules start to show up in your roof gutters or fall onto the driveway, or if it looks as if your roof is sagging or dipping, you probably have a problem. Call a contractor and schedule a roof inspection as soon as possible to ward off further damage. Replace it on time. Most roofing types are designed to last an average of 15 years, but certain types can last
as long as 25 years. Also, roof warranties can vary widely depending on the materials used. Maintain records detailing when your roof was installed and what the warranty protects so you’ll know when it’s time to replace it. Putting on a new roof increases your home’s value, and you might also get a discount on your insurance. Check their credentials. Before you sign a contract or hand over any money, ask your roofer for proof that he or she is licensed and carries general liability and worker’s comp insurance. Then ask for referrals, and check them. You want to hire someone with a solid reputation and many years of experience in the trade. Get it in writing. A good contractor will provide you with a written estimate on the cost of the roof repair and how long it will take. If your roofer can’t (or won’t) give you a contract, or if he asks you for more than half of the price upfront, you’re probably better off finding someone else. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Chill out on a hot beach in the Caribbean!
There’s a lot not to like about COLD. The snow, ice and wind of winter...and almost everyone has, had or is catching a COLD. But there’s at least one thing to love about COLD — AAA Travel’s “cold” remedy of limited-time savings & gifts for 5-night-or-longer 2016 vacations at Caribbean properties available through our preferred travel partner Pleasant Holidays. Just book with deposit Jan 4-30, 2016. Escape the cold with up to $100 in savings...and a pair of attractive heavyweight cotton velour AAA Travel beach towels, which you can spread out on the silky white sands in front of your resort. Choose a property that comfortably suits your vacation budget and travel style from the scores available on practically every Caribbean island. Will you be traveling as a couple...a family with children...a group of friends and/or relatives? Do you prefer the value and conveniences of an all-inclusive resort or the comforts of a more traditional hotel setting? Will you stay on-site all during your stay or include off-site touring and sightseeing as part of your experience? Whatever your answers, there are resorts to fit your needs. All-inclusive resorts provide the best of both worlds — value and convenience. One price covers nearly everything — all meals & drinks (including alcoholic beverages), nonmotorized water sports, daily activities for adults & children, nightly entertainment and tips & hotel taxes. Additional all-inclusive indulgences include on-site gourmet
No passport? No problem! Don’t have a passport and/or the time necessary to get one? Don’t fret. US citizens can travel without one to several American territories in the Caribbean. All you need is a valid government-issued ID (driver license) and a certified copy of a state-issued birth certificate. And you’ll feel at home because English is widely spoken, and US dollars are the official currency. PUERTO RICO. Capital city San Juan boasts a charming historic district with pastel-hued houses and imposing fortifications. Stretches of enticing beaches lined with hotels and resorts both contemporary and old-style abound. Explore El Yunque, the rain forest of the interior, or embrace local culture & cuisine in villages all over the island. ST THOMAS, US VIRGIN ISLANDS. The most populous and most popular of the US Virgin Islands, St Thomas offers the vibrancy of Charlotte Amalie, which brims with duty-free shopping, historic & cultural landmarks and friendly locals. The rest of the island retains a secluded sense of Caribbean paradise, with glorious beaches. ST JOHN, US VIRGIN ISLANDS. Two-thirds of St John is a national park. Its comfortable pace
is perfect for enjoying the island’s world-renowned beaches such as Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay and Salt Pond Bay. A nature lover’s favorite, St John offers hiking, camping, specialty shopping and breathtaking views.
ST CROIX, US VIRGIN ISLANDS. St Croix’s Danish influence is perfect for visitors who prefer
a laid-back experience. Historic Frederiksted and Christiansted offer quaint shops, charming pastel buildings and refreshing cultural diversity. From horseback riding to playing golf on 3 scenic courses, you’ll find something to suit your tastes.

