Seniors need to safeguard their assets from fraudsters Steps you can take to protect your nest egg

or many Americans, it’s hard to eke out a living and secure a nest egg for retirement. Fortunately, there are plenty of financial experts offering advice on how to save for the “golden years.” But that’s definitely not the case when it comes to skilled professionals with solutions on how to safeguard your life savings from identity theft. If you are retired or are close to retirement, protecting your nest egg from identity thieves is more vital today than ever, as is becoming aware of the different scams fraudsters use to separate you from your money. Here are some steps to preserve your investments: If you get a call from someone you don’t know to donate funds to a surefire investment opportunity, hang up the phone. A legitimate financial institution won’t just call you out of the blue with a windfall opportunity. Find a secure place to store Social Security numbers and medical information. Carry only necessary information in your wallet. If you get checks in the mail, such as Social Security, arrange to have them deposited directly into your bank account. Identity thieves are known to watch seniors’ mailboxes. Love your family members, but be aware that the majority of identity theft against seniors can be attributed to friends, family members or caretakers. Credit reports and credit statements are often the first places evidence of fraud shows up. If you only look at your reports once a year for free, you may miss warning signs, and identity theft could go unchecked for months. A nice surprise — Life insurance may cost less than you think There are ways to make life insurance more affordable By Robin Jones hen Mike Richards found out that his wife, Linda, was having twins, he figured it was time to buy some life insurance. He wanted to ensure his family’s financial security and know that his mortgage and kids’ college tuition would be covered if something were to happen to him. And he understood that he had to jump on it. “I knew the longer I waited, the more expensive it would be,” he says. But his policy cost less than he expected. “I was really surprised it wasn’t higher,” he says. His experience is common. Yet many people don’t purchase life insurance because they worry about the cost. Worldwide research and consulting company LIMRA recently found that 85 percent of people who didn’t have life insurance chose not to buy it because they thought it’d be too expensive. Seventy-eight percent of those who already had some life insurance didn’t buy more for the same reason. But LIMRA also found that the average cost of a 20-year $250,000 term life insurance policy for a healthy 30-yearold was $400 per year. That’s about $33 per month, less than most 30-year-olds spend on one dinner out with friends. Here are a few ways to make life insurance even more affordable. Buy early — Age is probably the most important factor in determining cost. Youth is generally an advantage. For

So it’s best to buy coverage as soon as someone depends on your income, whether that’s a spouse or a child. The right term life policy might let you keep your premium low for up to 30 years. A permanent policy like whole life or universal life might go longer. Stay healthy — Health is generally the second most important thing insur-

However, if you can show that you take care of yourself—by maintaining a healthy diet or exercise routine—most insurers will keep your premium low. Don’t overbuy — Purchasing too lit-

But premiums rise as coverage increases, which is why it’s important to meet with an experienced life insurance agent who can help you decide how much life insurance is right and explain the various life insurance products that may be available to you. Consider a convertible term policy — Term life insurance, which covers you for a limited amount of time (a term), is usually less expensive than whole life or universal life. Those plans are referred to as permanent, because they can cover you for your entire life. Many people opt for term insurance because it’s more affordable. If you do decide to purchase term life insurance, make sure it’s a convertible policy: one that starts off as term insurance but can be converted to permanent insurance without having to re-qualify for the policy when you’re ready for a permanent policy.

We’ll rescue you and your vehicle to get you back on the road as quickly as possible with a dedicated network of more than 13,000 Emergency Road Service facilities across the U.S.A. and Canada. AAA assistance includes changing a flat tire, jumping a dead battery or mobile battery testing and replacement service, delivering emergency gasoline or fuel, lock out and key service, or when all else fails, towing your car. We’ll provide the assistance to help get you behind the wheel again as quickly and safely as possible. No one provides better roadside assistance than AAA. AAA Emergency Road Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is designed to assist you in an emergency when your vehicle, or the vehicle in which you are a passenger, becomes disabled. Your membership coverage applies only to those emergency and towing services listed in this guide. The service provider may not have been able to locate your vehicle. Present Membership Card and ID You may be asked to show a valid AAA membership card and your driver’s license or other acceptable photo identification. In the absence of proper identification, or, if your membership cannot be verified, the service representative will be obligated to charge you for the service. This charge will be reimbursed by AAA (less charges for services exceeding published limitations) upon submission of your paid receipt to AAA within 60 days and verification of your membership. Cancel Unnecessary Calls If the requested service is no longer needed and the AAA service representative has not yet arrived, please call AAA immediately, as each service call is charged against the member’s record.

