By Wayne Northey President, AAA West Virginia ess than half of Americans say they get a good night’s sleep but the driver’s seat of your car is no place for a cat nap. Drowsy driving can be just as deadly as driving under the influence, but crashes are often under-reported due to the inherent difficulties of attributing crashes to sleepiness. Now a new report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety offers some eye-opening conclusions. According to a survey of 2,035 motorists conducted as part of the AAA Foundation’s 2013 Traffic Safety Culture Index, more than a quarter of those polled (28.3 percent) admitted they drove despite being so tired that they had difficulty keeping their eyes open. An earlier study found two in five (41 percent) admitted they had “fallen asleep or nodded off” at least once while behind the wheel. Just like alcohol and drugs, fatigue impairs judgment, mood, reaction times and driving performance. Studies by the National Sleep Foundation indicate that being awake for more than 20 hours results in an impairment equal to a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08%, the legal limit in all states. Although typically associated with long distance driving, fatigue can set in at any time. Contributing factors include emotional stress, illness, boredom and sun glare. Overeating, drinking alcoholic beverages, or riding in an overheated or very cold vehicle can compound the effects.

Wayne Northey Sleep-related crashes are nearly twice as common among young people, who tend to stay up late, and sleep too little. Shift workers, those with untreated sleep disorders and commercial travelers are all at greater risk. Men are almost twice as likely to fall asleep at the wheel. Many of us tend to underestimate the negative effects associated with fatigue and sleep deprivation, or maybe we’re just too tired to recognize the symptoms. Unlike alcohol-related crashes, there are no blood, breath, or other objective tests for sleepiness. A recent analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash data estimates that about one in six (16.5 percent) deadly crashes,

involve a driver who is drowsy. These numbers suggest that the impact on motor vehicle crashes has not been fully appreciated. AAA’s research and educational initiatives into drowsy driving began in 1993, as part of the AAA Foundation’s comprehensive “Wake Up!” campaign and this new report should serve as a wake up call. It also underscores the importance of educating drivers on the simple, yet effective measures they can take to prevent a possible tragedy. What can you do to prevent fatigue from making you another crash statistic? Start any trip by getting enough sleep the night before — at least seven hours. Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles. If you can, have another person ride with you, who can share the driving. Learn to anticipate your circadian rhythms — or internal clocks — and avoid driving during your body’s natural downtime. Be on the alert for signs of sleepiness such as trouble keeping your eyes open, difficulty paying attention and drifting out of your lane. If you notice any of these danger signs, stop for a rest and if needed, a quick nap. Get some exercise — it helps you become more alert quickly — and for an extra boost, drink a caffeinated beverage. AAA urges all motorists to pay attention to these warning signals. Unfortunately, too many have adopted the “I’m tired, but I can make it” mentality, often at their peril or the peril of others. It’s time to put that notion to rest, once and for all.

Do you know how to handle an accident? What to do if you are involved in a car crash

ccording to The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, there are more than six million U.S. motor vehicle crashes per year reported in the United States. The odds are that you’ll find yourself involved in a vehicle accident at some point in your life. Would you know what to do? Once the initial shock wears off and you’ve checked for injury, attempt to exit your vehicle. You might need to use a window if your door has been damaged. If your vehicle is drivable, move it to a public location. From there, you’ll be able to safely exit the vehicle and report the accident. Moving the vehicle is a good idea if there’s an immediate danger like being hit again on a busy interstate. Do keep in mind that some states require you to stay on the scene. In the event that your vehicle ends up in water, stay calm. You won’t be able to open the door due to the pressure from the water if the vehicle submerges. Take a deep breath and roll down the window to escape. If the electric windows won’t work, then break the window by hitting it with an object or kicking it. Dial 911 to report the crash. In most cases the dispatcher will automatically know your location using GPS technology. Otherwise, look for mileage markers or directional signage.

ODDS ARE AGAINST YOU — There are more than six million motor vehicle crashes reported each year. Most insurance carriers recommend the following steps following an accident: • Take note of how many passengers are in the other vehicles involved in the accident, as this will help prevent the future addition of passengers during insurance scams. • Collect the full name, insurance infor-

mation, and home address of all other drivers involved in the accident. You should also provide your information to the other driver(s). • Write a brief summary of the accident, recording as many details as possible - the make, model and year of the vehicles involved; the time of accident; and weather conditions.