Distractions linger long after hands-free tasks end New technologies can pose hidden dangers for drivers
P
otentially unsafe mental distractions can persist for as long as 27 seconds after dialing, changing music or sending a text using voice commands, according to surprising new research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. These lingering distractions are referred to as “residual costs” and the results raise new and unexpected concerns regarding the use of phones and vehicle information systems while driving. “These residual costs are notable,” says David Strayer, the University of Utah psychology professor who led the study. “At 25 mph, a vehicle would travel up to 988 feet — the approximate length of three football fields — before the residual costs completely dissipate. These findings have implications for people who think it’s safe to dial or send a text message at a stoplight, because the distractions from these interactions are likely to persist after the light turns green.” In prior research, Strayer’s team established a five-point scale to assess distraction levels resulting from activities such as listening to the radio (Category 1); sending voice-activated texts from an error-free system (Category 3), a set of complicated math-memory problems was used to establish the top end of the scale (Category 5). The latest study, completed in
MEASURING THE RISK — Researchers introduce participants to devices designed to gauge mental distraction. October, analyzed distraction levels caused by using voice-controlled information systems available in 10 vehicles and three smartphones. Sensors and video recorded the participants’ reaction times to potential hazards as they used hands-free systems to place calls, change radio stations and use the smartphones’ voice-texting features while driving in a residential neighborhood. The systems that performed best generally had fewer errors, required less
prior research, AAA considers distractions at Category 2 or higher to be unsafe, and none of these systems met this threshold. The researchers also determined that in-vehicle systems placed greater mental demands on older drivers than on younger drivers. Even after familiarizing themselves with their vehicles’ information systems, participants showed only marginal improvement in driving performance, leading researchers to conclude that such distractions “cannot be practiced away.” “The lasting effects of mental distraction pose a hidden and pervasive danger that would likely come as a surprise to most drivers,” said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “The results indicate that motorists could miss stop signs, pedestrians and other vehicles while the mind is readjusting to the task of driving.”
time on task and were relatively easy to use. Among the vehicles, the Chevy Equinox had the lowest, or best, distraction rating (2.4), while the Mazda 6 (4.6) had the highest, or worst, rating. Of the smartphone systems, Google Now performed best (3.0), followed by Apple Siri (3.4) and Microsoft Cortana (3.8), and using the latter three systems to send text messages significantly increased distraction levels. When it’s cold your car needs extra care Don’t wait to get your car ready for winter
W
ith more than 31-million calls for AAA roadside assistance recorded in the first 11 months of 2015, AAA knows that vehicles require regular maintenance to maximize safety and efficiency especially during the winter. A summer inconvenience can become a winter hazard that strands you in the cold—possibly putting your life at risk. Wiper blades typically last from 6 months to a year. Replace any wiper blades that are “chattering,” or leave streaks or miss spots. Consider installing winter wiper blades or “beam” blades in areas of heavy snow. Winter wiper blades wrap the blade in a rubber boot that prevents ice and snow buildup that can inhibit contact between the blade and glass. Beam blades’ frameless design conforms to the shape of your windshield and the design helps resist snow and ice buildup for improved allweather performance. Keep your windshield washer fluid reservoir filled with a winter cleaning solution. All-season tires will work well in light to moderate snow conditions, providing they have adequate tread depth. In areas with heavy winter weather, using winter tires on all four wheels offers the best winter traction. If any tire has less than 3/32-inches of tread, it should be replaced.
POWER SHORTAGE — Battery problems are the number one reason for AAA Roadside Assistance calls during winter months. As the temperature starts to drop, so will the pressures in your tires—typically 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The proper tire pressure levels can be found in your owner’s manual, or on a sticker located on the driver’s side doorjamb. And don’t forget to check the spare.
Coolant leaks are more common when temperatures plunge because metal engine parts contract during cold weather, and hose clamps aren’t as tight and they should be. While your coolant never loses its antifreeze capability, the additives that lubricate the water pump and protect internal engine com-
ponents from rust, scale and corrosion become depleted over time. Motorists should have the cooling system flushed and filled when recommended by the manufacturer. Some newer coolant formulations can last for up to 5 years or 150,000 miles. A strong, healthy battery is an absolute necessity in winter. Your vehicle’s battery loses approximately 35 percent of its efficiency when the temperature dips below freezing and it goes down, down, down from there. First take a look at the connections and cables to make sure they’re tight and corrosionfree. If you suspect your battery is failing a qualified technician like those from AAA’s Mobile Battery Service can determine the condition of the battery. AAA Mobile Battery Service offers fast, accurate and convenient mobile battery testing and replacement. If a new battery is needed, you can have one installed right on the spot. AAA Battery Service vehicles carry batteries compatible with 90 percent of all cars, SUVs and light trucks on the road.