SERVICE INCLUSIONS Mechanical First Aid The AAA emergency service representative will make minor mechanical repairs or adjustments to place a vehicle in safe driving condition. If needed and available, parts and the labor cost to install them are to be paid by the member. If the vehicle cannot be put into a drivable condition to proceed under its own power, towing service, as described in the Towing Services section, will be provided. Flat Tire Service If the vehicle’s spare tire is inflated and serviceable, it will be installed in place of the vehicle’s flat tire. If not, the towing provision will apply. (Note: Tire rotation, installation/removal of tire chains and snow tire change-over are not emergency road services.) Battery Service A battery boost will be provided in an attempt to start the vehicle. If the vehicle cannot be started in this manner, towing provisions will apply. In most service territories, AAA can also quickly test your battery and electrical system. If needed, AAA can replace the battery on the spot with a AAA branded battery (at a special discounted member price.). The AAA battery includes a 3-year full replacement warranty. Fuel Delivery Service An emergency supply of fuel will be delivered to a member’s disabled vehicle enabling the member to reach the nearest service station. The member will be charged for the fuel at current pump prices. Specific quantities, brand, or octane ratings cannot be promised, nor can availability. AAA Plus: Provides sufficient free emergency fuel to enable you to reach the nearest service station, when your vehicle has run out of fuel. Towing Services When your vehicle cannot be safely driven after attempting any of the listed emergency services, your vehicle will be towed (once per breakdown) to the facility rendering the service, or up to three miles in any direction to a repair facility from the point of disablement at no charge. Charges for service that exceeds the benefits listed will be at the prevailing hourly or mileage rate for the region where service is provided. In instances when your vehicle becomes disabled

while towing a light-duty trailer, service will be provided for the trailer. You will be required to pay for trailer towing. All vehicles must be free of snow and ice prior to towing. AAA Plus: Provides up to 100 miles of free towing, in any direction from the point of disablement, to a repair facility of your choice. AAA Premier: Increases one tow to a maximum 200 miles plus a free one-day rental car. Extrication/Winching Your vehicle will be pulled out of a ditch by being extricated/winched when it can be safely reached from a normally traveled or established thoroughfare (driveways must be cleared of snow or ice). If special equipment, additional service personnel or vehicles are required, the associated costs will be at the member’s expense. AAA Plus: Provides a second truck and second driver, for up to one hour, if your situation requires it. Lockout Service If your keys are locked inside the vehicle, service will be sent to gain entrance. If your keys are lost, broken, or the service provider cannot gain entrance to your vehicle, locksmith service up to $60 or, if a AAA locksmith is not available, reimbursement for locksmith service up to $60, will be provided. In cases where the vehicle cannot be made operable, towing services will be provided according to the towing provision. AAA Plus: Provides up to a total of $100 in parts and labor to gain entry or make vehicle operable. AAA Premier: Provides up to $150 for Locksmith, $100 Home Lockout Service. Service Limitations Members requiring more than four road service calls during their membership year will be charged for the fifth call and each succeeding call at the time of service. AAA Plus, AAA Plus RV, and AAA Premier services become effective seven days after receipt of your dues. Special Assistance When your vehicle cannot be made operable upon providing the services listed in this guide, AAA will assist you in finding the nearest open place of repair. If a repair facility cannot be located, we will assist you in obtaining lodging or alternate transportation, which will be at your expense. Types of Vehicles Serviced Service applies to all properly licensed and inspected four-wheeled motor-driven vehicles of the passenger, pleasure or

recreational type - provided that services can be safely delivered. If specific towing equipment is requested, but not required to safely transport the vehicle, the associated cost will be at your expense. Dual-wheel campers/motor homes are eligible for all services except towing, extrication/winching and tire service. Dual-wheel unloaded pickup trucks are eligible for all services except tire services. Rented passenger vehicles, as well as four-wheeled commercial vehicles, (excluding taxis, limousines and vehicles with snow plows attached) are eligible for services. Motorcycles are ineligible for all services. Weather Emergencies During severe weather conditions, AAA reserves the right to suspend or limit service temporarily if the vehicle is already in a place of safety, such as a private or public garage, driveway, etc. AAA will provide service to the vehicle after the weather emergency is over. Alternate Service If you have followed the procedure outlined to obtain emergency road service, and AAA service is not available, you may obtain your own service, pay for it and submit the original receipt to your AAA club within 60 days. Reimbursement will be based on the prevailing commercial rate for the region where the vehicle was disabled. In instances where the AAA contractor access is legally restricted (toll roads, limited-access highways), reimbursement will be provided for all covered services. If AAA service was available, but not requested, reimbursement may be limited to the amount the club would normally have paid for the covered service. No reimbursements will be made by AAA on charges incurred when a member’s vehicle is removed from the street or under direction of the police because of illegal parking, traffic violations, or other illegal activities. Storage charges and clean-up fees from the scene of a traffic accident are also not eligible for reimbursement. Members having more than four road service calls during their membership year are not eligible for alternate service reimbursement.