Take photos. Must of us carry cell phones with the ability to take photographs. Pictures really DO tell a story. Collect the names and contact information of any witnesses, especially if you feel something or someone other than yourself caused the accident. While it’s okay to express concern over what happened, you should never admit that the accident was your fault or claim liability. Have your insurance information, driver’s license, and vehicle registration available for the police. Information will be collected and the officer will ask all the drivers what happened and record the account(s). Ask for the police report so that you can give it to your insurance carrier. Smarter teen driving starts with parents StartSmart Online helps parents be more effective coaches

arental involvement is the key to teaching teens to drive safely. Caregivers who spend more time with their teen drivers transfer their safe driving wisdom and experience to novice drivers before they drive solo. According to a series of research studies from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, parents who ensure that teens get ample practice in a wide variety of situations are more likely to help their teens develop the necessary skills to be safer drivers. These new findings also provide evidence as to how parents can most effectively work with their teens. AAA used this insight in the development of a new Drivers Ed tool for parents—AAA’s StartSmart Online Parent Session. Grounded in principles of adult learning, the program helps parents be more effective driving coaches as their teens learn to drive. A study by George Mason University found parents often rely on the information and techniques they learned in driver’s education and unknowingly pass on outdated and sometimes erroneous information. “Teens continue to have the highest crash rate of any age group, so it’s critical that parents are involved and use evidence-based techniques that work,” said Jim Lehman, president AAA East Central.

SET A GOOD EXAMPLE — Teens drivers watch what their parents do and will follow their lead. For example, one AAA Foundation study that surveyed parents and teens during the process of learning to drive found: • Nearly half of parents reported they wanted their teens to get “a lot of practice,” when asked about their plans for their teens’ driving. Yet, only about one in four parents mentioned practicing under a variety of situations or conditions, such as in bad weather, heavy traffic, or on unfamiliar roads. •

Nearly half of parents (47 percent) reported that there was still at least one condition in which they were not comfortable allowing their teen to drive unsupervised even after they passed their driving test and got their license to drive independently. Few parents in the study were observed sharing more complex driving tips—such as visual scanning or anticipating other drivers’ behaviors — with their teen drivers. “These recommended coaching tech-

niques may seem rather obvious,” notes Lehman, “yet research findings show that parents aren’t regularly practicing these techniques.” With the roll-out of the StartSmart Online Parent Session, AAA aims to give parents easy access to the most useful parenting practices for supervising and managing a teen driver. Through interactive elements and demonstrations, the two-hour program covers everything a parent needs to know, including a discussion about the situations and challenges they will most likely experience during supervised driving practice. “Parents should make sure that their teens get ample driving practice, which goes beyond getting practice on routine trips on familiar roads,” said J. Peter Kissinger, President & CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “If they do, teens will be much more likely to have the skills and mindset needed to be safer drivers.”

Drivers need to do the math on speeding It’s a costly habit that gets you nowhere fast

ime is short and so is patience. You have places to go, and you want to get there as fast as you can. It won’t hurt anything to drive a little faster, will it? Most people don’t seem to think so. According to the AAA Foundation’s 2012 Traffic Safety Culture Index 46.8 percent of drivers have admitted to speeding (10+ mph) on residential streets in the past month. At the same time, 63 percent of drivers say it is completely unacceptable to do so. It’s clear that when it comes to speeding a “do as I say, not as I do” attitude persists. However, if you take a minute to do the math, speeding proves to be quite a costly habit for you and for all of us, and it really doesn’t get you where you’re going much faster, either. So what’s wrong with driving just a little faster? For starters, your wallet wants you to slow down. According to CNN.com, the average cost of a speeding ticket is about $150. Then, there are your insurance premiums. A single ticket can raise your rates by 10 to 25 percent. Speeding reduces your gas mileage, and the faster you drive, the harder your car needs to work to overcome air resistance. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, your fuel economy can be as much as 25 percent worse at

If you do end up crashing, the laws of physics tell you that you’ll crash harder, be more likely to get hurt, and do more damage to your car. Year in and year out, speeding is a contributing factor in almost one-third of all fatal crashes, a number that has not changed significantly in decades according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Speeding costs more than most of us think, so slow down, save your car some wear and tear, save some gas, save yourself a lot of frustration — and maybe even save a life.