Celebrity is making waves around the Caribbean Cruise line adds more overnights to Caribbean sailings
W
ith more overnights in the Caribbean than any other cruise line Celebrity Cruises offers travelers the chance to live like a local before setting sail. The popularity of Celebrity’s overnight program has led to 43 newly enhanced itineraries, giving guests the chance to enjoy exotic evenings in destinations like Cartagena, Colombia; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Cozumel, Mexico; Aruba; Curacao and Barbados. Celebrity Cruises is also bringing more of the Caribbean to vacationers with “Evenings Around the World” shore excursions, featuring 14 new, unique experiences that begin after the sun goes down. These special excursions perfectly complement the recently announced overnight stays on over 40 Caribbean sailings departing January 2016 and beyond — more than any other cruise line. The 14-night Exotic Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Celebrity Eclipse, departs from Miami and calls in at Willemstad, Curaçao; Kralendijk, Bonaire; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; Basseterre, St. Kitts; Philipsburg, St. Maarten, with an overnight in Oranjestad, Aruba. License plates on Aruba bear the slogan “One Happy Island” and it shows. Located 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela, days are filled with sunshine and the beaches curve like brilliant,

Nowhere is Aruba’s Dutch heritage more apparent than in the capital of Oranjestad. Pastel-colored houses combine carved wooden doors and traditional Dutch tiles with airy open galleries and sloping, Caribbean-style roofs.
De Oude Molen or the Old Dutch Windmill is one of Oranjestad’s most recognizable landmarks. Constructed in 1804, the windmill was disassembled and brought over piece by piece from Holland. In the evening, you can check out the casinos, local rum shops or clubs for Aruban hospitality and tumba — the irresistible home-grown music.
Restaurants serve international cuisine and Aruban specialties like stob (lamb or goat stew), and sopi di pisca (fish chowder). Celebrity’s Caribbean Evenings Around the World program offers guests a curated menu of evening experiences that go beyond the port, expose travelers to the true soul of the Caribbean, and provide experiences that can’t be captured on a postcard. Genuinely Caribbean excursions include evening jazz, bonfires and exclusive boat parties in Cozumel, Mexico; an exclusive wine tasting at the Caribbean’s first winery in Willemstad, Curacao; drifting along Aruba’s picturesque coastline, to live Caribbean music, on a special sunset cruise; and nighttime, horse-drawn carriage tours along winding cobblestone streets, past historical colonial mansions in Cartagena, Colombia. More time in port means more time to explore, and Celebrity now offer more overnights, more excursions and more of the Caribbean than any other cruise line. Vacationers can go beyond the ordinary to capture firsthand what makes each island truly special. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Study your options for travel insurance What student travelers and parents need to know
A
new year means a new semester for the college student in your life. Chances are, at some point, your son, daughter or relative may have the option of traveling and studying abroad. Whether they’re planning to visit for a week over spring break or are diving into the culture and lifestyle of a new country for a semester or more, international travel offers an immersive and unique opportunity for students. But, the same opportunity can leave with an anxiety-inducing prospect. Before the process becomes too overwhelming, there are some steps you can take to ensure everyone’s peace of mind. For spring breakers headed abroad, making sure all the essentials are covered is integral. A short trip overseas requires at least a passport. Longer stays, depending on the country may also require a visa. Be sure to allow enough time—roughly four to six weeks—for the application to be processed. As part of the passport application, several other documents are needed to fulfill the request. A copy of their birth certificate, a photocopy of a valid driver’s license and two passport photos, along with the application form and fee must be submitted for processing. Many local AAA branches offer a passport photo service available

informed through alerts and messages to travelers and their loved ones about travel concerns in other countries. U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad are able to register their trips with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, for free, as well. Remember to make insurance arrangements, as well. Not all health insurance policies cover medical care
abroad, and those that do often have stipulations regarding the types of issues covered and rarely cover medical evacuations. Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance covers the unexpected for you and your loved ones while overseas. With a travel insurance policy, your travel investment is protected if the trip needs to be cancelled due to illness or injury, flight delays or bad weather. You’re even protected while away. Travel insurance goes beyond borders, where your domestic medical insurance or Medicare may not cover. Depending on your destination, the cost of health care, hospitalization and emergency medical evacuation can be prohibitive. Allianz Global Assistance offers several different packages to meet your vacation needs. A AAA travel agent can assist you in choosing the right package, no matter where you have made your travel arrangements.