Republic of Kiribati is in the middle of nowhere It’s the end of the world as we know it

small island nation in the Pacific Ocean has been officially identified as the end of the world by a distinguished panel of experts commissioned by Disney. Kiribati, a former British colony, was chosen following a six-month project that saw leading explorers and cartographers embark on a quest to identify the most remote geographical location on the globe. Kiribati is more than 14-hours by plane and over 2,500-miles from the nearest land mass and was one of several locations short-listed by the panel. It was chosen because of its extreme isolation, unusual location and unpredictable weather conditions. Once part of the British Empire, Kiribati has been independent since 1979. The nation consists of 33 atolls dispersed over 1,351,000 square miles with an estimated population of 105,000. Vast distances separate the islands and although Kiribati’s entire mass is smaller than the city of London, it is spread over an area the size of Western Europe. The only nation on earth that straddles the equator and borders the International Date Line, Kiribati is the first place on earth to see the sunrise. Although the skies are often perfect blue, typhoons and high seas can erupt, catching unwary mariners by surprise. The massive pressures of the Pacific

Rim’s tectonic plates produce dozens of earthquakes and volcanoes, creating a vacuum effect that can swallow entire islands in one gulp. In 2005, the island of Tebua Tarawa vanished under the sea never to be seen again. Chairman of the Society of Cartographers Steve Chilton, a member of the expert panel, notes: “There is no doubt to me that Kiribati really is the

last place on earth. It’s an incredibly remote spot, thousands of miles from its nearest neighbors — Australia and Hawaii.” Despite its remote location Kiribati’s Fanning Island has become an unlikely destination for cruise lines like Holland America and Crystal. Non-US-flagged vessels sometimes call at this isolated speck of land on their Hawaiian itin-

For travelers it’s a once-in a-lifetime opportunity to visit a tropical paradise that seems nearly untouched by modern civilization. Also known as Tabuaeran, the island is one of Kiribati’s most accessible islands and is reputed to be the most beautiful. Travelers of a certain age may have a sense of déjà vue. A shot of the palm-treed atoll served for as a stand-in for “Gilligan’s Island’’ on the popular 1960s TV series. The ‘katei’ or traditional way of life is still very much alive. Passengers are welcomed at a rickety wharf by native dancers and a local craft market offers hand-woven baskets, shell jewelry, and real grass skirts. Visitors can sip on a toddy, a local drink made from the sap of a coconut tree. Island tours offer sightseeing and snorkeling in the lagoon, which is completely wrapped in the doughnutshaped island’s warm embrace. The sand is powder-white; the water is warm, clear and shallow — perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

Your windshield — A clear safety benefit Even minor damage can help cause an accident

windshield does more than keep you warm and dry. It also serves as a critical component of your car’s safety system. Today’s windshields are made of laminated safety glass and manufactured for optimum safety in the event of a crash. They help protect occupants inside the vehicle during impact, and provide a backboard for the inflating passenger side air bag. They also provide roof support, in case of rollover. According to the Car Care Council, the windshield is the third most important safety component in today’s cars and trucks after seatbelts and airbags. All three components are part of what automotive engineers refer to as a vehicle’s safety restraint system (SRS). A windshield does not have to be completely cracked to be an accident risk. Rock pits or chips in the driver’s line of sight can be a real hazard. Small chips or pitting can magnify sunlight, especially during fall and winter when the sun is rising or setting at a lower angle in the sky. The rays can temporarily blind drivers, increasing the risk of serious accidents. The National Glass Association (NGA) estimates that about five percent of vehicle windshields require replacement each year. If your windshield is chipped or cracked, it pays to repair

According to auto glass experts, any windshield damage — from rock chips to small cracks — is likely to spread if left untreated. Typical rock chips can be repaired if they are smaller than the size of a quarter, and are not in the driver’s direct

line of sight. Chip repairs take about 30 minutes to fix, and usually leave a small blemish where the glass was broken. If the damage on your windshield appears in the “acute area” of your driving line of vision, your windshield should be replaced. Be sure to ask your

auto glass shop to provide an estimate, including the amount of time your vehicle needs to sit before it is safe to drive again. Choose a replacement windshield produced by an original equipment (OEM) manufacturer. Using poor quality glass, or improper adhesive selection or use can lead to problems like air whistles, water leaks, rust, and distorted vision. Doing the job right the first time will avoid service problems down the road. Safety experts estimate that 20 percent of all crashes are caused at least in part, by impaired vision from dirty or damp windshields. Wiper blades should be replaced at least once a year, or if dry cracked or leaving streaks behind. Damaged blades can break and allow the metal wiper arm to scratch the glass. Make sure to clean the streaks, smudges, and road grime off your windshield that catch and refract light. ver since there have been cars, there has been car trouble — flat tires, dead batteries, blown radiator hoses and more.