RUNNING THE NUMBERS

TAKE IT EASY — When you add up all the potential expenses, speeding costs much more than you think. 70 mph than it is at 55 mph. Speeding doesn’t just hurt your wallet; speeding hurts people. Experience seems to indicate that lots of people speed all the time without crashing, so odds are you can get away with it too, at least this time, right? Sure, odds are you won’t crash on a given trip, but speeding certainly doesn’t improve

your odds. Even an extra 5 mph makes a difference. It probably doesn’t feel like a big difference, but the extra 10-15 feet you’ll cover before you have a chance to react to a car that cuts you off or a child that runs in front of you sure makes a difference, and that 10-15 feet is assuming you’re paying attention.

A trip that takes 20 minutes at 60 mph would take less than 2 minutes longer at 55 mph. Accelerating aggressively in traffic doesn’t save much time, either. A European study found that hard acceleration and hard braking only shave about 4 percent off of your total travel time. On a 20-minute trip, that’s a little less than 50 seconds — not a very impressive return on your investment. ADDING UP THE DAMAGE

NHTSA estimates that the annual economic cost to society of speeding-related crashes is $40.4 billion.

The Winter Olympics come to Russia’s Summer Capital Real snow guaranteed for Soviets’ subtropical oasis

he XXII Winter Olympics will be the biggest ever; with over 2500 athletes competing in 98 separate events. From February 7th to 23rd the eyes of the world will turn to Sochi, on Russia’s Black Sea coast near the border with Georgia. Russia’s largest resort sprawls for miles along the shores of the Black Sea and into the Caucasus Mountains. Best known in the West as the hometown of tennis star Maria Sharapova, the nation has poured an estimated $50 billion into making the Sochi games a success. What many Russians find puzzling is that Sochi is hosting the Winter Olympics and March 7-16 Winter Paralympics at all. Russia’s “Summer Capital,” Sochi is better known for its beaches, spas, swaying palms, and subtropical climate. Just about every place in Russia has a real winter except Sochi. To compensate for Sochi’s nearly total lack of snow, organizers are hosting the games at two main venues. The Sochi Olympic Park, located along the sea, is the site of the ice events and the Olympic Village. The mountain events will take place at the Krasnaya Polyana ski area about 30 miles away. Aside from the Olympics the “Caucasian Riviera” offers a variety of attractions for outdoor lovers and history buffs. Sochi first became fash-

The Rosa Khutor Alpine Center — home of the Olympic ski and sliding events — is a popular ski resort and personal favorite of Prime Minister Putin. And just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate organizers have stockpiled 450,000 cubic meters of snow up at higher altitudes. As President Vladimir Putin so succinctly put it, “real snow is guaranteed.” While the 2014 Winter Olympics marks Sochi’s entrance onto the world stage, don’t expect a quick exit once the athletes go home. The city will also play host to this year’s inaugural Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix and will be a host city for the 2018 World Cup.

Interactive roads are paving the way to the future Smart highways will help drivers travel safer and smarter

armakers have raced to add the latest technologies to their vehicles, but the roads they drive on have failed to keep pace. Consider Route 66. The highway that connected Chicago and Los Angeles in the 1920s was known as America’s Mother Road. Decommissioned in the 1980s — it also serves as a cautionary tale of what can happen if infrastructure fails to move with the times. According to the 2013 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure issued by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), forty-two percent of America’s major urban highways remain congested, costing the economy an estimated $101 billion in wasted time and fuel annually. One in nine of the nation’s bridges are rated as structurally deficient, while the average age of the nation’s 607,380 bridges is currently 42 years. While federal, state, and local capital investments have increased to $91 billion annually, that level of investment is insufficient and still projected to result in a decline in conditions and performance in the long term. Currently, the Federal Highway Administration estimates that $170 billion in capital investment would be needed on an annual basis to significantly improve conditions and performance.

ELECTRIC AVENUE — An electric highway could wirelessly charge cars as they drive down the road. Roadways not only need to get better, they need to get smarter as well. The Smart Highway uses a variety of technological innovations to develop roads that use light, energy and road signs to adapt to environmental and traffic situations. Current applications include high-tech overhead signs that display variable speed limits, lane status and real-time traffic information, so drivers know what’s happening ahead. Award-winning Dutch designer