Wilderness, wildlife, wonder and more The National Park Service turns 100 this year
T
he National Park Service turns 100 this year, and everyone can take part in the celebration. The Centennial is more than a birthday. It will kick off a second century of stewardship by engaging communities through recreation, conservation, and historic preservation programs. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation to create the National Park Service, which preserves and protects 408 sites throughout the country. Each one, whether it’s a national park, a monument, historic site or a national seashore, was established to protect, preserve and share its national significance for future generations. Some, like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite conserve magnificent landscapes and natural wonders. Others, like the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania commemorate people and events. Chicago’s newly designated Pullman Historic District, marks the birthplace of the first AfricanAmerican labor union. Parks like Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley National Park offer easy access to major cities, while others are extremely remote. Kobuk Valley, located high in the Arctic Circle, is accessible only by dogsled, snowmobile, or on foot. The largest — Alaska’s Wrangel-St. Elias National Park and Preserve — unravels over 13 million acres and is

At just 0.02 acres Philadelphia’s Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial is the smallest, honoring the Polish American hero of the Revolutionary War. America’s national parks are home to Denali, the highest point in North America at 20,322 feet, and Death Valley, the lowest (also the hottest and driest) at 282-feet below sea level.
There are 35 parks named after presidents, and one that celebrates four of them. Mount Rushmore National Memorial, established in 1925, features 60-foot tall sculptures of Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln, but somehow ended up being named after Charles Rushmore, a New York attorney. The Roosevelt Campobello International Park is actu-
ally located in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Some of the oldest trees on earth live on the craggy mountain slopes of Nevada’s Great Basin National Park. The rare Great Basin bristlecone pine can survive for 4,000 years or more under extremely harsh conditions. Mammoth Cave National Park is the world’s longest cave system, with more than 365 miles explored. Located in the Green River valley in south central Kentucky, cave tours have been offered since 1816, making Mammoth Cave one of North America’s oldest tourist attractions. A national park can be many different things to many different people and the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation encourage you to connect with and celebrate our national parks this year with their Find Your Park campaign. Whether you’re a regular visitor, or a virtual explorer, take time to experience, explore, learn, be inspired, or just relax in America’s national parks, which will continue to amaze and delight visitors for the next 100 years.

mber Cove is an exotic new cruise destination in the heart of the Dominican Republic’s breathtaking North Coast. The port re-opens the spectacular Puerto Plata region to regular cruise ship visits for the first time in nearly 30 years. The $85 million, 25-acre complex welcomed its first cruise ship last October, when Carnival Victory arrived for a day long call. Carnival Corporation brands scheduled to call on Amber Cove include Cunard, Holland America Line, and Princess Cruises. It will be a featured port on select sailings from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Port Canaveral, Florida, and Charleston, South Carolina. Amber Cove’ dramatic architectural elements echo the region’s storied colonial past. Set against a backdrop of soaring mountains and lush tropical foliage, cobblestone plazas feature a marketplace for Dominican crafts, and a variety of restaurants and taverns. Some serve Dominican specialty dishes and an artisanal coffee shop brews and sells locally grown coffee. The Sky Bar perched atop a 60-foot hill, offers expansive views of the port and cove. Other highlights include a sprawling pool area with a swim-up bar, water slides, zip lines and private cabanas built over the water. Amber Cove is located just outside the historic town of Puerto Plata. When
AMBER WAVES — The Amber Coast is considered the Dominican Republic’s most versatile playground. Columbus sailed into the harbor in 1492, the sun’s reflection turned the water silver, so he named it Puerto Plata, or port of silver. Today, historic Fortaleza San Felipe still stands watch over the entrance to the harbor. The thick walled Spanish fortress was constructed in the mid-16th century to
defend the city against pirates. Take a quiet stroll along the Malecón, a threemile-long boardwalk overlooking the Atlantic, or enjoy a cigar and Presidente beer in an outdoor café. Visitors can also hop onboard a cable car for a spectacular ride to the top of Mt. Isabel de Torres.
This region is considered the Dominican Republic’s most versatile playground and Amber Cove features one of the Caribbean’s most extensive shore excursion programs, with more than 40 landside experiences including beautiful beaches, and special culinary, cultural and adventure options. Nearby Ocean World — one of the Caribbean’s largest marine parks — offers visitors a variety of ways to experience and interact with sea life. Guests can ride a speedboat to beautiful Paradise Island, one of the Caribbean’s top spots for snorkeling and scuba diving, or visit rural coffee plantations and sample traditional Dominican cuisine like “tostones” — fried slices of green plantain, or sancocho, the traditional Dominican soup. The name Amber Coast comes from the rich deposits of amber, a prized gemstone created from fossilized tree resin. Dominican amber is nearly always transparent, and it has a higher number of fossil inclusions. Fans of the movie “Jurassic Park” can visit the Amber Museum in Puerto Plata to see a prehistoric mosquito trapped in amber that was featured in the film. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Don’t let frozen water pipes leave you in the cold Foam, dome, or drip to keep old man winter away
A
winter vacation is a great way to “get away from it all.” Unfortunately, some travelers will return home to find “it’s all” been destroyed. When temperatures dip below freezing one of the most serious threats to your home can be frozen water pipes. According to the American Insurance Association, cold weather damage will cost insurance companies about $1.4 billion in claims this year. When water freezes in a pipe it expands and can exert pressure up to 2,000 pounds per square inch. This pressure is enough to rupture almost any pipe filled with water. Even a tiny 1/8” crack in a pipe can unleash 250 gallons of water per day, which will result in major flooding and structural damage and put the property at risk for mould damage. Damage from frozen pipes is the second most common cause of insurance claims in America, and the average homeowner will have to spend thousands to repair damage from frozen, leaking pipes. If you turn on your faucet and no water comes out, the pipe is probably frozen. You may be able to thaw the pipe yourself with a hair dryer. Open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach pipes under sinks or appliances near
THAWING OUT— About a quarter million families deal with frozen water pipes each winter. exterior walls. Start warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest part of the pipe. Never try to thaw pipe with a torch or open flame.
Families can protect themselves from this costly damage in advance using a technique called foam, dome or drip. Foam — Insulate pipes exposed to the elements or cold drafts. For as little
as $1 per 6’ of insulation, you can stop pipes from freezing and save energy. Dome — Placing an insulating dome or other coverings on outdoor faucets and spigots also reduce the likelihood of the water in your home’s pipes freezing, expanding and causing a costly leak. You can purchase this type of dome at your local home improvement store for about $1. Make sure you disconnect garden hoses and shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets Drip — Drip your faucets to reduce the build-up of pressure in the pipes. Even if the pipes freeze, you have released the pressure from the water system reducing the likelihood of a rupture. Set the thermostat at 55 degrees if you’re going out of town. This setting is considered safe for pipes. If you suspect the temperatures will drop below freezing, turn off the water to your home and open all of the taps to drain the water system. This way, a loss of power during a winter storm won’t cause pipes to freeze, or you to return to a frozen, soggy mess. If you’re going out of town, have a trusted friend or neighbor come over and check your house regularly and tell them who to contact in case of an emergency.
Child passenger safety — Separating fact from fiction Debunking five common myths about car seats
I
t’s no secret that driving with small children can be full of challenges — from battles over whose turn it is to pick the music to making sure you’re fully stocked with snacks and supplies. But one thing that should not be up for debate is how to keep them safe. The proper use of car seats and booster seats can help prevent many child injuries and deaths, yet an alarming three out of four are not installed properly. That’s why Buckle Up for Life, collaboration between Toyota and Cincinnati Children’s, is sharing the top five myths about car seats — and the real facts behind them — to help better protect young passengers. Myth: Used car seats are always okay. Fact: Car seats have expiration dates. Hand-me-downs may be convenient, but when it comes to car seats, they’re not worth the risk. If the seat has been through a crash, it may be compromised. Additionally, the plastic can degrade over time. If you do have a used car seat, know its history and check the expiration date, which can usually be found on a sticker affixed to the seat and on the registration card. Myth: Older kids can sit in the front seat. Fact: Kids under 13 are safest in the back. Many think that once their children outgrow their car seats or booster seats, the front seat is fair game. However, the
study by the University of Virginia, children under age two are 75 percent less likely to die or to be severely injured in a crash if they are rear-facing. Myth: Expensive car seats are safer than others. Fact: All approved car seats are equally safe. All car seat manufacturers are required to meet the same performance standards issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some seats may be more expensive than others based on fabric, padding or other bells and whistles, but that doesn’t mean they are any safer.
PLEASE BE SEATED — Child passenger restraints can dramatically reduce the odds of injury in a crash. truth is that all children under age 13 are safest in the back seat. Myth: Seat belts alone protect small children. Fact: Children shorter than 4’9” need booster seats. Seat belts don’t properly fit young children and can ride up around their waists or necks, potentially causing injury during a crash. Children under 4’9” should sit in booster seats, which
elevate them so that seat belts can protect them correctly. Myth: A one year old can ride in a forward-facing car seat. Fact: Children should be rear-facing until age two. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children should remain in rear-facing car seats until age two, or until they exceed the height or weight limit for the car seat. According to a