Daan Roosegaarde, proposes embedding highways with technology that can visually communicate when the road is slippery, charge your electric car as you drive, and generate electricity for its own interactive lights. Solar powered luminescent green road markings that provide up to 10 hours of light could make street lighting redundant altogether. Some transportation experts predict an automated highway system where

driverless electric vehicles are wirelessly charged by solar power or other renewable energy sources. A Stanford University research team has designed a high-efficiency charging system that uses magnetic fields to wirelessly transmit large electric currents between metal coils placed several feet apart. The long-term goal of the research is to develop an all-electric highway that wirelessly charges cars and trucks as they cruise down the road. First the researchers need to make sure that the system won’t affect drivers, passengers or the dozens of microcomputers that control steering, navigation, air conditioning and other vehicle operations. “We need to determine very early on that no harm is done to people, animals, the electronics of the car or to credit cards in your wallet,” said Sven Beiker, executive director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS). Washington will be pretty in pink this spring See the cherry blossoms bloom in the nation’s capital

t’s hard to improve on springtime in Washington, D.C. Gentle breezes, balmy temperatures, and budding greenery offer a tranquil backdrop to the celebrated cherry blossoms. The National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place March 20 to April 13 and commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees to Washington, by the mayor of Tokyo. The threeweek festival features dozens of spectacular events, from its eponymous kite extravaganza on the National Mall, to the signature National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade. Visitors can start with a leisurely stroll around the Tidal Basin to see more than 3,000 cherry blossom trees in bloom. Admire the 17th century Japanese pagoda, a gift to the city from the Mayor of Yokohama in 1957. Be sure and include a stop at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, which features more than 180 cherry trees. The festival also gives visitors a chance to “cherry pick” from a full slate of performances, exhibitions and entertainment all across town. The Smithsonian Institution is made up of fourteen separate museums clustered around the Mall, a vast green space that runs nearly two miles, from the 555-foot-tall Washington Monument, which reopens this spring, to the Capitol. nternational research from Airbus reveals that passengers are increasingly researching in-flight seat comfort prior to booking long haul flights. Some 54% believe an increase of seat comfort is critical, and 41% are prepared to pay more in search of more comfort. Long-haul flights are becoming even longer. In the past 5 years the number of flights over 6,000 nautical miles has increased by 70%. Passengers cited lack of sleeping comfort, back and leg ache as the top three factors for discomfort on long haul flights. They also said that seats that are too narrow would have a negative impact on their post flight wellbeing, impacting them with fatigue and sore muscles. This is of particular concern to business passengers who need to ensure they are able to perform in working environments. Depending on the region, up to 70% of economy class passengers are traveling on business. Airlines have already taken notice by differentiating their seat offerings within classes and placing a price premium on more comfortable seat options — such as aisle, front row or emergency exit seats. Kevin Keniston, Airbus Head of

Passenger Comfort, said: “Passengers are acutely aware of inflight comfort and this impacts purchase decisions. Our research reveals that almost half of economy passengers are prepared to pay more in order to get greater comfort in economy.” New research found that an 18-inch wide seat standard in economy class improved passenger sleep quality by 53% when compared to the 17-inch industry norm. The study was conducted by The London Sleep Centre, using standard physiological sleep measurements — including monitoring brainwaves, eye, abdominal, chest and hip leg movement — on a selection of passengers. Airbus may be the world’s leading makers of commercial aircraft, but it is up to individual airlines to decide how many seat to install. And the trend is to cram as many seats into the cabins as possible, since more seats translates into more revenue. Seat width is just of the factors affecting passenger comfort. Seat pitch refers to the space between a point on one seat and the same point on the seat in front of it. Standard pitch on most carriers is 31-32 inches in economy class, down a couple of inches from a few years ago.

Finding your true coolant colors for your vehicle

emember the “good old days” when every car radiator was filled with a green coolant — also known as antifreeze? Today, there is a rainbow of automotive coolant colors and chemistries. A basic understanding of each one will help you appreciate the importance of using the right one in your vehicle. Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT) – This is the traditional green-colored coolant used for decades. It provides fast-acting corrosion protection, but the additive package depletes quickly and corrosion can result if the coolant is not changed regularly. Organic Acid Technology (OAT) – These coolants are typically red, orange, purple or yellow in color, and offer long-life corrosion protection. OAT coolants are not compatible with other types, and are specified for many General Motors vehicles, among others. Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) – These coolants are commonly yellow and orange in color, and deliver the benefits of both IAT and OAT coolants for a very long and protective life. HOAT coolants are specified for many Ford and Chrysler vehicles, among others. Your car could have any one of theses coolants depending on a variety of factors like year, make, model, and country

of manufacture. Use the right formulation for your vehicle and remember that color is no longer an accurate indicator of coolant type. There are also no clear-cut dividing lines on when newer coolants have been adopted; in any given model year, two vehicles from the same automaker may use very different coolants. And the fact that an older car came from the factory with one type of coolant doesn’t preclude the possibility that a different type might have been installed at some point during the vehicle’s history. As with modern engine oils, it is very important to consult the owner’s manual to determine the type of coolant your vehicle requires. Adding the wrong product can have serious and costly consequences. If there is any question whether your vehicle has the right type of coolant, the system may have to be flushed and refilled — a process that is also part of routine maintenance. Stick with the right oil through thick and thin How modern multigrade oils improve fuel economy

armakers are under intense pressure to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. While switching to more fuelefficient engines has become increasingly popular, lubrication is one area that can provide an extra boost. Many of today’s engines are being designed to operate using lower viscosity oils. Low-viscosity motor oils can contribute to fuel economy improvements by reducing internal engine friction. Viscosity is a measure of a fluid’s thickness or resistance to flow. Molasses, for example, is thicker and has a higher viscosity than water. If the oil is too thick when the engine is cold, it won’t move around the engine. And if it becomes too thin when the engine is hot, it won’t provide the right protection to engine parts. Most vehicles use multigrade lubricants, which minimizes viscosity differences under temperature variations. Multigrade oils like 10W-40 have two numbers on the container, indicating that the oil is able to maintain engine performance in both high and low temperatures. The first number is normally followed by a W, which stands for winter. This number represents the lubricant’s viscosity under lower temperatures, giving an indication of how the oil will flow in the winter. The lower the first

The second number, which appears after the W, represents the oil’s viscosity under high temperatures. The higher the number, the thicker the oil will stay at high temperatures. Using the correct viscosity for your engine increases its performance, reduces engine wear and increases fuel efficiency. Lower-viscosity grades of oil such as

Shell Helix Ultra, make it easier for your engine to cold start because it offers less resistance to moving parts and take less power from your engine. About 70% of engine wear occurs within the first seconds after start-up and low viscosity oil flows to friction parts much faster, reducing start-up wear. Shell has been able to demonstrate fuel economy gains of 4.3% and 6.5% with 0W-20 and 0W-10 oils, respec-

tively, on European testing. The testing was designed to mimic the conditions of both city and combined city/highway driving. Selda Gunsel, Vice President at Shell Lubricants, says “Blending low viscosity oil to improve fuel efficiency is actually relatively simple; the challenge comes when you look to balance it with engine protection and acceptable oil drain intervals.” Other considerations involve addressing specific lubrication needs of certain production engines — such as the popular, downsized turbocharged power plants that present some challenges in preventing the formation of deposits. Using low viscosity oils in engines not specifically designed for them may result in oil consumption and engine wear. To find the right oil viscosity for your engine, check your owner’s manual and bear in mind the weather conditions you live and drive in. Changing the oil and filter according to manufacturer’s recommendations can prevent expensive engine repairs.

Taking the bite out of winter driving Be prepared before you take to the road

inter driving means icy roads and snowy conditions and although it’s best to stay off the roads, most of us can’t avoid it because of work, school or other reasons. Be very cautious in these conditions. Make sure your car is prepped and know how to handle road conditions and hazards. Here are some winter driving tips when driving in snowy or icy conditions: • Get a tire with sufficient traction in the snow. Most tires that have at least 6/32-inch deep tread should perform safely in most conditions. If you live in a particularly snow-prone or rural area, you might also consider installing winter tires. • Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Under- or overinflated tires will not provide the optimal traction for treacherous road conditions. • On hilly or inclined surfaces, make sure to use your low gears for better traction. • Do not use cruise control on any slippery surface. • Days are shorter in winter, so turn on your lights to increase visibility so you and the vehicles around you are noticeable. Inspect and test all lamps on your vehicle to ensure proper function and alignment. • Salt spray, road grime and frost can

Driving on icy or snowy conditions requires more stopping distance so make sure to reduce your speed during these weather situations. Be sure to increase your normal following distance (three to four seconds) to eight to ten seconds. When accelerating, do it slowly to

avoid skidding by pressing the gas gently to gain traction. Use your accelerator pedal as if there were an egg between your foot and the pedal. Whether you have ABS (anti-lock) brakes or not, threshold braking is the best way to stop. To do this, keep your heel of your foot on the floor and apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal using the ball of your foot. To recover from a skid, take your foot off the accelerator and slowly turn the vehicle in the direction the rearend is moving. It’s common for your rear to fishtail. Just stay calm until it straightens. And if you need to, stop the vehicle and take a breather.
